"today in the bay" starts right now. good morning, thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garia canon. >> i'm sam brock. we get to your microclimate forecast. this is san jose, dry mostly for the time being and a taste of what is to come. a sprinkle here and there and nothing compared to what we're going to see later this weekend. >> meatierologist kari hall tracking the forecast for us and it looks like a couple wet days ahead. >> spotty rain and not expecting much out of the showers we'll see this afternoon, but tomorrow afternoon will be a different story and we're seeing the clouds rolling in right now, only a little bit of light rain here and there and mist and fog in parts of san francisco and the north bay and temperatures

are in the upper 50s to lower 60s and not much of a change this afternoon, but hitting the upper 60s in the south bay with more of a stretch of drier weather. i'll detail that and what to expect this weekend with that next system that is set to arrive. let's get a look at the north bay with mike. >> we're looking at the san jose camera and everything you're talking enough is to make the roadways wet. the street lights and the sheen on the roadways. watch the slick conditions and you'll have to use those windshield wipers even now. let's look at your map, from san rafael, no slowing. that orange blob has cleared. you'll see the orange crop up as we get thicker fog from around the bay from time to time and the bay bridge may be impacted and golden gate bridge has pockets of fog and san mateo bridge in the south and the views are clear. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. new this morning, a dramatic late-night rescue all unfolding in antioch after a woman drives off the road and straight into the marina. >> "odin the bay" steph chuang

live in antioch and, steph, the real story here is the fact that the security dward that happened to be in a nearby parking lot jumped in and happened to save the woman's life. >> that's right, sam and kris. pritny credible. a 41-year-old woman who lives in oakland. he said he was here in the parking lot and saw her driving to the parking lot a little bit recklessly and then drive off, actually, around 45 miles per hour into the boat launch here at the antioch city marina. he made the rescue from the middle dock where you see right there lit up. he said he was able to get her out before contra costa fire arrived and they called in rescue and fire boats to search and no one else was with her. the man who saved her is a security guard just five months on the job and he describes how he helped her. >> i was able to instruct her to take her seat belt off and she was acting very nervous and calmed her down as much as

possible. i was able to reach her hands and just pull her out of the window. >> and you can see the 41-year-old woman who was rescued, wrapped up, taken care of by paramedics. can't imagine how cold that water is. the guard saying she was in the water for about five minutes. antioch mreesz say thepolice sa cent scent of alcohol and they did arrest her for dui. she was treated at a local hospital in martinez and it is up to the d.a. to determine if it will charge her. live here in antioch, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." happening later today, an alleged child abuse case out of the tri-valley now playing out in court. a 20-year-old babysitter set to face a judge for the first time. she is mariah gonzales seen here and she is facing felony abuse charges. she was caring for a 13-month-old baby in livermore when she smothered him and tried to muffle his cries.

the baby eventalually went limp. neighbors we talk with say they're shocked. >> she seems like a normal person. >> that's a scary thing. everybody has cameras nowadays you have to watch your kids. >> gonzales advertised on the popular website care.com and that site says it is providing any assistance it can to police. new questions this morning about an already troubled south bay jail. all of this coming after an inmate brawl is caught on ocamera. pete joining us live this morning from the santa clara county jail. pete, the big question here, do we know what led up to the fight? >> we know that about 20 inmates were involved and started with two inmates escalating to that amount and it lasted about two minutes and then led to that temporary lockdown. now, it took place where these cameras were recently installed near a pod where that fight broke out. one deputy was in the housing unit and another five deputies on the floor. i want to point out this is the

only pod where cameras are installed that santa clara county jail and they had to use pepper spray to ultimately break up this fight and here's the santa clara county sheriff who is explaining what happened in this fight in the first place. >> looks like one inmate brushed up with another and you can see a lot of fist fighting going on in the videos and the inmates are spread pretty much throughout the pod. it's interesting that it happened here. >> now, hazmat crews are brought in to clean up the pepper spray. none of the deputies were injured. at least one inmate suffered minor injuries. we're live in san jose, pete suratos. >> the timing of that brought only adds to the question surrounding it. it happened just hours before a judge ruled the three correctional deputies must stand trial for last summer's beating death of an inmate. michael tyree died inside his cell where yesterday's brawl occurred. if convicted, those guards could face life in prison.

new high-speed chase in the east bay and the suspect. 's car flying off the roadway. a story we first brought you as breaking news yesterday and this new video is revealing more about how the chase unraveled. this is dash cam video from a lafayette police officer. the officer is trying to pull over that bmw on the left-hand side of your screen. all this on highway 24. the driver then speeds off at more than 100 miles an hour. the officer called off the pursuit because it was just too dangerous. minutes later, the driver lost control and flew about 50 yards and landed upside down inside that building. around midnight thursday, so no one was inside the yoga studio at the time, fortunately. the driver and his female passenger were rushed to a hospital with serious head injuries. 5:06 right now. same crime in the same neighborhood in the same day. a smash and grab burglary that

happened yesterday afternoon later that night the same crime reported at another home about ten minutes away. san mateo sheriff deputies say no one was home during either of those incidents and so far they haven't made any arrests. a scary moment unfold in berkeley last night. police officers say that the driver of this rv got out just before an amtrak train barrelled into it. it happened just after 6:00 on the northbound tracks. that is near fourth street in berkeley. the driver got out and didn't make it far. police say when the train hit the rv, debris went flying and hit the driver. he was seriously hurt. police say everyone onboard the train is okay. >> wow, i mean, he's just lucky to be alive. a quick check of your weather and a storm timeline as it approaches, kari. good morning. >> good morning, sam. we're getting ready for more active weather as we head into the weekend. clouds moving in and fog and drizzle as you can tell by this

live golden gate bridge camera that you can barely see anything in some spots. later today we will have brief showers moving through. mainly a mix of sun and clouds today. and then for tomorrow, the main event with some heavy rain moving in and some gusty winds and also the potential of some flash flooding and that will be for tomorrow and pretty much all day and the heaviest of the rain arriving during the evening. i'll detail that and we'll get a look at what to expect after that system moves through. that's coming up in a few minutes. let's get a look at what's happening on the roads in the east bay with mike. >> once you look a little bit west of here. these are folks moving over towards the bay bridge toll plaza. the incline get lost in the clouds and the fog and that's a situation for the bay bridge. you saw the golden gate bridge a couple minutes, a couple seconds ago. get your maps and that is not a problem as far as the speeds go right now and we're seeing that build start for a friday and anything north of the san mateo bridge and misty, drizzly

headquarters. happy jobs friday. >> hey, there, scott. happy jobs friday. wall street looking to extend its winning streak to four days and futures are higher and investors are waiting the big economic news and the jobs report out and we are expecting another solid month of hiring in february with forecasts for 200,000 jobs and unemployment seen at 8.9%. if we see a number below or 150,000 it raises concerns that the recent market turmoil is, in fact, impacting jobs and the data will be watched closely by the fed and presidential candidates as a gauge of whether the economy continues to improve. the dow rising 44 points thursday to 16943. the nasdaq up 4 to 4707. scott, back over to you. >> hey, landon, have a great weekend. apple now knows who is going to have its back when it goes to federal court as it fights the fbi over that ord oer to open an iphone. on thursday dozens of organizations including google and twitter and intel and many,

>> stub hub for "school of rock." >> get some autographs. >> that's true. >> a good weekend to spend the afternoon or the evening indoors. >> oh, yeah. >> you'll be wanting to find anything you can do inside whether it's a thing inside watching some movies, heading to the movies or just hanging out at the mall. we'll take a live look out now as we see mostly clear conditions across the south bay. we haven't had any issues here as far as fog, but we have seen that as you head into san francisco and in the north bay. and a look now at the clouds that continue to move in. we will still have some spotty showers during the morning and also early afternoon. but not expecting anything really heavy until we go into the day tomorrow. so, here's the set up we have going on. the atmospheric river is developing and that is the flow of the upper level ones that allow some of those low pressure systems to move right into the bay area. that's setting up overhead and these areas of low pressure just streaming on across.

the first one moves through. and it also brings in some scattered showers. but it will be a fairly weak system. the next system moving in will be a little bit heavier. as we get a closer look at the timeline and the futurecast today at 1:00, scattered showers moving through just briefly and then the rest of the day some spotty, light rain. and then we start out tomorrow morning. still, some rain possible and it becomes a little bit more widespread as we go into the afternoon and then at what happens here. when we see the yellows and the oranges. that indicates a very heavy rain and that will continue into the evening as well as the overnight hours before it does become more scattered and light into the day on sunday. we will still have some rain moving through and another system setting up sunday evening that could stream some heavy rain across parts of the peninsula, the south bay and the east bay, which could some additional rainfall on to our totals that we're expecting right now. we're looking at the potential anywhere from an inch and a half

around san francisco and maybe over 2 inches. there could be some spots in the south bay and parts of the peninsula that has much more rain and about 2.5 inches just this weekend. we'll keep you up to date that. let's get an update on what is happening across the golden gate bridge now with mike. >> we'll see if we can see the bridge. there you go. there is some lights. the glow, the fog, the mist and the drizzle and the damp, wet roadways for the golden gate bridge. that's the factor right now. look at your map. light volume of traffic you would expect on a friday and the speed sensors aren't affecting any problems. and the slick ones, as well. across the bay bridge low clouds and fog drift across. impeding our view around treasure island. a smooth drive across the san mateo and dumbarton bridges. get away traffic eastbound will starty this afternoon. remember to bring those chains for the weekend storms, as well. the south bay moves very smoothly. 101 moving towards us.

war ii and recommissioned to do some cargo runs during the korean and the vietnam war. >> three different wars carrying ammunition there and still being restored recently. so, it's a work in progress. >> if you look at the ground, you see how small the people are. that gives you the relative scale of that ship. >> certainly does. well, scaling forward. if you like your b.a.r.t. train is a little more crowded than usual, there is an explanation for this gremlins. >> according to "the chronicle" a mystery issue inside the eastbound direction of the east bay tube is knocking b.a.r.t. cars out of service. the problem is impacting electrical components on those trains. this week alone it knocked 40 b.a.r.t. cars offline. that, in turn, is forcing b.a.r. tarun smaller trains. orrer shorter trains. the source believes the problem may lie with some sort of power surge that's happening inside the tube. but b.a.r.t. is going to start to offer perks to lighten the load for frustrated

customers or riders during peak hours. starting this spring passengers who travel during nonpeak hours can earn points. those points can be redeemed for small, cash prizes. b.a.r.t. received a federal grant for the program which right now is scheduled to last for about six months. >> we'll make you pay more because you're traveling during the busiest hours. we would give something back to you as a reward for moving your commute hours. also great for research. >> as they say in jerry maguire, show me the money. b.a.r.t. looking for 25,000 participants including downtown employees. b.a.r.t. says an estimated 5% of them free up the space of a ten-car train. >> the better perk telling people taget up and give you seats. >> little chivalry. u krsparking a lot of react from students. hundreds of students will be rallying on campus today at noon. they want to show support for

the programs that are being threatened by cuts, including the school of public health undergraduate program. students say these are two of cal's strongest programs and they not be discontinued. raising california's smoking age from 18 to 21 now getting the green light. the state assembly approved the bill yesterday and now goes before the state senate. raising the smoking age will make it harder for teenagers to get their hands on tobacco. supporters of the plan say it's going to save millions of dollars in future health care costs. lawmakers also voted to reggi reggialate. coming up, another ugly slugfest at the gop debate from personal attacks to yelling on stage and constant interrupting. it was a political battle to the very end. but we do have a break down of the more memorable moments coming up for you next. and talk bout right place, right time. i'm stephanie chung live at the

5:30 on your friday morning. you made it to the end of the week. i'm sam brock. >> i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. we want to get right to your forecast because it will impact your weekend. the golden gate bridge looking a little misty this morning and don't let that fool you. >> meteorologist kari hall track the radar for us. how much rain are we talking about? several inches of rain over the course of the weekend and today we start out with some very light rain and it will be spotty, not all of us will see that. our temperatures are very mild as you head out the door. we're right about 60 degrees for most of our microclimates with highs in the low 60s in the north bay and up to 69 degrees south bay. we'll talk about that rain and what to expect with a very strong storm system set to arrive by tomorrow evening and that's coming up in a few

minutes and let's get an update on the road conditions with mike. >> watch the slick conditions and the rain coming in. right now we have to deal with the metering lights that we just turned on 35 seconds ago. about. looking over here at the backup and we have the folks slowing as you a lane up the incline and a smoother drive across that misty bay bridge. look at your map and a smooth drive around the bay and the fog registering for our road weather index and the orange, cloudy section over there and the fog will drift around the rest of the bay and so far no major issues. back to you. >> don't worry about it. don't worry about it. >> gentlemen. >> gentlemen. >> you got to do better than that. more fireworks during last night's gop debate. frontrunner donald trump fending off attacks from the left and from the right. >> tracie potts is in washington, d.c., breaking it do down for us right now. despite the constant fights some issues weeg discussed last night

and at the end after all that attacking they all agreed to support donald trump, if he is the nominee. >> every single one. and it really sort of undermined this whole idea of we can't have him as our nominee because everyone agreed, even reluctantly that they would support him. yes, there was a lot of yelling and name calling and bickering and back and forth and we tried to get through all of that this morning to tell you about some of the issues in this campaign. >> this little guy has lied so much. >> beyond the bickering -- >> donald learn not to interrupt. it's not complicated. >> the name calling. >> excuse me. i have given my answer. >> reporter: the insults and accusations. >> don't worry about it. >> gentlemen. >> you want to -- >> you have to do better than that. >> i don't othink the people in america are interested in a bunch of bickering school children. >> there was substance in the fox news channel debate most of it directed at the frontrunner.

kansas, kentucky, louisiana and maine. those voters will make their choices in the republican primaries and caucuses and then we'll move on to some of thor contests in the middle of the month. >> and probably contest it for just as long. thank you very much, tracie. presidential candidates that donald trump is fending off so, too, is candidate mitt romney in the fray. you can watch an exclusive interview with him in the wake the critical comments about donald trump coming up on "today" show starting at 7:00. kris, breaking news to report now jobs numbers just came down within the last minute. >> let's turn to scott mcgrew for a breakdown. what do you think, scott? >> i don't think the republicans will like it. they are trying to convince the world that the economy is not doing well. according to these numbers, it is. 242,000 jobs added in the month of february. much, much stronger than our january numbers. unemployment sticks at 4.9%.

an extremely good number. we're getting down sam and kris to a low enough unemployment number that i don't think it will go a whole lot lower any time soon because we are close to entirely low unemployment. >>lert. >> very interesting to see how the numbers will be used now in the political conversation. new this morning a dramatic water rescue unfolding in antioch with a security guard just happening to be in the right place at the right time. he jumped into action and nowed for saving a woman's life. >> "today in the bay" stephanie chuang was in the right place at the right time this morning. steph, you got to talk to that hero security guard. >> caught him before he left his overnight shift and he was saying, you know what i was happy i was able to help. he sees a woman and says he sees her driving recklessly around this parking lot at the antioch marina and going 45 miles an straight into the boat launch crashing here into the river.

he rushes over. he ensures no one else is in the four-door cadillac with her and pulls her out. minutes before antioch police arrived. they called in three water boats and divers went in to help search the river for anyone else. there was no one. the woman was conscious when he started to save her, but very nervous. >> i tried to see if maybe she's conscious. luckily she was. otherwise it would have been a different story. then i see her screaming saying i'm going to die, i'm going to die and try to calm her down as much as possible. >> and thankfully, of course, she's all right. we did learn from antioch police that the woman is 41 years old and lives in oakland. they smelled alcohol on her breath and they gave her a field osobriety test and she failed and they did arrest her for misdemeanor dui. she's physically fine with the help of the security guard this

morning. live here in antioch, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." the 7-year-old woman fighting an eviction notice on the peninsula passed away last night. marie hatch was being forced out of her cottage in burlingame after living there for six decades. the notice came after her landlord and close friend passed away and the new landlord decided to sell the property. a law firm stepped in tahelp hatch pro bono and her lawyers plan to continue the fight on the eviction on behalf of hatch's roommate who is also being forced out. well, follow up now what looks like the problem of elevated lead levels in the drinking water is growing. the press democrat reports that school administrators shut down drinking fountains at hillsburg jr. high school over contamination concerns. that followed last week's move. y health experts have since tested the water. they say the lead levels are actually lower than the initial tests suggested.

water tests that junior high are still being conducted. school leaders are calling that shut off an added precaution. , now, let's head to meteorologist kari hall watching the microclimate forecast develop. >> good morning. we start out with some clouds and some mist and drizzle in parts of the north bay in san francisco. the rest of the bay area starts out with quiet conditions. we will see that for the next several hours and then as we go through early afternoon, scattered showers start tadevelop and mainly san francisco to oakland and farther to the south. that is where we will have a chance of rain through the day. and then we'll start to see the light showers developing in the north bay during the evening commute, but it will be very hit or and not expecting a widespread heavy downpour. at least not today. but things change tomorrow as we get ready for a stronger storm system to move through. i'll detail that and what to expect as its in and how to plan for the weekend, that's coming up in a few minutes. let's get an update on what is happening in the tri-valley now with mike. >> a very clear view of dublin.

on thursday a lockdown at the santa clara county jail after a brawl was caught on cameras that they just installed days ago. according to the sheriff lorhoa. smith says the inmates seemed to take sides based on race. >> looks like one inmate brushed up against another and then the fight was on with fists. you can see a lot of fist fighting going on in the videos and the inmates are spread pretty much throughout the pod. but that's where we installed the cameras. we don't have cameras in any of the housing areas and it's interesting that it happened here. >> one watchdog group also questioning why guards group the inmates the way that they did in the same area where new cameras were just installed. as for injuries, the nursing staff treated several inmates for bumps and bruises. timing right now of that

brawl only adding to the question surrounding it. it happened just hours before a judge ruled three correctional deputies must stand trial for last summer's beating death of an inmate. michael tyree died inside his cell inside the same facility where that happened. the bay area now has three cases of the zika virus. first case in napa county as we reported it now is joined by two additional cases, one in san francisco, one in alameda county. the san francisco and alameda county cases actually surfaced last month but we're only learning about them because official os didn't believe there was a public health threat. the san francisco patient contracted the virus after traveling to central america. that person has fully recovered. no details are available yet on that patient in alameda county. at 5:44. one bay area lawmaker tackling the problem of football-related concussions. if you follow football, you certainly know a lot of the lengths that some researchers

kind of like a unicorn right in the middle of our drought. but now things are really looking up. >> now as we look at this forecast and heading into march and looking for a miracle march, especially when it comes to heavy rain and heavy snow in the sierra. we'll talk about that. a live look from at and t park and towards the embarcadero and fog and low clouds and has created some low visibility in spots and looking at what we are expecting as we go through the day. the storm timeline. here's a look at the golden gate bridge. you can see the fog there also. we will see that there and then the north bay as the clouds continue to increase else where. later today brief passing showers and otherwise a mix of sun and clouds and we'll also have a bigger storm system arriving tomorrow that could produce some heavy rain along with some strong, damaging winds and flash flooding will be possible. a look at the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. we will have more of this rain in the forecast over the next several days and here's part of the reason why. the atmospheric river is setting

up and that is what we associate with a trough and basically brings in those low pressure systems right into the bay area. and those upper level winds and keeping it wet for several days. and it starts out with some spotty rain today, but may get a little bit heavier by 1:00 this afternoon. and then rain kind of lightens up as we go into tonight and then also for the start of the day tomorrow with, once again, a stronger storm system arriving tomorrow with some heavier rain. and we could still see that rain lingering into sunday. so, between now and sunday, we're looking at the potential of at least 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain in spots and flash flooding is possible and also debris and mudslides will be a concern. winds will be gusting anywhere from 35 to 55 miles per hour and we do have a wind advisory in effect and that could cause downed trees and power outages and in the sierra we're looking at heavy snow starting late saturday night.

well, it's been a crush to an entire industry. a bill that would provide nearly $140 million in funding is going to be introduced later this morning in san francisco. that would primarily benefit california fishermen and businesses who suffered economically these past several months. part of that money would be used to study the harmful acids on the west coast. the commercial crab season is closed afterlic health officials found unusually high levels of

toxins due to algae blooms. the same crime in the same peninsula neighborhood on the same day. later that night the same crime reported at another home about ten minutes away. san mateo ocounty sheriff deputies say no one was home during either incident and they have not made any arrests. scary moments unfolding in berkeley. police say the driver of this rv got out moments before an amtrak train barrelled into it. happened after 6:00 on the northbound tracks right near fourth street in berkeley. so, the driver got out thinking he might have been okay, but he didn't make it too far. police say when the train hit the rv, the debris went flying hitting the driver and seriously injuring him. police say everyone onboard that train is okay. well uc berkeley consideration cut its college of chemistry sparking some reaction this morning from students. >> hundreds of students will
