let's check that forecast. the rain has been coming down. >> such a soggy start to the week and let's just take a break. the next round is not far behind. we're getting ready for more of the soggy weather for the rest of the workweek. we're now taking a look at the radar. some of that green popping up there well off shore and it will take its time before the north bay not until later tonight. we will have temperatures cool as we head out the door. 42 degrees in the north bay and looking at highs around 60 degrees for most of the bay area. i'll talk about this brief break and how much rain we're expecting coming up in the microclimate forecast. let's see how it looks on the san mateo bridge this morning with mike. >> west 92 which moves well and you can see the crystal sparkling lights much different than yesterday. want to show you the map. overall no problems as far as the bay area freeways. a lot of construction scheduled over here as you typically see through oakland.

but this you don't expect this. this full closure for niles canyon road right here and the windy portion. that is closed right now and that will be an issue for traffic forcing folks to take mission. we're tracking that for the reason why of othis closure and we'll hand it right back to you guys. as you mentioned, mike, it's a crash scene. a passenger train derailing near fremont with the first car still submr s submerged in water. the rest of the train still on track and will be for some time. >> there are reports the train tracks may have been covered with debris from a mud slide caused by the storms that moved through. >> the passenger train veered off the rails as mike was just mentioning between fremont and sunol. we have live coverage of this developing story. bob redell on scene this morning and many passengers describe the

derailment as basically a miracle. >> if you look at the scene, you have to agree with that. we just heard from the national transportation safety board, sam and laura. they are gathering information about the train derailment and more info for us later in the morning. one of the priorities is getting that derailed car out of alameda creek and what damage to the tracks which belong to union pacific. i just spoke to someone with up and there is minimal damage to the tracks but not get a better idea until the sun gets up and they are able to move the rail cars. from san jose to stockton. the last train of the night and as it it wound through niles canon it it derailed at around 7:30. a mile west of sunol. union pacific just told us preliminary it looks like a mudslide that washed a tree on to the tracks causing the first two cars to derail. you have one car that stayed upright. the other one fell into alameda

creek, which is swollen from the recent rain. that car flooded while first responders raced to save the people inside. as you mentioned, everyone survived, but nine people were hurt. four seriously. >> most of the severely injured were in the car that fell in the water. >> where was that on the train? >> so, that is the first car as the train was proceeding east. the engine of that car is in the back. so, it was pushing the train. does that make sense? >> yeah. >> so, basically the caboose was in front this time and the engine was in the back . >> it's not clear how fast this ace train was traveling. we do know that generally speaking they're supposed to go relatively slow through niles canyon. if you're not familiar with niles canyon, the train here is very curvy and very steep. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay."

steph chuang will have an update on the injured passenger in the next 30 minutes. in the pacifica apartment building teetering at the edge of a cliff starts to come down later today. red tagged for the last six years. the cliff that that building is sitting on has been eroding for years and things have actually gotten much worse with this el nino season. the property owner has not taken any steps to demolish that 20-unit building, so the city is going to do it, instead, knocking the complex down. >> we are concerned that the building could actually end up on the beach below. and, if so, would cost a lot more to demolish and also would potentially hurt someone who is on the beach and also the lead would be close to the environment. >> crews are going to start to tear down the interior today, the demolition is scheduled for thursday, weather permitting. let's talk about the weather right now. checking in with kari.

>> today it looks like the only break we have this week from the rain. and then we start to see more active storms moving into the bay area. now, we are watching this next one approaching and it will be a weak one. not as strong as what we had over the weekend. but still adding some rain to the rainfall totals that have been already well above average. and then as we go into tonight, we start tasee the showers moving into the north bay and the rest of the bay area may not see that until around the early morning commute. scattered showers and, once again, not as heavy. pretty light as we go into the day tomorrow. today we're looking at temperatures reaching near 60 degrees and low 60s in spots and spots like santa rosa up to 59 degrees today and we'll talk about the rain chances and what to expect over the next several days as it gets really soggy. that's coming up in a few minutes. let's get an update on the morning commute now from mike. >> first the beautiful view and we'll just talk about the east shore freeway eastbound getting

away from the bay bridge there as one lane blocked by the recovery work. clean up the earlier crash. commute direction westbound no problem towards the bay bridge. we'll stay with the mabs and just stick with this area where we're talking about the ace train. and down over towards vasco. there are no ace trains this morning, however, bigger impact is the result of the crash that bob showed you, niles canyon road closed for the morning and folk s know you have to go towards mission north. donald trump looking to mount more momentum. democrats, republicans, both voting today with four states voting. today could be critical in shaping or reshaping the contours of the election. the warriors not just on a roll, but making history. the win last night that put them atop another all-time list.

with more clouds moving in as the next system approaches. this is what the radar can look like showing some green and showing some light rain as it moves into napa and san rafael as it moves into late tonight and into the start of the day tomorrow. most of the system will fizzle out as it moves across the bay area and some of the highest rainfall totals and we're talking maybe 0.25 and the next system arrives as we go into thursday morning and it starts out with heavier rain and this one looks like a stronger cyst. could bring in some more heavy downpours and along with that, some gusty winds. over the next seven days, we have storm system after storm system moving through. and the potential of up to over four inches of rain for the far north bay. and then these areas you're seeing shaded in red. that's 2.5, to 4 inches of rain. keep in mind the rain we had over the weekend was the average amount we should have for an entire month of march and here we go with possibly some more of that. and a high surf advisory continues as we go through the

day with the waves kicking up to about 20 feet and, also, some strong rip currents. keep that in mind if you do take this break from the rain to go to the beach. it will be pretty dangerous out there. i'll keep you up to date on that and let's get an update on what is happening now in oakland from mike. >> a much calmer drive you talked about. we're getting the break right now and that's good news. traffic flowing north and south with these headlights past the coliseum. let's look at the map, we have celebration because of olast night's record, but we also have a smooth drive. celebrating, as well, for the morning cumulate. zoom you into the only problem we have. mile canyon road is closed and will remain closed. the windy part there where that was the overnight train crash and the train is still there. they can't open that road until it is done and more traffic for mission and 680. remember, you're stopped over there at main street. back over to you guys. >> thank you, mike. the battle on the roadways, uber versus lyft two companies battling it out for a piece of

the big apple. >> for more on that and the rest of our news before the bell, let's turn to landon dowdy. lyft versus uber here. >> that's right, the competition is heating up, sam and laura. let's get a quick check of your markets. the dow and s&p 500 posted a fifth straight positive day on monday. the crude is pulling back today, still near $38 a barrel and that is a two-month high. oil prices are up 45% since hitting a low of $26 back in february. the dow rising 67 points to 17073. the nasdaq slipping 8 to 4808. meanwhile lyft is gaining on uber in a key market. the ridership has increased 500% since last may and the growth is partly due to fare cuts which was made in 33 cities, including new york. also more investment in marketing efforts. got a craving for flapjacks?

mark that anniversary at a buddhist temple in beijing today. the prayer session also serving as a protest. they shouted slogans demanding that malaysia safely return their relatives. however, no one onboard has ever been found in that mysterious crash. investigators believe the boeing crashed in a remote stretch of the southern indian ocean after flying off course and running out of fuel. the parliament marked it with a moment of silence today. several homeowners on the peninsula face a daunting task after a pipe problem left their homes covered in raw sewage. at one point sewage was through the vents. problem began in millbrae. this video shows some of the raw sewage coating the floor, oozing out of the bathtub. you can kind of see what happened inside this homeowner's

place. what a mess. several families say their homes are really no longer safe to live in. millbrae public works says it pushed rocks into the main line and that is what clogged it all up. now to the homeless crisis in san francisco. pressure building on mayor ed lee to take more action. "the chronicle" reporting david campos wants to officially declare a shelter krisicrisis te it easier to turn city land into homeless shelters. it would require the mayor to open up six shelters in the next year. this coming after hundreds of homeless set up tents under the central freeway. happening today, first lady michelle oobama set to deliver remarks in celebration of international women's day. >> mrs. obama will visit union market in washington, d.c., and speak to dozens of girls as part of the let girls learn initiative. pushes investment in primary

the south of the bay. santa cruz mountains out of morgan hill and gilroy and nice, easy drive. transit has no delays except remember the ace train is out of service. back to you guys. >> mike, thank you very much. a serial predator striking, again, near uc berkeley and now police sending out warnings across the campus and beyond. they're passing out these fliers alerting folks that another woman reported being sexually assaulted near the uc campus. that marks the fourth attack since last month. the latest one happened after midnight on saturday. officers say a man grabbed a female cal student and dragged her off of the sidewalk and sexually assaulted her. investigators are rereleasing that video recorded last month. they think this is their suspect. i know it's dark, if you recognize him, please, call berkeley police. talk about at the right place at the right time. a chp officer is being praised for rescuing two kid stuck inside a burning car and all caught on camera.

>> take your kid! >> you see the officer who is behind the car this morning in monterey spotted flames and smoke. the driver pulled over but could not get the door open and the officer rushed in and pulled two crying children from the back seat. you saw the first one. there is the second child the driver and another woman managed to escape through the passenger door. they were all treated for smoke inhalation and no cause of the. all of marine county reservoirs at capacity. >> wet weather over the past weekend put the last of the county's major lengths used for drinking water shortage. the municipal water supplies and since the beginning of rainy season reports nearly 40 inches
