winds at times. may even have some sunshine peeking out and more sunshine as we go through the week and show you that coming up in the next microclimate forecast. >> we're looking at rafael and smooth drive and more traffic and glow to the lights north of san rafael kari is talking about and sprinkles and damp roads around the bay and the map shows you no real problem for the map we show you. the bay bridge toll plaza and there is the backup there and typical build for your upper east shore and folks pass by chicago highway and that's the end of the line for the bay point line and right now pete is following that story. and tri-valley, there's hayward and northbound 87. we had traffic backed up and then extended up towards 280. looked like something was going on. chp doesn't have anything in their reports right now and announcing the backup from capital expressway to kirtner. and chp doesn't have anything really in their grid and look at the pattern there and that's typically what we see when that

type of activity is going on. that's the only real slow spot for the south bay. we'll send it back to you. >> figure out what's going on there a historic day, president obama in cuba is going to meet with cuba's president raul castro later today. those two leaders have a lot to talk about. the white house says the president will be "candid" about their areas of disagreement including human rights practices. the bay area cuban community is watching the president's visit very closely. >> i thought it was very exciting and i think it symbolizes hope. now, i know within the cuban american community it is a bit controversial, but i try and keep politics aside and i want to take it as a sign of hope for change. >> and there will be an official state welcome today for president obama. coming up at 6:30, "today in the bay" jay gray will join us live from havana with more on the president's agenda, as well as how this visit impacts the relationship between these two

countries. in southern california tomorrow a showdown between apple and the fbi. a judge will hear arguments from both sides. the question, should apple be forced to unlock the iphone 5c belonging to syed farook. apple's chief encryption expert will testify. we are not expecting a ruling, however, tomorrow. but, first, in just a few hours here in the bay area, apple ceo tim cook will unveil the latest line of gadgets. >> stephanie chuang joining us from apple headquarters and hoping a little phone ends up being a big win for the company. >> that's right, sam and laura. apple hasn't released any official details but industry insiders believe the little phone is the iphone se. think 5s that was introduced in 2013 and the se is expected to replace the 5s as the so-called entry level iphone. take a look this morning.

apple's online store went down so to speak because tim cook said it is greeting customers with this message. we can't wait to show you what we have in store. analysts say downsizing the screen size will appeal to the estimated one-third of customers who didn't upgrade to the larger screens. regardless of what is unveiled today and he said tech giant is still thinking big. >> apple is such a huge company that they have to deal with very large markets and cars is a very large market and i hope it's something we don't even think of right now will come out of apple. >> now, industry insiders say the other big announcements expected are new bands and accessories for the apple watch and no new actual hardware and an updated 9.7 inch ipad and nothing about desktops so far. a set up for a september announcement an iphone 7. the event here this morning that

cupertino headquarters starts at 10:00 this morning. we will have coverage at mid-day at 11:00 and later versions of our show. live here in cupertino, stephanie chuang "today in the bay." nbc bay area is inside of today's announcement. live updates starting in our 11:00 a.m. newscast. at 6:04. happening today the trial continues for the former stanford swimmer accused of rape. brock turner was arrested in january of last year. the swimmer is charged with three counts of assaulting a uc santa barbara graduate. trying to assault the victim while she was unconscious. one of those witnesses also chased turner down after he tried to run away. turner withdrew from stanford after his arrest. new fall out, more fall out for cal basketball. a prized recruit now abandoning his plans to play for the skrool. florida prep star tyson jolly tweeted out over the weekend, "given the uncertainty at cal i

decided to ask out of my letter of intent reopen my recruitment. this was not an easy decision, but the right one." jolly signed with cal last year and then decided to play one year at prep school. last week cal fired its assistant basketball coach yann hufnagel. he denies those accusations. cal is in the process of conducting an internal investigation. as for the tournament, hawaii set the bears friday in the first round. it is 6:05. today could be a key day in the sierra lamar murder trial. the suspect attorneys are asking for more dna evidence and that could delay the trial again for months. 12 dna profiles found on lamar's pants. one of those profiles was of the suspect garcia torres and requesting the profiles of the 11 other people. if the defense gets its way, the trial may not start next month as scheduled. sierra lamar disappeared four

years ago. but her family, like they do often, spent the weekend in morgan hill looking for her. police stepping up their patrols in downtown palo alto after a strong armed robbery. happened in the early morning hours yesterday. the two men robbed and aed a man in his 20s tag team style. one of them punched a victim while the other one stole his phone. >> he began screaming for help at which point the suspect grabbed him in a head lock to keep him to prevent him from yelling for help. and he continued asking for help. >> did not suffer any serious injuries and police say it's possible that a gray toyota camry near the scene of the crime could be connected but officers never located the suspect. tihe troubles continue for b.a.r.t. this morning as riders

are facing another day of delays. >> pete suratos join us live from concord. this all stemming from the same electrical issue, but they have not been able to diagnose or pinpoint the exact cause. >> yeah, you know they ran some test trains between pittsburg north bay point and the pinpoint like you mentioned, but just moments ago you had the bus bridge coming from pittsburg bay point and they are starting to line-up there to get their b.a.r.t. tickets and all started wednesday morning. a power surge along the tracks in this area and damaging 50 trains. we saw similar situation two weeks ago damaging 80 trains going through the transbay tube and, of course, this has been a headache for commuters. we talked to some who had to use this bus bridge for the past several days. >> been card of hard trying to get going. but i have to get up a lot earlier and, yeah, it's really

hard. >> now, it will take months repair the damaged trains but service between the two contra costa stations will resume before then but b.a.r.t. riders should anticipate crowded trains as these trains continue. pete suratos for "today in the bay." turning now to the microclimate forecast this monday morning. a live look outside the golden gate bridge. traffic picking up just a tad out there and we'll pick up with mike in just a moment. >> the phrase break out your umbrella. we'll say it to you today but the last time for a while, kari. >> looks like the rest of the week stays dry, sam and laura. as you head out this morning, still puddles on the road from the rain we had yesterday and half an inch of rain fell in parts of the north bay. s now, as you look at the current temperatures. 50s all across the bay area and light, patchy fog in some spots and highs reaching into the low to mid-60s and a chance of rain

at any point. keep that umbrella close by in san francisco and the embarcadero up to 61 degrees and 61 in san rafael and concord and today in pleasanton 65 degrees. i'll show you what to expect as this rain moves out and temperatures warm up. let's get an update on the morning commute. let's check in with mike. the san mateo bridge looking good? >> it is looking good. want to give you the update for the south bay, also, which isn't looking great better news north 87. we keep calling them, but, sorry, we have to get the latest to say whatever is on the roadway out of their reports north 87 slow and then easing up towards 280. a tougher stretch right now and hopefully get some recovery because 101 shows that morning relief right there for the 6:00 hour. so far build up towards 630. typical build and 880 towards union city and, indeed, as we look towards the rest of the bay. the bay bridge toll plaza has your metering lights on and no major surprises and that san mateo bridge.

crasd satd i new details right now on the passenger plane that crashed saturday in southern russia killing all 62 people onboard. this morning investigators announced that the black boxes are so badly damaged it could not immediately read any data. the boeing 737 had been circling the airport for about two hours when it crashed while attempting to land for a second time during severe weather.

you see it and hear it. police in hot pursuit of a stolen cement truck. behind the wheel, an 11-year-old boy. happened in southern minnesota not far from rochester and the cell phone video say the boy was laughing and smiling as he drove the struck through the streets. he stole the truck from a local contractor. luckily no one was hurt. the boy eventually taken to juvenile hall. >> quite a story to tell. 6:14 right now. this is praty ambitious plan by stanford. want to build new houses for thousands of students. >> kris sanchez live at stanford and along with helping out students they hope this will create more inventory and lower high-rent prices across the peninsula. >> right. so the thought is by bringing 2,400 graduates back on to campus that would free up housing off campus.

but that's only about half of the graduate students that live off campus right now. so, what does mean for you if you're not a stanford graduate student. supporters of the plan say that moving more students back on to campus will free up but opponents of the plan say that the families already living at us k escondido village could be replaced as early as this summer. adding more is adding more traffic and noise and we did talk to a real estate consultant that says moving students back here could help to free up housing in the price range bracket and only if the housing is finished all at the same time. >> which can create a ripple effect throughout the peninsula and the county. if housing opens up and there may be no impact. >> santa clara county already approved the permit back in december. so, tonight, stanford planners are making their case to the

city of palo alto and no power to approve or deny the project, but they do have a pretty influential opinion to offer to the county. can make suggestions to the county going forward. that meeting is at 6:00 tonight at the palo alto city chambers. >> thank you very much, kris. time for your monday morning riddle. two zebra on the streets. >> they were out on friday. here is a photo of the pair, you might say, on the lamb after escaping from a traveling circus set up near 0.co coliseum. circus workers managed to wrangle the workers pretty quickly and bring them back to the circus. >> send in the clowns. but the idea growing on the zebra plan and a similar thing happened last november to the same circus company when they were visiting philadelphia. that's when two zebras from the universal circus escaped for more than half an hour.

the same two behind the jail break, but might want to reconsider their procedures for holding the animals. >> when the circus is on the outside and not on the inside, you have a real problem for everybody involved. pretty calm start here and little bit of rain on your monday. >> rainy day and mondays get you down, no worry. >> we will have sun for the rest of the week, actually. after today, you'll need the umbrella as you have rain falling at times and by tomorrow we'll see all of this clearing out. we had rain over the weekend and most spots had anywhere from about 0.5 in the north bay to 0.1 in san francisco and then we pretty didn't have anything in san jose. so, still some of those scattered showers out there in palo alto as we go hour by hour. we will still have some of that rain moving through and temperatures in the lower 60s. 63 degrees at 1:00 this afternoon. and then as we go into later on today, still a chance of rain. and we'll be in the low 60s. some breezy winds. those winds rushing in onshore as that area of low pressure

stays well to the north of ous draping that cold front all across the coast. now, into the day, we will still have those winds up to about 25 to 30 miles an hour. and some scattered showers moving in and the rain will be very hit or miss and maybe a little bit heavy at times. but most of the rain we'll see today will be light and may even lingner to the start of the morning tomorrow, especially in the north bay before it all clears out and the rest of the afternoon will be clear. rainfall totals during this time period look to be about 0.25 and we already, once again, had some pretty good amounts in the north bay. another soaker on top of that and the wind moving in onshore up to 30 miles per hour during the middle of the afternoon as we get some of those showers coming down. over the next three days, a chance of rain in the south bay and tomorrow we'll have a high of 63 degrees. 6 degrees on wednesday and the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen how the temperatures will be warming up the rest of the week in san francisco. and low 60s there on wednesday

and to 66 degrees. in the north bay, we'll be up to 60 today, and then 70 on wednesday and the east bay will have temperatures in the low to mid-60s. heading into this weekend, we will have some beautiful weather. you can make plans to get outside and nothing but sunshine. and into the low 70s. even some mid-70s in the south. up to 76 degrees on sunday. also looks very nice. but a toucher in some spots and 68 degrees in the peninsula. i'll have another look at the forecast coming up. let's see what's happening as you head out for that morning commute and what is happening in the south bay, mike. >> we'll look at this camera 101 through san jose and more traffic flowing through and more dramatic than just this. look at your map. we have that fall out from highway 87 the earlier crash right around curtner and now only slow from capital and a good slow down there. capital expressway. sometimes folks choose between 87 and 101. you see this slow down. some more folks might have hit

you' need stro stomh for the biggest buzz in l.a. right now the latest tourist attraction. >> you might need a strong stomach for this one. maybe dramamine. top of the u.s. bank tower. al will be able to slide down in that tube from the 70th floor to the 69th floor. a helicopter hoisted the tube to the top of the tower over the weekend. the sky slide will open in june. that tower is the tallest building west of the mississippi river, but not for long.

the force tower under construction in sf will take that title once itsker complete. >> you only get one floor. transactions that you're passing along from floor to the other. >> i don't want to be the first person there. to decision 2016. politics is risky. today chelsea clinton in the bay area to help raise money for her's presidential campaign. one of the main hosts will be the founder of theanos, she is under intense scrutiny after a wall street journal investigation acknowledged its blood testing technology is not as accurate as it claims. the fund-raiser was originally going to be held at the company's headquarters. some more politics now and there was supposed to be a republican debate tonight. that is not going to happen now. both front-runner donald trump and john kasich dropped out only leaving ted cruz. fox canceled.

"today in the bay" tracie potts live in washington and this all comes ahead of another set of primaries tomorrow. >> exactly. we've got arizona where donald trump is leading the republicans. utah where ted cruz is leading and for the democrats a caucus in idaho that bernie sanders hopes along with the others will help him catch up. >> the poll has us ahead in utah by 11 points. >> bernie sanders is in utah today ahead of tomorrow's primary while all the other candidates speak at apec. while here, donald trump is reportedly meeting privately with nearly two dozen top republicans calling for party unity after another weekend of violence at one of his rallies. >> let me tell you, nobody has been hurt. you know, they make it sound so big. >> trump remains the frontrunner utah and arizona primaries

get your monday started off the right way. good morning, thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. kind of wet start to our monday. >> wet start to the monday. you see the puddles on the roadways as you head out and breezy, too, as you head out with the high humidity. not a good hair day and we're looking at some of the light showers moving through parts of the far north bay and most of us seeing clear skies and also patchy fog, as well. temperatures in the low 50s as you get the day started. we're in the low 60s today. up to 61 degrees in san francisco and the south bay. see some rain dropping throughout any point in the afternoon. i'll detail that at any point. >> because of the crash that happened earlier we see the speeds improving for guadeloupe parkway and over here off capital expressway some slowing.

am some folks may have taken that as an alternate route. also south of here. this is an issue coming over the sant cruz mountains and our friend henry let us know there was a crash over the mountains and he'll let us know what is going on there. one lane blocked it looks like from pattern here and jammed up from over the hill into our side from los gatos and a live look at the toll plaza and slowing here for the metering lights and looks more slowing for the upper east shore. back to you. happening now, a historic visit in cuba just in a matter of hours. president obama will meet one-o one-on-one with raul castro. a sitting president has visit in nearly 90 years. >> jay gray live in havana with more on what this visit means for the two countries. jay, the president said he wants to speak to the people, leaders and dissidents. >> yeah. he's going to do all that, sam,

laura. good to talk to you this morning. it all starts with that bilateral meeting between president obama and russian president raule castro. the white house has been very mrunt. during this meeting they'll bring up concerns. that is their word they have with cube policy and including human rights issues here which has always been at the forefront of problems or at least discussions between the two countries. that discussion expected to last for several hours. they will brief the press after that meeting and a state dinner where presumably the two leaders will talk and then tomorrow president obama makes that historic address to the cubans on cuban national television. that will happen. he will also meet with some of the dissidents here. some of those who are disappointed, frankly, that he is here and lending credence, they say, to the castro regime here. he'll meet with them and that is

years ago and her body still has not been found. her family spent the weekend in morgan hill looking for her. two burglars in the east bay busted all thanks to an alert and a canine officer. this is the dog perched in front of the stolen property found inside that white sedan which also turned out to be stolen. police say neighbors spotted a man and woman in concord yesterday morning stealing several items from cars and porches. police eventually tracked the two suspects down, but one got away. but that's when the canine officer came in and found him nearby. >> helping out with that arrest there. happening today, all eyes apple. in just under four hours now the company will unveil its line of we already have but better. >> stefchuang helping us in cupertino. hoping a little phone is a big win for users. >> bucking the trend of the larger screen. this is the 6s.

the industry insiders say that apple is looking at something closer to the 5s which was introduced in 2013 calling it the s.e. cheaper, four inches and same sort of body as the 5s replacing it as the entry level phone but keeping the guts of the 6s. take a look at the screen. we have a screen grab of this morning what the apple online store has been running. it reads, we can't wait to show you what we have in store. analysts believe the smaller screen and lower price tag is a muf to attract more buyers around the globe, including china which is a huge consoumer of smartphone. analysts say the se will also fight phone fatigue and appeal to the estimated one-third of customers who did not upgrade to those larger screens. >> so people who don't really care to have these larger screen iphones but maybe they don't want to be left behind from everything that is new right now, like apple pay. >> other expectations for this

morning's apple event announced by tim cook and bands for the apple watch. no actual new hardware apple will announce an updated ipad at 9.7 inches hoping to reinigivate the sales that have been declining. that event set to start at 10:00 this morning. scott budman inside and also have the latest for you on our mid-day show at 11:00 this morning. live in cupertino, stephanie chuang. activity in cupertino and also in d.c. shaping up to be a very busy week for apple. the company's fight continuing with the department of justice. apple expected to be in court tomorrow. want to unlock an iphone belonging to one of the san bernardino terror suspect. trouble continuing for b.a.r.t. this morning as riders are facing another day of delay. >> this all stems from an electrical issue but investigators have not been able to pinpoint that exact cause yet.

>> yeah, guys. it's hard to believe it's day six of this bus bridge dropping off folks from bay point and dropped off a ton of passengers and still trying to pinpoint this cause as far as b.a.r.t. goes. ran test trains but still can't pinpoint the root of this problem. but on wednesday morning they are saying a power surge along the tracks damaging 50 trains. for commuters we talked to this morning, they had to adjust to this. some that didn't want to take the bus decided to drive here directly to the north concord bus station. >> i diddant want to be late and i have my brother with me and he has to be at work before me. so, i needed to get him here so he could get on time. >> it's going to take months to repair these damaged trains, but b.a.r.t. says is hoping to get service between the two contra costa stations before these repairs are completely fix.

b.a.r.t. riders should anticipate crowded trains as these delays continue. pete suratos for "today in the bay". >> b.a.r.t. riders feeling like they're left out in the cold. maybe bring an umbrella out as you bundle up. taking a peek outside overlooking downtown san jose. at least kind of freshen things up if we can find the silver lining. >> wiping its way through here and we saw kari checking out her radar a second ago. mostly in the north bay. >> mostly in the north bay and see the rest of the bay area getting some light rain as we go into later on this morning and later afternoon. now as you head out, we still have puddles on the roadways and temperatures in the low to mid-50s. san francisco now at 56 degrees and heading up to 61 there. also 61 at half moon bay and san jose little bit of a peek of sunshine or two throughout the afternoon into the mid-60s and also 65 degrees today in pleasanton. oakland is looking at 62 degrees. so, some off and on rain at any

point today just keep that umbrella close by and be prepared and then the rest of the week is looking mostly sunny astures warm up. i'll have details on that and what else to expect in the microclimate forecast coming up in less than tens minutes. let's see what's happening in the north bay now with mike? >> traffic filling in the lanes and sheen on the roads from overnight rains and more rains north of here. petaluma at least some drizzle up there. nothing unpredictable for san rafael there. the commute direction also the upper east shore freeway had slowing into richmond and last few minutes have seen some recovery. whatever is going on there, looks like it is cleared to the shoulder and build for the walnut creek interchange. over to the north concord station where that is the latest of the line goes as far as the regular scheduled service. over here looking towards the build for the tri-vally and the hayward build westbound, of course, is your commute. in the south bay, the northbound

someone's life. 6:45. you might call it a financial football and now being kicked back and forth between the niners and the city of santa clara. the dispute centering around money amounting to millions of dollars. the city says the niners are supposed to pay nearly $25 million in rent every year to play at levi's. the niners say that figure should be adjted closer to $20 million citing a clause in their lease. santa clara says that the team is now holding rent payment hostage. >> to my knowledge, the payments stopped coming in for the rent at the end of december and there have not been any payments received for january, february or march. >> a team spokesperson denies all of it. he says, "the most recent facility rent payment made by the 49ers was on march 16th." the full 25 million will be paid by the end of the fiscal year. whatever the case, the team is still pursuing what it calls a rent reset tagged to revenue

times of rain. temperatures right at about 60 degrees. wind will be picking up, too. not only cool and wet and we'll have some winds. at times rolling on shore at 25 to close to 30 miles an hour today. and then later on this evening, the wind start to calm down, but will still be breezy and cool as this low pressure system just off shore brings in that cold front that is draped right along the coast. so, cooler temperatures today. still a chance of showers. here we are at noon. we see the scattered showers moving through also in parts of the south bay we didn't get much rain yesterday. and then into this evening. we start to see the rain tapering off, but there still will be a chance of rain at least for the north bay for the first part of early tomorrow and then the rest of the bay area clears out. during this time frame, we're looking at about 0.25 of rain for most of us and not expecting a lot of rain, but just enough to wash some of that pollen out of the air before a dry rest of the week. temperatures will be in the low to mid-60s today. in the south bay, you see that
