bay and north bay and san francisco, the peninsula and east bay, 69 degrees, not a bad afternoon. i'll let you know how long this kind of weather lasts. that's coming up in a few minutes. let's get an update what's happening in the east bay with mike. >> i do want to give you an update for the south bay. chp says southbound 281 lane will be blocked a good amount of time for a sig-alert, at least a half hour. our photographer went by and said there was one car on its side and trying to clear that quickly with a little bit of slowing at the scene. north bay is where you see that. the rest of the day moves well. a quick look at berkeley shows traffic flowing well and metering lights are on at berkeley. you guys have a bigger news to share for berkeley. >> after shooting two people at berkeley about a block from the arby b.a.r.t. station, happened

about five hours ago and police are still on the scene. >> joining us now from the scene, we came on at 4:30 with this news. the victims suffered serious injuries fighting for their lives. >> reporter: they are fighting for their lives at the same hospital, highland in oakland. it happened at tremont, just down the street and investiga r investigators have been focused on that white car all day long. the man and woman were sitting in that car when someone shot them. the windows appear shot out. for whatever reason, they don't call 911. the man who was shot several times ended up on someone's porch to ask for help and a woman dropped off at a medical center and transferred to highland because she and the man suffered such injuries. they want to catch whoever is behind this double shooting and meantime police are still looking information the

gunman -- looking for the gunman in yesterday's shooting very close to university avenue. we do not know the condition of that victim but know police have ordered a shelter in place and later lifted it closer to the evening. that did not happen in this double shooting. no arrest made in either of the shootings in berkeley. live this morning in berkeley. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> also new this morning in two hours, the president will announce his supreme court nominee to replace the late justice antonin scalia. this will happen in a rose garden ceremony 8:00 our time. we're watching this very closely. sources say the president has narrowed his list down to three appeals court judges, including paul watford, the appeals court judge from san francisco. if nominated he would be the third african-american to sit on the nation's highest court and the fourth from california. when the president makes his

announcement, we will bring it to you live here in an nbc news special report. >> from president obama to presidentsal hopefuls. >> joining us now, a clean sweep for clinton, five different sta states, missouri was awfully close. the republican candidates now down to three. >> right. we said florida would be a state to watch not just because of those final poll numbers but give you a look at some story lines that developed there. donald trump won florida with 46% of the vote. he gets all 99 delegates because it is a winner take all state. however in exit polling, half of the republican voters in florida said they would not vote for trump in november, they would go third party. trump spend 2$2.2 million in ad in florida. there were 15$15.6 million wort of pro rubio anti-trump ads in

florida. didn't do marco rubio any good and he dropped out of the race after that embarrassing loss in his home state of florida. john kasich won his home state of florida and this morning, trump said it's time for him to go. trump talked about the negative ads against him in florida and clinton about the consequences of this particular campaign. >> can you explain to it me because i can't. my numbers went up. i don't understand it. nobody understands it. >> the next president will walk into the oval office next january, sit down at that desk and start making decisions that will affect the lives and the livelihoods of everyone in this country, indeed everyone on this planet. >> clinton now has nearly double the numbers senator sanders does

but he is not throwing in the towel next week and already in arizona. you mentioned the polls in florida, nearly half the voters there and north carolina picked someone other than donald trump which fuels that talk of the contested convention in july. in an exclusive interview on cnbc, speaker of the house, paul ryan said he chose not to run for president deliberately but declined to say whether he would accept that nomination if it comes to it. >> people say what about the contested convention? well, there are a lot of people running for president. we'll see. who knows? >> it wasn't long ago paul ryan said he would not be the speaker of the house only to reconsider amid pressure from his party, so that is certainly something to watch today. >> who knows doesn't necessarily mean don't consider me under any circumstances. definitely leaving that door open. from who knows to what's next? next week. arizona to utah heading to the

polls march 22nd. four days later, d.c. on the 26th. a month out, it's the next big one in terms of delegate haul, connect, pennsylvania and rhode island. the nomination might already be determined at that point. >> it's 6:07 right now. it happened again. shots fired on a busy east bay freeway, this time at 5:15 on i-80. a woman was driving east bay when a green toyota pulled up next to her. our nbc chopper flew over the area last night but didn't see signs of police activity. the shooter rolled down his window and pointed a gun into the air and fired multiple shots. the green toyota driver took off. sheriff laurie smith is lying out a new 13 step plan to make sweeping changes to santa clara county's troubled jail system. smith presented her recommendations yesterday to a

public safety committee. those reforms come in the wake of last year's death of a mentally ill inmate. thee guards facing murder charges. include boosting access to medical care, out side oversight and civilian board. today's santa fe city council will consider a proposal to tie annual rate increases to inflation according to the mercury news. if it passes it means landlords can't just increase rents beyond the consumer price index last year, about a third of what's aloud by the 30-year-old rent control law. businesses hit hard by more than two weeks of street clos e closures during the super bowl including street vendors forced to move from high volume areas like this plaza. city leaders have still not announced the amount of tax revenues actually generated by

♪ the morgan hilteenager vanished - fouyears ago tod - it has been four painful years for the family of sierra lamar. the teenager disappeared four years ago today while walking to school. police say she was murdered but her body yet to be found. >> bob is live in morgan hill on this variance, danniversary. despite this, her family and friends will search for sierra

this weekend. >> reporter: they are. it will be one of many searches that have taken place. you might recall it was march 16th of 2012, 4 years ago today sierra lamar was supposed to catch a school bus at this intersection behind me, a couple blocks behind me at morgan hill. the 15-year-old never made to it this location. she disappeared at some point between here and her house and never seen again. for months, volunteers mounted an intense search of the south county to find her remains. the sheriff's office does believe she was abducted and killed by torres. garcia torres trial ed yould to start next month. scheduled next month. the grand jury was never instructed to consider an aiding and abetting role, what if

garcia torres was only aiding and abetting in the murder not sayi ining he was involved in t disappearance but that they are targeting the instructions given to the grand jury. the judge denied that request. as far as the search, family and friends and volunteers this weekend at 9:15 saturday on eastman canyon road in morgan hill. reporting live here, bob redell. new details on the amtrak train derailment in kansas that injured more than 30 people on monday. a feed truck from a nearby cattle ranch hit the track and shifted it shortly before the train derailed. investigators say the impact of the truck shifted the track 12 to 14 inches. the ntsb is still investigating. if you thought your morning commute was a headache, imagine being a washington, d.c. comm e commuter later today. more than 700,000 people have to find another way to get to work because the city is shutting

down its subway system for inspections more than a day. one of the biggest in the country is shutting down transportation, all this coming av two separate fire s ignited inside the subway lines. d.c. has the second largest subway system in america. >> an important thing to check i suppose. one city councilman went far beyond the call of duty and h p helped take down a carjacking suspect. >> councilman peralez is a former police officer and when he heard a commotion outside the shop he went to take a look. police say a carjacking suspect was trying to flee the scene after being chased by the victim's two children who were in another car and that's when the councilman sprung into action. >> the suspect was trying to take off and two kids were yelling saying, stop!

days. it's 49 degrees in san francisco. 46 degrees in the peninsula. the south bay at 44 degrees. let's get a closer look. 43 degrees at san a rosa and novato, 50 degrees. we will stay with the jet stream taking all the showers and it also brought in beneficial snow for the sierra. look how warm the temperature is the next few days. squaw valley and alpine meadows, up to 54 today and 57 tomorrow. look at the summit, snow pack at 164 inches. at the base, it's 70 inches but unfortunately some will be me melting. we have warm temperatures in the south bay. the warmest day of the week is tomorrow, 76 degrees, 74 in peninsula. we will have it coming back down

a couple degrees on friday. a few clouds mixing in, in the north bay. 76 degrees on thursday and 71 on friday. as we head to the weekend, we will have some cooler temperatures. it stays dry, as we go into the next few days, today, we'll have 60s along the immediate coast, 70s for the inland areas and see a little bit of shift in those temperatures with more widespread 70s tomorrow and more 60s moving back in, as we head to friday afternoon. this weekend we will have widespread 60s and a few spots below 70s, like the peninsula and tri-valley and south bay and leading us to wet weather that will arrive here as we get ready to start the new week. another look at the forecast coming up. mike gives us a look at what's happening as you head out the door for that commute right now. >> that's right. we have our eyes on the south bay because of that crash. 280. officers say they're clearing it very quickly and we will see if we can bring video for you.

of an explosion at a medilmarij the flames left two employe severely burned. shocking video to show you after a shocking explosion at medical marijuana shop. it left an employee severely bu burned. it happened last year but they just released that video. the worker was using butane to extract thc from marijuana to make cannabis oil and it the room suddenly burst into flames and both men suffered third degree burns. google submitted a plan for a new campus located near its current headquarters asking to chop down more than 100 red road tr trees, google claiming they have

and speeds and the bay bridge no surprise, the metering lights are on. left approach, very good commute now. back to you. an update to breaking news, we've been following, shell casings marking the spot in berkeley that happened a half hour ago, police still in the arby b.a.r.t. station to protect the evidence. >> police have been at the active scene since early this morning and victims in critical condition. >> reporter: they're both fig fighting for their lives, the gunman still on the run. let me set the scene for what police believe happened here. a man and a woman sitting in that white car with the doors open mostly residential area. the windows appear to be shot out at 1:00 in the morning. for whatever reason the two victims don't call 911. the man shot several times to ask for help and the woman around 1:20 in the morning,

dropped off at the hospital in oakland. the primary focus for homicide investigators meantime is to catch whoever was behind this double shooting. police looking for the gunman for yesterday's shooting. one person critically shot near university. we do not know the condition of the victim this morning. we do know police issued a shelter in place for that gunman and lifted it hours later at night and know that did not happen in this neighborhood the search continues again for both gunmen with no arrests made in either shooting. stephanie chuang, today in the bay. thank you. new this morning in about 90 minutes, president obama will facebo officially announce his supreme court nominee and said it's his duty to replace for the late justice antonin scalia. >> it will happen in the rose garden at 8:00 a.m. >> we don't know who it is but

have a short list and e-mail preview from the president this morning saying he's looking for someone or was looking for someone independent minded with credenti credentials, a master of the law, someone who believes in a limited role of the court. that could appeal to republicans who say that the president has appointed activist justices and also someone who understands these decisions are not just theory, they have an impact on real life. the president will have to convince congress to try to at least hold a hearing. republicans here have vowed they will not do that. he needs 14 republicans just to move forward on this. who's on the short list? a couple judges on the d.c. court of appeals including the chief and one from california, paul watford, who was confirmed previously with the support of nine republicans. watford is on the california court of appeals, from the bay area. he does have something against him. the chair of the senate

judiciary committee, chuck grassley, has spoken against him in the past. born and raised in california and could certainly be on that short list. we're waiting in about an hour and a half to find out exactly who the president will name and also this morning, as we hear from the senate, whether or not they'll even give this person a hearing and whether or not it will come up for an up or down vote. >> they may not. thank you. decision 2016, donald trump halfway towards that nomination and hillary clinton pulling away from bernie sanders. >> a clean sweep for clinton last night while the republican field now down to three after trump won in florida. >> right. it might seem things are getting easier for donald trump. we have exit polls that show it's not over yet for nontrump loving republicans. the field down to three after marco rubio dropped out after losing his home state of florida. con kasich won ohio and promises

he was a parolee and dugard sued saying the federal government should have revoked his parole prior to her kidnapping. more details what finally led up to the kidnapping and a basketball coach and the university released a report showing the coach sent the woman text messages filled with sexual in due endo. according to the report he tr k tricked her going to his place where he propositioned for sex. he said he was being playful and not sexually harassing her. a san francisco nightclub closing its doors to the public after a popular d.j. was stabbed outside the court. it happened in the tenderloin neighborhood. the victim, a 29-year-old also an analyst for apple, no one charged with his death. the "san francisco chronicle" reporting the nightclub surrendered its liquor license and entertainment permit but the

club is still open for private events. crews are still in the process of restoring pe ining p service it happened days after a sinkhole suddenly opened up after heavy rain. about 2500 customers lost gas service, crews fanned out across the area to restore that service and they had to go door-to-door and turn on each home's gaslight individu individually. the only ones still without gas are residents that have not been home. >> you feel bad for the residents. it's been cold. how do you start your day without that? >> temperatures warm up as we go through the day. it is cool to start but a much better afternoon, evening warmer than yesterday. 44 degrees in san jose and san francisco and 49 degrees in oakland. looking at highs today, 72 degrees in gilroy.

colonel red and they ran the confederate flag up and down the football field and i remember seeing the flag on letterman jackets and i thought, wow, this is 1994, why am i seeing it? a passionate conversation to be had. school board officials say they will take their time picking the next mascot and the community will be involved in that process. it is 6:44, a palo alto neighborhood is on edge after a 13-year-old girl is flashed by a stranger. officers say he exposed himself monday night in the professorville neighborhood. police admit they heard several reports of people being approached on the streets. people say the area is safe. >> kids walk the dog by themselves and we feel pretty comfortable. one time i fell off my bicycle and someone driving by on the other side of this road pulled over and helped me. i feel like it's this kind of

neighborhood. >> police are asking neighbors to give a call if they see anything suspicious. they say crime doesn't pay but it does pay to fight crime. four people will share a 150, 0 $150,000 reward for the capture of two prison escapees. remember this story? a san francisco homeless man will get the bulk of that reward money, 100,000 dollars to be specific. he recognized these two inmates and followed them into an mcdonald's in san francisco, back in january. the 55-year-old flagged down police officers when he noticed them. the three convicted felons escaped from a santa ana prison and fled from the bay area. one inmate drove back to orange county where he turned himself in. avoiding the stink is the hardest trick for skate others to pull off at a san francisco skate park. it draws the crowds and they need a bathroom break after a few hours. there isn't a restroom at the skate. they say they can smell now where the most popular pit stops

see the clouds in the su subtropical moisture in the pacific and moving to seattle and portland now and that is where it will stay. no changes here. we will also see the temperatures warming up each day. in livermore, we start out in the mid 40s, up to 60 degrees 11:00, noon, beautiful weather to take the lunch outside. 64 degrees as you ride home. windows down and sunglasses on. 65 degrees at 9:00. in the south bay, mid-70s and in the lower 60s and 70s in the peninsula. in san francisco, up to 69 degrees tomorrow, a few more clouds in the mix on friday and that will help our temperatures stay down a couple degrees. we will have a change in the pattern as we go to the weekend. for now, we have this area of high pressure blocking that rain and keeping it well to the north. as we go to the next several day, clear and mild weather this

6:55. welcome back. one last check of today's top stories before we send you to the "today" show. a double shooting out of berkeley. >> good morning. we just got an update just now from berkeley police who say this double shooting does appear to be a targeted one. there was a man and woman appeared to have been inside a car parked at tremont blocks from the arby b.a.r.t. station just after one this morning when nearly a dozen evidence markers show police found many bullet casings, a man shot several times ended up on someone's porch asking for help and a

woman around 1:20 in the morning dropped off at the hospital. both suffered serious injuries and fighting for their lives. they're trying to determine who's behind this double sho shooting as well as the motive. this is the second shooting in less than 24 hours. the sergeant calling this very uncharacteristic for there to be two shootings in such a short period of time and trying to find out who was behind this one as well as yesterday morning on the northside of town. stephanie chuang. live here in morgan hill, four years ago today, 15-year-old sierra lamar left to catch the school bus at this intersection behind me a couple blocks behind me. and they launched a search to try to find her remains. the santa clara sheriff's office believes lamar was abducted and
