it's wednesday, march 9th. coming up on "early today," the donald wins big and bernie sanders scores a major upset as the delegates add up, so do calls for some to step down. breaking news overnight, sir george martin, the man called the fifth beatle, has died. he was 90 years old. we have a major weather alert. bill karins says there's a high risk of flash flooding and torrential rain today. then lucky news for a news reporter. and hulk hogan is back on the stand in his $100 million sex tape trial. plus, a high-speed chase that ends -- well, you've just got to see this one. donald trump was a big winner, while bernie sanders had a huge upset in michigan. ted cruz came in second followed by john kasich and marco rubio. in the south, donald trump over ted cruz. trump didn't even campaign in idaho although he said he did like their potatoes. the biggest race was in michigan where bernie sanders surprised everyone by beating hillary clinton. secretary clinton, though, killed it in mississippi. and early this morning, nbc news called trump as the winner in hawaii. speaking from florida last night, trump thanked his supporters while talking about the growing movement behind him. >> thank you very much, everyone. this was an amazing evening. i want to thank the public, the people of michigan, i want to thank the people of mississippi. there's only one person did well tonight, donald trump. the single biggest story in politics today, it's what's happening at the booth. the tremendous number of people that are coming out to vote. whereas the democrats are down

30%, 35%. they're down from what they were. we're up by 50% and even more. you're talking millions of people. so i actually think it's the biggest story in politics today. i hope that the republicans will embrace it. believe it or not, i'm a unifier. i unify. i want to thank paul ryan, he called me a couple of days ago. he could not have been nicer. he was very encouraging and i have great respect for paul ryan. lyin' ted. and then he holds the bible high and puts the bible down and lies. look, i know politicians better than anybody. they're liars, okay? they're serious liars. more importantly, they'll never get you to the promised land, ever. and by the way, i can be more presidential than anybody. i can be more presidential if i want to be. i would say more presidential and i've said this a couple of times, more presidential than anybody other than the great abe lincoln. he was very presidential, right? >> great sound bites.

trump also knocked mitt romney in one of the stranger moments of the night, showing off his trump water, his magazine, even his steaks and wine. >> we make the finest wine, as good as you can get anywhere in the world. and i know the press is extremely honest, so i won't offer them any. but if they want, they can take a bottle of wine home. >> to prove his point, the event even had an open bar for good measure. sanders was also in florida hitting back against the polls. it showed him losing to clinton in michigan. >> i want to take this opportunity to thank the people of michigan who repudiated the polls that had us 20, 25 points down a few days ago, who repudiated the pundits who said that bernie sanders was not going anywhere and i want to thank the many thousands of volunteers that we had in the state of michigan for knocking on doors and for making the phone calls that created this kind of enormously successful night for us. and what tonight means is that the bernie sanders campaign, the

people's -- the revolution, the people's revolution that we are talking about, the political revolution that we are talking about is strong in every part of the country and frankly, we believe that our strongest areas are yet to happen. >> meanwhile, clinton still focusing on the general election and making not-so-subtle jabs against her republican opponents. >> running for president shouldn't be about delivering insults. it should be about delivering results. for the american people. if we reach for love and kindness instead of bluster and bigotry, we could see the best in each other, not the worst. if we lift each other up, instead of tearing each other down, there's nothing we can't do together.

>> while sanders' win in michigan was big momentumwise, delegatewise, it's about even. with clinton's huge win in mississippi, she's actually going to win more delegates than sanders for the night. trump also is winning with delegates. he now has 456. senator cruz is in second with 363. followed by marco rubio and john kasich. now, trump, no doubt, is looking forward to next tuesday with florida, ohio, illinois, missouri and north carolina all in play. and even though florida is rubio's home state, recent polls show trump ahead of him by eight points. hillary clinton also has a big lead in florida over bernie sanders. he was known as the fifth baelts, and he produced some of the world's most popular music. we're talking about sir george martin who had more than 700 records to his credit. he's died at 90 years old. beatles' drummer ringo starr broke the news early this morning on twitter, writing "god bless george martin, peace and love to judy and his family, love ringo and barbara.

george will be missed. nbc's chatman bell joins us from london with more. they must be pretty sad there, eh? >> it is, danielle. and the man who guided the fab four to fame, tributes flooding in for him. paul mccartney just releasing a statement saying if anyone earned the title of the fifth beatle, it was george. he was the most generous, intelligent musical person i've ever had the pleasure to know, adding he was like a second father to me. sir george handed the beatles their first recording contract, known as an english gentleman, he seemed an unlikely fit at first with the young lads from liverpool in one of their first recording sessions, asking them if there was anything about the studio they did not like. george harrison replying, "for starters, i don't like your tie." but together they went on to make music history. but it wasn't just the beatles he influenced, producing more than 20 number one hits in the united states alone, a career that included five grammys and even an oscar nod. he was involved in the music for three james bond films, produced elton john's tribute to diana

princess of wales and was on hand for the broadway album of the who's rock opera "tommy," later in life working again with the beatles music for the las vegas cirque du soleil show "love," creating a new album in the process saying you don't get a better job than this. danielle, what a life. >> thanks so much. the man accused of shooting a prominent idaho minister has been caught. 30-year-old former u.s. marine kyle odom was arrested last night by the secret service outside the white house. police say he was throwing things over the white house fence including documents and a computer flash drive. he's accused of shooting pastor tim remington six times on sunday, leaving him in critical condition. it happened the day after remington led prayers at a ted cruz rally. there was a massive manhunt after the shooting. several news outlets in spokane say they received letters with flash drives tuesday sent by the suspect. >> once we got the information and realized the scope of really

who could be in danger in this case, we alerted everybody. our federal partners were brought in, we were in contact with the secret service. we began to alert anybody who we thought may be in danger. >> pastor remington's son says his father is expected to make a full recovery. there's no word yet on what motivated that attack. to a massive manhunt in missouri. schools were on lockdown as police scoured farmland with helicopters, dogs and at least one s.w.a.t. team. but they got their guy. pablo antonio cerrano victorino, a mexican citizen suspected of killing five people. police started looking for him monday when they found four men fatally shot in a home in kansas city, kansas. early tuesday they shifted their manhunt to missouri where they found a truck they think victorino owned. it was abandoned on i-70, 80 miles west of st. louis. now, just after 2:00 in the morning eastern time, police said they had arrested him. immigration officials say he was deported in 2004 and illegally

re-entered at an unknown date. more on this story as it develops. now, it was a bizarre ending to say the least to a high-speed chase in new mexico. police received reports that a woman was throwing things from a vehicle on saturday. when they got there, she took off, hitting 100 miles per hour at times. the driver eventually crashed into a pickup truck at an intersection and then ran away naked. there she is. the 51-year-old woman was arrested and charged with multiple counts. police haven't said why she was naked. well, you probably won't be surprised by this, but noaa meteorologists have confirmed this winter has been our hottest ever. for alaska, it was the second warmest winter. the average temperature for the lower 48 was 36.8 degrees fahrenheit. that's 4.6 degrees above normal. recordkeeping began in 1895. now, in washington, d.c., the warmer weather is causing cherry blooms to bloom earlier than expected. the national parks service says peak bloom will probably be

between march 18th and the 23rd, and that's 13 days ahead of schedule. meanwhile, parts of texas, arkansas and oklahoma were pounded by torrential rains and powerful winds tuesday. and there was a tornado southwest of fort worth with damage to mobile home. at least one person died because of the storms. now, more severe weather is ahead today. nbc's meteorologist bill karins is here with the details. good morning. >> yeah, we're only halfway through this story. we dealt with the picture you saw yesterday. andover night torrential rains. we've had a lot of water rescues ongoing. reports of a nursing home evacuated in northern louisiana. fish and wildlife out there in boats. accounts of at least one housing subdivision that has four feet of water in homes. they're rescuing people from those homes. this is all northern louisiana, southern arkansas and northeast, they call it the arklatex region, arkansas, louisiana and texas. we've still got thunderstorms that could produce severe weather today. but in general, the concern is more going to be the flash flooding threat. this area here in red are all

under flash flood warnings. that's 2 million people. the flood watch goes from st. louis to new orleans back over to houston. that's 22 million people. so a large section of the deep south is dealing with this storm. here's the time line of the storm system today. it continues to race to the north. thunderstorms out ahead of it. we get training thunderstorms. literally like they're on tracks. they continue over the same areas time after time. and that's when you get these really historic flooding situations. as we go throughout the next 24 to 48 hours, the threat will begin to end as we go through thursday in that area. but not before producing some historic totals here. the possibility of two to three inches per hour with some of these thunderstorms. someone could end up with over a foot of rain and major flooding through t california. once we get south of santa rosa, we should be dry with

carolina's state senate 36-9. there are exceptions if the mother's life is in danger or if the fetus can't survive outside the womb. but not for rape or incest. the bill now goes to the house. a spokesperson for governor nikki haley wouldn't comment on whether she would sign the legislation. former pro wrestler hulk hogan testified for a second day in his $100 million lawsuit against the website gawker. gawker claims the sex tape of hogan and the then-wife of trend bub ga the love sponge was made as entertainment. that's a point hogan disputes. >> in the privacy of your own home, i'm not hulk hogan. in the privacy of my own home, i'm terry ballea. >> and allen savage was covering the train derailment in alameda, county tuesday morning when his cameraman told him to get out of the way. he instinctively jumped. as a car that had just been in an accident crashed into the camera.

leading the news on nbcnews.com, sanders scores major upset as trump rallies. bernie sanders said one of his most important victories of the democratic race, grabbing michigan. his first win in a state with a large number of minority voters. michigan was also where hillary clinton was the favorite. and in "the washington post," trump crushes ronald reagan's republican party. the editorial by msnbc's joe scarborough says donald trump is easily winning because working-class voters feel abandoned by their president, by their government, and by the republican party. he says, quote, rubio and the rest of the gop field were left watching in horror as trump crushed all comers at the polls and then used his victory speech to hawk steaks, wine and the most fabulous magazines you'll ever read.
