we're waking up to clouds and some rain start ing ing to fall. even the north bay starting to see some showers. this is the beginning of the next round of rain. you can see looking at some very heavy rain this morning. and that's all going to slide south. the north bay you'll see the showers first. we're expecting to see the heavier rain move in. we're looking a the mostly cloudy skies. even in san francisco some drizzle. lunchtime for san francisco in the north bay, you'll see the rain. then this afternoon once the sun goes down, that's expected to continue overnight and into tomorrow. that's why we have flash flood watches posted for the north bay. all the concerns we're expecting to see the river levels rising. even the potential for some warmer weather and some 70s. >> keeping us on our toes. thank you. new this morning, a party bus full of people shot at near

the bay bridge toll plaza. it happened around 2:30 this morning. some sort of incident began on the bay bridge and led to a car shooting at the party bus in the area of 5th and union streets. at least one person was shot. several others were sent to the hospital. the investigation is ongoing. like anthony said, a brief break in the rain, but big problems remain for some residents in pacifica in particular. crews were busy working through the night to remove a tree that went crashing down on to a home. they are scrambling before the next big storm strikes. power in the area momentarily was knocked out. no report of any gas leak or any other issues. but concerned neighbors say they are glad that situation wasn't worse. >> if that tree had come down at a different angle, only a matter of feet, that whole power line

would have come down. that entire power line. if that whole thing came down, we'd have a fire ball. >> no one was inside the home when the tree collapsed. downed trees are a concern all over the bay area. this 80-foot tree came crashing down in oakland hills. as you can see, part of the house completely crushed. the tree also took down a power line. crews worked well into the night to clear it from blocking the road. if you're headed out in the north bay this weekend, be prepared for another round of storms as anthony just said and flooding. parts of the north bay are seeing drizzle this morning. flood waters have taken over vineyards and streets. at last check the river was at 26 feet. flood stage is 32 feet. drought stricken trees are leaning. roots are exposed and that's causing locals to be concerned. >> when you walk down, those trees are really scary.

ones trump has made about wanting to punch protesters in the nose, get them out of here, put them on a stretcher, mexican are rapists and murders. that's the people who are offended begin to get more and more angry and tonight the bubble burst. >> chicago police say five people were arrested, two officers were injured. no official word on when that rally will be rescheduled. and trump's opponents were quick to react. ted cruz says trump is responsible for the violence at his own rallies. >> it's a sad day. political discourse without a threat of violence. >> his campaign is about intriguing our people together. not letting donald trump or anybody else divide us up.

>> as you just saw there, sanders was in the chicago area and his rally went down as planned. . both are positioning themselves for next tuesday where pry u marries are happening in six states. a deadly shooting in the south bay. it happened before 11:00 last night in san jose. two men were taken to the hospital where one later died. officers responded to the scene at tully road near king road and highway 101. no word yet on any shooters, but if you were there and have information, you're asked to contact san jose police. investigators also in san jose are working to piece together what led to a car crash and whether a shooting was involved. this silver ford you see there smashed into a tree around the same time neighbors reported hearing gunshots. it happened 2:30 afternoon in south san jose. an elementary school was put on lockdown.

(lib) welcome back at 7:14 on your saturday morning. we are looking at cloudy skies over san francisco, but it looks beautiful as we get a break from the rain this morning. meteorologist anthony slaughter says it will be returning the rest of the weekend. if you're looking to get out of town away from the rain in time for spring break, many of the biggest airports across the country are reporting long lines at security check points, longer than usual. the tsa is blaming a staffing problem. also a record increase in travelers and more passengers carrying on luggage instead of paying to check bags. the problem has led to

the next silicon valley. every one of them is trying. they are all trying to be us. what does that tell you. >> in san jose, ian cull, nbc bay u area news. we are one week and a day away from the official start of spring, but the sierra still looks like a winter wonderland. the problem is getting to that fresh snow is difficult. the mixture of snow and ice made it very difficult for some drivers yesterday evening. the traffic was slow because of an accident and some roads required tire chains. we're see a small break from the rain this morning. anthony slaughter has a look at our weekend forecast. you're saying the north bay is seeing sprinkles. >> drizzle, sprinkles, call it that if you want. >> i always use the wrong weather terminology. that's your job. >> you can see we're looking at the golden gate bridge. a little breeze building over

the bridge and really across the north bay u. the winds are going to kick off as the rain starts to move into the bay area. you can see some droplets starting to form on the camera. as we get you into the forecast, we're expect ing ing to see sho as we move through the next couple days. right now we're looking at light stuff. this is really the most that we're seeing on the radar. you head to the north, that's where the heavy rain is right now. this is the cold front that's dpoing to sag south through the day u and bring rain to the north bay first. same deal for san francisco. the east bay at the peninsula and south bay, we won't see the rain until the sun goes down this evening. we'll see sunshine in the south bay and the east bay. that will get us to 60 degrees. maybe 61 for south bay. but those showers are going to roll in as we move towards the evening. san francisco, the north bay, that's where you want to make sure you have indoor plans today because it's going to be on and

off rain all day long. look at this plume of moisture across the pacific. this is what's headed our way tonight and tomorrow. we're expecting steady rain towards midnight into sunday. and we're expecting that flash flood wash to stay posted through sunday evening. because this afternoon, showers start to roll back into the north bay and going to continue the rain in the north bay through tonight into tomorrow morning. so there might not even be much of a break in the rain for parts of the north bay. san francisco, you'll see the heavy rain start to arrive around sunrise tomorrow morning. and that will be with us through the day on sunday. it will be a wet, gray day across the bay area at least for sunday. we'll see some sunshine. look at the rainfall amounts for the first batch of rain today. less than a tenth of an inch for the trivalley and south bay. that's where we're expecting to see the sunshine. expecting close to an inch for napa. even san francisco, half an inch. the heavy rain moves in tonight and look how the rainfall

amounts really add up. over an inch in the north bay. definitely enough to cause more flooding. walnut creek could see an inch as well. half-moon bay same deal. the south bay, only expecting less than half an inch of rainfall. it's not going to be a huge rainmaker for the south bay. we are expecting to see pretty decent rainfall. even in san francisco over the next 24 to 48 hours. winds will kick up this afternoon. mostly from the peninsula north. you can see half-moon bay. stronger winds tomorrow and more widespre widespread. look at how widespread. gusts up to 31. santa rosa, 22. and then tomorrow evening those winds will subside. 15 to 35-mile-per-hour wind gusts are expected. just a quick update on the russian river. today it's starting to fall from

7:30 on the dot on this saturday morning. we're taking a live look at trees swaying in san jose. dry in san jose right now, but some of us are waking up to just a little bit of rain. good morning to you, thank you for joining us. i'm kira klapper. anthony slaughter has a look at the forecast. >> we're waking up to showers north of the golden gate bridge. it's all very light. we are expecting to see moderate to heavy rain move in towards the afternoon and evening hours. that's going to continue into the overnight hours through the day tomorrow. so once you start to see the rain later on today, it's going to continue and will be a prolonged rain event. that's why we have flash flood watches for the north bay. same for the south bay. 51 in san francisco. we are waking up to areas of light drizzle and sprinkles. later on this afternoon, on and off rain for the north bay around lunchtime. same deal for san francisco for

>> you probably can never be overprepare ued for anything. we take our preparation seriously. we encourage our customers to be prepared also. >> at last check the biggest outages are affecting 1300 people in the east bay and 800 homes on the peninsula. the rain could cause new problems for people in the santa cruz mountains who already are trying to recover from this week's storm. her home in paradise park was flooded by an overflooding river earlier in the week. yesterday they raced to evaluate the damage done in case it spills over again. >> i don't know what to do to get started. i don't know if it's going to flood again. what we should do, i'm at a loss. >> she watched the river rise yesterday but it it did not overflow. she says she doesn't expect to rest easy until this weekend's storm system passes. you can stay ahead of the storms

>> reporter: crowds took to the streets after a rally for presidential candidate donald trump was postponed. hundreds of demonstrators had gathered earlier in the day around the pavilion at the university of illinois chicago. they were protesting the appearance by the front runner. inside the venue an audience packed with trump supporters and opponents. the trump campaign decided to postpone because of safety concerns. >> for the safety of all the tens of thousands of people that have gathered in and around the arena tonight's rally will be postponed until another date. >> there was an immediate uproar from the crowd. punches thrown, signs torn, protesters and supporters clashing inside the arena. in a phone interview, trump said the protests highlight america's anger. >> there's so much anger in it the country. and it's not directed at me or anything. it's just directed at what's

both parties are positioning themselves for tuesday when there are primaries in six states. back here in the bay area, san francisco's police watchdog group says officers wrongly arrested a public defender last year. online video of her getting handcuffed went viral. she claimed police overreacted and the city police oversight board agree d. members concluded the four police officers had no value ud reason to detain her. at the time of the arrest, she had been advise her clint he didn't have to answer questions. until now had defended the officer's actions. san francisco has now officially become the second city in the country to raise the age for purchasing tobacco to 21. the mayor signed the bill yesterday. it extends to e-grets and smokeless fak as wesmoke less tobacco as well. state lawmakers have approved a

bill to raise the purchasing age to 21 across california. the bill heads to the governor's desk. the joe's crab shack restaurant chain is apologizing over what appears to be a photo of a lynching using at their restaurant. a minnesota couple took the photo embedded in a table in minnesota. the picture from the late 1800 shows a large group of white people watching a public execution of at least one black person. the caption reads all i said was that i didn't like the gumbo. >> i felt sick and confused and it was just sickening. it was disgusting. >> the manager says he never knew the photo existed. the chain has issued an apology and promptly removed the photo. just shy of 7:40. we have much more ahead. the warriors look to get even against the team that's responsible for one of their six losses this season.

welcome back. we're taking a live look outside. the arena was rocking again as the warriors look to stay undefeated. the worst loss of the the season came at the hands of portland last month, so payback was on the mind of the team and fans last night. much like last year's playoffs, riley curry stole the show. it happened to be a great night for her dad and fellow brother. the pair combined for 71 points. this one was never in doubt. the warriors avenge their loss. golden state has won 47 consecutive games at home. they won 128-112. it was a good one. much more ahead on today in the

welcome back. 7:45 the time. get you up to speed with your microclie kmat forecast. we have showers starting to develop that's going to move through. most of it is concentrated along the inner bay. you zoom out u and will notice there's the heavy rain across the north bay. expect iing to make its way in very shortly. the north bay you'll see the rain first. then by lunchtime in san francisco, we'll see the rain spread southward and even to the east bay later on this afternoon and evening once we get towards sunset. that's when the rain will move

there. temperatures will stay cool where we stay cloudy and rainy is where we'll stay in the 50s. we'll see a few peeks of sunshine in the south bay. temperatures close to 60 degrees later on this afternoon. we have a steady rain for sunday coming. this is that plume of moisture across the pacific. that's going to move through tonight. once it does move through, it's going to continue to rain into sunday. even sunday night into monday morning. here we go once again. a prolonged period of rainfall expected for the north bay. this is 2:00. there's the cold front. that's when the rain will start to pick up across the north bay. even in san francisco, then as we move to the evening hours, we'll see spotty rain for the east bay and south bay. nothing really heavy for those locations it's not going to get heavy for the south bay until tomorrow morning. sunrise, same for the trivalley. then that will scoot out of here and we'll continue to see the trend of on and off rain for your sunday. for today, mostly a north bay and peninsula rain event.

even parts of the east bay we'll see heavy rain. this is the look of the amount of rain by the end of the day. san jose, less than .1. not a big event there. but walnut creek, napa, over half an inch of rain just today. then the cold front moves on through and the storm door opens and tomorrow we're expecting another half an inch of rainfall in places like santa rosa and napa. that will put our weekend total over 1 inch. san francisco will get close to an inch. in san jose, we're only expecting less than half an inch of rainfall from both of these storms. it's not going to be a huge rain for the south bay. it it will be for the north bay. we have flash flood watches posted. winds will pick up this afternoon as a cold front moves on through. they will die u down tonight but it picks right back up. anywhere from 15 to 35 miles per hour. then as we move to the evening hours, things will subside. here's a quick update on the

russian river. the crest was around 26 feet. it's starting to fall off and will continue to rise through the day tomorrow. then by monday will crest up to 25 feet. the good news is not expected to go above flood stage. we have lots of flood watches posted through the sacramento value e lee. even flash flood watches for the bay as well. winter storm warnings if you're doing any traveling there, they are expecting wind, rain and snow. look at this, flood watch even as high as 4 feet. it's going to be rainy and snowy and windy. any trvling there, do it now because the afternoon hours it will be coming down u. 2 to 4 feet of new snow expected across parts of the higher elevation. towards the upcoming week, things will dry out. and then we warm up. we're talking the return of 70s towards monday, tuesday and wednesday. 74 by wednesday here. but weekend rain is in the forecast. just keep that in mind as you move about through your weekend

shooting. we have breaking news. san jose police are investigating an officer-involved shooting. police say someone shot at the officers at least once and officers fired back. the shooter was hit and taken to the hospital but is expected to be o okay. no officers were hurt. this happened overnight near fruitdale and maieridian avenue. at 7:53, preparing for everything even the worst. brazil's armed forces carried out a large scale drill in rio with the summer olympics in mind. the drill simulated a seran gas attack. it was the latest of several exercises conducted with the help of american security experts. brazil has no history of major terror attacks, but no chances are being taken. the games kick off august 5th and can be seen here on nbc bay

this morning some special guests are here with josie and cinnamon and they are ready for new homes. they have been ready for new homes for quite some time. you have holding cinnamon. you had cinnamon on a year ago and had a litter of puppies. those puppies were all adopted. and she's still here for some reason. >> she's the sweetest. she's probably our shelter staff's favorite dog. we just don't understand why she's still around. >> she's two and a half. she's a chiwawa. >> terrier, jack russell mix. >> she's sweet, she's small. and you think maybe some people might be alarmed by it's an older dog and that's why they don't want to take it home right away. but she's only two and a half.
