and after days of nonstop rain, demolition continues on this apartment complex teetering on the edge of a cliff in pacifica. the progress being made before it is too late. "today in the bay" starts now. and a very good monday morning to you, thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. a healthy dose of rain over the weekend and good morning, kari. >> good morning. we are starting oout with some drier conditions. a chance to dry out after such a soggy weekend. but those roads are still wet as you head out this morning. now, temperatures in the upper 40s, even to mid-50s for most of the bay area and into this afternoon we're looking at highs around 62 degrees in the north bay. 60 in san francisco and some 6 o0s today. some 70s for the middle of the week. i'll detail that coming up. let's get an update on what is happening at the bay bridge now with mike. >> kari, the bay bridge toll plaza has a few folks waiting to pay the cash. show you the emoryville camera.

the silhouettes in san francisco and also see a little shake of the camera and little wind going on and nothing major here. watch the roadways, as well. slicker roadways and little wind catching you across the bridge and you don't see a problem with the speed sensors and entire bay looks all right as far as the speed sensors. i do want to get this. this is a surprise for peninsula drivers south 101 at holly and still have one lane open after an earlier crash there. back to you. >> mike, thank you. breaking overnight in the east bay. a daring rescue right near discovery bay. a head-on collision ending with a car plunging into a nearby creek that killed two people. >> chris kris, three children w hurt. >> sent their suv off the road over an embankment and into the water and they were rescued by a good samaritan who stopped to help and just wanted to do the right thing. but looking that video, it's shocking that anyone could have
5:02 am
survived this violent head on crash. the red pickup truck with the tan camper shell and the suv that the children were in. the children all survived, as we said, as did one of the adlts that they were with. sadly, two of the people in that suv with them did not survive. we don't know what their relation is to those children at this point. i have to tell you, it's dark at night. only one lane in each direction and, according to the chp, it appears that the crash happened when one of the drivers was going the wrong direction and smashed into the other vehicle head on. it was also raining at the time. the suv that the children were in went over the embankment and into the water. >> all the children are fine. suffered minor injuries. one of the adults was also extricated and appears he suffered minor injuries. but there were two individuals, a male and a female that didn't survive the crash. >> again, a man and a woman in that suv with the children did not survive. another adult was injured in
5:03 am
that suv. the three children, again, though, are okay. the driver of the other vehicle, that pickup truck with the camper shell had to be extricated and also has minor injuries. now, the crash happened before midnight and shut down the roadway for hours, but it is open, once again, this morning. it was raining pretty heavy at the time of this crash and we don't know. that was a factor, but we do know when it's raining it steaks a lot longer to stop. do be careful out there. in the newsroom, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." breaking news this morning now in kansas. more than a dozen people have been injured in an amtrak train derailment. passengers were riding amtrak southwest train as it traveled from l.a. to chicago. five cars derailed just after midnight local time. about 20 miles west of dodge city. 29 people were injured. amtrak says that none of those injuries are considered to be life threatening, but 128 people onboard that train. investigators are looking into what caused the derailment. at 5:03. to this developing story.

a sinkhole opens up rupturing a gas line and forcing shelter in place for hundreds of people in moraga. adjacent to morago road. >> damian, we know the gas leak has been capped and the shelter in place has been lifted. the work and thim pact on oresidents far from over. >> yeah, it really. they're having to wake up today to cold showers because 2,500 customers here remain without gas. pg&e will have to go out early this morning, day break and go out and turn on the gas for every individual home. it might take some time. they're still trying to assess the damage of this sinkhole here in morago but headaches for a lot of people here. the problem is far from over for the locals. repair crews spent the night trying to solve the problem, but it's easier said than done. the huge sinkhole opened up here yesterday. the area is a major artery for

those trying to get around in morago and one of the main ways to get to and from st. mary's college. we're told this section will be closed for the foreseeable future. yesterday a sinkhole ruptured a four inch distribution line and that's what forced the evacuation of a shopping center and several restaurants. we did speak just a short while ago with the pg &e spokeswoman here at the scene. >> because of this continuing hazard of the sinkhole, it's continuing to grow. we decided to use seven of our valves to shut off the gas. and that's impacted service now to 2,500 customers. >> and, again, the shelter in place has been lifted here in moraga. but the plan aheaded if you're headed to the st. mary's college yare yeah, it may take you some time to get through some of the alternates routes here. if you're waking up in the area and you might not have any hot

it is to prevent this large apartment complex from tumbling into the ocean. demolition, as you mentioned, began on saturday. about three-quarters of 35% of the complex has been removed. hauled off to the landfill. the work can be done by mid-week and possibly today. it depends on the weather. the city declared this 20-unit apartment complex unsafe and forced its residents to move out. this was back in 20 o10. it was so severe that parts of the complex was teetering on the edge. this structure was supposed to come down a long time ago but didn't because of a deispute between the city and the owner. >> it is a private property. this should be falling to the owner to taking care of this, but he's not. this building has been red tagged since 2010. he's had an opportunity to either shore up the cliff like his neighbors have done or

demolish the building and he has done neither. the city started taking action last summer to hold him accountable. >> the apartment complex next door was torn down last month. this summer the city hopes to find a way to better stabilize the street that i'm standing on and the utilities underneath from going into the ocean, as well. >> bob, thank you very much. little break in the rain today, at least it was scattered showers out there, kari. >> we do have a couple sprinkles out there and just enough to make those roads stay wet as you head out this morning. for the most part, this storm system is winding down. we will get some sunshine. today we're looking at highs in the low 60s in the south bay. burlingame at 6 o0 degrees and 63 in santa rosa and antioch today 62 and also 62 in livermore. let's get an update on what's happening in oakland now from mike. >> we'll start with a live look here of the oakland coliseum

5:13 am
now, donald trump is leading in many of those states, not in ohio, though. kasich now has a six-point edge in ohio. but trump is also fighting allegations that he is inciting the violence that is surrounding some of his campaigns. we saw it in chicago on friday where he had to cancel. he defended that in florida last night saying it was the right decision. we saw it over the weekend in missouri. and in ohio with the secret service having to get involved. donald trump said he's not setting the stage for that. he's not responsible although democrats and republicans on both sides say he's inciting the violence by making comments like people and offering to pay the legal fees for someone who was caught on tape hitting a protester, punching a protester at one of the trump rallies. trump says not responsible. >> and, tracie, we are hearing the reporter that trump's campaign manager is leaving her job. do we know why.

some rain there. as we go hour by hour in san francisco, we're staying in the mid-50s throughout the morning and the sun starts to peek out as we go closer to that lunchtime hour. this afternoon, we'll be in the upper 50s and a few spots hitting right about 60 degrees. our winds also coming in from the north and northwest. that will give us a breezy wind up to about 15 to 20 miles an hour. not as windy, once again, our are slowly starting to calm down as our weather calms down, as well. this is the setup we had over the weekend. the jet stream was set up right over the bay area and allowing for that rain train to continue to roll on in. and then as we go through the week, the jet stream will lift farther to the north and then high pressure will move in. that will give us sinking air and clear skies and allow temperatures to warm over the next several days and taking a look at over the next three days. and our highs from the upper 60s tomorrow into the upper 70s by thursday. not only in the south bay, but the peninsula. and we're looking at some low

we should start to see things calming down. after such a rough weekend, we had some waves over 20 feet. so t was all starting to, all starting to calm down as we go low the day. and this is part of the reason why we had the jet stream set up right over the bay area. and this is the flow of the upper level winds that carries those low pressure systems and those storms. as we go through the week, that jet stream lifts to the north. we get some high pressure in here and that will cause the sinking air, the clear skies and also some warming temperatures. it won't be until this weekend when we start to see a little bit of shift that pattern that could bring in another chance of rain. so, our temperatures continue to warm in the south bay. we will be in the upper 60s tomorrow, but upper 70s by thursday. more of the same in the peninsula with trending more into the mid-70s. in the east bay, we're up to 75 degrees on thursday. overall, a very nice week. and a chance to dry out after such a soggy weekend. let's get an update on what is happening on the roadways now from mike. >> the bay bridge toll plaza
