a neighborhood on edge following a brutal attack in a san francisco neighborhood. we hear from one of the victims as the hunt to find the suspect continues. new legal trouble for alameda county sheriff office over the videotape beating of a car thief suspect. i'm bob redell. breaking overnight, a plane hijacking finally over with the suspect arrested. it happened in the last 20 or 30 minutes. we are tracking developments overseas. >> the bright reds definitely appropriate and as we look at the forecast and what to expect. a cool morning and not as windy as yesterday and a little bit warmer. we keep the sunshine. by lunchtime 60 degrees in the south bay and the peninsula. heading home today 64 degrees and the tri-valley and the peninsula and the south bay. i'll have a look at the rest of the microclimate forecast and a slight warm up for the rest of the week. let's head to the north bay now. >> yes, good morning. we have the same color palette, too. i'm sure you have a sweater on, too, ms. kari hall or a shawl. i like that you wear those. this is 101 in san rafael and you can see northbound and southbound moving without any concerns. want to switch over to the maps and lots of greens in this location, as well. same for fairfield and an accident on state route 12 headed on the westbound direction. but really not affecting traffic here across the bay. across the rest of the east bay looking good. same deal if you're headed down towards the bay bridge approach, no concerns there. same for the tri-valley and the

south bay. wide-open lanes here on the tuesday. fingers crossed. back to you. right now breaking news and the world watching very closely this morning. an egyptair plane that was hijacked overnight with americans onboard. well, moments ago a suspect who claimed to have an explosive belt released at least seven people being held hostage and was ultimately taken into custody. >> tracie potts is live in washington with the latest developments. tracie, this comes after hours of negotiations and, of course, no one knew how it was going to end. >> exactly. this started more than six hours ago with a man who hijacked a plane and said he had an explosive belt and he wanted to go to either turkey or cypress. take a look at the live pictures. that plane still on the tarmac after the hijacker identified by the cypress foreign ministry as seif eldin mustafa and from the

tarmac. we have video of the last few people who got off that plane. the first passengers, lots of them, were allowed off the plane as soon as they landed. when that flight was diverted from cairo this morning. but then seven or eight people remained on the plane as authorities negotiated with him throughout the morning. just now, we're getting information from officials that they believe he was unstable. he was asking for his ex or estranged wife who they believe lived in the area. they don't think this was a terrorist act and that for the last few hours he was trying to negotiate asylum as they used that to try to get people safely off that plane. the situation is over and the hijacker now identified is in custody. and everyone including what we were told eight americans now safe after that harrowing ordeal this morning that started just over six hours ago. >> all right, now, all those questions will swirl whether or

not he had an explosive belt and how he did manage to hijack the plane and all of that. work with nbc news on that story all morning long and until there is an update we will post updates online. nbcbayarea.com. new details now on a dangerous cliff rescue in marin county overnight. search and rescue crews helping out a group of hikers. it happened off point reyes sea shore about 11:00 last night. those hikers got stuck in a remote area that is hard to access. plus the cold and the wind only amped up the dangerous conditions. the rescue took several hours but the hikers were eventually taken to safety about 1:00 in the morning. happening later today, more fallout from a violent video that has now gone viral. the man in this video beaten by alameda county sheriff deputies and this as we learn new disturbing details about that beating. >> bob redell is live at the

alameda county sheriff's office. now we know another deputy, a third one might be involved. >> correct, kris and sam. good morning to you. the alameda county sheriff office has placed this third deputy on leave for possibly trying to bribe witnesses not to report that beating that as it turns out was captured on camera. this video from november shows two alameda county sheriff deputies chasing 29-year-old a car thief suspect. chasing him into a san francisco alleyway and then repeatedly beating him. now investigating allegations that the third deputy i mentioned stole a necklace and used it allegedly to pay off witnesses to not report what happened. the necklace is seen in photographs in the alley but it has since disappeared. >> and we get a little ticked off when things like this happen because it tarnished my badge and tarnishes everybody's badge

and we don't like it. >> after months of saying no deputies activated their body cameras the sheriff says now one may have accidentally done so. he allegedly stole a car here in alameda county and ran two squad cars and led on a high-pede chase before being tracked down in that mission district alleyway. his attorney is expected to announce a civil lawsuit against the two deputies who allegedly beat his client. ahern will address the media later this afternoon at a news conference. bob redell, "today in the bay." 5:06 now. san francisco police are stepping up a parole in one of their neighborhood after a violent attack on a couple. they were attacked about a month ago. there is a sketch of the suspect. here it is. ayers said that man threatened to rape his wife and then

started punching both of them. >> and then i watched him hit my wife in the face and i remember her hitting the ground and the back of her head slam against the concrete. >> that man's wife mary ayers suffered a traumatic brain injury. he suffered a broken leg. police are still searching for that suspect, but they also held this community safety meeting last night. as for the couple, they have months of recovery ahead for their friend set up a go fund me account called help for dean and mary. >> hope they get all the money they need. also happening today, the rape case against a former stanford swimmer now goes to the jury. closing arguments are expected to wrap up today in brock turner's trial. turner accused of raping a woman on campus in january. witnesses claim they saw turner on top of an unconscious woman at a fraternity party. san francisco police are giving the green light to a device that helps ensure dui

offenders don't get behind the wheel drunk, again. the ignition interlock device is a breathalyzer that keep the car's engine from starting up after it detects alcohol. that device is being used in a pilot program. but a new state measure would make it mandatory for all dui offenders for them to buy the device and then use it for at least six months. yesterday san francisco police joined mothers against drunk driving to show their support for that legislation. happening later today, crab lovers can almost taste it. a deal that may be hammered out to bring long overdue dungeness crabs into stores. a price per pound had not been set for buyers. the results of quality tests will come in and then fishermen and buyers will sit down in a closed door meeting to hammer out a deal. they're hoping to have crab for sale at bay area docks by friday. >> you know somebody is sitting

there with their cracker and the picks just waiting. >> who gets to decide that? what kind of coat do i need to wear today? kari hall with a look at your forecast. >> yes, a warm one, indeed, sam. we have another morning starting out in the 30s in the north bay. and some low 40s else where. all clear skies, no worries about fog as you head out the door. we're at 41 degrees in the peninsula and 37 degrees in the north bay with highs today in the mid-60s, a touch warmer than yesterday. still breezy, but not as windy as yesterday and 65 degrees today in the east bay. our temperatures continue to warm the rest of this week, even into the weekend. i'll show you that coming up in a few minutes. and anthony, is it slowing down at the bay bridge yet? >> not yet. i want to show you the shot. the actual bay bridge camera is out. this is our emoryville camera turned over. even moved the camera over to

". google wants to remove more than 100 redwood trees, but not everyone so happy about that in order to make way for new google offices. the city is hearing some public comment tonight. we'll have all the details when

5:13 right now. making room for google's new campus and today the mountain view city council will talk about whether the company can take out dozens of redwood trees to make room. there is growing backlash by some community members already. steph chuang joining us from

mountain view with both sides of the controversy. where do things stand right now? >> first of all we stumbled upon this. you can't find anything more symbolic. google trying to get rid of some of these trees. this is part of our neighborhood now and they want the trees to stay. what we're talking about here is about 160 redwood tree that google is trying to get removed to make room for its future offices. 100 of those trees are considered heritage trees because of their age and their size. submitted plans to the city detailing this new campus here on east charleston road because you need a city permit to remove these trees. google says it will replant trees that are native to the area and require less water than redwoods. three experts we spoke with said for many dry years these redwoods are in bad shape anyway. >> these tree branches are extremely brittle. >> and now google is not the

only one trying to remove trees for development in the area. nbc bay area put together a list of the five projects with the most removal with microsoft into it and elcumean hospital are also trying to remove heritage trees here. about 200 more. for the google plan the city council is set to hear this at 7:00 tonight. this is a chance for people who are dissatisfied or supported to go in and voice their perspective. >> we'll have to wait and see what happens tonight. >> yes, we will. interesting conversation. the fbi has dropped its demands that apple oep an phone belonging to one of the san bernardino terrorist or unlock it, at least. >> the fbi said it was able to get a third party to open the phone for them. instead scott mcgrew, said could happen the entire time. >> the fbi insisted all along that apple was the only company that could do it. in fact, the director of the fbi made those comment s directly t

congress. only apple, he said, has the technology to open the iphone 5c used by the san bernardin shoot er only what he said was not true. a number of things that claim to be less than truthful. he said it was the only phone that they were interested in opening, but later federal prosecutors said they had dozens. now, the sudden reversal in this case raises a number of questions this morning. one, did the fbi really open the phone? it would be more accurate to say the fbi says it did. two, why did it tell congress it couldn't if at the same time it was working with third party companies. and, third, did the fbi miss a major opportunity here? did it give up its very best chance? it could have taken apple through the court system. using this rock solid terror

kind of plane, the same model has been looking for more west coast routes. now, the first question a lot people in san francisco are going to ask, sam and kris, is what happens to my frequent flier mileage. it will take some time before all of this gets put together, if it happens at all. but, yes, eventually, you'll have to spend that before all this happens. >> if you ever needed a reason to take a trip, how about now. >> scott mcgrew, thank you very much. happening today, san francisco presses play on a new partnership to help tackle homelessness. the city right now teaming up with the sound company dolby laboratories to launch the downtown streets team program. the goal is to get homeless people involved in work experience through beautifying the streets around civic center plaza. dolby labs is now based in burba burbank, but one-time founder ray dolby lived in san francisco. a train derugged in rugged niles canyon are going to be honored for their efforts. >> you might remember earlier

this month when a mudslide forced the ace commuter train off the traction during the middle of heavy rain. one car ended up submerged in the water and amazingly nobody died in that accident. passengers then had to trudge some 2 miles to the waiting area and, today, alameda county supervisors will recognize the efforts of emergency workers who risk their own lives to get passengers out of the water and back to safety. >> just remember, we covered that, i believe, live from the scene. it was hard to watch from any perspective and see people survive without issue something that traumatic. >> very scary. >> let's check in with meteorologist kari hall and look at the forecast that maybe has you putting on an extra layer this morning. >> look at these temperatures, kris and sam. 39 degrees in santa rosa and 37 degrees in napa. low 40s else where. san francisco now wakes up to 48 degrees. as we take it hour by hour in oakland. we'll be at 47 degrees at 7:00 and then warming up nicely through the lunchtime hours.

61 degrees by noon. and into the low 60s today. it will be a touch warmer than yesterday. and it feels nicer, too, because it won't be as windy. highs today still in the low to mid-60s. but, once again, a couple degrees warmer and that will be the trend over the next few days. looking at what we're expecting as far as rain this week. shows pretty much nuthing for the next several days. a few more clouds moving in on sunday and then by monday we'll have a chance of some scattered showers moving in. and also those temperatures dropping back down. rainfall totals at this point don't look that significant. some spots maybe 0.1 over the next seven days. and our trend, once again, going upward. here's a look at dublin and the average high is 65 degrees. we'll be above average starting tomorrow and into saturday. we're up to 72 degrees with those clouds mixing in on sunday it will come back down a couple degrees. a look at all the microclimates and the weekend forecast. very pleasant weather with highs generally in the low 70s.

cae ree rublic present decision 2016 and the three republican presidential candidates still standing will face off in a town hall in wisconsin later this evening. >> making the state's primary next tuesday crucial. tonight's town hall meeting is in milwaukee. donald trump, ted cruz are neck and neck in the polls there. john kasich is trailing. voters will get a chance to ask candidates questions directly tonight. >> kind of an interesting development, kris. a big announcement from senator marco rubio he is taking himself off of june's ballot. not entirely unexpected since rubio pulled out of the presidential race earlier this month after he lost his home state of florida. the florida republican has not issued a statement but analysts say it's likely that he was not siphoning votes away from ted cruz or john kasich. many in the republican base are trying to prevent donald trump from winning any more delegates

or enough to guarantee he would need theination. a private ferry service trying to go public and hopefully make the cufor bay area employees a lot easier. the ferry would run between redwood city, san francisco, emoryville and berkeley. that private service called prop sf has been running for about six months, similar to google bus. tech companies pay for employees to get back and forth to work. if approved by the state, the public could use those ferries during peak commute hours. >> to work on a ferry and get to my office which is right on the water in redwood city, that would make my life ten times easier it is right now. >> the decision is expected in the next few months. the company hopes to have that service up and running some time this summer. coming up, breaking news that we have been following overnight. a plane hijacked with americans board. the overnight negotiations, which helped everyone make it out safely. a new allegation against alameda county sheriff office

that are turned right on time. nuthing to be alarmed about. just want to show you that. let's swip over let's switch over to the maps and same for the altamont pass and dublin no concerns to the south bay and even through the peninsula right now. wide-open lanes, guys. back over to you. >> anthony, thank you very much. breaking news to bring to you following developments in egypt this morning. the good news, a passenger jet hijacking situation that lasted for about six hours is now over. the hijacker is arrested. that is a look at the plane that was diverted to cypress. again, that drama started about 11:00 p.m. our time about six hours ago. six and a half hours ago. finally ended an hour ago. newio into the newsroom. you can see the final passengers deboarding that plane. the hijacker did let most of the people onboard the plane off hours ago except for four passengers and three crew members. we do know that some americans

were also on that flight scheduled to go originally from alaxenedria, egypt to cairo. it was flying that route when the hijacker forced it to land in cypress. a press conference is being held right now and a cypress government official believes that the explosives that the suspect had were not real but they say they are still looking into it. authorities say that hijacking was over a personal matter and not terror related, according to them. we'll bring you a live report in our next hour. happening today, more details could be revealed in the beating investigation involving several alameda county sheriff deputies. today a civil rights lawsuit is expected to be filed as we learn that another deputy might also be involved. >> "today in the bay" bob redell is joining us live from san leandro with the very latest and a deputy now bribing a witness with the stolen jewelry. >> that's the allegation. good morning to you, kris and sam. that's why the alameda county

sheriff office a third deputy on paid leave for possibly stealing the necklace of a car thief suspect. a suspect whose beating was captured on videotape. this video shows the two deputies chasing the suspect. the suspect's 29-year-old petrof. chasing him into an alleyway and now repeatedly beating him. a third deputy took a necklace and used it to bribe witnesses not to report the beating. the necklace is seen in photographs in the alley and the necklace has since disappeared. >> if those allegations are true, then the deputy or deputies that took items and gave them away are no better than the criminals they arrested. >> after months of saying no deputies activated their body cameras, the sheriff office says

one of the deputies in the video may have accidentally done so. stole a car here in alameda county, ran two squad cars and led deputies on a high-speed chase into san francisco before being tracked down in that mission district alleyway. later this morning his attorneys expected to announce a civil lawsuit against the two deputies who beat his client and then the sheriff of alameda county greg ahern is expected to give a news conference a little bit later this afternoon. reporting live here in san leandro, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. now to santa clara county where there are new accusations of misconduct against sheriff laurie smith. this comes just days after the blue ribbon commission looking into jail operation change it recommended a change of leadership. the deputy sheriff association of santa clara county claimed sheriff smith tried to influence the commission's leader that retired the judge during a private meeting back on march 3rd.

judge cordell has confirmed to nbc bay area. as for meetings with her in palo alto and the sheriff possible re-election was brought up. we reached out to sheriff laurie smith, as well. she remains focused on keeping santa clara county safe. guilty of indecent exposure. santa clara police sergeant was found guilty yesterday of exposing himself and propositioning a store manager at santana row in san jose. held nude in a back storage room. now sentenced tomorrow. he is a 24-year veteran of the force who is facing jailtime and willy lose his job and be forced to register as a sex offender. new details now on a house fire in santa rosa. we are learning morning that the fire started after a woman set herself on fire. that woman was facing an eviction order. investigators say 44-year-old melissa mcmullen doused herself

with gasoline on sunday and then lit herself on fire in her own bedroom. the room erupted in flames which quickly started to spread through that four-uniproperty in santa rosa southwest neighborhood. her son dragged her out and saved her life. she is now hospitalized with third degree burns and could face arsage charnels. she was due to be evicted next month. well, high anxiety over expanding santana row san jose. more housing to be built. more than 100 people took their concerns to a meeting in san jose last night. the developer has been buying up property since 1998, including an apartment building nearby and police or rather people living in thatting say they are being forced out and they don't know where to go. >> it is tough to live in the bay area, honestly. just for rent. a regular studio is like $1,700. >> people want more housing.

put it in the general plan to have housing, which is dense housing and then when it comes time to build it. people don't want it next to them. >> the city's planning director will make the ultimate decision over how many housing units will be built. google's plan to build a new campus in mountain view will hit a snag later today. the company wants to tear down dozens of redwood trees and backlash from community members about that. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang joining us from mountain view with sides of the controversy and, ultimately, steph, it comes down to heritage trees. >> that's right. 100 of these, 160 redwoods set to be removed are heritage trees. we stumbled across this visual summary a google bike leaning on a redwood here. symbolic of the tech giant to remove those trees to make room for a new campus. again, 100 of them are

considered heritage and that's because of their age and their size. removal does require a permit. google updated plans last month detailing the nearly 600,000 square foot campus set to be on east road. the tech giant will replant trees like oaks and cottonwoods that are native to the area and redwoods are not. arbrists we spoke with said that is far better than keeping the redwoods that are either stressed or dead here in the area after four drought years. >> in this area, it would be better to introduce a more appropriate tree for the environment. >> google is not the only company trying to remove trees for development around here. nbc bay area compiled a list of projects with the most tree removal permit requests and found microsoft, as well as el camino hospital are also trying to get about 200 other heritage trees removed. so, google not the only one. but google is the one being

at 5:44. breaking news to tell you about. this from d.c. u.s. capitol police very active. a suspicious package right near where an incident took place yesterday where a man flashed a gun and was shot by capitol police leading to a very frenzied situation. a suspishing package being investigated at the u.s. capitol. as soon as we have more details, we'll bring them back to you. more details about the man who was shot at that u.s. cap visitor center in d.c. yesterday. the suspect survived. he is now facing charges and we're learning that this is not his first run in with the law. larry is in critical, but stable condition after surgery.

meanwhile, new delays are pushing back the opening of the brussels airport. parts of the airport may open tomorrow, but, of course, it will be months everything is fully operational, again. well, there is more criticism this morning for a company that seems to get nothing but criticism. >> scott mcgrew, former silicon valley high flier we're talking about. >> ceranos that became worth millions from the ceo that dropped out of stanford and there you see her on the left with the vice president. many worry her technology does not work at all. a new paper published in a medical journal said test subjects who submitted their results received results that were vastly different than what traditional results showed. the results were so different it could affect decisions made by doctors whether to give their patients statins to protect

their hearts. the doctors tried to show the results to thernos but they couldn't get anybody to respond. they ultimately tried to use the in-mail function of linkedin to try to get a response from the company. yahoo! has set april 11th as the deadline for buyers. tell yahoo! what parts they would like to buy and for how much. yahoo! is under pressure to get the sale done before an activist investor attempts to throw the company's board out this summer. the fbi on monday dropped its demand that apple opened the iphone. this comes after the fbi said it was able to open the iphone itself. here we see the director of the fbi insisting to congress that only apple would be able to do that. that disconnect between what the fbi said and what it actually did is bringing the fbi some criticism this morning. the editorial board at the conservative wall street journal said, the fbi and the justice department continue to supply

more reasons to doubt their credibility and even their basic confidence. >> thank you, scott. laura is leaping in. turned out that earthquake country is expanding beyond the west coast and alaska. new findings show that more areas are becoming earthquake prone. the usgs is issuing a new first of its kind earthquake prediction map which forecasts one year out. california still very much at risk and very active with numerous quake faults, that's not a surprise. but now areas in the central part of united states eastern states also growing in risk. the change is entirely man made and has to do with activities like oil drilling and fracking, which can cause the earth's crust to become unsettled. >> a few states, such as texas and oklahoma, the seismic is comparable to many parts of

going to be beautiful one and it won't be as chilly with the winds gusting later today. and now it's 40 degrees in the east bay and also in the peninsula as we get a closer look at the east bay, we even have some 30s on the map there. check out walnut creek. 39 degrees and 38 in dublin and pleasanton as well as sunol. in the north bay, we're at 37 degrees. yes, a veriy start. we will have milder mornings over the next few days. gets milder today in san francisco. we will be at 50 degrees at 8:00 as you head out for that morning drive. we'll see some upper 50s by 11:00. eventually hitting 60 degrees there today. and all of that sunshine helping to warm the rest of the bay area up, too. up to 64 degrees in san jose and palo alto. the castro 61 degrees. oakland 65 and also 65 today in danville. the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen and our temperatures will be trending more into the 70s for the next few days.

here's a look at what we're expecting for san jose. by tomorrow, we'll be up to 67 degrees, which is right where we should be for this time of year. into friday, saturday will be in the low 70s and then sunday a few more clouds mixed in and we'll be in the upper 60s. so, the temperatures come down just a couple degrees. the futurecast shows the satellite and the radar will show absolutely nothing until this weekend when we start to see a few more clouds moving in and also a chance of rain shown here by the green between monday into tuesday. the weekend forecast stays dry. high temperatures in the upper 60s to lower 70s. a very pleasant weekend on the way. ly sunny and also on sunday. sunday partly cloudy skies and right at about 70 degrees in the tri-valley. that's a look at weather. and let's see how the roads are moving across the san mateo bridge with anthony. >> that's where we're seeing the worst slowing across the east bay. really not all that bad and the camera is still showing things are moving smoolthly.

the rape case against a former stanford swimmer is expected to go to the jury today. closing arguments will wrap up this morning in brock turner's trial. turner is accused of raping a woman on campus in january. during the witnesses claim they saw turner on top of that woman who was unconscious. turner is looking at ten years in prison, if convicted. happening later today, president obama set to address america's growing drug problem from atlanta today. mr. obama is going to speak at the national prescription drug abuse and heroin summit. today the administration is going to issue a proposed rule that would increase the number of opioid addicted patients. they include prescription pain kill claim more than 29,000 lives in 2014. that is the highest number on record. well, san francisco police are giving the green light to a device that helps ensure that dui drivers don't get behind the
