i know you weren't even born, but, boy, george martin, what a legendary figure in music. responsible for a lot of the music we came to love from the beatles. >> they don't call everyone the fifth beatle. >> no question about it. we're going to have a tribute to sir george in just a little while. but this morning, once again, the presidential race is our top story. let's get right to the results. starting with the republicans, donald trump took the biggest prizes of yesterday. michigan, mississippi and he added hawaii to his list of victories overnight. while ted cruz won by a large margin in idaho, nearly 20 points. and here's how the delegates break down. trump leading with 456. cruz in second with 363. marco rubio who finished no better than third in the four contests, has 153. >> split decision on the democratic side of things. bernie sanders pulled off a rather surprising upset over hillary clinton in michigan, but she scored a decisive victory in mississippi by more than 65 points.

and that has pushed clinton over the halfway mark in the race for delegates needed to lock up that nomination. >> we have complete coverage this morning. we'll talk to donald trump live in a moment. let us begin with nbc national correspondent peter alexander. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. another strong showing overnight for donald trump. he's padded his delegate lead, reclaimed momentum in this race and he's now shown his ability to clinch the republican nomination will hinge heavily on how well he can do in next week's super tuesday when the states become winner takes all. >> only one person did well tonight, donald trump. i will tell you. >> reporter: donald trump celebrating another step toward the republican nomination with what at times felt more like a late night infomercial. >> the magazine is great, take one. we have trump steaks. by the way, if you want to take one, we'll charge you about, 50 bucks a steak. no i won't. >> reporter: the billionaire who

>> i believe with all my heart that the winner of the florida primary next tuesday will be the nominee of the republican party. >> reporter: despite tallying zero wins through 23 states, john kasich, battling for second in michigan, delivered what could have been mistaken for a victory speech. >> and next week we are going to win the state of ohio and it will be a whole new race. >> reporter: so, those big prizes on super tuesday, florida and ohio, and here's what the new numbers show the race. first, donald trump with a wide double-digit lead over marco rubio, the senator from the state, ted cruz in third at 19. in ohio that race is much more competitive, trump still holding onto the lead at 41%. john kasich at 35%. cruz way behind. i spoke to a head of the aenlt-trump movement and they say they didn't compete in any of the states that voted yesterday. they are setting their sights on super tuesday. matt and savannah? >> peter, thank you very much.

donald trump is on the phone with us now live, mr. trump, good morning. >> good morning. >> let me completely reverse my line of questioning from yesterday. yesterday i said, is it possible the weight of all these attacks coming at you from other republicans had slowed your momentum. you went out yesterday and won three of the four contests. so is it possible, mr. trump, the weight of those attacks is actually helping you? >> i think so. i mean, you see the numbers i got in mississippi. i love mississippi and michigan. you see what happened. the numbers were astronomical. i'm surprised, matt, i'm surprised with you. i've never seen such negativity, such negative ads. they came at me. i heard what you said -- somebody said, oh, what are they going to start now? they started -- last week they spent $30 million on negative ads. >> so, the more they call you a con man and fraud, the more your supporters dig in their heels. >> that's one of the reasons i did what i did last night.

i brought out a magazine which i have. you talk about mitt romney, we brought up the steaks. we have a great steak division. we have a great magazine. we have a great -- all the things he talked about. you know, i have. and, you know, he went through a list of things. i don't even want to do that. but what he said was a lie. it was fraudulent. he shouldn't have done that. py understand where he's coming from. he had a very horrible loss and he hasn't, you know, recovered from it. >> you have to stop because you're making me hungry. >> i know. you know, matt, the truth s he had a loss. he hasn't recovered. we have to recover as a party, though. this tremendous positive energy in this party. we're setting records going to the polls. records, 65% up. millions and millions of people -- some people have never voted before. and they're voting for trump and they're voting in the party. >> that's a good way to get to the next question because on these election nights you've been saying, i'm a unifier. i can unify the party. yet you do have this big segment

of the party, orthodox, conservatives, traditional republicans who are, frankly, terrified at the prospect of your candidacy. so, to the extent it is on you to do so, how can you unify? how can you get them over to your side? >> savannah, we supper something going on that's the biggest political story all over the world and it's what's happening with the republican party. you see is it better than anybody. where millions of people are coming out and voting in the primaries. millions more than four years ago. millions. 65% more. whereas the democrats are down 30 and 35%. there's no spirit behind hillary. there never will be. she's not going to engender spirit. there's nothing to be spirited about. and what happens is we have something that if we could embrace it, we'll have a massive victory in november. we're going to have a massive victory. but, you know, instead of all this negative stuff, i was at tournament last week at trump national doral where adam scott won and i turn on television, and every time there's a

commercial, it was a negative ad in florida about me. a horrible and false ad. these are false ads. these are disgusting, false ads written by people that are absolute haters. if this party came together, matt, nobody could beat it. that's one of the things i respect. paul ryan called me such a smart call, such a wonderful call. >> all right. donald trump, mr. trump, as always, thanks for your time this morning. we appreciate it. >> thanks, matt. >> we got the wines in there, the steaks in,there the magazine in there. what else -- >> doral. >> oh, yeah. >> branding has been accomplished. as we mentioned, though, the upset of the night went to bernie sanders, stunning hillary clinton in michigan, but will that victory do much to reshape the democratic race and the delegate race? nbc's kristin welker has more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. secretary clinton wakes up with more delegate this is morning but senator sanders has new momentum after that major upset in michigan. the win is significant because it shows he can be competitive

in these larger, more diverse statsz. so a lot of folks asking this morning, exactly what happened. well, there are indications this morning that clinton's ground game in michigan may have been lacking. and sanders' message resonated, he troupsed on michigan on her trade deals like nafta. sanders even seemed surprised by the win, speaking to reporters in a hastily arranged press gathering after the results came in. take a listen. >> what we've done is create the kind of momentum we need to win. once again, this has been a fantastic night in michigan. we're very grateful. >> reporter: we're getting new poll numbers out this morning. the quinnipiac poll, take a look at florida. secretary clinton firmly in the lead there. she tops senator sanders 52% to 43%. michigan underscores this democratic race just got a whole lot more competitive everywhere.

>> thank you. let's bring in chuck todd and steve kornacki. good morning to you. let's start with democrats because this victory for bernie sanders was a surprise -- most especially bernie sanders and his team. what does it mean in terms of the delegate math and momentum? >> the delegate math it didn't do anything. technically hillary clinton got more delegates last night because of her dominance in mississippi. he didn't make up any ground. he actually lost ground. it does mean something in momentum. i think it's a reminder to hillary clinton she has work to do to gain trust of sort of the skeptical part of the democratic party when it comes to trade deals and this or that. the better she learns this now, the better she will potentially be as a candidate against donald trump, who's going to go at her the same way on the same issues. this could mean, look, bernie sanders, if he wins in michigan, he could win in ohio.

you have wisconsin in april. there's a bunch of northern tier states. >> we know donald trump had a big night. marco rubio had a terrible day. if it weren't for the fact florida is on the calendar next tuesday s is there any way he could stay in the race? >> it's not only that. you look at that performance, it was so bad for marco rubio. maybe under normal circumstances, a candidate in that situation might think about, do i even want to contest my home state? this is the problem for rubio and why it was a big win for trump last night. early voting is already underway under way in florida. tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of votes already in the books in florida. if marco rubio were to say, i'm going to get out of the race, we're going to let the party unite around ted cruz, even if it united from this point forward around cruz, wouldn't be enough to stop trump in florida. in florida, winner take all. you get 99 delegates if you win. donald trump is in a good spot right now. >> if trump wins ohio and

florida, he'll be the republican nominee. he can get to that majority. how is this evert, the anti-trump effort to take away florida, take away ohio, how is that looking this morning? >> he has a better shot at ohio than florida because john kasich is a sitting governor. you get the sense florida republicans aren't comfortable rallying around marco rubio. ohio regions are comfortable rallying around john kasich, so that's advantage kasich. but it's still not looking good. everything went as well as it could for trump. kasich finished third, not second in michigan. no extra bump. of course, what we described with rubio. neither kasich nor rubio got momentum out of last night going into their home states. it's trump with the momentum. >> do we look at polling differently going forward, since there seemed to be bumps in the road? >> we are under sampling, i think, and all pollsters are doing it, undersampling the trump coalition. >> you agree? >> i agree. >> i'll give him a pass in michigan.

it's the first democratic state in 24 years. >> he said he's pulling in non-traditional voters. >> we're not correctly polling the trump pollsters. i'm talking about it this morning. >> thanks. let's turn to an overnight arrest to the weekend shooting of an idaho pastor the day after he led a prayer at a ted cruz rally. the suspect taken into custody more than 2,000 miles away from the shooting at the white house. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams has the latest on this. pete, good morning, what can you tell us? >> the secret service says this man was arrested after throwing nonhazardous materials over the white house fence and then officers discovered he was wanted in idaho. police say the man has written that the president needed to do more to resist space aliens. >> reporter: the secret service says kyle andrew odom was seen outside the white house tuesday night throwing what are described as documents and a computer flash drive over the fence. the scene around the white house was still active hours later. the 30-year-old was immediately taken into custody, putting an

end to a three-day manhunt. >> i think everyone can breathe a big sigh of relief, that at least this part of the case, has come to a conclusion. >> reporter: the case started in just a day earlier pastor tim remington had delivered the opening prayer at a campaign rally for ted cruz. >> you get all the glory, all the honor, all the praise for it, lord. >> reporter: remington was walking outside when he was shot. video showed a silver 2004 honda accord linked to the former marine. police now believe odom flew from boise, idaho, to washington, on monday but they're still baffled how he managed to elude them and bored the plane in the first place. police say the idaho shooting was not a random act and the

pastor was not the only tart. he revealed his plan sent to his parents and news media. >> there's a number of people that were listed in the manifesto. there's a number of u.s. senators and house of representatives people, israeli government officials. it was extensive and it was disturbing to us. >> reporter: authorities in idaho say the pastor who was shot in the head and back is recovering, awake and talking. as for the man that was arrested, members of their family are saying they're grateful he was safely apprehended and no one was hurt. >> pete williams with the story. thank you. this morning we're learning a lot more about the american killed in a stabbing rampage in israel. the attack coming as vice president joe biden arrived there for some key talks. nbc's kelly cobielle is here this morning. >> a west point grad with a brilliant future. that's how the vice president describes taylor force. he was visiting israel, out for

a walk by the sea when he was stabbed. >> reporter: a bloodbath on jaffa's main sea front promen e promenade. tourists out, commuters on their way home when the attack was started. 10 wounded, the sidewalk stained red. the man with the knife was caught on cell phone video running down the seaside street trying to stab drivers stuck in traffic. it took 20 minutes to stop him. witnesses tried to help. >> there was a man on the floor with stab wounds here and on his back. i took off my jacket and i put it on his eye. >> reporter: american taylor force died at the hospital. the 29-year-old veteran of iraq and afghanistan was studying business at vanderbilt university, in tel aviv on a school trip to share his insights and knowledge with startups in israel. the university said, describing force as a young and hopeful life who exemplified the spirit of discovery, learning and

service. the stabbing spree was one of three attacks by palestinians across israel in just over 1 1/2 hours tuesday. the worst day of violence in weeks. vice president joe biden meeting with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu today was just a mile from the stabbing in jaffa where force was killed. >> my wife and my two grandchildren and granddaughter are having dinner on the beach not very far from where that happened. it can happen anywhere at any time. >> the vice president also saying this morning that the u.s. stands firmly behind israel's right to defend itself along with passing his condolences to the victim's families. this morning israeli media is reporting that taylor force's wife was also stabbed and is in critical condition. nbc news has not been able to independently confirm that. matt? savannah? >> awful story. >> breaking news out of seattle overnight. nine firefighters taken to the

hospital after a massive explosion leveled several buildings. the firefighters were at the scene responding to reports of a gas leak. some residents several miles away say the sound of that blast woke them up. the firefighters are listed in satisfactory condition with injuries ranging from burns to abrasions an investigation now underway into that explosion. thousands of people are expected in simi valley, california, today to pay their respects to former first lady nancy reagan. mrs. reagan will lie in repose at the presidential library. she died of congestive heart failure at the age of 94. she will be buried at the library next to her husband. >> we take a turn to al. you were watching some storms in the south. >> that's right. we have some wild weather going on right now. look at what we see yesterday. this is just outside of fort worth, texas. you can see transformers exploding there as a tornado

moves through. i mean, really amazing stuff. and as this pushes through, we're starting to see torrential downpours. and as this moved through the east, you can see the damage there, louisiana just outside of shreveport, massive flooding. video just in this morning of overnight flooding and it is going to continue today. look at the radar right now. it is lighting up from san antonio, dallas, on into little rock and parts of northern louisiana. 22 million people under some sort of flooding risk. 2 million people under a flood warning for texas on into northern louisiana. we watch this rain pushing in. severe storms, possibility of tornadoes continuing. more flooding as we move into today and into tomorrow. eventually it moves into the -- the rain moves into the northeast. look at these rainfall amounts. some places could pick up another 16 inches of rain from central louisiana on into arkansas. it is going to be catastrophic in some places. we're going to get to your local forecast coming up in the next

idaho. donald trump increased his lead in the republican presidential race winning tuesday's contest in michigan, mississippi, and hawaii. ted cruz captured idaho. >> on the democratic side, bernie sanders pulled off a major upset in michigan edging out hillary clinton in a state where she had been a heavy favorite. >> the political revolution that we are talking about is strong in every part of the country. and frankly, we believe that our strongest areas are yet to happen. >> michigan was the good news for sanders. but clinton easily won mississippi. the only other democratic contest that actually increased her overall lead in the delegate count. >> for more on last night's results, let's go back out to peter alexander. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. we want to break down the numbers for you very briefly. specific in michigan. let's begin on the republican

side. the key groups that supported donald trump. he dominated among voters who say they were looking for a candidate who tell it like it is. he was strong among those looking for someone outside the political establishment and winning big chunks with working class voters and voters looking for a change candidate as well. there are still some big divisions within the party right now revealed by these numbers right here. when asked if they would be satisfied with donald trump as the party nominee, only 28% of ted cruz supporters said yes. the vast majority said no. for john kasich, the number was even smaller. barely one in five kasich voters saying they'd be satisfied with trump as their nominee. switching sides to the democrats right now, that stunning upset in michigan with hillary clinton losing to bernie sanders. the top quality that sanders supporters say they were looking for in a candidate was honesty. he outperformed among

independents, among voters under the age of 45, those young voters that are critical for democrats and also among whites. that's the backdrop as we head into super tuesday less than a week from now. >> the next battleground of florida thank you. let's turn to the sad news from the beginning of the show. george martin, known as the fifth beatle has died. we have a look at his remarkable life and career. >> martin is the man who signed the beatles when no one else would. his work with them help create the sounds of the beatles. he was known as the fifth beating, record producer george martin was the man behind the band. after hearing their demo tape in 1962, sir george guided them through their skyrocketing ride to fame. an unlikely fit at first, this straight laced english gentleman

arranged some of the most ground-break music of the generation. he put his face in john lennon and paul mccartney as songwriters adding his unique spin on their records. he suggested they speed up the tempo on a ball lad which was their first number one hit. the rest of course is music history. from sergeant peppers lonely hearts club band, to abbey road, garnering six grammys and even an oscar nod for the score for "a hard day's night." tributes have been flooding social media all morning. ringo starr broke the news on twitter. paul mccartney issued a statement saying george was a true gentleman and like a second father to him. his legacy in the music business went well beyond the beatles too and was part of the sound track

of our lives. from james bond to elton john, martin was one of the minds behind this moving tribute to the late princess diana. ♪ in more modern times, he took a reimagined beatles to las vegas, creating a new album in the process. but the legacy this beatles boss leaves behind means that we never really have to say good-bye. ♪ >> i mean, you go back and listen to "yesterday," the string quartet in that song, that's the impact of sir george. he took that sound from the '60s and transformed it into the complex psychedelic sound of sergeant pepper. in my life. it's actually sir george playing the piano on that. major loss today. >> thank you for that.

now. >> i know you were. >> he's my dream child. looking at the radar. we have serious stuff going on. texas into louisiana. i mean, we've got flash flood watches out. severe thunderstorm warnings. it is rough. in fact, look at this, 22 million people at risk for some flooding. stretching from southern illinois all the way down to louisiana and texas. even into florida. we're talking heavy rains today. severe storms, possible tornadoes. these are going to be slow moving storms so they'll dump a ton of rain. by thursday, it makes its way to the northeast but heavy rain to the southeast, as well. look at the rainfall amounts. this is dangerous, folks. i'm talking possible catastrophic flooding. rain falling at the rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour. over the next 24 hours, we could see 6 to 10 inches, all totaled, stretching from galveston to little rock down to lake charles. could be 16 inches of rain. that is -- we're talking about hurricane-like rain out of this thing.
