damian trujillo: hello and welcome to "comunidad del valle." i'm damian trujillo, and today on our show, another tribute to the talented singer, selena. plus, a unique program for mission girls on your "comunidad del valle." male announcer: nbc bay area presents "comunidad del valle" with damian trujillo. damian: we begin today with some very exciting things happening at the san jose public library system. with me on "comunidad del valle" are the marketing gurus here at the library, elizabeth castañeda and nancy macias here on our show. welcome to the show. both: thank you. damian: we're approaching the summer months, so i guess there's a lot of information to share, but you have a grand opening of your newest library now. elizabeth castañeda: yes, we're gonna be opening up our newest library, village square branch, which is located in the evergreen area of san jose. the grand opening's held on next saturday, april 16th at 11

o'clock, and we'll have the mayor, vice mayor rose herrera, and also the city librarian and other city officials there celebrating with the community. damian: you know, nancy, when i go to the libraries to do news reports or what not, well, at first i was shocked and surprised at the amount of people that still go to the library. i thought everybody was on their phones, on their laptops at home, but it's still getting a lot of use. nancy macias: yes, i think the thing with the library nowadays, it's not the traditional libraries that a lot of people are used to seeing. damian: where you, shh, whisper and-- nancy: yeah, it's not. there's a lot going on, whether it's dance practice, to going and using computers, we have advanced technology people can take advantage of. and so, that's the cool thing about the san jose public libraries. damian: all right, and there's something also special about the grand opening that you have, because you were talking about bond money and how this is the last of that bond money that's been used. elizabeth: so, we--in 2000, the voters passed a bond measure that basically funded 14 new--or renovated 14 branches in our san

jose library system, and also added 6 new additional branches to communities that didn't already have branches. so, it was--you know, now we reach more communities, we're able to provide more services to those communities, we're closer to schools where children have access to their libraries during after school hours, so--and just new collection and books that people can request and check out. damian: and national library week is happening. i mean, a lot of activities? elizabeth: yeah, and so, basically we're inviting everybody to visit their libraries, go to a different library. don't go to your local branch, you know? discover something new. and i would encourage people to pick up the "sjpl bound" booklet, which basically kind of gives 'em an overview of all the activities that are happening at all our branches, let them know about services that people can take advantage of. and it's not only services that are offered in english, but we also offer a lot of programs in vietnamese and in spanish that we encourage people to share with others that they can take

advantage of these events at their libraries. damian: good, now, nancy, we are approaching the summer months, and again, you would think that this is when there's less traffic at the library system because the kids are out playing, but no, you have a lot of programs throughout the summer to make sure the kids are engaged, reading, and stay up to par with their school activities. nancy: there's so much going on this summer, damian. i think that's gonna be for a different show. but because there's so much going on, it's very exciting. we have a new teen center opening up at the king library. we have a summer lunch program children can go to. it speaks for itself, summer lunch, to go have lunch. that's gonna be open specific libraries. there's a summer reading challenge that's very exciting. and so, yeah, there's definitely a lot going on. damian: yeah, keep those kids engaged, right? elizabeth: yeah, we're gonna keep them engaged, but we're also, in addition to all the awesome new programs that we're gonna be opening up in the summer, we're also going to open up a new center at the king library. it's called sjpl works and it connects people

to business resources. if somebody wanted to start a new business, like, they can go there and get information and make the connections they need to make to make that dream a reality. we'll also have a workforce center there were people can obtain information on how to create their resumes, how to improve, like, their interviewing skills, how to look for a job. and so--and hopefully that develops into a career. so, there's just a lot of exciting things that are happening in our library system. and just, you know, getting their library card just to access a lot of those resources online, but you don't necessarily need a library card to attend a program. so, those programs are available and free to everybody, and a lot of them are very valuable programs that local organizations, like, they invest their time and their services to come out and offer these in the community so that people don't necessarily need to go to their spaces. like, they can go to their public library, walk over, take their bike, take vta, whatever, and take advantage of these services. so, it's gonna be a really exciting year this year.

with me here on "comunidad del valle," all the way from san fran, are susana rojas, the director of mission girls services, and eliseana hernandez is an 8th grader in a mission, right? eliseana hernandez: yes. damian: all right, welcome to the show. both: thank you. damian: well, tell us, first of all, about mission girls services. what does it do and who does it help? susana rojas: well, mission girls is a program that empowers young women to achieve academically and to become agents of change in the community. we've been in the mission community for about 28 years. we're part of mission neighborhood centers. we're located right on 24th and harrison. damian: that's it, right there. susana: right there. you can find us right at the corner with the big, bright murals. and what we do, really, is we just take girls that are in the community and help them find their talents, help them find

their voice, and share it with the world. damian: what difference do you think it has made for you, eliseana? how long have you been with the program and what difference do you think it's made? eliseana hernandez: i've been with the program for 3 years now, and it's really opened many doors for me. like, this project has opened so much things for me. i never thought i could ever sing or be in a video before, and i think that it just really empowered me as a person and changed me. damian: that's great. well, we're gonna show you most of that video in just a few minutes. it's a fascinating video. and the girls wrote the lyrics, right? susana: yes, so, actually, one of our girls, the youngest one of the girls in the project, she was listening to one of the songs of a very popular hip hop artist, and she was looking at the video, and she was just appalled of what the video showed. and she asked me, "well, doesn't she know she's a woman too?" and i said, "you're right." so then, from there, we started working with the girls. we asked them if they wanted to do it. they jumped on it and then they started writing what they truly

felt they had to deal with every day when they see the media and what these songs, popular songs, are telling them that who they need to be. damian: do you think--how do you think it's changing the lives of your peers, other 8th graders there in the mission district? eliseana: i think that it's changed their mindsets on thinking of, like, how women are supposed to look and how they're always supposed to dress. like, a lot of the girls these days, they always think they have to look pretty for everyone else, but truly inside sometimes they feel like, "i'm not worth it," like, "i'm not worth being a part of society," and that's why they have to dress up. damian: and so, i'm assuming that in the process, you're teaching self-esteem and other tools that these girls can use and take onto the world. susana: right, we're hoping that we're teaching them and instilling in them a sense of self-worth that goes beyond your outside look. it's really about who you are, what you think, and what you have to offer besides what you're wearing, how your

curves look, or how short your skirt is. it's more about how your brain operates and how big your heart is. damian: do you think--i'll use this. do you think they walk in using their inside voices, and then a year later, they're using their outside voices 'cause they're more extroverted at that point? susana: correct, i think that they come in speaking in a certain way and they leave being able to tell their story and being able to share their thoughts in a different way. damian: okay, well, we're gonna show that video in a bit, eliseana. tell us about the lyrics and what prompted that language, and that writing, and what not. eliseana: well, during the process of writing, there was many rough drafts, and rewriting, and trying to figure out what goes together. i wrote, like--i wrote paragraphs, and paragraphs, and paragraphs of things, and i only came out with, like, a few words for the hook. and i was like, "oh my god, i wrote so much

and this is what comes out?" well, i mean, it's good anyways, but there was just a lot of writing to what was happening and-- damian: who do you want to watch this video and to pay attention? who do you want to do that and why? eliseana: i want young girls to see this video and feel that they can be confident--like, they could be confident in themselves no matter what they do. and you don't have to be more than you--like, you don't have to be more than someone else tells you to be. damian: you can be yourself. eliseana: yeah, you can be yourself. damian: how proud are you of the talent that is next to you right now? susana: i'm very, very proud of these girls. eliseana has--she actually was one of the girls that came in with an inside voice, and now she is out there, she's being able to express herself. obviously she gets nervous, obviously she gets shy, but now she's not afraid to speak her mind. damian: that's great.

the sonido clash collective. with me on "comunidad del valle" are melinda chacon and roman dominguez on our show. now, i think you think you're the biggest selena fan.

i have two girls at home who think they are. there's about 80 people here in the telemundo studio who think they are. tell us about this fascination with selena. melinda chacon: i grew up listening to selena. i have all the selena y los dinos cassette tapes. damian: cassette tapes! melinda: when we were little, my dad took us to "the johnny canales show." we have family in harlingen and in brownsville, so we grew up on tejano music. i grew up on tejano music. so, this tribute holds a special place in my heart. damian: yeah, and you went all out. you're wearing a t-shirt y todo. roman dominguez: yeah, i wore this shirt made by sí señorita. this is our 2015 version. this year, the design is made by sam rodriguez from san jose, and he's an artist. damian: okay. roman: it's gonna sell out. damian: are you on to selena too? roman: yeah, i like selena also. i mean, i'm not, like, you know-- damian: not like melinda? roman: not like melinda, but i do remember being in elementary, and i remember this little girl came in. i think it was, like, 4th grade, and she was crying, and she was

like, "oh, selena just died," and the whole class just started crying. i was like, "whoa." but i do like what she represents. you know, she's like a--she makes latino-mexican regional music, tejano music, but she also transcends. she also, you know, made different types. you know, she made "techno cumbia," she made some freestyle type music, and yeah, that's kinda like what our parties are about, sonido clash. at our parties, we bring different elements of different sounds. damian: and talk about this tribute itself, 'cause i saw the video that we're gonna play, actually, at the end of the show, and people dress up as her, and they sing like her, y todo. melinda: people dress up. it's the second annual. we have a selena look alike contest. last year, we had a drag queen selena impersonator, and she was amazing, amazing, amazing. so, there's a lot to look forward to. we have a lot of vendors that sell selena memorabilia.

we have food vendors. it's just--it's definitely an event. it's more than just a party. we throw events and we take great pride. damian: all right, well, tell us about sonido clash. roman: well, sonido clash is a collective. we've been around since 2009 and we're a collective of promoters, artists, community activists from san jose, and we throw this party where we try to make it into an experience. and i think in san jose, there's all these nightclubs that do, like, you know, top 40, mainstream music, but i think we try to bring another side to it where we do, like, latina alternativo. and so, we play different types of music where we combine, you know, cumbia and hip hop. we combine--we also put some rock en español. we'll put some freestyle. we'll even sometimes play some oldies. we play everything. damian: all right, and the selena tribute, it's the second annual, but it sounds like,

from the reaction that you got last year, it sounds like this is gonna be something that's here to stay. melinda: absolutely, and we're actually close to selling out, so if you haven't purchased your tickets, you should get online right away. there will be limited tickets available at the door, but it's selling out quickly. damian: and the dj's playing selena music throughout, or they're performing, actually, some of the participants, or what actually happens? melinda: it's djs throughout the night. roman: and we also have a band from l.a. that they do surf rock, psychedelic cumbia, and they're gonna do, like, a 20-minute set of just selena tracks. we have a dj that we're bringing in from texas. her name is dj gracie chavez, and she has a night out in houston that's kinda like sonido clash where we play. and we're flying her out to come and play for us, you know, give us some texas, you know, what they do. damian: quintara here, is in our studio. he's a promoter and he brought the in the mission girls for us. and i mean, he's having his own también, selena tribute with live bands y todo.

i mean, what's the big deal? melinda: she's amazing. you know, i think, for us, for me personally, i just wanna keep her legacy alive, what she stood for. she was a true artist and i think she's an inspiration to young girls. you know, you have two daughters and they're obviously huge selena fans. if i had a daughter, she'd be cumbia-ing along with me right there too. damian: all right, well, it's the annual selena tribute, now happening in san jose. what's the venue that you're having this at this year? roman: back bar sofa on market. damian: all right, there is actually the web address for sonidaclash.com. log on. april 16th, so it's right around the corner. head on out there and wear your favorite selena outfit. the purple one, i guess. is that everybody's favorite? melinda: the purple one. don't forget your eyelashes, your nails. damian: ha ha ha ha. melinda: bring it on, damian. damian: all right. any final thoughts, melinda? melinda: come out, enjoy it with us. bring your dancing shoes. you're gonna have a good time. you're gonna have a really good time. damian: same thing, any final thoughts?
