we want to get right to nbc's steve patterson. he's in mississippi this morning where one of those two tornadoes touched down. hey, steve, good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah, willie, good morning to you. welcome to columbus, mississippi, really the epicenter of where one of those tornadoes touched down. now crews getting to work, starting to clean up some of this mess, debris and power lines everywhere, trees toppled over, revealing roots taller than i am. but really, this damage is just part of a larger system causing devastation for days. multiple tornadoes touched down in mississippi thursday. >> all right, it's not coming this way. >> reporter: sending many running for cover. >> when we come running out of the shop, there was some tin coming flying off the top of the shop there. it's nothing i've ever seen or been in. >> reporter: overnight, blinding rain battered residents in alabama, high winds toppling the roof of this gas station. in oklahoma, a community worked together to clean up the damage after a twister caused widespread destruction in the tulsa area.

>> telephone poles are still damaged, so they could fall. so, let's just stay out of the way. >> reporter: a heavy hail storm wreaking havoc in arkansas. the violent storm system tossing trailers like toys at this mobile home park in kentucky, peeling layers off the roof of a middle school gymnasium while students and staff hunkered down inside. >> we knew that there was a severe thunderstorm warning, so we decided to not load buses, and everything happened very, very quickly. >> reporter: and back in mississippi, first responders worked overnight to clear debris-scattered roads of trees and power lines. and this morning we're hearing about severe weather so bad in georgia, it forced a lockdown at robbins air force base. still, despite everything we showed you, no major injuries reported. savannah and willie? >> all right, steve patterson, thank you. >> and that storm threat stretches all the way up here into the northeast today. dylan's in for al this morning. dylan, what are we looking at here? >> we are going to see more storms in the southeast, but each day gets a little bit better, so we aren't going to

see a big outbreak today. more flooding rain is going to be an issue today, although we do have some tornado warnings right now just south of atlanta. those will weaken and the storms will weaken as they move eastward, but we are still looking at the damage from yesterday. a lot of wind damage reports and four reported tornadoes, but nothing causing too much damage on thursday. today, though, our threat stretches from virginia all the way back into new orleans. again, large hail, damaging wind gusts and an isolated tornado is possible, but it's really the risk of flooding rains. this cold front is going to sag to the southeast and not move eastward all that quickly. so, as these lines of showers and storms develop, we will see the potential of possibly flash flooding through southern georgia and northern florida. we could see as much as a widespread 3 inches of rain, but some areas in the heavier downpours could end up with 6 to 8 inches of rain, and that's what could lead to some flooding. >> all right, dylan, keep us posted on that. we move now to the presidential race and the battle for wisconsin, where new polls have the front-runners trailing. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is following the latest.

peter, good morning. >> hi, savannah, good morning. four days now until wisconsin and donald trump's looking to make up ground this weekend in the badger state. he still leads the delegate race, but his campaign, of course, has been consumed by controversies this week, exposing real vulnerabilities for the billionaire. off the trail and behind closed doors, donald trumng to regain his footing, huddling privately with foreign policy advisers in person for the first time, then with the rnc and chairman reince priebus, discussing convention rules and delegates. >> they're very good people, very, actually, a terrific meeting, i think, and it's really a unity meeting. >> but the party remains deeply divided, setting up a critical showdown in wisconsin next tuesday. perhaps the stop trump movement's best opportunity to do just that, with ted cruz building a double-digit lead. >> there's no doubt that donald trump is the kim kardashian presidential candidate. he sits on twitter and makes a lot of noise, but he has no solutions to fixing the problems.

>> reporter: for trump, a defeat would be stinging. his biggest setback since iowa, now under fire on right-wing radio for clumsy comments on abortion this week. >> the ammunition that gave democrats last night, i can't tell you how it's rejuvenated them. >> reporter: trump's backers now offering air support. >> sure, i get grief when i say i'm voting for donald trump, but you know what, i want to protect my family. >> reporter: kasich's allies taking a cue from trump. >> if ted cruz's mouth is moving, he's lying. >> reporter: kasich himself taking front-runner. >> as commander in chief and leader of the free world, you don't get do-overs. you need to be able to get it right the first time. >> reporter: just as the billionaire is showing weakness in wisconsin, so is the former secretary of state, now trailing challenger bernie sanders there by four points. hillary clinton's aides bracing for a possible loss, making it crucial that she hold on to her home state, new york, april 19th. clinton losing her cool after a shouted question from an environmental activist.

>> will you act on your word and reject fossil fuel money in the future in your campaign? >> i am so sick of the sanders campaign lying about me. i'm sick of it. >> reporter: earlier brushing off both of her rivals. >> i have one million more votes than donald trump, and i have 2 1/2 million more votes than bernie sanders! >> still, bernie sanders has the energy and the financial fuel to extend this race as long as he likes. after raising more than $43 million in february, the sanders campaign announced yesterday that it beat that total in march. the money keeps pouring in. 97% of the cash they've raised has come from donations online. savannah and willie? >> all right, peter alexander in washington. thank you. >> chuck todd is nbc's political director and moderator of "meet the press." chuck, good to see you this morning. >> good morning. >> take us inside that room in washington with reince priebus and donald trump in a week where donald trump has said he would not support the nominee, necessarily, and a week where he had to defend his campaign manager against battery charges in a week where he had comments

to chris matthews about abortion. what was it like in that room? >> and you left out in a week where he said he was going to do the loyalty pledge and -- >> we only have so much time. >> i know, it's been one of those weeks for donald trump. ironically, it was a meeting that had been scheduled last week, but the timing, of course, because of everything that's happened this week gave it, i think, added value and added interest to a lot of people, but it really was about the trump campaign trying to get a better handle on the rules. and remember, they're just learning, and i think what happened last week in louisiana -- this is a state that he won and then it turned out ted cruz after the fact at the state convention ends up with more delegates out of louisiana than trump, and it was sort of a wake-up call to the trump campaign that they've got a lot to learn about the rules and they need to stop trashing the rnc and start learning and working with them if they want to have a shot at winning this nomination and uniting this party. >> let's talk about wisconsin. there's a new poll out that

shows trump trailing pretty badly, double digits. >> right. >> is that a one-off, or is this potentially a sign of trump coming back down to earth, or is that just establishment fantasy? >> well, we'll see. i mean, i hesitate to say that this might be the week that you finally see the establishment striking back. but there's a couple things that are different about wisconsin that make you think, you know what, these polls are real and trump's in trouble. number one, it is a conservative movement that is successful in wisconsin. they're not as divided, they're not as split, they're not as unhappy. scott walker's been a two-term governor. they've got the speaker of the house in paul ryan, the chairman of the rnc in reince priebus. these are all wisconsin guys. they're not big fans of this populist movement, they haven't been fans of trump. and i think you're seeing that movement coalesce itself. then there is the other factor -- civility. wisconsin, similar to its neighboring states of iowa and minnesota. they both sort of expect a certain decorum when you conduct yourself. trump doesn't really fit it very well. and guess what? he lost iowa, he lost minnesota. i wouldn't be shocked if, because of civility, he also

loses wisconsin. >> chuck, stay in wisconsin but hop over to the democrats. bernie sanders with a small lead or within the margin of error, at least tied with hillary clinton there, looking ahead to new york down the road. >> right. >> that's probably a little tighter than hillary clinton would like it to be right now. what's the level of concern, despite her advantage in delegates, about this race right now? >> well, you can judge the level of concern by her schedule. three days ago she had no plans on spending this weekend in wisconsin and instead was going to spend it all in new york. what did she do? she and bill clinton added events on saturday in wisconsin. they are afraid of getting blown out. they know they might lose, but they'd like to lose the way they lost michigan, 52-48, something like that. they don't want to get blown out. they don't want another new hampshire situation, which there's an outside possibility of that. wisconsin's electorate fits bernie sanders, madison, really the heart of the progressive movement in many ways in the midwest. he could do very well. a big win for him there and he boomerangs and he may get a big win out of new york.

so, part of what the clinton campaign's trying to do to fix new york is to make sure they don't get clobbered in wisconsin. >> all right, we will see, and i know you will be chewing on all this on sunday on "meet the press." we'll be watching. thanks. thank you. now we move to virginia, where a state trooper who was shot at a bus station in richmond has died from his injuries. the gunman was killed by other officers and the investigation is under way. nbc justice correspondent pete williams is following this story. pete, good morning. >> savannah, good morning. authorities are saying this was not an act of terrorism, but it was a sudden outbreak of violence in richmond, the capital city of virginia. the city councilwoman called it one of the saddest days she's ever seen there. a burst of gunfire rang out at midafternoon inside the bus station in downtown richmond. >> on scene at greyhound terminal, multiple victims. this is going to be a mass casualty working incident. >> reporter: travelers ducked for cover or rushed to get out, others heading inside turned and ran. >> i heard two gunshots go off.

i didn't think they were gunshots, but then there were like five, maybe ten more after that, and i could see the muzzle flash through the tinted door, and so i ran out of there. >> reporter: law enforcement officials say state police were conducting a counter-drug training mission that included talking to people in the bus station. they say trooper chad dermyer, age 37, wearing a uniform, approached a man to ask some routine questions. >> the male subject pulled out a handgun and shot chad multiple times. the male subject continued firing his weapon as two other state police troopers returned fire. >> reporter: the gunman ran but was shot and killed. >> medics with the shooter now, the shooter is down. area is secure. >> reporter: the wounded trooper was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. two women inside the terminal were wounded by gunfire, though not seriously, and were hospitalized for treatment. police are not revealing the gunman's name. they say he had a criminal record and was not from virginia. some officials say he had mental problems. greyhound says the richmond bus

station will be closed today and service in and out of the city has been canceled. trooper dermyer leaves behind a wife and two young children. savannah, willie? >> so sad. pete williams, thank you very much. and back to that dramatic video we showed you just at the top of the show. a whale watching ship slamming right into a dock. nbc's joe fryer has details on this one. joe, good morning. >> willie, good morning. the coast guard is investigating what happened. an apparent malfunction as that harbor cruise ship smashed into the pier, jolting everyone on board and scaring those who watched it all unfold. e who watt unfold. >> reporter: the largest whale watching ship on the west coast, the adventure horn blower, approaching the pier, horn sounds frantically not slowing down. people on the pier run for cover. the elderly lady just makes it to safety. 150 feet of steel meets brick. seven passengers injured. none of those injuries life threatening. some of the injured holding ice bags. a few needing stretchers to get off the ship.

a man from wisconsin was on the walkway. >> it came in fast. she skirted the side, hit the side. yelled something, i heard something. we were coming in fast and hard. >> reporter: passengers said the crew were yelling, "brace yourselves," or "hold on to something!" the horn blower combines sightseeing and whale watching. the 144 people on board saw more than they bargained for. one passenger said it was exciting, definitely something new. the ship's throttle apparently was stuck in the forward position. there will be another cruise today, but on a different ship. >> of the seven people injured, only three went to the hospital. all the injuries are considered minor, bumps and bruises. no doubt this morning, some passengers are waking up with some aches and pains. willie? >> glad the injuries weren't more serious. how would you like to be walking down a pier and seeing the ship coming at you? joe, thanks so much.

a good friday morning at 7:26. video of the horn blower cruise ship crashing into a san diego pier is trending on facebook. look at that ship coming in to dock. the video doesn't even do it justice. kept going until it collided into that pier yesterday. several people, including that elderly woman that was walking by there had to rush out of the way. a man was nice enough to come in and save her. seven people were injured and three of those people had to be taken to the hospital with minor neck and back pain. 139 passengers and five crew members were onboard the ship at the time. an investigation into that crash is under way right now and, man, that situation could have been a lot worse. >> yeah. thankfully no one got really

meeting with reince priebus terrific. we have been told it focused on the state of the race, the convention and delegate rules. a lawyer for the so-called d.c. madam claims to have phone records that could impact the election. kristin welker here with that story. >> good morning to you. this is an interesting one. could the 2016 race be rocked by a decade old scandal? that's the question this morning as one of the attorneys for the 2007 d.c. madam scandal fights to release records. he's gone all the way to the supreme court. yet another twist in the already raucus presidential race. he has information voters need to see, he says. s sibly is that attorney. this week he filed an

application with the supreme court, asking the court to allow him to release records from the d.c. madam escort service, names. without offering specifics he has stirred up a frenzy of speculation. >> those records contain information relevant to the 2016 presidential election. >> in this online video posted last month, he asks for donations for his mounting legal fees after lower courts denied his requests. >> i must continue this fight. >> this all started in 2007 when the d.c. madam scandal broke, rocking the nation's capital, even bringing down louisiana senator david vitter. >> i want to offer my deep sincere apologies to those i have let down with these actions for my past. i am completely responsible and i am so very very sorry.

officials in richmond, virginia are investigating how a police training exercise led to the fatal shooting of a state trooper. officers were talking to people in a downtown bus station as part of an anti-drug training mission. when trooper chad dermyer approached one man to ask routine questions. that man pulled out a handgun and shot that trooper. other troopers returned fire killing the suspect. two women inside the terminal were wounded. the suspect had a criminal record and this was not an act of terrorism. a chicago area woman said she feels like her son was born again after he survived a shooting that was caught on camera. the 5-year-old boy and izhad sister were with their mom in a grocery store when a bullet tore through the wall inches from the boy's head. police say a store employee who is also a licensed security guard brought his gun to work and put it down on a counter. another employee picked it up, it went off. both men are charged with

face? how do i do that? >> california state assemblyman mark levine is hoping to put around end to moments like that, proposing a new bill which would require health standards for models, including regular checkups and nutrition counseling. modeling agencies would have to be licensed by the state's labor commission. >> we're trying to protect the health of women in the fashion industry. studies show that up to 40% of fashion models have eating disorders. as many as 50% of girls in 5th to 12th grade think they're not thin enough because of the images they see in magazines. >> reporter: sara, ziff founder of model alliance began her career at age 14. she says more protection is needed, especially for younger models in an industry she calls largely unregulated. >> i'd like to see basic workplace health and safety standards in the fashion industry across the board.

ba on calories and carbs but i'm addicted to potato ships. i love the salty crunch. do you have a substitute? >> everybody loves potato chips. the first alternative is kale chips. before anybody rolls their eyes, you have to give it a shot. take a bunch of kale, whip it into two-inch pieces, lay it out on a baking sheet, mist it with oil, kosher salt and pop it in the oven on 400. eight to ten minutes. that's it. it is delicious. it's healthy. you can binge eat it. you can eat as much as you want. so low calorie. the other thing is light popcorn. it gets a little boring, right? to heighten the flavor, all you're going to do is make a big batch, top it with the oil mister and add parmesan cheese. you get the salt, pop and volume. >> it's unanimous. we want option two.

you. good morning. 9:26. i'm kris sanchez. happening now -- a man accused of killing his girlfriend on valentine's day is set to enter a plea in court. there is evidence possibly linking him to the murder. she lived? san jose but disappeared after a house party in hayward. police say the accomplice is also scheduled to appear in court. concerned parents in one east bay community are trying to put an end to acceptance week. it is a week of lessons on the lgbtq community scheduled at a school in san ramon. some parents have started an online petition to stop that lesson saying their children are

too young. the petition has hundreds of signatures already. the bay bridge series continues tonight at at&t park. last night thanks to a strong outing from jeff samardzija, he allowed no runs, struck out 5 through 5 innings of work and the giants backed him up with just enough offense to beat the a's 3-1. game two is tonight at 7:00 which you can watch right here on nbc bay area. we have a look at your baseball weather and traffic coming up after the break.

good friday morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. we'll have another beautiful day but we are still seeing those clouds along the coast. here is a look at the outer sunset, while san jose is all clear. temperatures have been cool to start out. it is 53 degrees? san jose and livermore, 54 in san francisco but we are heading into the 70s today. half moon bay will be at 65 degrees and 63 in napa. 71 in oakland today. things are still pretty slow in palo alto.

unfortunately, the same scenario all morning long. all week actually. this morning we had an accident near the 84 connecter keeping things slow. now just typical slowing we are seeing each and every morning. couple more citizens northbound on 101 in san jose. things still look good across the rest of the bay. the bay bridge approach, the maze, wide open here. meters turned off. more local news for you in just a half-hour. see you then.

taking a look at the headlines. with the tax deadline closing in, the justice department has a new warning about dishonest tax return preparers. you should be wary of anyone who guarantees a refund or claims to have a surefire way to reduce your taxes. never have your refund deposited directly into their bank account. don't use someone who claims bogus credits on your return, and never sign blank tax return forms. and there's new evidence that coffee can decrease your risk of colorectal cancer, even if it's decaffeinated. researchers at the university of southern california surveyed 5,000 people recently diagnosed with cancer and a control group of healthy people. after allowing for risk factors like diet and family history, they found that coffee drinkers

were 29% less likely to develop colorectal cancer. the benefits doubled for those who drank more than 2 1/2 cups a day. and tesla has unveiled its new model 3 electric car designed to be more affordable than earlier versions. prototypes unveiled thursday have panoramic glass roofs and seating for five adults. they're priced at $35,000. that's less than half the cost of earlier teslas. ceo elon musk says the car will go at least 215 miles on a single charge. the cars won't be available, though, until the end of next year. buyers have already preordered more than 130,000 cars. how long is that wait list then? and it was a daring dash for freedom for a donkey in fayetteville, arkansas. an officer's dash cam caught this hot pursuit. the donkey defied orders to stop, so officers eventually corralled the creature. they returned the donkey -- is this a real story?

rock and roll hall of fame. then the phone calls started. you know, people tried to get us together, so we could figure out how to do it. yeah, short ten years later, they were able to actually have a film come out. >> you know, i told you before we started the interview, you've given a gift to the world with this film. musicians, if you love movies. when you're playing someone like miles davis who has such an imprint in our mind, both his exterior and what we think we know about his interior, how do you channel through that, so you're not playing miles, you are miles? >> you know, i tried to really tell a story and create a narrative with the team. steven co-wrote the film with me. it felt like a miles experience, as opposed to trying to check all the boxes off his life. i just wanted to have a film that was experiential and felt innovative and was exciting and,

you know, kind of gangster. felt like what miles' music and the experience i have with miles is for me. >> you zeroed in on a time period. you didn't try to cover miles davis' entire journey. you said, this short period of time, with his first wife, that's important. why did you focus in on that? >> well, it's sort of framed and a bifurcated telling. there was a present time, and then there were these flashbacks that we always refer to. he is in a moment in his creativity where he's not playing. he's sort of stuck. that, for me, when you go through the research and you go, this prolific artist for all these years, so impactful, and now he goes silent for five years. what's going on there? why did that happen? how does he get out of it? does he get out of it? what does he say when he does get out of it? those were the questions that were the jumping off point for me. i thought, this is a good place to start the story. >> your directorial debut.

emma, you're now co-starring with your director. what is that dynamic like? >> it was exciting. it was different for me. that was a first, you know. i really felt protected, you know. when someone like don cheadle, who already knows what he's doing as an actor, and as a director, he brought the same skill. i felt protector in that sense. he was very present and very giving. it was my first experience, so it was a good one, thankfully. >> your wife has said you can never do this again. directing, starring. >> yeah. >> she put down the hammer. >> yeah. it was a lot. it was a lot to do. something i tried to give away about five years ago, you know. had it all gone away, i probably would have been relieved. a part of me would have been disappointed. just the task ahead of me was so daunting, i was like, i have to try to slough one of these gigs. ultimately, it was the only way we were going to get it done, is if i just, you know, strapped it on my back and did it all. that's what i did. i survived.
