a very good morning to you, thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. let's get right to our microclimate forecast as we're tracking that rain. a live look right now in san rafael on the left-hand side of your screen. the bay bridge on the right. you can see a little bit wet right now but looks can be deceiving as most of that rain accumulating just north of our cameras. >> in fact, sam, our live satellite radar shows that heavy band of wet weather moving south and slowly. we have team coverage and begin with meteorologist rob mayeda. another stronger system on its heels. >> for the south bay, we'll talk about friday storm. today's storm moving at a pace that you could probably literally outwalk it. hung up across sonoma county and starting to spill in parts of marin county and multiply that by six to eight hours of kind of stalled out time. you see the reasons why we're really watching the north bay for today in terms of localized

potential. but that flash flood watch up through sunday, 6:00 p.m. a prolonged stretch of potentially wet weather, at least for this morning in the north bay. probably going to stay that way through noon. south bay not really seeing much and through 3:00 p.m. today, that rain will be heavy at times santa rosa, especially highway 101. mike? >> we're looking over towards highway 101. not a real problem. the biggest backup we have in the bay and you expect this and also look at the clouds continuing to churn and change. talking about the north bay and rob is on his radar. lookic ov iing over here you ca that right now. look at your maps and see that on our sensors. a smooth drive through the area and no major problems, guys. san rafael doesn't show the radar and the green highlighting shows you damp roadways and highway 1 along the coast and areas north petaluma and santa rosa and no major problems reported. we have that translating to the road weather index and many more resources and i hand it over to you guys. >> we'll stay in the north bay. thank you, mike.

we'll check in with stephanie chuang live in marin county this morning. see any rain there yet? you don't have your hood on. >> you heard rob talk about how it is stalled out in sonoma county. slowly making its way to marin county but still dry out here. the warning, though, is for the commuters in the morning because there are the usual flooding warning signs and notorious where major pooling happens whenever it rains. as you heard rob mention, there is that flash flood watch in effect sunday night around small creeks and streams and we checked, again, minutes ago, still under three feet and 11.5 feet is considered critical level. we're talking about so we're looking at runoff that could cause some flooding and marin county says there are people who are constantly tracking those water levels thanks to technology. >> they have a web camera where we can visually online monitor them for the most part and

alerts that let us know the minute it rises a little bit too high for our taste. >> so, staying on top of that. people around the north bay also staying on top of it. they are beefing up storm preps by installing flood gates to seal water from coming in. many, in fact, remember the storms from ten years ago that flooded places along and it is not taking any chances. crews also in sonoma county are keeping a close eye there all throughout the weekend. especially on the russian river which could crest by the time the weekend is over. live here in marin county, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." coming up, a tempsolution for a long-term problem. chuck coppola is going to take a closer look at those. how the city of san francisco is trying to protect residences ands in case of floods with new equipment. just a couple hours ago crews started repairing a small sinkhole in san francisco.

it forced the closure of the off ramp at caesar chavez ramp. roadway reopened about 4:00 this morning. along with watching "today oin the bay" a great way to stay on top of all the wet weather to use your nbc bay area app. there you can click on the weather tab and also sign up for weather alerts. was we do brace for those storms or see them come in here wet weather will delay a pacifica apartment complex until next week now. sitting on top of that crumbling cliff will now come down next friday. crews have been in the process of gutting the inside of that building all week. the 20-unit apartment building was red tagged after the el nino storms of 2010. jurors continuing to deliberate this morning in the wrongful death lawsuit against san francisco police officers who shot and killed a man years ago. >> jason sawyer and rookie officer richard shift shot and killed a man at a park. he was threatening them with a gun which turned out to be a

taser stun gun. his parent are suing the officers and the city for an unspecified amount of financial compensation. he is head of one of the most prominent law schools in the country but now dean choudry is in trouble. when she complained to the skoom last year, administrators say choudhry admitted it. he was dock 10% of his salary for a year. the assistant said that is not enough and now suing the dean and the sxool. the school recently announced that choudhry will take an indefinite leave of absence. one san jose man spooked this morning as san oojose police in the process of looking for the suspect who attacked him with a baseball bat in his own driveway. >> this happened in the normally quiet almaden valley neighborhood. >> take a look. this is the site my neighborhood

uses and uses the data. represent property crimes and disord oer calls but the assaul that happened on tuesday night. the only violent assault in that area in the last month. that's little comfort to 61-year-old khales who was in his own driveway when a masked man approached him with a baseball bat and started swinging. it was about 8:20 tuesday night when he says the attacker came out of the darkness. khales believes he was attacked because the suspect wanted to steal his car. he tried to protect himself and he put up his arms and yelling until the attacker took off and his family came outside and called 911. >> i'm backing alike that and he's trying to hit me and i'm protecting myself. and, of course, he hit me once, twice. and then i'm backing away. >> my dad is just bleeding profusely just everywhere. it was so scary. >> san jose police searched for the suspect, but could not find

him. khales is speaking out to warn his neighbors and to ask them to consider putting up cameras which is what he's considering to do next. khales was attacked doing something we all do unloading groceries. make sure the lights are on and make sure someone keeps you company. we did a link on nbcbayarea.com at my neighborhood updates so you can look at the crime statistics where you live. a developing story right now. five people have died and three more are injured after a shooting during a backyard party in pennsylvania, just east of pittsburgh. that shooting happened just before the shooter fired from different angles and continued their fire as victims were trying to run out of the house. the gunman got away. multiple gunman. this morning they're still on the loose. turning now to our

microclimate forecast at 6:07. our satellite radar. look at that. very active this morning. heavy rain hovering over the north bay right now. >> the activity really concentrated so far in sonoma. let's bring in rob mayeda following it all morning long. >> the rain rates really impressive around santa rosa. about a of an inch of rain per hour and just off to the north of petaluma and really been that way since we've been on since 4:30 this morning. we see the downpours around windsor and not much south of sonoma county right now and that rain line will make its way to the south today and may not reach the south bay by the end of today. really talking about north bay and heavy rain at time through lunchtime and then towards the evening commute and the rain does begin to slowly spread into the central bay. for the south bay today, pretty mild and breezy. upper 60s close to 70 and maybe just a slight chance of seeing some rain and the rain throughout the bay today and tri-valley looking at rain chances late as we get towards

about the evening. look at these rain estimates. really just focused on the north bay thrgh 8:00 tonight and friday now you're seeing the rain start to throttle up now as the second storm comes in. have a look at that friday storm timeline coming up at 6:15 along with more rain for the weekend coming up in a few minutes. and right now time to check your thursday morning commute with mike. >> rob, we're watching the change not as dramatic but we're looking at more traffic and more glow. more moisture through san rafael. we don't see the rain just yet, but that moisture in the air we're starting to see some sheen on the rooftops and we'll look at your map. the road weather index indicating novato and petaluma and they're on the look out. a smoother drive the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights are on and notice how much lighter it is in the last couple of days and they're back on the rails. no problem on the roads for 880 south through union city, we have your typical slowing past

investigators say the two men got into an argument during a bus ride and then they both boarded the b.a.r.t. train where that shooting later happened. they are calling it the world's most boring car accident. we're seeing video of the collision between a google car and a vta bus. scott mcgrew very slow speed accident. >> very slow. this happened back in february. we told you all about it then. remarkable for just one reason. the first time an autonomous car was responsible for an accident. buses have lots of camera these days. you see the driver reacting to the accident. that google car clips the bus about midway down the side of the bus. as the google car tried tamoy to the left to avoid some sandbags. we have the bus' point of view, as well. it happened in the right lane where that extra room where you can have two vehicles and one turn to the right and the other straight. the google car was hugging the

curb and needed to move left taget around the sandbags. the google car saw the bus but figured the bus would slow down and move over a and the computers were wrong. speaking of self-driving cars. lean into your tv set because these pictures are a bit complicated. a patent filing by ford. on the left you see a standard passenger car and on the right, that's a movie screen that comes down from the ceiling so you can watch movies while the car is driving itself. this is not one of those patents from the olden days. ford just filed this. high-tech leaders are denying this article in headline in the "huffington post" claiming they got together at a secretive meeting to stop donald trump. a conservative group. it's it's secretive in that you weren't invited. the meeting was not secret and i was only there to talk about mars and sustainable energy and nuthing to do with trump.

now, the likely truth of the matter is any time a group of conservatives get together, they're going to talk about donald trump. and most likely how to stop him. that his name came up in a bill political meeting, guys. a headline, well written and probably a bit xanlerated. >> can we just jump back to elon mosqu musk. >> they're still looking there to that. thank you very much. 6:16 right now. developing story we're following this morning. heavy rain leave parts of the south literally under water. three drownings have been reported in oklahoma, texas and louisiana. this is drone video actually shot in northwest louisiana near shreveport and they're concerned a nearby levee may soon flow over and flood warnings remain

in effect north to springfield, illinois. much closer to home live look at the bay bridge this morning, all the wet weather on the way to our area prompting san francisco city leaders to take some extra measures to try to keep people and businesses safe from possible flooding. "today in the bay" chuck coppola joining us live where crews will put up flood barriers and pretty good chunk of the area in the mission right now. >> that's right. one of the more flood prone parts of san francisco and you can see down the block here some of the san francisco public utilities commission workers. they have been here since 3:00 a.m. putting these things together. these are temporary water barriers. these are filled with recycled water. and then these little pins are dropped in and locked them together. and together they are to keep this building from being flooded. at this location, at 17th and folsom these water barriers will

last. and linking them together. crews had deployed this same thing here last weekend but, frankly, it didn't rain hard enough or long enough to make much of a test for these. so, they'll try it again with this storm coming in today and tomorrow. it's a pilot program that cost $165,000 to buy these. if these work, though, you'll see these expanded to other parts of the city. the longer term solution, though, is something far more costly. the sewer improvement project that is slate tad begin some time later this year or perhaps next year and cost $250 million. however, for now, this is going to be the test run this weekend at this corner, 17th and folsom. we'll see how it performs. reporting live in san francisco, i'm chuck coppola. >> those flood barriers and no doubt some sandbags up in the north bay today as, rob, you were talking about the flood potential for a lot of the creek

and even the russian river there is. >> we're not just talking about the storm we are seeing there and three over the next three days. that is coming in. so, sustained the golden gate bridge not a bad commute at all. partly cloudy skies and breezy. here temperatures are pretty mild and story for toyota tahoe ski resort and you're looking at rain and wind at times for your thursday. but then temperatures progressively get cooler and better snowmaking conditions by the time you get to sunday as that colder air arrives. saturday and sunday should see pretty good snow. but right now pretty mild temperatures with the wind. speaking of mild temperatures here in the bay area, 50s and 60s outside for the moment and we do have quite a bit of rain, except it's sort of hung up across the north bay for you this morning. right there into santa rosa. you're still seeing the rain coming down. 0.25 per hour and sustained rain rates there. we'll continue to make the issue for localized flooding highest.

staying north of the golden gate for most of your morning commute before that rain line slowly begins to make its way to the south. as we get towards the afternoon, still dry in the south bay and probably stay that way in the south bay and as you see the rain line stalls out and the reason we might see localized flooding in the north bay and then as we head through the evening, we'll see some of the showers across the central bay area. highs today, upper 60s to near 70 in parts of the south bay. low to mid-60s closer to san francisco and nonstop off and on rain and for the north bay and tri-valley today highs in the mid-60s. a better chance for rain in the south bay and santa cruz mountains and pick up during the morning commute tomorrow and followed up by a few scattered thundershowers during the afternoon and another round come in for saturday night on into sunday. the periods of rain will continue. the most rain at the central bay and south bay will pick up for friday. saturday scattered showers and the next round comes in for sunday. the rain rates add up and that

sustain some rain rates per hour and power up the rain totals. by the time we get to friday two to three inches in the north bay and by monday maybe half a foot of rain in some of the hilltop across the north bay. the south bay one to three inches of rain. by the time we get out of the weekend. the good news for this morning's commute, most of the rain holding off for areas south of sonoma county. >> great news south of sonoma county. looking over here towards the bay bridge. look at. that's beautiful. that sunrise coming up. that's a view as you're coming over from san francisco over to the oakland side. these folks will have that in their rear view mirror and fastrak lanes and the map will show you that we have a smooth drive as far as the speed sensors go and just a tiny bit of slowing out of vallejo anding over towards novato and that green that road weather index. that weather data translating to north roads and maybe mist and drizzle in san rafael, but not much.

neither do the speed sensors and here's the san mateo bridge with a build off of the hayward side and typical here and more folks hit the dumbarton bridge. same thing with the south bay. we'll give you a look at the speed sensors for 101 and 85 showing a slowing and live look at the peninsula and it is clear and it is. university avenue off of 101. coming up, last night the democrats, tonight the republicans battling out in miami. >> clinton up by 30. trump by 23 in florida. but will it last? i'm tracie potts. the latest in politics, next.

right now at 6:30 another storm system slamming parts of the bay area. take a look at our live radar that shows the heaviest rain kind of taking its time stalling right now over the north bay. good morning on this thursday, i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we have team coverage and let's check in with meteorologist rob mayeda. today will be wet and even a stronger system on tap for tomorrow. >> at least for the south bay and santa cruz mountains and santa rosa you see in the rain right now. third of an inch falling right now at lake sonoma and already an inch of rain in the last six hours. so, clearly, that's where the heavy rain is right now. starting to approach marin county and as we go through the day today, the north bay that sees localized flooding and through sunday, 6:00 p.m., we

have that flash flood watch all throughout the north bay and across further south for the creeks and streams on the. but your forecast hour by hour today looks kind of dry around the south bay. upper 60s and breezy and mild with a lot of rain into the north bay and eventually spreading into san francisco approaching the evening commute. mike? >> looking towards berkeley where all these lanes filled in. these headlights westbound 80 and your commute direction. and we don't see much of the problem. year's thursday commute slowing from the top of the screen down to the berkeley curve and metering lights are on at the bay bridge and the volume builds a bit for 880 and 92 westbound and east bay towards the peninsula. southbound 680 shows a slight build, as well. moving the map down, you see the northbound route starting to build and tendency over the next half hour. i want to show you the fremont

camera and the traffic is moving well here i want to point out this flag showing the strong winds right here. we see it gusting, again. that is one thing playing a factor in the changing conditions. for more on that, i'll send it back to you guys. >> we'll send it to stephanie chuang. no rain just yet, but we know it's coming. >> we know it's coming and we heard rob talk about it. it is moving slowly this way. hit the area more like mid-morning and that is what you can expect. there are signs out, the usual ones that warn of the flooding here around lucky drive. about 100 feet out from where the cone is over there is where major pooling has caused some problems and the flash flood watch is in effect through the weekend. especially around small streams and creeks which is three feet right now. rob has been saying it will react more quickly to just a few hours of heavy rain. hitting flood stage is a possibility. north bay business owners, meantime, whose stores were under water during the storm ten years ago are also adding to storm preps this year, including

what a san jose man said happened to him. >> kris sanchez joining us now from the newsroom and this happened in a pretty quiet and safe neighborhood in alamaden valley. >> i looked up the crime stiss and this is the site, my neighborhood update which uses the phone data and the majority represent property crimes. that red v you see on jeremy drive is the assault from tuesday night. it is the only violent assault in that immediate area in the last month. this little comfort to devar khales who was in his own driveway when a masked man approached him with that baseball bat and starteding. it was 8:30 tuesday night when that attacker came right out of the darkness. khales believes he was attacked because the suspect wanted to steal his car. he backed nup to his garage yelling fending off the attacker until that man took off and his family came out and called 911.

another woman's apartment. in that case a woman scared him off. tonight neighbors will hold a community meeting to launch a neighborhood watch. san jose securihjose beefin security. a man was hiding inside the restroom when the woman came in. he apparently tried to pull the woman into the stall but she took off. he is now facing charges and the woman was not harmed. new details now about the stabbing suspect shot and killed by san jose police on monday night. police now identified him as 45-year-old byron roses of san jose. investigators say that he stabbed his astranged wife and her male friend at third and martha street. he ignored their ord oers to drop his knife. the male victim remains in critical condition. investigators say the suspect

was under a temporary restraining order to stay away from his wife. it is 6:36 right now. the department of justice continues to look into policies and practices that san francisco police department. the doj will hold a second community listing toniu taking place at gateway high school in the western edition. the goal is to help improve the relationship between san francisco police and the community. the department has been under fire after several controversial officer-involved shootings. a similar event was held on tuesday. protests over transit construction in the south bay. members of the san jose business group gathered at the alanrock library last night where the vta was planning to hold a meeting about the bus rapid transit project. a project that has been in the works for two years. delays have prolonged construction and many business owners say it's driving customers away. >> we brought on an independent auditor to come on and assess

the applications for assistance and they had to be able to show proof that they were in business during that time and that there were a loss. >> the vta says so far 154 business owners have filed for compensation and that it's paid out 41 claims. 6:38. back to the rain and the microclimate forecast this morning. as we take a live look the bay bridge on the right. most of the wet weather is lingering in the far north bay. let's check in with rob right now who has been tracking the radar for us. >> santa rosa rain rates of about a third of an inch of rain per hour and lake sonoma off to the west has picked up an inch of rain in the last four hours or so. you can see the rain for the most part staying north of the golden gate and the radar off to the north of the peninsula and that rain line starting to make the run to the south. look at the cities at the bottom of the screen. san jose, fremont, morgan hill and as we head towards noon not much changed there and areas

north of san francisco and even all the way through 4:00 as temperatures are pretty mild. mid up toer 60s and now starting to see some drops in livermore where the rain continues to fly into napa. the rain expectations here through 11:00 tonight and south bay not seeing much at all and then you add in friday and now you're looking at about an area south of san francisco and a lot more on that in the north bay. so, heavy rain to follow. see the temperatures cooling down and good for snow levels in the sierra. snow flying down maybe below 5,000 feet this weekend. something to keep in mind if you travel to the high country for the weekend. let's send it over to mike. >> we'll talk high rise over here for the san mateo bridge. flat section slows heading over towards the peninsula. look at the clouds just athe peninsula hills and san mateo hills. we have changing conditions. look at your map, not changing so dramatically that the morning commute is a problem. also southbound 880 and 680 both

saturday and sunday. should be fantastic seeing this weekend as thor temperatures arrive adding to the already 146 inch base there in the sierra. great skiing conditions this weekend. right now 50s and 60s outside and a lot of rain really just locked in here into the north bay. it's santa rosa over towards ronard park and north bay you're seeing the rain. the rain line does stop as you get towards san rafael and as you see here off the coast off of san francisco and the peninsula. this is the rain starting to make its slowly to the south as you head through the afternoon and not do much around the south bay and even into the evening, you see how the rain stalls out right over the central bay. today upper 60s and maybe close to 70s around the south bay and temperatures in the mid-60s around san francisco and those rain chances stay throughout the day there in the north bay at those highs in the low 60s. better chances for rain coming in for friday and another one on sunday for the rest of the bay area, these will be the two big rain producers for places like

san jose and the santa cruz mountains as the rain totals continue to add on up. here's your friday forecast now. notes for the morning, the rain does pick up bay area wide into the afternoon more scattered showers and as we add all this rain up and here's the issue in the north bay as we get into friday night, the coastal hilltops which at around 32 feet. 31.5 around 9:00 in the morning. so, the flood risk will continue around parts of the north bay and 6:00 sunday and begin to shut this pattern down and high pressure building in by next monday. and stormy through monday and by and wednesday high pressure returns and you prepare for a very stormy commute tomorrow morning. right now, though, mike, most of that rain staying north of marin county. we' >> we're watching highway 101. 101 over here in san jose. we did have some slowing and a good build and then things calm down and getting a break here

just north of 680. palo alto shows a similar volume of traffic and these folks are traveling south and that sun will hit the windshield. expect slowing here and 280 and that sun is an issue. the map will show you the speeds are not a big surprise or a problem. northbound routes 101 at capital and again at 680 and 87 and 85 show that build and palo alto doesn't have that problem. make things crowded for 101 and same thing for the san mateo bridge. there's the bay bridge and some slowing and down the upper east shore freeway. that's the only real congested spot and aside a drive from novato down to san rafael and mist and drizzle and north of there. back to you. >> thank you. it is 6:52. attacked with a baseball bat in his own driveway. the warning a south bay man has for his drivers in the normally quiet almaden valley neighborhood. i'm stephanie chuang live in

stephanie chuang "today in the bay." good morning, i'm chuck coppola where they are bracing for the coming storm by putting up temporary water barriers. these interlocking blocks. they are filled with recycled water and you see some of this activity just beginning now. they put up 122 of these water wear barriers around the building at 17th and folsom hoping to keep the water that sometimes floods this intersection from going into the building causing complaints and lawsuits. crews tried this about last weekend and it didn't rain hard enough for them to get a good test, but this pilot program that cost $165,000 may be expanded to other parts of the city if it works. we shall see. reporting live in san francisco, i'm chuck coppola, "today in the bay." >> a lot of people watching that. watching the skies for us, rob. tracking this radar. >> we're watching the radar and some of the city cameras around the bay area looking back from belvedere this morning.
