an update on the top stories. >> police are looking for a hit and run driver who killed another driver. investigators say a toyota sienna van clipped a toyota scion in redwood city. this happened just south of woodside road. the scion lost control and crashed into the center divide. that driver died and driver of the van never stopped. officers believe the hit and run driver was in a light brown 2000 toyota sienna similar to this one. san jose police have released new video of a 7-eleven robbery. they are hoping someone will recognize these two thieves. take a look. the men walked into the store six months ago on sixth street and grabbed several cases of peer and just walked out the door. when the cashier confronted them, the man in the black there threatened him with a knife. plus, pinpointing the homeless population in the south bay. a new map is helping relief workers coordinate their outreach using census data it

can pinpoint where homeless encampments are forming. daniel trujillo has more. >> the homeless have been using this park as a home for years. this is on the map put out by the health press along with dozens of encampments throughout the city of san jose. the map was intended to help relief workers reach out to the homeless here in the south bay and provides health-related advocacy here in the valley. census data and the map out encampment and point out where the encampments are popping up and the number of people in each site. several support groups that are using the map to do outreach. one is mercy mobile. right now the city of san jose is studying a proposal to create supervised site and convert buildings into affordable housing. the san jose diocese spent the last month opening the doors of its churches for the homeless. st. john opened its parking lot

the best of the treats. i want to say hi as i'm waving to you. @ cafe and use virtual reality headsets and eyeglasses to get in on the axz and you will not want to use virtual reality to enjoy food and reality that concession stands because there are new offerings here and a shrimp sandwich and other offerings such as a porcheeny doughnut which is some sort of mushroom fritter. of course, any time you throw in the word, you have the foodies clamoring to get a bite. also spent some time this week with the owner of the slice house talking what it is like to be on the other side of the counter as thousands and thousands of fans pour in and don't just want to watch baseball but have a good bite to eat. >> the amount of pizzas we produce here is insane. especially in a short amount of

time. when you go by our spot you'll see triple stacked brick ovens in there. three brick ovens on top of each other and just banging out pizza after pizza. >> so not just three brick ovens but three brick ovens that they brought over from italy. it is a true, authentic experience here at at&t park. again, new food offerings. we are going to talk to the vice president of marketing about all those gives away and we'll do that in the next half hour. but all clear, no lines here at the concession stand maybe that's because nobody is cooking anything just yet. i sure could use a hot dog and a beer right about now. sam and laura. >> never too early. but the thing is, you're first in line. >> your hot dogs and doughnuts, that's another thing. >> speaking of beer. >> what are you going to wash all that stuff down with? why not a new beer. but this year a new brew in the

arlittle bit. for the answer, how our weather will be on this great opening day. let's turn to anthony slaughter. he is live at willie mays plaza with what we can expect. >> you can see behind me we don't have fog, as you were mentioned. we don't have rain falling and we definitely don't have those temperatures like we saw yesterday. i mean, we are talking 80s and 90s. record breaking heat. in fact, that cool ocean breeze has returned and i've got on my fleece this morning because it's a little bit chilly out there. you'll notice the temperatures later on this afternoon are much more comfortable. much more tolerable, as well. 78 for san jose today and 77 for sunnyvale and in the 60s for san francisco today. around game time expect to see 60s with partly to mostly cloudy skies. it will be breezy later this afternoon at the coastline, as well. winds gusting anywhere from 20 to 30 miles per hour. across the north bay, the east bay and the triof the valley

and the giants are back in town this morning, this after a road trip in milwaukee where they won two out of three and now welcoming the boys back home. taking a live look at the infield right now at at&t park ahead of the giants home opener which is set for 1:35 this afternoon and, man, are we excited. >> they'll raise the tarps and you'll get to see underneath everything. >> safety first. fans sitting in the lower deck between home plate and the dug outs are no longer going to have a clear. >> the team is all about protection. "today in the bay" bob redell explains. >> reporter: the 2015 baseball season wasn't always to baseball goers. walloped fans in the stands.

>> there's our fan. she's okay. they'll take her out of the ballpark now. >> reporter: hospitalizing some, permanently injuring others. >> so important to create fan safety. >> reporter: while no one has been gravely injured by a foul ball at at&t park major league baseball strongly recommended all teams better protect fans. the giants have now extended the protective netting behind the batter and raise the nets from 20 to 25 feet. >> a lot of kids in their onesies months old and when a ball comes shooting back at you, you have those little ones, that could be dangerous. so, we think the netting is going to be a protective shield for people, but also not be intrusive at all in terms of the viewing of the game. >> reporter: team president and ceo larry bear says the new configuration has allowed the team to remove several of the support poles and the orzauntal leaving in its place the four cables that are much less intrusive.

owith what we can expect for the big game. >> yeah, good morning to you guys. in fact, waking up to chilly conditions out here this morning. nothing like what we saw yesterday. so cold i had to grab my fleece this morning and put it on and have my hands in my pockets. temperatures in the 50s bay area wide. a huge contrast from what we were just experiencing about 12 hours ago. start you off with your game day forecast as the giants take on the dodgers at 1:35. first pitch temperature close to 68 degrees and more clouds are expected today and it will be a little more muggy once you have the afternoon hours. definitely notice the humidity this afternoon. the rest of the bay area looking at temperatures like this. 73 for san mateo and pacifica and, again, a big contrast and our weather temperatures at least concerning those numbers. 76 in santa rosa later this afternoon and 75 in hayward and 75 for pleasanton.

mid-70s the general trend for our inland valleys. nothing like what we saw yesterday. we had clouds surging in from the south and that is what will impact our weather later ontop we'll stay mostly cloudy once we hit game town. showers in the forecast for tomorrow. so, here's your three-day outlook. getting you into the weekend, you'll notice friday showers across the south bay and stay mostly cloudy for saturday and sunday and more sunshine is expected from sunday, but you'll notice the big story here over the next couple of days is really all about the cool weather that we have not seen, at least this past week. it's been so much above average. nothing like that headed our over the next couple of days. in fact, setting the stage today for the giants home opener out here and we've seen a few folk trickling on in here and we have knbr has their morning show and over there at the pup and we have other folks getting ready to get the tarps off of the field or, well, they're already off and get some things ready

for the field later on. we'll talk to you guys in just a bit. but right now starting to see traffic pick up and, mike, how is it looking in the studio with your map. >> studio has no traffic because you guys are all out there. right here easy drive around the bay. i want to give a shout out to the golden gate, i'm sorry golden gate ferry and the giants fear ferry coming in from the north bay. kira said they did reinstate one of those ferries. you can buy your tickets online early. looking at oakland watching for heavier traffic past the coliseum because the a's and the warriors are playing today. this stretch of 880 starting at mid-day when the a's play all the way the evening traffic through the area and right now we look at your map and just park out both sides of the bay and san francisco for the giants and oakland for the a's and san jose, don't forget that. the sharks are playing the jets. no traffic to speak of. sharks versus jets, that's a legendary battle. >> legendary.

it is 5:23. we have a live look at at&t park this morning. the entire "today in the bay" team is live there now to welcome home the orange and black ahead of the giants home opener this afternoon. we're going to check back in with laura and sam at the top of the next half hour. so, we hope you stay tuned for all the fun. new this morning, a deadly motorcycle crash on highway 101 in san francisco. it happened just north of eastbound interstate 80 late last night. the motorcyclist died at the scene. no word yet on the cause. a north bay couple now has to look into renovating their home after a dump truck barrelled into their garage. this happened yesterday afternoon on lower crescent drive in sausalito. firefighters say the driver of the dump truck lost control

heading up a hill. the driver jumped out of his truck, which then slammed into the home's detached garage. >> tried to push it down the hill and luckily the garage resisted. >> the truck driver suffered a broken. no one else was hurt. the rest of the home was left undamaged and the driver was assisting a pg&e crew in that neighborhood. san jose police have released new video of a 7-eleven robbery and they hope someone will recognize these two thieves. take a look at them. police say two men walk under to the store on sixth street and grabbed several cases of beer and just walked out the door. this happened six months ago. when the cashier confronted them, the man in the black there threatened him with a knife. here's another look at the two robbers. if you have any information, call police.

this morning at at&t park they will return a stolen scooter to the make a wish foundation. officers were able to arrest jacues manns in connection with the burglary. a surveillance camera captured the burglars holding one of the stolen items, the scooter, donated by giants star hunter pence. police were able to recover that missing scooter on tuesday. a shooting victim has died who sources say petrov has dropped off at a hospital. petrov is the man at the center of a federal gun investigation. the shooting that led to his friend's death happened friday before a federal raid in san francisco's visitation valley. sources tell nbc bay area that the feds were conducting some sort of gun investigation involving petrov and they did arrest him after finding a weapon. he was seen on camera being beaten by alameda county

deputies back in november following a police chees. chase. a symbolic move that sends a message. a travel ban to mississippi. this stems from a controversial anti-gay law signed there. mayor ed lee says san francisco's taxers were not subsidized hate and bigotry against any personal group. san francisco is joining dozens of other states and businesses across the u.s. banning nonessential travel to mississippi, as well as north carolina, which also passed a similar law. hundreds have gathered at mississippi state capital in otests of the law, which allows businesses to refuse services to gay couples on religious grounds. at 5:6. coming up, hundreds of professors could soon be on strike. the last-minute negotiations to keep classes open at all cal state universities. kira, laura and i are live from a trx st and park.

about anyone releases from custody. that is except under limited circumstances. the plan being debated today by supervisors would go beyond the city's current law. the current law is currently under fire following last year's deadly shooting of kate steinle off the embarcadero. immigration agents wanted to deport that suspect. but the san francisco sheriff's department at the time chose not to identify the federal government when they had relieved lopez sanchez. san jose police have released new video of a 7-eleven robbery and they hope someone will recognize these thieves. police say the men walked in and grabbed several cases of beer and walked out the door. this happened several months ago. the man in black there threatened him with a knife. we have another look at the two robbers. if you have any information, you're asked to contact police. this morning at at&t park. san francisco mayor greg lee

will return a stolen. a surveillance camera captured the burglars holding one of the stolen items we see there. the scooter. it had been donated by hunter pence. police recovered the missing scooter on tuesday. there is a glimmer of hope this morning that a strike by cal state university teachers can be avoided. teachers plan to walk off the job next wednesday in the first of five days of strikes. but yesterday the university and the union representing all 23 campuses entered into a closed door, 48-hour high-negotiation period. the hope is a deal could be reached by tomorrow. a mystery now volving a beloved sign at yosemite national park. there is now a $1,000 reward for information about this missing ahwhanee hotel sign.

and decided instead to pursue a career in baseball. >> last but definitely not least, the extensive signing of the off season. starting pitcher johnny cueto. fresh off the world series title winning the championship with the kansas city royals last season. he is from the dominican republic and spent the rest of his career with the reds. >> one baseball tradition you're not going to be seeing at at&t park this year is dipping or chewless, smokeless chewing tobacco. a new law is in effect right now that bans everyone, that includes all the players from using it at the stadium. if a player violates that law the first time, it's 100 bucks and that will increase with each violation. the most a player can be fined is $500. and according to the san jose mercury news, 15 of 25 giants players don't support that law. however, 21 of them said that they're going to comply with it. >> one tradition that will be sticking around is the giving

all morning on social media. are you guys cold right now? this as we take a live look at the ballpark. >> you know what is amazing, this is the first year being out here. we come out every single year and i'm not wearing a jacket or a coat. >> yes, a little humid and muggy this morning and then it did dip a little bit, but you're moving forward coatless. stronger than me. a live look right now inside the park and talk to our man anthony slaughter who is outside of the park. anthony, we're looking at some baseball weather here. everyone loosening up and you have your coat on, man. >> yeah, i had to grab my fleece this morning because it is a little chilly. a little different from what we saw yesterday. nothing like that coming our way today. we're not talking any 0s or 9d for the high temperatures. still above average for our inland locations today. talking mid-70s for places like san jose, even in the inland locations and the peninsula we'll see places in the mid-70s.

san francisco today going to stay cool with that onshore wind that has returned. so, we're only expecting mid up toer upper 60s by game time. the tri-valley and east bay we're expecting temperatures to range from low 70s to mid-70s today. about a 20 degree drop in some locations and like pacifica yesterday. got up to 96 degrees and today back into the 60s and i think that is more of the general tone of our weather today and as we into the weekend, 60s become the story and we've got rain in the forecast. as soon as tonight. we'll go over that coming up and a full report about 15 minutes. let's toss things over to mike right now and see how it ismo moving on those roads. >> the first burst. what you expect all around the bay and expected schedule. look at your map and the south bay. and just one section north of 680 and kick back about an hour

america san francisco giants playing over the years. our hometown airline has been super supportive of our hometown team. remember they put a beard on the front of one of their airplanes. now word from virgin's founder that he might bring the brand back. virgin america, as you know, was sold to alaska airlines. it may take more than a year for the deal to be approved. once it is, we expect virgin to disappear. but, if and when that happens branson told "travel magazine" he would consider starting a new airline in the united states with the virgin brand. the article came out as, once again, named virgin america as the best airline in the united states which it has been since 2008. now, branson was a minority owner in virgin america. american law says foreigners cannot control domestic airlines. br branson said that meant he was able to stop the steal of virgin america and how true is that,

and welcome back as that banner said, it is the giants home opener as we give you a sneak peek inside of at&t park right now. you may not recognize his face yet, but you will soon. here is jeff samardzija on what he hopes to bring to the giants organization. >> the only thing important is winning in october. everything i'll do from what i can tell this team does is in preparation for that. i want to help out any way i can and that's the end all, be all. but i have to get there first. >> baseball wasn't the only sport for samardija growing up. he had a chance to play in the nfl. but he announced he would forego the draft to play baseball. he spent some times with the a's and most recently the chicago white sox. his nickname is the shark
