cruz, kasich all taking a step back from that earlier pledge to support the gop nominee. this as donald trump deals with battery charges against the man who is running his campaign. we'll talk to mr. trump in just a little while, but first nbc national correspondent peter alexander has the latest on all of this. peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. two significant developments this morning. first, all the republican candidates now backing away from their initial loyalty pledge to support the republican nominee. donald trump staying loyal to his campaign manager even after he's been charged with battery. donald trump standing by his man even in the wake of new surveillance video that police say shows trump's campaign manager, core ry lewandowski grabbing michelle fields. this is a misdemeanor. fields telling investigators she was yanked backward nearly

falling to the ground after a trump news conference. lewandowski arrested and charged. they say he's absolutely innocent. his boss taking on his accuser. >> i almost fell to the ground. she didn't almost fall to the ground. by the way, she was grabbing me. am i supposed to press charges against her? oh, my arm is hurting. >> reporter: fields earlier pushing back at trump. my story never changed, she tweeted. seriously, just stop lying. trump repeatedly praised his top deputy insisting he won't be fired. >> i think they've really hurt a very good person and i know it would be very easy for me to discard people. i don't discard people. >> reporter: at the time fields and lewandowski traded tweets. she showed photos of her bruises and lewandowski dismissed her as totally delusional. >> how do you know those bruises weren't there before? >> reporter: trump's take, fields could have been a threat. >> she had a pen in her hand. >> reporter: trump's opponents pounced.

a defensible contact, if he thought she was making contact with mr. trump. i know she was warned twice before by secret service that she shouldn't get as close as she was to mr. trump. so those are the -- >> so wait a second. so you're saying that mr. lewandowski might have been reacting to what he perceived as a threat against mr. trump? >> 100%. you know, that's one of the things that we have to investigate. not only that, but we also have to investigate what she actually said to the police. if you read the police report, it doesn't match what's on the video. the police report essentially was saying that she was pulled so hard that she almost lost her balance. >> here's what she said. she said someone grabbed me tightly by the arm and yanked me down. i almost fell to the ground but was able to maintain my balance. nonetheless, i was shaken. do you see anything on that tape that disputes that? >> i certainly see that she didn't almost lose her balance. i don't think that it -- when you watch it in real time, literally it's a half a second. it is -- it is a -- an incident

that i don't believe corey thought was anything. i don't think anyone that was present thought was anything. plrp police on the scene that she never reported to, that she never said, hey, this is what happened. there's a lot of things that i think are in dispute here. >> obviously someone else will decide whether this is misdemeanor battery, but the verdict is in on one thing, and that is corey lewandowski lied, didn't he? he went to twitter following this event and he said she was delusional, that he never touched her. in fact, that video shows him touching her and she was not delusional. isn't that a verdict that's in? >> it does show that. now the question becomes, you know, when an incident happens that i don't remember or i don't recall in terms of like -- if i run into somebody at a heat game, if i run into somebody at a yankee game, i'm not going to remember that like the person is going to remember that. the person may say, oh, hey, i got pulled down, i almost fell to the ground -- >> with all due respect though, he says he never touched her.

>> correct. >> he clearly reached out with the intent of grabbing her and pulling her back. the video does not lie about that. >> no, the video shows contact. what i'm saying is in corey's mind, the next day if someone says, hey, i was pulled -- almost pulled to the ground and you don't even recall that incident, you don't recall that individual, if you look at the video, corey isn't even looking at her. he doesn't make any reaction towards her. he doesn't look at her face. he doesn't even know what he's -- all he's seeing is a hand. >> last question. there's another rid yes tape that shows at another event mr. lewandowski previously grabbing a protester by the collar and pulling him back. why is corey lewandowski putting his hands on people at campaign events? >> well, corey is an ex-new hampshire trooper. he actually went to the police academy. a lot of people don't realize that. if he sees a threat or if he sees something that he feels is unnormal or something that is irregular, he, you know, thinks that he can take action. >> isn't that the job of the

secret service? >> it's not just the job of the secret service. everyone is responsible for mr. trump's security. >> all right. brad cone, thank you so much. >> thanks for having me, matt. >> all right. we also had a chance earlier this morning to speak to ben shapiro. he was the editor of breitbart. he quit once they failed to back his reporter. >> i know you're close with michelle fields, the reporter in question here. how is she doing? how does she respond to the fact that charges have now been filed? and what did she think of the video when it came to light? >> well, i mean, she was happy the video had came to light. she was always saying that she was grabbed by the arm, yanked and bruised. despite what the trump followers were saying and one of the reason why is she hasn't be been doing on camera interviews. she never wanted to be part of the story. she never wanted to be part of the story.

all she wanted was an apology from lewandowski and the trump campaign. now they're lying about the lies that they lied about. we're all the way through the looking glass on this story. >> at this point if she were to get an apology from corey lewandowski, would she be willing to drop the charges? >> i think that would be probably insufficient. it's up to the police to determine if the charges are merry torious. a simple battery took place under florida law. regardless of what they think of the severity of the incident or non-severity of the incident, the trump campaign's decision to stupidly think it was -- now you have donald trump suggesting that michelle fields assaulted him and corey lewandowski like the heroes of normandy stepped in and affected mr. trump from a 110 pound reporter. >> that was ben shapiro.

time, and they're all -- most of them are laughing at the charges. >> mr. trump, i want to -- >> you have destroyed -- matt, you're going to destroy a man's life over what happened? >> let me jump -- >> she changed her tune a lot after she saw that she was on tape. >> it's going to sound, mr. trump, like i'm going back here, but i am. right after this incident corey lewandowski tweeted that he was calling bull blank on miss fields. he tweeted that she was delusional and he tweeted that he never touched her. the videotape easily and plainly shows that, in fact, he did grab her and did pull her and whether you want to debate whether she almost fell down or not, he didn't tell the truth. if you're president of the united states and a member of your staff, your chief of staff goes to the american people and publicly doesn't tell the truth in the way that corey lewandowski hasn't told the truth, would you put up with it? >> well, i don't know if it wasn't, matt.

i'll be honest with you, when you look at what happened, it was so minor that he might not have even thought about it because to be honest with you, when you look at this, it was so minor, people are calling saying, what is this all about? we have people in the middle east chopping off heads and drowning people in cages and he brushes her and he brushed her to get probably, probably to get her hand off my arm. so it was so minor he might not have even realized it took place and then he was informed later on that it took place and he might have not known even frankly what happened. >> mr. trump, let me ask you a general question here. if you look at this videotape and then you look at that videotape from another event where he is said to have briefly, briefly grabbed a protester's shirt collar and pull him back, the simple question, we've asked others, why is your campaign manager putting his hands on people at your events? why is he allowed to do that? >> because this protester was an agitator.

take a look at the horrible, disgusting sign that that protester had. take a look at the protester's hands were around a woman's neck in front of him and he barely touched him also. he had two fingers on his shirt and then he took them off and security took the guy out. he was an agitator. he was a bad guy. he was an agitator and, frankly, to a certain extent you could say there was a certain amount of courage. he got very incensed when he saw the signs. the sign was a horrible sign that this guy was holding and he didn't do any damage to the guy because security took it. >> just in the few seconds i have left -- >> matt, are we going to destroy -- are we going to destroy a man's life? >> no, but we also shouldn't destroy a reporter's life. will you or mr. lewandowski -- >> she lied, matt. she wasn't thrown to the ground. >> she didn't say she was thrown to the ground. >> she said she almost fell down -- >> but she didn't almost fall down, matt. she didn't even change the expression on her face. look at her face. i mean, during this whole incident if somebody whacks you

or somebody gives either of you a shot, you're going to be, wow. your mouth is going to open. you're going to be screaming a little bit. she didn't even change expression on her face. >> but, mr. trump, why are you parsing her words and then giving the benefit of the dot to your campaign manager. >> i'm not parsing her words. >> who clearly states i didn't touch her. the video clearly didn't touch her. >> because the incident was so minor. savannah, the incident was so minor that i honestly believe -- look, i know this guy. he's an honorable guy. he's a decent man. he has four beautiful kids and a wife in new hampshire. these other candidates, they're weak. you should immediately get rid of him. for what? they want me to fire him. why? because of this incident? >> wasn't an immediate apology on his part have taken care of this? wouldn't it have taken care of this if he had simply said, i'm sorry? >> i actually don't think so. i think she would have pressed charges anyway because i think she likes it. that's my opinion.

>> reporter: savannah, good morning. the suspected hijacker faced the judge this morning who ordered him held for eight days. he faces possible kidnapping charges after a bizarre six-hour standoff right here at this airport. >> it was a selfie seen around the world. an alleged hijacker posing with a passenger. >> he asked him to take a picture and he took a picture. >> reporter: this morning people say seif mustaffa has a criminal record. surveillance video shows him breezing through security. an egyptian foreign ministry expert telling them, quote, he's not a terrorist, he's an idiot. it took off from alexandria bound for cairo. it was diverted to cypress. 8 americans were on board. among them a man from new york.

>> i texted my husband saying, okay, i got kidnapped. >> reporter: she says the flight attendants were calm and didn't tell passengers about the hijacking until they landed. >> at this moment the people started to really panic. i stayed like shocked for 15 minutes and i keep saying are you zero zblous. >> reporter: the hijacker kept the flight crew and people with foreign passports on board. one of the pilots scrambled out the cockpit window. the hijack er took this picture. i'm not sure why i did it he told the sun newspaper. i figured if his bomb was real i had nothing to lose anyway. this whole incident has raised new questions about egyptian airport security six months after isis claimed it brought down a russian jet. matt and savannah, as for the motive behind all of this, that is still unclear.

the hijack drama ending peacefully with the safe release of all 72 people on the flight. big developments in the fight over president obama's pick for the supreme court. on the same day that merrick garland held his first meeting tuesday with a republican senator, mark kirk of illinois, the court announced the first major decision that ended in a tie since the death of justice scalia. it leaves a lower court ruling in tact, a victory for unions representing public employees. >> now to alarming new findings just out this morning on car headlights that could explain why you have trouble seeing when you drive at night. willie has that story. >> good morning. how well do your headlights work? according to a study of midsized cars, the answer is, not so well. >> of the more than 30 midsized cars rated in the study, only one was rated good. the top trim level toyota

in their mailbox, typewritten letters talking about, quote, young blood. a possible reference to their three children. >> they have a sick feeling in their stomach. >> reporter: so terrifying, the family is trying to sell for $1.25 million, about $105,000 less than what they paid for it in 2014. >> i think anybody who purchases this home is going to have a great home. it's a shame what occurred here. you don't wish this on your worst enemy. >> reporter: the family tried to move last year after claiming the watcher sent an eerie letter three days after closing on the home. so weirded out, they didn't move in. why are you here? i will find out, the watcher wrote. the watcher also wrote, my grandfather watched the house in the 1920s and my father watched it in the 1960s. it is now my time. a second letter taunted, have they found what is in the walls yet? i am pleased to know your names now and the name of the young blood you have brought to me. the family is suing previous owners, john and andrea woods,

claiming they got letters too when they lived there but didn't disclose it because they worried the sale would fall through. the woods are countersuing for other charges, including defamation. they admit they did receive an anonymous note but denied it was disturbing. >> we don't have the letter of what was sent. what we do have is the three letters that my clients received. >> reporter: the watcher writing in another alleged letter, all the windows and doors allow me to watch you and track you. a dream house that became anything but and now, a frightened family just wants to move on. >> this has been an absolute nightmare for them. they're good people. they deserve to have peace. >> reporter: the family also -- the family attorney also tells us that they plan to expand their lawsuit to include a corporate defendant. meanwhile, the westfield police department tells us they're trying to figure out who is writing those creepy letters. matt and savannah?

♪ welcome to my house we're back with our start today spring forward series. all morning long, "today" contributor jill martin has been giving a cluttered bedroom a 40-minute makeover. that's what it looked like in the first place. now it's been completely revamped. we're ready to check it out. good morning and good to see you. >> good morning. >> was it a big challenge? >> i think spring cleaning is overwhelming for so many people. i wanted to give an outline. something to do in 40 minutes in your house to whip any room into shape. to get you started. we have the help of our plaza today, which is amazing. >> nice. one of the places all the clutter finds itself is in the closet. what did you do? >> we de-cluttered. we showed the before and after. it's super dramatic. look at the after shot now. you saw what it looked like earlier today. this really can be done in 40

minutes with just a little prep the night before. so this is the new closet. here's the deal. we had a little help earlier. you can get rid of 75% of what you already have in your closet. you know it's a real story. you've done it recently. >> maybe 30%. >> we only wear 25% of what we have. these are a few criteria to do instantly. this is a great shirt. if you don't wear it, it doesn't belong in your closet. if you don't wear it, even though it's great, do you keep it or toss it? >> toss. >> that's exactly right. >> so cool. let's make a deal here. monte, monte! >> anybody have a toothbrush? no. okay, this is a great shirt. doesn't fit. if it doesn't fit, even though it is a great shirt, keep or toss? >> toss! >> see? >> okay. >> eliminate anything with rips or pulls. >> that could be stylish. >> it can be. anything that is not stylish that you don't wear that has

together. >> just on what -- >> low. until it's combined. >> oops. >> way too much. turn it off. >> not a race car. >> sorry. >> we want to chill the dough. important for shortbread cookies. you can also make -- that's distracting. >> i turned it off. turned it off. >> you can make it into a disk so you can roll it out. >> easier to cut frozen like that? >> yeah. try cutting one to show it's easy. over here, we have a cookie cutter which you can do it this way. >> nice. >> we'll bake them about 12 minutes in a 350 degree oven, n until they get brown on the edge. powdered sugar, pea nunut butte and vanilla. >> any fancy peanut butter? >> creamy peanut butter. favorite creamy peanut butter. roll it around so it has a dome

at the top. >> gotcha. >> then over here, i'm going to take two forks. this is my trick for dipping in chocolate. let it go in and -- >> the whole thing. just like the girl scouts do. >> look at that. >> use the other fork to get the excess off. then you're in the messy. >> well done. >> i do lick the fork afterwards. there they are. >> let's try the finished product. >> what are we making back here? >> samoas, my favorite as a kid. the cookie base is the same but we have coconut, caramel and chocolate. over here, we have caramels that carson unwrapped all of them this morning. >> i did. >> we'll add a little milk to the caramel to make it creamy. then we're going to add toasted coconut, which i toasted in the oven at 300 degrees for about

good morning, a few minutes before 9:00. i'm kris sanchez. we have a developing story on the peninsula where police are looking for a man they say jumped the counter of a pharmacy last night and stole thousands of pills. this happened at a walgreens in burlingame on el camino royale. after jumping the counter the man pulled a knife and demanded to be taken to the xanax and hydrocodone supplies. he left with about 3200 pills.

the man police are looking for is described as 5'11", about 180 pounds. it's believed he drove off with a man who was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and some sort of black compact vehicle is what he was driving. happening now, bob redell is in burlingame talking with police and store keepers. we'll have a live report in our midday newscast. you can also watch for updates in our twitter feed including getting another look at the armed robber. also, neighbors are stunned after the death in palm springs of a silicon valley executive. he was elect cuted as he jumped into a pool to save his daughters. one of the daughters is now in critical condition from that shock. the family lives on the ping peninsula. we have a link to their story on our home story and what investigators believe what happened.

about taking on a role like this? it seems like such a departure. >> it is. that's kind of why i was sort of into it, you know. skip stone pictures came to me with this script, and i read it. the script was great. that's what it's all about. i had wrapped "melissa and joey" after 5 1/2 years, which was a comedy, what i'm known for. i told my team, it would be great to see feature opportunities. we did five indies last year, and this was one of them. this one turned out good. it was a two hander. me and the female lead, catalina, for basically the entire movie. takes place over eight hours on thanksgiving. what i like about it is it is a faith-based movie, like "war room" and these things, but it isn't preachy. it's a spiritual renaissance. >> is that important to you, to make sure it is not a -- it doesn't have a preachy tone, but evolves? >> yes, to me, i think that

preaching sometimes, you know, is good for the audience that wants to hear it. but the audience that isn't into it sort of shuts its ears off. if it is a spiritual message, it hits you. you could sort of lead people by example rather than giving them the exact words you want them to say. to me, that's the way to parent. that's the way to lead. >> you have so much energy, positive energy. even talking right now, makes me smile. this movie is a dark character. >> yeah. >> how was that for you? >> it was cool. you know, look, this is what we do as actors. >> beginning of the film and the evolution through. >> loses his wife, loses everything. it's the seven-year anniversary of her death. he hasn't been able to get his life back on track. feels the best way is maybe to take his own, to join her. >> really dark. >> when he least expects it, you know, something happens and he meets this woman. she changes his life. and if you're open to things like that, i think that's how sort of life happens.
