a commuter train derailment here in the east bay. i'm bob redell and take you back out here live high above niles canyon with the latest on what caused this ace train to come off its tracks. that story coming up. this morning, we've got team coverage on the team derailment. i'm stephanie chuafg live in castro valley with what we're learning about the passengers who got hurt. those details ahead. plus, a break in the rain before more wet weather heads our way and soon. beautiful sunrise to greet our day. the full timeline for your neighborhood right now on "today in the bay." like a postcard morning out there. good morning. thanks so much for joining us, i'm lorgarcia canon. >> i'm sam brock. for the first time in a long time, kari hall will start out the forecast without rain for today. but don't wait too long. >> don't wait too long because tomorrow morning we'll have a different story. but this morning you could see that beautiful sunrise. i'm already tracking the next
6:01 am
round of rain. you could see it moving off shore ander off to the north and to our west. as it moves into the north bay later tonight, it will continue to weaken. now our temperatures are chilly. we're in the 40s all across the bay area and looking at highs today right at about 60 degrees with sunshine and clouds starting to move in later today. we'll also see that rain in the north bay. i'll detail that and what to expect. lets get a look at the bay bridge toll plaza with mike. >> kari, it's backed up. look how beautiful that sunrise is. look over here at the beauty and not at the lights. the map will show you anywhere south of there and we see the build we typically expect for much of oak norland. crash over at the shoulder and slowing off of 238. the rest of oyour bay moves as expected except for right here. a closure for sunol and for the 680 freeway there and also slowing down through pleasanton and i'm watching these areas carefully because of the closure
6:02 am
and the incident that caused it. for that and the information we're getting overnight and this morning and hand it right back to you guys. >> let's get right to it. thank you, mike. a developing story we have been tracking all morning long. an ace train carrying more than 200 people jumped its tracks and plunged into a fast-moving creek below. many passenger husband to be rescued. >> here's the latest. nine people hurt. some of them seriously. 214 people onboard that train and we know the likely cause was a mudslide. the train had just left the fremont station and was headed to pleasanton when it all happened. >> live team coverage this morning of the developing story. we begin with bob redell live at the scene and we know this happened stormy weather and reportedly a tree on the tracks anding nothing has been confirmed. >> that is the initial belief on behalf of the union pacific which owns these railroad tracks. good morning to you, sam and laura. an alameda county sheriff sergeant told us a minor miracle that no one was killed when that
6:03 am
ace train car fell about 50 feet into alameda creek. what remains this morning and a creek that was swollen from recent rains. the sergeant describes a chaotic scene and passenger stuck inside that car screaming, cold from the water, hurt from the crash. nine people hurt, four seriously. now, this was the number ten ace train. the last train of the night for 214 commuters traveling from san jose to stockton and the central valley when it derailed around 7:30 about a mile west of sunol. the engine was pushing four rail cars. the engine and two cars stayed upright and on the rails. a fourth car derailed, but also stayed upright, teetering on the edge of that ledge right there. and then the fifth car, that's the one that tumbled into the water. >> preliminary investigation shows that it was a mudslide that may have caused the derailment. so, a lot of mud and also have to move away from the tracks that go up to the wheel of the
6:04 am
rail cars. so, that's going to take some time and also have to move some of the heavy equipment and the machinery that they use to be able to move or pull those rail cars out of the way . >> union pacific estimates going to be several hours to at least a day, maybe longer to remove that car from the water and to fix the tracks. they're waiting for the sun to come up to get an idea of how badly damaged those tracks are. they know there is some damage, but they can't tell yet because we don't have the light and they also have to remove all that mud and debris from that slide. it's not clear how fast this train was traveling. we do know that generally speaking the ace trains are supposed to go relatively slow through niles canyon because the terrain is so curvy and so steep. as far as the investigation goes, right now is union pacific's jurisdiction. they have not yet heard from the ntsb. the federal agency that they are taking over and they believe that they were going to. they already would have. reporting live here in niles canyon, bob redell, "today bay."
6:05 am
>> long day for investigators. thank you, bob. let's bring in stephanie chuang live at eden medical center in castro valley where we believe some of the injured were taken for treatment, steph. >> yeah, that's right, laura and sam. eden here is a level two trauma center in this area which means there are 24-hour immediate coverage by surgeons and other resources necessary when you have people who suffered more serious injuries. but the good news in all of this is none of the passengers who were hurt suffered life-threatening injuries. now, pretty amazie isishine isi consider what happened. look at the video we got from one of the passengers that shows how chaotic it got. the help of firefighters pulling people off the train and mudslides making it more difficult to rescue some of the passengers, especially one of those in the train cars that was partially under water in the creek. >> because i, everything was normal and thank god i didn't sleep or anything on the train so i was aware of everything.
6:06 am
but shifted the gravity all of a sudden and we were all just panicking. >> something you'll never think you'll experience in your life and just grateful it turned out for everybody and some people that are hurt, but, in general, it could been so much worse. i'm just grateful. >> now, we did hear that some passengers describe people climbing out of windows to escape, climbing over broken glass. those that were not hurt half a mile in the dark to get out of the area. now someone with washington hospital in fremont did get back to me this morning and said that two patients were taken there to the e.r., evaluated and it was determined minor injuries. hoping that we get some good updates this morning. live here in castro valley, stephanie chuang "today in the bay." here's a closer look at the ace daily route. the altamont commuter express train. the spot that is marked between fremont and pleasanton, that's where train derailed last night.

6:19 am
will look like when it moves in, as far as what the radar could look like. light showers moving in by 9:00 and then later for san francisco. but then this rain kind of fizz ldz out as it makes it into the peninsula and parts of the east bay. might not make it to san jose at all. this dry weather could continue for another day for parts of the bay area. but, still, a lot of subtropical moisture streaming in and one after another of those weather systems moving in. so, this one moving in on wednesday and will be weak and then on thursday and friday, we will have another weather system moving in that looks much stronger. so, this is the way it pans out over the next several days. wae wi we will have light rain shown by the green here by tomorrow morning. and then on thursday we see some yellows and some oranges there indicating some heavier rain. that moves in and continues into early friday before that system moves off to the east. there will be another system right behind that one moving in between saturday night and early sunday. so, there will be some breaks in
6:20 am
between, but we will still have these rounds of heavy rain and possibly somes over the next several days. it even continues into the start of next week. as far as how much rain we could see during this time period, it shows that we could have anywhere from 2.5 to 4 inches of rain for most of the bay area. all of these areas you're seeing shaded in red and then it could be even higher for the north bay. 4 plus inches. for the sierra over the next seven days, the snow doesn't get cranking until about late friday night and then between friday and tuesday, we could have another foot of snow. maybe a little bit higher as you head farther to the south. so, the weekend forecast. we're looking at some chilly temperatures and off and on rain and highs mostly staying in the upper 50s. maybe hitting 60 degrees in a few spots. but really not the best weekend to get outside. i think it's netflix and chill kind of weekend. let's check in with mike and see what's happening on the roadways. >> but it's still a weekend. over here we're in the work day.

6:32 am
happened an ace train carrying more than 200 people jumped its tracks last night and it plunged into a fast moving creek below. it all happened between fremont and pleasanton. many passenger husband to be rescued. nine people were hurt. you see people out there surveying the damage and even some of the track. >> crews, investigators. we have multiple reports this morning. steph chuang have an update on the injury and reaction from passengers and we begin today with "today in the bay" bob redell. one train in a creek and another on the ground behind you and it could take several days for crews to remove all that wreckage. >> well, certainly several hours, at least today possibly longer. good morning to you, sam and laura. union pacific which owns these train tracks believes that preliminarily it was a mudslide that derailed those two ace train cars. as you mentioned, you have the one in alameda creek and then the other one above, which is still upright, but off the rail teetering there on the ledge.
6:33 am
you want to take a look now that we have the sun up from chopper that shows that mudslide. you can see it is by the third car it looks like about a 30-foot long sliver of the hill that came down last night when the ace train was coming through around 7:. this was the number 10 ace train traveling from san jose to stockton. the last train carrying 214 commuters. as it wound its way through niles canyon we're at right now, it derailed about 7:30. a mile west of sunol as you're looking at chopper high above the scene. one car stayed upright while the other fell about 50 feet into the alameda creek, which is swollen from recent rain. that car flooded while first responders raced to save the people inside. everyone survived. but nine people were hurt. four seriously. >> to paint the picture when you're down there and you're close, you feel like the "the fugitive" when the movie
6:34 am
starts. that is the kind of scene it is. it is cold and dark and the people on the train may not be dressed to be out in 45 degree weather at the time in kind of misty fog. so, you've got to account for all these things. >> it's not clear how fast this train was traveling. we do know that generally speaking the ace trains are supposed to go relatively slow through niles canyon. if you're not familiar with niles canyon, it's very steep and very curvy. reporting live here in niles canyon, bob redell "today bay." >> thank you very much, bob. nine people were hurt and sent to several bay area hospitals for treatment. stephanie chuang picking up on those injured and live eden medical center. one patient is being treated there. do we know where the other patients are? >> yeah, good morning, sam and laura. we know that the other patients are at washington hospital in fremont, but two who suffered minor injuries. there is questions as to what
6:35 am
were the other passengers because i just heard back from eden medical. a spokesperson said one person came here and the only passenger that came here. 52 years old and in stable condition and should be going home today. great news in addition to the great news that none of the nine passengers who were hurt suffered life-threatening injuries and pretty incredible when you take a look at the cell phone video of how chaotic it got there in the train. people described hard stops and a very jarring deceleration. the rain added to the confusion last night as firefighters started to pull people off the train and the mudslides making it more difficult to rescue some of those trapped passengers. >> all of a sudden, just some hard stops and rapid deceleration and it was just jarring. and then it just stops and then we could see mud and rocks and trees up against the side of the train. >> one member was just under the mudslide and we were trying to dig her out while the train was
6:36 am
hanging. >> and people described how some passengers got othrown around inside the train, breaking glass when they hit the windows. the passengers who were not hurt were able to walk half a mile to get out of the area. once again, the other update we got from washington hospital in fremont and, again, we're looking at live chopper pictures, by the way. you see the wreckage there. two of those passengers who suffered minor injuries from that derailment were taken to washington hospital in fremont. and we are still trying to check on the other six passengers who suffered minor to moderate to serious injuries. of course, we'll keep you posted when we get those updates. live here in castro valley, stephanie c hhaung. back for the al it, aont commuter express. with eight stops in between. between fremont and pleasanton is where the train derailed last night.
