national championship in the last four years. >> we will pay our respects to that team in a little while and have much more on the game. almost as exciting, the wisconsin primary. are the presidential front runners losing their grips? ted cruz had a commanding lead, complicating trump's path to the nomination. bernie sanders made history with another big win over hillary clinton. we'll start our coverage with peter alexander. >> good morning. nice to see you both in person today. donald trump and hillary clinton, the front runners having a bad night, will have to marinate in the losses until the primary in new york, april 19th. how does trump respond to the biggest adversity he's faced all campaign? >> god bless the great state of wisconsin. >> reporter: ted cruz savoring a sweeping victory over donald trump, insisting wisconsin has

reset the republican race. >> tonight is a turning point. it is a rallying cry. it is a call from the hard working men and women of wisconsin to the people of america. we have a choice. >> reporter: cruz embracing his wife, a recent trump target. >> heidi! >> reporter: the texas senator delivering a powerful message for the anti-trump movement. >> either before cleveland or at the convention in cleveland, together, we will win a majority of the delegates and together, we will beat hillary clinton in november. >> reporter: trump's stinging defeat after a rocky last week, demonstrating vulnerabilities for the front runner. the billionaire in manhattan, watching results with his family, blasted cruz as a trojan horse. recent adversity is revealing cracks in the campaign. nbc news learned of growing frustration and in-fighting

within trump's camp. multiple sources in the campaign and close to the candidate questioning how trump is being advised. warning he's too insulated by a handful of aides. corey lewandowski denying the reporting, calling it wholly inaccurate. trump pushing back hours earlier. >> i had not heard anything about the inner fightings of the campaign. we have a very successful campaign going, and i think we're going to keep it going. >> reporter: for the democrats, bernie sanders notching his sixth win in seven states. >> do not tell secretary clinton. she's getting a little nervous. i don't want her to get more nervous. but i believe we've got an excellent chance to win new york and a lot of delegates in that state. >> already facing an uphill battle, sanders is fending off criticism right here in new york.

here is the cover of new york's "daily news." attacking his opposition to a proposal that would permit victims of gun violence to sue manufacturers. sanders is calling the words inaccurate. >> quiet before new york. >> exactly. chuck todd is political director and moderator of "meet the press." he's at the board to break this down for us. >> morning. >> after wisconsin, on the democratic side, where do we stand? >> clinton has a significant lead. bernie sanders netted all of ten delegates, total. here's the magic number. she needs 33% of remaining delegates to get there. how does she get there? here are the remaining states. 33% of these plus super delegates. she'll be favored in the northeastern states. they've been tough for sanders. he's only been winning caucuses

and primaries in the midwest. let's go to the republican side. this is where it's interesting. here's what you need to know as far as the numbers. donald trump's percentage of the remaining to get to 1,237, he needs to win 58% of all remaining delegates. high bar, not impossible. the path forward is tricky. these are not winner take all states. if he gets 50% or more, he could win all 95 of the new york delegates. that would be a big deal. unlikely he pulls that off. that's why wisconsin is meaningful. basically, he's not going to win all these in california. he's going to lose some of these states here. we know that ted cruz does well in this part of the country. if you look now, i think we're at a pretty -- 70% chance of a contested convention. >> nicolle wallace joins us.

peter alexander turned into andrea mitchell. >> that's good television. i'll give you the headline and you fill in the blank. wisconsin just did what to the race? >> made it much more likely there's going to be a contests convention on the republican side. on the democratic side, you are going to have a bruising fight over her trustworthiness. sanders is going to keep coming at her. >> wisconsin just delivered donald trump an epic blow, the first one he's really had to absorb since launching his campaign in june. >> when we talked about this yesterday, the big question was, okay, what would he do? how would he react? will he be grateful in defeat and pivot, the answer was? >> well, what did we say? >> you say people change, and chuck said they don't. >> last night, trump put out this statement. he dictates this stuff. he refers to ted cruz as lying ted cruz. accuses the party, essentially, of being in cahoots with everybody to take it away from

him. the only way he becomes the nominee is if he makes nice with party bosses. what does he do? insults them and insinuates they're trying to steal it from him. >> not to steal your thunder but if you're donald trump and you've gotten to this lead in the delegates, you think you got there by being donald trump. >> that is the internal divide in the small circle of people around him. when they go to him and say -- and there are people close to him that would like to see him be more presidential, like to see him do more things like the apex speech where he read from the teleprompter or stood in front of the flags. they'd like to see more of that donald. i think the people that enable the other behavior are the people that listen to donald who says, i got this far by being me. >> andrea, let's bring you in here. chuck just laid something out dramatic. even though bernie sanders wins wisconsin, he gets ten delegates. if you're in the clinton campaign this morning, how are you feeling coming out of wisconsin? >> you should not be feeling as

good as they probably are feeling. he is just hammering away at her trustworthiness. the exit polls, she has got a real problem going forward. she's going to be a bruised nominee. she has to figure out how to get rid of sanders, and now she can't. he has the money. he has the will. he has the belief in himself now. he is not going to let up. this is becoming a this is becoming a really nasty campaign. it is a battle for new york. if she wins big in new york, maybe he re-thinks it. he now believes that he can persuade the super delegates and even the pledged delegates that she is so damaged, she should not be the front runner. >> was this a big night for ted cruz or the stop trump forces? i see northeastern states that wouldn't typically be cruz country. >> i think this was big for the stop trump forces. lindsey graham is probably the best perspective. a tweet says, congratulations, ted cruz. we've done it. we'll be able to deny donald trump a majority at the

convention. it wasn't, congratulations, ted cruz. you're on your way to becoming the next president of the united states. i think you'll see that in the next few days. stop trump, never trump people will come out of the closet. others have been quiet about it. that's what this wisconsin loss for trump could mean. >> what surprised me, a number in the exit polling, 32% of people in wisconsin consider themselves very angry at washington. those numbers have to be higher for donald trump to win. >> they have to be higher for bernie and for donald trump. what's interesting about last night, and lindsey graham is a great vessel because he lets it all hang out, he sat with us and said that it is more important to maintain the principles and the dignity and honor of the conservative movement with someone like ted cruz, who he acknowledged may lose in november, than to roll the dice with someone like donald trump when matters of national security are too big a deal. >> you didn't do the bumper sticker. >> i shared this rumor, lose with cruz is becoming a punch line at the end of these conversations.

temperatures today, anywhere from 10 to 15 degrees below average. then you look at thursday. front moves through. still chilly through the midwest. temperatures moderate a bit along the eastern coast. then we've got a high pressure system that'll start building in from the great lakes. temperatures on friday into saturday will stay anywhere from 10 to 30 degrees below average. that reinforcing cold air makes its way into the mid-atlantic states. the northeast, we do not see any warmup until mid next week. >> thank you very much. >> oh, boy. >> it's a crowd that became a mob. >> we can understand. they're freezing out there. al, thank you so much. battle lines are being drawn in the south over a new law in mississippi that allows certain businesses to deny services to same-sex couples. this on the heels of a controversial law in north carolina that limits bathroom options for transgender people. nbc's janet shamlian has the latest.

>> reaction has been quick and vocal here in mississippi. that's on both sides. this morning, there is concern and fear over a backlash that companies may end up pulling their business out of the state. >> reporter: with the stroke of his pen, the governor of mississippi setting in motion a giant controversy that's reverberating across the country this morning. opponents say the new law legalizes discrimination. the governor says it protects religious freedom. >> if a baker or photographer says, my deeply held religious views is i cannot participate in a religious ceremony like a wedding, the state cannot fine you. it cannot discriminate against someone because of their religious views. >> reporter: wisconsin government employees can refuse to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, but must find someone else in the office to do it.

the aclu called it a sad day for the state of mississippi. supporters say it's fair. >> there is a constitutional right to the freedom of religion and same-sex marriage. this bill strikes the balance. >> reporter: former nsync singer lance bass posted, entering mississippi, turn your clocks back 200 years. north carolina laws limit the rights of transgender people. a company decided to relocate its jobs elsewhere. >> i anticipate paypal will still provide their services and accept our consumer money in the state of north carolina. that's my response to that. >> north carolina is getting hit by a long list, growing every day, of cities and states that are banning publicly funded travel there. this is turning into a state by

state fight. in mississippi, the law goes into effect in july. matt and savannah, back to you. >> thank you. another story making headlines in the south. pressure growing this morning for alabama's governor to resign in the midst of a highly publicized scandal. an alabama lawmaker filed an impeachment resolution against governor robert bentley on tuesday. bentley faces allegations of an extramarital affair with a top aide. the governor admitted making inappropriate remarks to rebecca mason, but denies the two had a physical affair. in a statement, bentley said there are no grounds for impeachment, and i will vigorously defend myself and my administration from this political attack. to san francisco, where city leaders approved a family leave law on tuesday. it requires companies with 20 or more employees to provide six weeks of fully paid leave for new mothers and fathers. advocates say the issue is gaining momentum across the country, like the debate over a higher minimum wage.

smaller businesses argue the action in san francisco is another expensive mandate that they cannot afford. there is a red flag warning up for most of oklahoma today. dry, windy conditions are causing a pair of raging wildfires to spread. one fire outside of oklahoma city is fueled by fast-burning cedar trees. at least one home has been destroyed. another fire near the kansas border is threatening the small down of freedom. 300 residents are being urged to evacuate. the history made last night by the uconn women's basketball team. the huskies capped off another perfect season by winning an unprecedented fourth consecutive national championship. tamron has more on that. good morning. stand and applaud. >> two days of excitement, back to back. the men's championship game, of course, ended with the buzzer beater. the women's was a blowout. uconn dominated from the start to secure their place, as savannah said, in the record

good morning, everybody. happy wednesday. bright, shiny day. chilly temps on our plaza. it's wednesday, april 6th, 2016. we'll get out and wave back to those folks in a few minutes. >> that could be a scene from december. everyone with gluoves and hats on, things like that. we will go outside. let's get a check of today's headlines. the united airlines flight attendant who intentionally released the emergency chute on a plane at the airport in houston has been officially fired. investigators are still trying to figure out why the woman, identified as julia price, made such a hasty exit. our houston affiliate spoke to price's family, who said she wants to keep the matter private. ted cruz picked up a crucial

win in the wisconsin primary, topping donald trump by double digits. this is a victory that pushes republicans even closer to a contested convention. >> either before cleveland or at the convention in cleveland, together we will win a majority of the delegates and together we will beat hillary clinton in november. >> the trump campaign released a statement following his defeat claiming cruz is being used by republican party leaders in an attempt to, quote, steal the nomination from him. >> bernie sanders won on the democratic side, adding to his string of wins over hillary clinton. he still trails in the delegate count. peter alexander is back with a look at what we learned in wisconsin, in particular, some of the exit polls. >> yes. one of the most interesting things we saw from last night is the following -- is demonstrated what republicans have long said needed to happen to beat donald trump. donald trump got 35% last night. that earned him a big loss, of

course. for months with the field spread out, the 35% was good enough to win him six separate states. consolidating against him paid off. let's break it down. there is clear divisions within the republican party if ted cruz is the nominee this fall. two-thirds of wisconsin republicans say they would vote for him but almost a third said they would vote for clinton, hillary clinton, for a third party candidate or they would stay home all together. that number gets even bigger if trump is the nominee. 35% of republicans say they would not vote for trump. so much for turning the badger state blue to red this fall. for the democrats, bernie sanders may have -- his win may have said as much about clinton's weaknesses as it did about his own strengths. look at the number at the top. 82% of democratic primary voters listed honesty as a top -- excuse me. of the people that listed honesty, 82% voted for sanders.

labrie was acquitted last year in new hampshire of felony rape charges involving an underage classmate. >> guilty or not guilty? >> guilty. >> reporter: but he was found guilty of misdemeanor sexual assault, as well as a second charge of computer-related seduction. in a motion just filed, his lawyers essentially claim his trial defense team dropped the ball by only focusing on the sexual assault charges, not the computer-related charge. >> and not only is that a very serious charge, but it carries with it the sentence of him being registered as a sex offender. >> reporter: among other things, the motion also claims the defense did not request appropriate jury instructions. >> it's extremely unlikely that this argument is going to get owen labrie anywhere. ineffective assistance of counsel claims are common and very rarely granted by the court. >> reporter: nbc news reached out to labrie's trial attorneys for comment but didn't immediately hear back. the 20-year-old's case drew

the north bay, tri-valley and the south bay. after today, temperatures will cool off about 10 to 20 degrees for tomorrow and then there's rain in the forecast for friday. more details on that in about a half an hour. >> that's your latest weather. savannah? >> al, thanks. milk does the body good. we've heard that. which kind of milk should you be drinking? there is a new study that suggests full fat dairy may lower your risk of diabetes and obesity. dr. mehmet oz is here to help us make sense of it all. good morning. there's a couple of studies that talked about full fat milk that puts it in a better light. maybe it's a better choice. what's your take away? >> there are lots of experts and nutritional guidelines that argued for years we should be using the low fat dairy instead of whole fat. there's not a lot of proof for that. the studies do the opposite, saying maybe it's healthier to take the whole fat milk. this is a big movement happening. we have focused on specific nutrients instead of whole

foods. we need to shift back and say, is the whole food itself good for us? if so, let's consume it in that form. >> one of the studies said it lowered your risk of diabetes. the other said it helped with obesity if you drink full fat. >> the circulation study didn't just trust what you said but looked at the blood in your body and looked for the milk fats. people with whole fat had a lesser chance for diabetes. how is it possible? we're trying to do the right thing but the wrong thing is happening. maybe milk fat has a protective effect, for example, by waking the liver or muscles up to consume sugars effectively. maybe it changes the bacteria in our gut. we know the recommendation is to drink skim milk or fat free, but probably not a wise thing if you want to reduce diabetes. >> all in moderation? >> to drink milk is a personal decision. if you're going to eat a food, you're better off with whole

across from city hall. police say the same group hit city hall shortly after. tackling the housing shortage, hundreds of oakland residents filled the san jose city kahn sill meeting to demand action. that plan unanimously approved freezes rent for the next 90 days but doesn't apply to units built after 1983. renters say they have seen prices jump 13% in just the last year. we have more local news coming up for you in just a half hour.

the nastiness in the presidential race. dr. deborah, family physician and mother of four, has timely advi advice. dr. g., good morning. >> morning. >> i like talking to my kids about the relevant of politics, and i've found myself is staying away from the conversation because of what's been going on. >> it's a great opportunity. i don't know about in your house, but when i talk to my kids about behavior i don't admire, it's their behavior or their friends, which makes me angry and them defensive. this is a chance to talk to them about issues, behaviors, things important to us as a family. >> what age group are we talking about? we're not talking, again, about the nuts and bolts of politics. we're talking about the basics. what age should we start? >> preschool. >> preschoolers love the idea of picking and choice. i hope you'll take your preschoolers to the polls with you. >> what about the campaigns themselves? if they're in the room when coverage of campaign events -- >> and it's hard to avoid.

>> -- come on and it's hard to avoid, they hear the names used by the candidates, do we stop them in their tracks and say, let me explain what you're hearing? >> it's a great idea. kids like co-viewing with us and voicing their opinion. and say, for example, is that why you say insulting or lying is bad? it doesn't look good and now, i don't think that person would be great at their job. >> they'll say, mom and dad, you tell me not to use those exact words when i refer to my brother, sister or friends on the playground. how do these people get away with it? >> it's great to point out that bad behavior doesn't end on the playground or in the bedroom with your sibling. to say, now you tell me, what does that make you think about that person? do you admire that? >> there's one other step we should take. i don't want to go too far. but if your children are in the room watching the political news with you, they have seen actual violence at events. a guy gets punched, something

like that. where do you go about starting that discussion? >> i would ask my kids, and have asked my kids, if you were in that situation, how would you handle it? >> what would a 5, 6, 7-year-old say? >> usually, they'll give you back your own rules. oh, you shouldn't use your hands. an older kid, my 11 or 14-year-old, is likely to say, i think you can't go tell a teacher this case. do you have to push back? what do you do? >> without endorsing any candidate here, i do think parents can use john kasich's line. which is, i'm not going to take the low road to the highest office in the land. as a parent, i have used that and it works. >> i agree. listen, i think it is the silver lining of seeing things we don't like on the campaign trail. it's a great conversation starter at home. >> often times my kids come home when they're younger and say, i'm for x or y candidate. they have no idea why. >> i'm dressing up as them at

our own. >> mr. roker volunteered. he was the guinea pig, sleeping in a sleep lab. what happened? >> well, wait until you see what i learned. first, according to the national sleep foundation, the average adult requires 7 to 9 hours a night. what if you could get all the sleep you needed in a few short hours? some folks can. >> reporter: as the sunsets and the moon rises, most of the world shuts down. required by nature to recharge. then there are those like me. or matt. also wide awake at zero dark thirty, happily ticking to a different clock. >> what's your deal with sleep? >> i don't need it. in order to be a happy, functioning person, i need four hours of sleep. i have more energy than most people i know. >> reporter: always up and running when the rest of the world shuts down. matt thought there was something wrong with him until he heard

about scientists studying short sleepers. >> all the nature with short sleepers, they look like matt. they're very active. they're happy all the time. very energetic. very healthy. >> reporter: they only sleep four to five hours a night. that's it. turns out, our genes control how much sleep we need. >> we have found some mutations that make people short sleepers. >> reporter: after years of research, the doctor found a mutation in dna that allows people to sleep more efficiently. when she inserted it in mice, they started sleeping less, too. unfortunately, less than 1% of the pop yu unfortunately, less than 1% of the pop ylation has this mutation. >> i wasn't thinking abnormality, i was thinking superhero. >> reporter: for someone who only slept five or six hours, i

wondered, could i be a sleep elite or am i ignoring my exhaustion? i head to the sleep disorder center at new york presbyterian hospital. >> night. >> what we're going to see is what his sleep structure looks like. does he sleep like somebody who is sleep deprived? does he sleep very efficiently? does it look normal? >> i've always been a, quote, morning person. my mom said i didn't sleep much as a kid. >> are you sensitive to -- >> reporter: beyond the lens, a doctor records my sleep history and crunches the data to see how i measure up to other short sleepers. >> am i like every other american, am i sleep deprived? >> probably not. the information we got looked like your average is more like seven hours. what you do better than most people, probably, is you can bank sleep. you can make up for sleep on days you're not working. everybody can do that to some extent, but you probably do it better. >> wow, that's good to know.

>> reporter: scientists hope by studying short sleepers, they'll one day be able to help everybody else get a good night's sleep. for those ordinary humans -- >> a lot of people train themselves to sleep less in order to make time for other things. the problem is they don't realize they are paying the price with their health. each person should figure out what the optimum length of time is they need for sleep to be happy, healthy and smart. >> reporter: until then, rest assured, i'll man the fort while the rest of you go nighty night. >> experts admit they know so little about how we're wired for sleep. but each person has a unique sleep requirement. if you feel good after ten hours of sleep, that's how much you need to get, whether it's catching up from naps or go to bed early. you can't cheat the clock. >> what was the noise thing you were teasing about earlier? >> just goofing around. >> i'm glad you left that out.

>> let's take a look at our ingredient grid or panel here right now. we've got the basics. everything you'd expect except -- >> the meat. >> where's the beef or sausage? >> i know you're upset about this. we have squash, zucchini, fresh herbs, lasagna noodles, parmesan, mozzarella, sauce. >> if you want to put in meat, you can do that. >> totally, yeah. >> where do we start? >> start with the lasagna noodles. cook them to packaged instructions. except i do it a minute or two less. >> is that because they're going to cook further when you take them out? >> right. >> or because you need to work with them. >> they'll cook further. but cook them enough that you can work with them. you have to roll these up. we're making these lasagna rolls. >> all right. >> you can also substitute brown rice noodles if you want to go gluten free. whole wheat, take your pick. >> the folks are ready to big

in. i heard yums already, which is good. >> terrific. >> those are the noises i like to hear. >> perfect. >> what now? >> saute onions and garlic and add the zucchini and squash. these need to food only a couple minutes because you want them to release their natural water content so you don't have a watery lasagna. >> you can't put oil in that? >> a little oil in the pan. put some pepper in there. just salt and pepper it. season every step so you have a really good tasting lasagna. >> ends up looking like this. >> put them in a bowl, cool down, and add, like dr. oz said, have full fat ricotta. >> you could also go low fat. >> you could. stir that, matt. i'll add in the parmesan cheese for nice, salty flavor. >> full fat? >> yeah.

and the egg holds everything together. parsley, salt and pepper depose in. you can do broccoli and spinach or brown sausage, turkey and beef. >> now the sauce. >> it's a great summer sauce because you don't cook it. i pureed a ran of tomatoes. add basil and salt and pepper. mix that up. it's going to cook in the oven. super simple. now we're going to make our lan saga rollups. take your noodles. i put it in an assembly line. that's the filling. it goes into a zip-top bag. then cut off the end. >> looks like we cut it up top. >> we're missing our scissors. >> we're going to break that off. >> cut it with a knife. >> go ahead. >> cut the tip-off. >> using this like a pastry bag. >> squeeze it on there. you make a little assembly line.

you do all of them. then you tightly roll these up. just like that. they go into a pan you've put some of the sauce down. line these up. spoon some of the sauce on top. >> guys, how are we doing downstairs? >> this is so much easier than making a traditional lasagna. >> it's really easy. >> this goes back in the oven now. >> top it first with mozzarella and parmparmesan. 375 for 40 minutes until it's golden brown and bubbly. >> do you miss the meat? >> we have one with a little sausage. >> and one veggie. >> how would you compare the two? >> they're both delicious. >> can't go wrong. >> satisfying in different ways. very good. >> which was this one, the vegetable? >> that's vegetable. >> is this meat? >> that's meat. >> you can have a little bit of both. serve this with a salad, garlic bread and you have a great

magazine. it says women who inspire us, melissa mccarthy, adele, amy schumer and ashley graham. so schumer took to instagram saying, i think there's nothing wrong with being plus sized beautiful, healthy women. size 16 in america. go between a 6 and 8. "glamour" put me plus-size only without asking or letting me know and it doesn't feel right to me. that was the first -- warning shot. >> first salvo. >> when you go on twitter and ask followers what do you think? that pretty much means you're about to beehive. "glamour's" editor-in-chief responded in a series of tweets. we love amy schumer works never want to offend her. to be clear, never called her plus size. our 2015 cover story was included in the edition aimed at sizes 12 and up with the cover line women who inspire us because her longtime message of body positivity and talking back
