"today in the bay" starts right now. good monday morning to you. hope you had a great weekend. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. that win making it a nice weekend. two days of rain, enough to almost match our monthly averages. c kari is following the latest with her microclimate forecast. >> the rain comes to an end today and we'll get some sunshine this afternoon as we take a look outside, still some clouds across the bay area. temperatures holding steady right in the mid-50s and highs today in the mid-60s to upper 60s in some spots like the south bay and the north bay with partly cloudy skies and some breezy winds. overall, very nice. we'll have this weather holding for a couple of days and there's more rain in the forecast. so, i'll detail that and we'll look ahead to the weekend coming up in just a few minutes. back to you, laura. at 6:01. you know your commute is shaping up around the bay you see there,

but we are still tracking that deadly crash we told you about in los gatos. at the bottom of your screen this morning. it is closing the connector from southbound highway 85 to northbound highway 17. in the meantime, more slowing for 80 through fremont this morning. there night be a crash near thornton judging from the slowing we're noticing here. we'll check back in just moments. meantime, an update to breaking news we have been following since we first came onair at 4:30 this morning. a deadly hit and run on the peninsula. right now investigators have the area near skyline boulevard shut down in san bruno while they continue to comb for evidence on the road. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang live at the scene this morning. steph, any word on a suspect? >>, laura and sam, no word yet on exactly who police are looking for. we have learned from police some good news that they did have some witnesses around here at the time. now, it's closed here up about three quarters of a mile. you can see some lights up there

and that is just a couple blocks east of skyline college and the southbound lanes to be closed for three to four more hours for this investigation that's still going on and northbound lanes, though, the good news could open very soon. within the hour, we're told. we also learned that the coroner's office arrived in the hour. san bruno have had their specialized traffic investigators working on this hit and run case with help from other agencies. we know someone reported this fatal hit and run around 1:40 this morning when police and firefighters arrive, they found someone already on the ground here in the southbound lane. we also saw people who appeared to be family arrive and speak with police officers. now, investigators say they do have leads they're working on, but they need help from anyone who might have been around or might know something. >> it's a hit and run. we do have a couple witnesses to the event and we're encouraging any members of the public with any information to please come forward and contact san bruno police department. >> back here live, again, you're looking at the scene of this hit and run that happened around 1:40 this morning.

san bruno police also saying, you know, skyland boulevard does get very busy, especially the southbound lanes. again, hoping that will open in the next three to four hours. but definitely going to be an impact. you might want to take 280 or other areas roads. if you can, we'll be here and keep you posted with what we learn. live here in san bruno, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." a search for a missi missing-year-old continues in san francisco. the little girl's mother was found dead on friday. 32-year-old nicole and her daughter were declared missing on april 1st. nicole's body found last week in mclaren park in san francisco. arianna is still missing. >> i want to believe she's okay. i want to believe that whoever she's with, hopefully, nothing has happened to her. no one has hurt her. just, you know, that i want to believe and hope that she's okay. >> investigators have now expanded their search for the little girl to fresno and

southern california. more fallout this morning for uc berkeley. two more students set to announce sexual harassment complaints against a professor there later today. the students are reportedly going to reveal an incident involving a professor in the south and southeast asian studies department. those students claim the university failed to intervene and discipline that teacher. today's news conference comes just a week after the university's assistant basketball coach yann hufnagel resigned. it is 6:05. a shooting investigation near the san jose state university campus is now a homicide investigation. we brought you the story as breaking news on friday morning. police say the man shot late thursday night died in the hospital. witnesses say gunfire broke out as several people were eating at a taco truck on east william and south tenth street. about a block afrom the san jose state university campus. so far no arrests so far and police have not released a motive. laura, also a deadly weekend in oakland. three people killed in three

separate shootings. all of those shootings occurring within 24 hours of each other. the first happened on saturday morning and the other two taking place on sunday. police have not identified any of the victims and they have not said if any of those shootings are reed. also in oakland, close call at the oakland international airport. a small plane had its landing gear collapse as it was touching yesterday morning. look at that scene. the pilot did manage to keep control and somehow safely landed the aircraft without any injure. airport workers managed to eventually tow the plane off the runway speaking of oakland chasing history there. the warriors one win away from being all by themselves that top of the nba record books. the warriors would break the record for most wins in an nba season. >> laura, last night the w beating the spurs in san antonio no less. 92-8 92-86. tie sh chicago bulls record of

colorado will be discussing today. vo state law allows students who need medical marijuana to use edible pot at public schools, as long as the school district agrees. but so far -- none havgi need medical marijuana to use at public schools as long as the school district agrees. now patient advocates are pushing a bill to require school nurses or parents to administer the medical pot. a state house committee is voting today whether toed a vns the bill. laura, a new study finds undocumented immigrant children in four different states not getting access to education.

the georgetown university law found that rules and red tape are creating extended delays for undocumented children in the states of texas, new york, florida and north carolina. some of the kids are staying out of school entirely. the u.s. requires all children attend school low the eighth grade whether they're legal residents or not. happening today, a formerer league baseball scouting director will learn if he'll go to prison for hacking into another team's database. worked for the st. louis cardinals. last year he pledd pleaded guil belonging to the houston astros. he obtained confidential information with the team's stats and scouting report. washington is waiting to see if the new proposed law that would crack down on apple and other silicon valley companies force them to help out the fbi. >> scott mcgrew a bit of mystery surrounding this bill. you may have a first look at it. >> i may. the bill was leaked, sam. we're not sure if the leak was

delivered or not. for this matter, if this is, indeed, authentic. senator feinstein's office won't confirm to reporters that it's real, but they won't say it isn't either. so, this may be a balloon to see how tech leaders react. senator feinstein has been very clearly on the side of the fbi in the fight over the cell phone encryption. in an editorial to "time magazine" apple's refusal to lock the phone used by the san bernardino shooter puts americans at risk. only you and the receiver can read it and apple can't at all and no one else can. that would change under this proposed law. apple would be required to change its system. twitter named two new people to its board of directors. one is a top executive at pepsi and the other a british entrepreneur that does a lot of tweeting. that is actually really unusual. twitter directors generally don't use twitter.

let's go to the scoreboard, shall we? the new board member that does a lot of tweeting. she tweets all the time. hugh johnston the other new board member has tweeted twice. twice. and both of those tweets were after he was hired to the board. marjorie scardino has tweeted a grand total of 14 times or once every 2.5 months. this deuz not make them other bad business talents but you would think people in charge of twitter would have to use twitter. you don't have to be a pilot to serve on the board of american airlines but helpful if maybe once in your life you had been on a plane. >> just to have that perspective. >> wasn't there an executive at twitter who one time sent out a direct message and he sent out a

drop in on the east bay now. 54 grees in alamo, castro valley 53 degrees and fremont starts out the morning at 54 degrees. 55 in the south bay and as we go hour by hour in san francisco, we'll still have the clouds through at least 10:00 or 11:00 this morning and then as it clears out we make it into the low 60s. temperature in the mission district 52 grees and we will see a couple of spots making it up to 63. and then it dropsack down into the mid-50s by tonight as those clouds will go right back in. add least we don't have to deal with the rain. up to 67 degrees in los gatos and palo alto. also 66 in oakland and san ramon 67 degrees. seven-day forecast at the bottom of your screen. we'll see your temperatures hold steady and we will have some rain into late wednesday night for the north bay and thursday morning for the rest bay area. all because of this area of low

pressure. a very weak storm system that will bring some scattered showers and some breezy winds. once the rain moves out by thursday afternoon. the winds rushing in from the north. and our temperatures warm up in time for the weekend. rainfall totals just to be about 0.1 for most of us and maybe closer to 0.25 in parts of the north bay. a look at that weekend forecast after the rain clears on thursday it will still be nice on friday and then saturday look at how those temperatures ramp up. for the south bay up to 78 degrees and in the tri-valley a high of 77. 70 in the north bay. so t will definitely feel like springtime this weekend as you're trapped inside this last weekend. this weekend coming up it will be nice to make some beach plans. let's send it back to you, laura. >> what a turn around. we'll look forward to that. well, what about that monday morning commute. most of it is shaping up as we would expect. key spots we're watching this morning. an update in fremont. all lanes now cleared of

monday morning moving on to decision 16. the latest ap poll finds what many other polls seem to indicate about the race for president. when it comes to issues, hillary clinton has a big edge over donald trump. asked which would be the best at "making america great" that is the slogan being used by the trump campaign. clinton is also the preferred candidate on issues ranging from immigration to health care. presidential candidates are now focused on new york just over a week away but ted cruz shifting his attention right here to our gaeld golden state. >> trailing cruz and kasich in the polls right now. tracie potts joining us live from washington, d.c. crews going to california to try to collect delegates there. >> yeah, he'll be down in san diego and orange county in southern california today trying to focus ahead to the next big state. in new york right now the polls are averaging a 35-point deficit for ted cruz.

that means he is number three behind john kasich. so, while all the other candidates are in new york, cruz is going to be spending more time in california. trying to make up that deficit and win delegates in another big state as this thing goes down to the wire. meantime we have donald trump saying that things are not fair in some states like colorado where cruz has now picked up all of the delegates through that state's conventions and in their districts. then donald trump says that process is stacked against him. but, actually, when nbc looked at it. when you look at raw votes so far, donald trump actually has more delegates percentage wise than he got in terms of raw votes. so, we're watching that, as well as the democrats who will be debating in new york on thursday. >> maybe he's not getting such a sour deal after all. tracie potts reporting live from washington, thank you. growing concern in wine country. the invasive test that could damage the grapes.

morning. we're waking up dry here after a full weekend of rain. i'm sam brock. >> that's right. i'm laura garcia-cannon. time to dry out a little bit. kids inside all weekend we need to get out there and let them play. >> my son just about went crazy over the weekend being stuck inside. but today will be the day you can let the kids out and enjoy some sunshine and kids on spring break and the nice weather returning just in time. we will have some clouds starting out the day, 55 degrees now in the east bay, but heading up to 66 degrees. nice and comfortable and seasonable temperatures for the beginning to middle of april. and 67 for the north bay. we will have some clearing today and the next couple of days as we get some sunshine and then the rain returns. i'll let you know that happens coming up in the next microclimate forecast. let's check in with the morning commute. >> looking at that monday morning commute. you can see the problems for

drivers actually coming out on the nimitz this morning. southbound 880 recovering from union city to fremont. that earlier crash at stevenson. just past that we have reports of a trailer stuck in the roadway. no surprises, though, towards the bay bridge so far. laura, we have an update now to provide on breaking news we have been following since we first came onair at 4:30 this morning. a fatal hit and run on the peninsula and right now investigators have that area shut down while they comb the road for evidence. >> stephanie chuang live at the scene this morning as she has been gathering information. any word on the suspect out there, steph. >> yeah, unfortunately, no, laura and sam. police say they have leads they're working on and information from people who are in the area around 1:40 this morning when it happened and no arrests so far. the good news the northbound lanes should be reopening in 15, 30 minutes. this is up between that lane to about college or berkshire drive. this is a couple blocks east of skyline college where you see

those lights. the southbound lanes, though, which carry the load of the morning commute here. they are expected to stay closed for three or so more hours. that will impact your morning commute. the coroner's office got here an hour to an hour and a half ago while san bruno police have had their specialized traffic investigators working on the hit and run case. investigators say while they do have leads, they still need some help. >> it's a hit and run. we do have a couple witnesses to the event and we're encouraging any members of the public with any information to please come forward and contact the san bruno police department. >> so, again, the investigation continues. this southbound lane, again, expected to be closed for about three hours or so still here on skyline boulevard and you may want to take alternate routes this morning. stephanie chuang "today in the bay." the search is on for a father who left his son behind after a car crash in santa rosa. the press democrat reports that

the crash happened on yesterday afternoon near farmers lane. the man lost control of his car and he drove into oncoming traffic and then struck another vehicle. the man fled the scene leaving his son in a car behind. his son suffered minor injuries. no one in the other vehicle was hurt. >> wow. okay. well, east bay family this morning outraged. one of the men convicted in the death of their son out of prison after six years. former governor arnold schwarzenegger commuted the man's sentence. esteban nunez was released yesterday and supposed to be serving a 16-year long sentence for killing luis santos back in 2008. his father is the former speaker of the state assembly and also a friend of schwarzenegger's. the victim's parents from lafayette says justice in this case was not served. >> not what crime you commit, who do you know?

what access do you have to people in high places? >> the victim's family sued to overturn that sehortened sentene but lost their case. several students are expected to announce sexual harassment complaints against a professor there. >> chuck coppola is live on the campus this morning. this is the latest incident in just the past few months alone for the school. >> the latest wrinkle in this allegations of sexual harassment are about to get a closer look at state regulators. the state department of fair housing and housi housing and employment are about to get involved. planned a news conference this morning to announce the filing of the complaint with the state against professor of south and southeast asian studies blake wentworth. t "the guardian" newspaper reports that wentworth made unwelcomed

sexual advances s to students faced no disciplinary measures and remains on the job. this comes during a series of sexual harassment allegations. the men's assistant basketball coach yann hufnagel resigned along with the dean of the high school and university records show that there have been 17 reports of sexual harassment since 2011. seven complaints by students. now, reportedly professor wentworth denies the allegations against him calling ethem bathe baseilous and unjust. an update now on a car crash in pleasanton that knocked power to hundreds. parts will be closed until at least noon today. police have been out there after a car crashed into a utility poll about 9:30 last night. once again, traffic closed on vineyard in both directions to

luby hill boulevard. laura, acceptance week begins today at windimer ranch middle school in san ramon. the week has made some parents very upset. they say the lessons go against their religious beliefs after their complaints, some changes were made and students are now allowed to opt out of those lessons. a student leadership group created the curriculum and many students there support it. helping tenants who will take center stage in san mateo today. consider an emergency ordinance. calls for landlord to pay tenants expense. tonight's meeting is at 6:00 at san mateo city hall. at 6:36. a past to some wine growers. new concerns in wine country about an invasive pest can potentially damage grape crops. inspectors say they found eggs belonging to the glassy winged sharper. they discovered it on a tree

delivered by a southern california nursery. other egg masses were also found. the nursery right now is under investigation and this is actually the second time this year inspectors have found eggs in a shipment of plants from southern california. 6:37. bison will soon be on the move to the oakland zoo. >> get this, even more bison. the zoo is currently undergoing a massive expansion that will double its size and include the new trail exhibit. once that exhibit opens, the zoo will take in 20 bison calves that were bred in montana. i say more because the zoo already has five bison which you can own really only see when you take the sky ride chair lift. good day to head to the zoop. we'll dry out a little bit, the animals, as well. kari has a look at our monday morning forecast. >> we're taking a break from the rain for now. still some cloudy skies left behind. let's take a live look now at san jose. starting out no need for the umbrella today or the rain boots. and looking back at the weekend

and some of those rainfall totals. in san francisco, as well as san rafael and napa. about 0.5. concord had a little over inch of rain and oakland more than 0.75. livermore, fremont and morgan hill and we very close in mountain view and san jose. that amount of rain was equal to or close to what we should have during the entire month of april. so, it was a nice soaker and as we head out this morning, it is in the mid- 50 dz. still with cloudy skies and high temperatures today heading into the mid to upper 60s with a few spots hitting 70 degrees like fairfield. i'll show you the rest of the mic microclimate forecast as we get more dry weather and then some rain for the middle of the week. that's coming up in less than ten minutes. let's get a look at what's happening on the roadways with laura. >> that's right. we see those sensors slowing for the east shore freeway bay bridge approach near the tri-valley this morning. a lot of traffic now through hayward and fremont.

and an update for that deadly crash scene in los gatos i have been telling you about all morning long. new update. chp said they had to close the connector to northbound highway 17 both directions of highway 85. camden avenue is probably going to be best access towards highway 17 in this area and this is going to be the case until about 10:30 this morning. so, kind of a messy commute down there in the south bay this morning. >> a lot of people waiting in and it's going to cost you. >> that's right. >> because if you sit idalidle, you're wasting your gas. prices have been inching upwards for some time. >> they just keep going. they've gone up more than 8 cents over the last threes, laura. some of that price hike has to do with crude oil prices going up, but much of the increase actually relates to the higher cost of summer gas blends in california and the growth in demand. checking prices around the bay area. san francisco is the high water mark at $2.84 a gallon regular.

sad news out of the nfl this weekend. former nfl player will smith shot and killed on the streets of new orleans. the smith was involved with a car crash with another driver. >> that driver is now behind bar shooting smith. "today" show gabe gutierrez has more details now from new ors. >> laura and sam, good morning. here at the scene, there is a makeshift memorial as police try to piece together the motive of the shooting death of one of the saints' most beloved players. will smith was gunned down here late saturday night and his wife shot in the leg and rushed to the hospital. now, police say a hummer had rear ended smith's mercedes and both drivers exchanged words before one of them opened fire. the driver of that hummer, 30-year-old cardell hayes now charged with second degree murder.

he will plead not guilty and that he was not the aggressor. he once received a settlement from the city over the 2005 police shooting death of his father. earlier in the evening smith had had dinner with a former police officer named in that law suit but hayes said that previous settlement had nothing to do with that shooting. smith's death is rippling across the sports world. he was drafted back in 2004 from ohio state and pro bowler and part of that 2009 super bowl team here in new orleans. investigators are now looking into whether this was road rage, revenge or perhaps something else. guys, back to you. >> thank you. that family picture certainly says so much about how saddening this is. gabe will have much more on the investigation coming up this morning on "today" show. that starts at 7:00. it is 6:44. the backlash continues to grow against mississippi and north carolina over their new religious freedom laws. first it was tech companies like

pay pal pulling business out and now the entertainment industry is joining it. adams boycotting the state's new law that allows religious groups and private businesses to refuse service to gay couples. bruce springsteen and the east street band canceled a show in north carolina yesterday because of a similar law. state lawmakers allegedly double dipping. the "l.a. times" reporting 17 california leaders are reportedly collecting government pension checks on top of their monthly salaries. that includes several lawmakers here in the bay area. it's not illegal to collect the pension and state salary at the same time but critics say the costly pension perk is an example of what is wrong with public retirement benefits. forget blow up mattresses. how about a blow-up bedroom. astronauts will soon be living in style. >> kind of sounds like an adventure. a spacex cargo ship arrived at the international space station over the weekend and delivered

the first inflatable room in space. the contraption is going to be attached to the space station and once it's inflated, astronauts will occasionally go inside to test is out a little bit. nasa envisions inflatable habitats on mars some day and this is just the beginning of testing out that technology. housing prices back here on earth inflated, as well. >> hard to believe but bay area home prices now higher than they were before the housing crisis, mcgrew. are we headed towards another kris sns. >> we know banks are being much more careful about whom they lend and wages are up in the bay area. so, it seems like there will not be a subprime housing crisis, again, any time soon. the california state board of equalization, basically the tax people, say the average home in california, the average home statewide still worth less than it was at the top of the housing boom. but, bay area home prices well

apparently. well south bay teens are busy these days coming up with a unique way to help students study now reportedly making some pretty good money from this brain storm idea. now in the mid-50s. let's drop in on the north bay now to get a closer look at where the temperature in santa rosa is at 55 degrees. we have 55 degrees in mill valley and benicia at 53 des. if you're making plans to go to the a's game today, we will have some low 60s to start out at first pitch and then into the low 50s, upper 50s, as well, by the end of the game. cool and breezy. winds coming in the west at 5 to 15 miles per hour. as we break it down for oakland, we will start out the day with some midhfr -50s there. that is when you'll start to see sun coming up out. no rains today. the seven-day forecast shows that our temperatures really don't change that much, but we will have some rain returning to the bay area on thursday. so, today, we're up to 65 degrees today in gilroy. 64 degrees in san mateo and the mission district at 63 degrees and upper 60s for parts of the

north bay and 68 degrees today in pittsburg. livermore up to 68 degrees. so, we will take a break for a couple of days from those showers. great news, but it's also great we will have a little bit more rain in the forecast. this area of low pressure moves in. it will bring in some scattered showers starting on thursday morning and then after a its out we will have breezy winds through the afternoon. after that our temperatures start to warm up. but not before that weak storm system brings the potential, about a0.1. a look ahead to the weekend forecast. we were couped up inside all weekend long and this weekend coming up, expect high temperatures to top out in the mid to upper 70s in some spots. definitely a beach weekend. 79 degrees in the tri-valley and san francisco keeps it steady in the mid-60s. 76 degrees for sunday in the south bay. so, looking much better, laura, for the kids to get outside. no more coloring books after

she's with hopefully, nothing has happened to her. no one has hurt her. just, you know, that i want to believe and hope that she's okay. >> authorities are also searching for arianna in fresno and southern california. a man convicted in the killing of an east bay family's son is out of prison just after six years. former governor arnold schwarzenegger commuted his sentence. esteban nunez was released yesterday. he was supposed to serve a 16-year sentence for killing luis santos back in 2008. nunez's father is a former speaker of the state assembly and a friend of schwarzenegger's. the victim's parents from lafayette says justice was not served. >> it's not what crime you commit. it's who do you know. who, you know, what access do you have to people in high places. >> the victim's families sued to overturn the shortened sentence, but lost. at uc berkeley today two more students expected to
