thursday, "early today" starts right now. good morning, everyone, donald trump created a firestorm during a town hall meeting hosted by msnbc's chris matthews. the pair talked about everything from immigration to marijuana, but the most surprising moment came while discussing abortion. >> should the woman be punished for having an abortion? >> look -- >> this is not something you can dodge. if you say -- abortion is a crime or abortion is murder, you have to deal with it under the law. should abortion be punished? >> well people in certain parts of the republican party and conservative republicans would say yes, they should be punished. >> how about you? >> i would say it's a very serious problem. and it's a problem that we have to decide on. it's very -- >> you're for banning it. >> well wait rurks going to say put them in jail? is that? >> i'm asking you, you say you want to ban it. what does that mean? >> i am pro life. >> how do you ban abortion? >> you go back to a position like they had where people will

perhaps go to illegal places. >> yeah. >> but you have to ban it. >> you ban it and they go to somebody who flunked out of medical school. >> are you catholic? >> yes. >> how do you feel about the catholic church's position? >> i accept my church's teaching on moral issues. i concur with the moral position. >> let me ask you, but what do you say about -- >> it's not funny. >> your church? it's not funny. what do you say about your church. >> the churches make your moral judgments. you running for president will the chief executive of the united states. do you believe in punishment for abortion, yes or no, as a principle. >> the answer is there has to be some form of punishment. >> for the woman? >> yes. there has to be some form. >> ten years? >> i don't know. >> why not? you take positions in everything else. >> i do take positions in everything else, it's a very complicated position. >> you tell me what the law should be. you say you're pro life. >> i am pro life.
4:03 am
>> what's that mean? >> i am pro life. i have not determined what the punishment will be. >> why not? >> because i haven't determined it. >> by saying you're pro life. you want to ban abortion. how do you ban abortion without a sanction. then you get into the tricky point about sanction. a fine on human life, which you would call murder. fine, imprisonment for a young woman who finds herself pregnant? >> it would have to be determined. >> what about the guy who got her pregnant, is he responsible under the law for the abortion. >> different feelings for different people. i would say no. >> the backlash for trump's comments was swift. >> should women who get abortions be punished. >> absolutely not. i do have exceptions for rape, incest and life of the mother. of course women shouldn't be punished. i think probably donald trump will figure out a way to say he didn't say it i don't think

4:05 am
overturn roe v. wade. >> we would not advocate any form of punishment for a woman who has made such a desperate and sad choice as abortion. >> after the interview, trump released a statement fully walking back his remarks. stating if abortion was illegal, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible. not the woman. the woman is a victim in this case, as is the life in her womb. my position has not changed, like ronald reagan, i am pro life with exceptions. this all comes as a new poll taken before last night's town halls shows cruz ahead of trump in next week's important wisconsin primary. drastic shift from mid february when trump had a commanding lead. trump is also polling behind both cruz and john kasich in support among women in that state. while on the democratic side, sanders is ahead of clinton by four points, a slight increase from february. well it was a frightening night of severe weather with many, 28 million people at risk.
