"today in the bay" starts now. good morning, thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam br ooock. after a weekend it is still not over yet. morning storm impablcting your morning commute. packs a punch up and down the bay area. >> from wet roadways to dangerous waves. a team in place to help you get out the door this morning. we'll start with meteorologist kari hall for a look at how long this storm is expected to stick around. >> we do expect this to stick around through the next several
5:01 am
hours and definitely during the morning commute and we will have rain moving through and many spots across the bay area seeing spotty, light showers at this point and a bit of a break before the next round of rain does move through. we do still see much activity off shore as this upper level low still spins and brings in more energy to this system that is enhanced by el nino as we see more moisture streaming across the bay area, getting anywhere from three to ten inches of rain over the weekend. as we go into the rest of the day, still some times s of la rain and a few thunderstorms. we will have time to take a bit of a break here as we go into the latter parts of the day, into the day tomorrow, as well. i'll detail that and what to expect as the next round of rain moves in. let's get an update on what's happening on the roadways now in dublin, right? >> that's right. the east bay and the tri-valley where the wet roadways are obvious and the water kicking up here and also like to point out the off ramp.
5:02 am
folks make this off ramp and then negotiate it pretty well and how slippery it is and an issue for traction all around the bay. look at your map. green speed sensors are flying and crash at greenville and still blocking one lane and still causing a problem. but the green highlighting here, well, that's showing up all over the bay. that's our road weather index and i'm showing you where it is going to be wet. down here, some flooding. in fact in many spots. bob down in san jose we have a closure because of some flooding but that's not the only thing going on today. >> well, fortunately, mike, this is probably the worst of it that we've seen in the south bay. we're here on northbound 880. this is the alameda off ramp which you can see is shut down because of this standing water. a work crew behind the camera position that is a little ways up the road and actually a large pump running and probably an issue with the drainage. so, we've seen in the past 30 minutes we've been here water is slowly receding. if you want to look to your right, the headlights heading northbound on 880. we've seen a few people ignore the cones and ignore the signs
5:03 am
that say do not use this off ramp and drive through this water anyway. and chp would tell you not a smart idea to drive through standing water. if you see standing water out there this morning, like i said, we haven't seen much of it. if you can, do not drive through it. want to show you some video a sig alert lifting at any moment now. this is highway 9 both lanes shut down east of highway 35 because of a tree that came down during the overonight storm but that sig alert should be lifting around right now at 5:00 this morning. so, if you're out there this morning, at least here in the south bay, we're not having the rain but the roads are still wet from all the rain that we had last night. you do want to watch your speed as you're heading into work. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." another dangerous situation is developing on the peninsula this morning. high surf advisories whipping up vicious waves in pacifica only adding to anxiety for the residents there.
