it's no secret that the republid divisiveness. less well it's no secret that the republican presidential candidates have plunged the party into chaos. less well known is that the republican party nationally is a distant third to the democrats a in numbers. we heard so much after super tuesday about donald trump energizing the gop that he's bringing more republicans out to vote. more voters in general. but overall you're saying there are fewer registered republicans.
7:47 am
what does it say about the party? >> i wish i could tell you. we're in uncharted waters here. it's so hard to know whether the party is on its way out or in the midst of some sort of internal struggle. but the ugly battles among the contenders for the republican nomination, well, they flekt a political party in search of its identity and search of more members. take a look at a recent study undertaken by the independent pugh research center which asked people to identify their partisanship as democrats, republicans, or independents. according to the study released last year democrats had the most members at 39%. that's been kind of studied by independents with 32%. a big change. republicans now claim less than one out of four voters or 23%. >> wow. that is a really startling statistic. okay. how do the republicans hope to win this november given these numbers? are they hoping to take voters from the other parties?
7:48 am
good question. by doing what people like donald trump, frankly, has been doing so successfully in the primaries. most of the republican primaries and caucus have been open to independents and democrats, vicky. trump's appeal has transskended that republican base and captured sizable numbers of independents and democrats. that's why folks like marco rubio and ted cruz have been screaming that trump has abandoned the party's staunch conservative on fiscal and religious issues. in many respects, he has cobbled together, trump has, a new coalition of supporters. by the way, a name for this. the process is known as party realignment. it happens every 40 or 50 years. and could be happening now. >> what does it mean for the democrats? will the numbers themselves identify democrats staying within their parties? that depends on whether the realignment is real rather than a temporary fad connected with
7:49 am
the primary season and donald trump. if trump holds on to the new coalition and gains republican nomination democrats need to work hard to keep their members and that gets to what we call enthusiasm. we heard lot about that. hillary clinton has won the most delegates. we know that. and as we understand now, it's likely to win the democratic nomination. bernie sanders attracted the largest crowd and millions of dollars in small amounts response clinton must tap into that enthusiasm if she hopes to keep her democratic base in place. >> you were showing us the numbers earlier and that data. perhaps that's going to be more fluid. it looks kind of stark on paper. we talk about less than one in four. there's the numbers there one in four being republicans. perhaps we'll see more fluidity in november. >> the party registration numbers that we've always looked at this time around they may not reflect what they have in the past. and if that's the case, this election may be more
7:50 am
unpredictable than any time in the recent them. we are in uncharted waters. >> quickly. in california you can't vote in the primary for a different party. you have to vote along party lines. isn't that right? >> democrats allow independents to come in to their party primary. republican, however, keep everybody out. it's only republicans. in that sense republicans will have a truer primary in california than other states. in north carolina that was republicans only. that's why people like cruz and rubio were screaming. you're changing the combination. you're changing the way things are being done. it's not fair. maybe not fair but it's working for donald trump. >> sure. maybe, as you said, it's part of a realignment reflecting what voters truly want. >> thank you so much. we'll be right back with a last look at weather. stay with us.
