brown. we are one week away from the new york primary and candidates on both sides continue to battle for new york. the latest nbc news/"wall street journal"/marist poll shows donald trump and hillary clinton ahead in their home states. trump has a huge lead, 33 points ahead of john kasich and 36 points ahead of ted cruz. if trump wins more than 50% of the vote and all 7 congressional districts, he will take all 95 delegates up for grabs. the democratic race is tighter, but hillary clinton is up 14 points on bernie sanders. this is as vice president joe biden has interesting insight on the candidates. our political coverage begins with the republicans and nbc's halle jackson. >> donald trump wants to win in his home state. where our new poll shows him over 50% now. ted cruz, far behind in third. his campaign tells nbc news they're hoping to stop a sweep. because if trump gets all new york's delegates, he'll only need 55% of what's left to lock

up the nomination. trump knows if he wins at home and in the nearby states voting next, it's easier for him to avoid a contested convention. that's where cruz may have the delegate advantage after cleaning up in colorado. >> now they're trying to pick off those delegates one by one. that's not the way democracy is supposed to work. the system is rigged, it's crooked. >> while trump won't get the votes of two of his own children, who missed the registration deadline, he's adding staff to get a better handle on system he's railing against, his rivals argue trump's complaints are sour grapes. >> latest thing he seized upon is when people vote against him, they're stealing the election. it's a really odd notion. >> and while trump is taking aim at cruz's tactics, a cruz campaign source argues if he doesn't like the system, he shouldn't be a part of it. >> what people are electing through the delegate selection process are their people to represent their views on the floor in cleveland.

thought. >> the zika virus is carried by a mosquito. until recently, researchers believed the mosquito was found in just 12 states. new estimates, 30. already 346 zika cases are reported all over the country. mostly from travelers who brought the virus home. and now pregnant women living along the gulf coast are potentially at risk. tropical disease expert, dr. peter hotez is warning microcephaly could ravage the region like hurricane katrina. >> i'm worried in areas of extreme poverty and poor neighborhoods in the u.s. gulf coast cities such as houston and new orleans, maybe tampa that we're highly vulnerable to seeing zika virus transmission leading to microcephaly cases. >> especially vulnerable, the poor living without air conditioning or window screens near standing water where mosquitos thrive. researchers say unborn babies may be at risk throughout the mother's pregnancy, not just in

the first trimester. and zika can cause other forms of brain damage that may show up years later. >> the more and more we learn, the more and more you get concerned about what the scope of what the virus is doing. >> nbc's tom costello reporting. doctors from the cdc and nih are asking congress for $2 billion in emergency funding to fight the virus. well today is national equal pay day. april 12th. represents the number of extra days since the start of last year that a woman working full time has to work to earn the same amount as a man in a year. in honor of female equality, president obama will designate a new national monument later today, in washington, d.c. the historic site houses an extensive collection documenting the history, tactics and accomplishments of the women's movement in the u.s. co-captain of the u.s. women's soccer team, carly lloyd continues to speak up about the pay gap in soccer. in an essay published by "the new york times," she said the

team is sick of being treated like second-class citizens. equal pay day is prompting some tech companies to release their figures, facebook, microsoft, godaddy and amazon say they provide equal pay with women making 99 cents to a man's dollar. the u.s. now ranks 74th in wage equality among 145 countries. that's down from 65th place in 2014. the gap in earnings has widened with women earning 64% of a man's income. check out this amazing video from california, it shows a large sinkhole opening up in the middle of a road as a street falls into a sewage line below. the hole is about 15 feet wide and up to 20 feet deep. authorities say the exact cause of the cave-in is unknown. it could be due to recent rains. and with that, let's get a check of the weather from nbc meteorologist bill karins that was a huge sinkhole. >> they're so fascinating. we're so used to you never think about what you're walking on. >> they pop out of nowhere. >> the fact that that could

be -- go out from underneath you blows your mind. i'll show you yesterday we these big storms in texas. we had huge hailstones, pictures out there from wiley, texas of from softball-sized hail. this video from denton, that was quarter-sized hail. when you see it smashing on the pavement like a snowball, that's when you know you got a big hailstorm. those storms have weakened, now down to southern mississippi. so take you to the northwest this is where we have a weak system coming onshore, over the next couple of days, it looks like our beautiful weather pattern has come to an end. a big storm, you see it on the edge of the screen here. it will head up into british columbia and continue to draw in moisture over the next two days, rain showers are popping up and steadier rains approaching the coastline of northwestern washington state. as far as the forecast timeline, this is at 8:00 a.m., the showers we were looking at. the coastal showers and that's going to continue to push along the oregon coastline also. and as we go throughout the day, there's noon and especially we'll try to push inland, about

expected to be a week-long protest. protesters are demanding that congress look for ways to re deuce the influence of money in politics, protecting voting rights and insure that every american has an equal voice. tennessee legislators just passed a bill that would allow mental health therapists to turn patients away if their religious beliefs conflict with their own. the measure is part of a wave of anti-lgbt bills across the country. opponents say it would legalize discrimination against the lgbt community. the bill now goes to the tennessee governor. britain's william and kate are making quite an impression on their royal tour across india. for many it's bringing to mind memories of another royal visit nearly a quarter-century ago by william's late mother, princess diana. nbc's kier simmons has more. >> this trip to india was kate's idea, according to prince william. she's been learning the language. or trying. visiting poor children in mumbai.

leading the news in the "huffington post," thieves swipe andy warhol's soup cans collection from the missouri museum. they're part of a collection owned by the springfield art museum since 1985. the fbi posted a $25,000 reward for information leading to the print's recovery. and from nbc news, new york, thieves bore a hole into brooklyn bank vault, steal $280,000 according to nypd. this is crazy. the break-in was discovered monday morning at the burrow park hsbc branch. the crooks drilled from the roof directly into the vault ceiling, making off with the money. and several safe deposit boxes. and it does sound something like something right out of a movie. well according to a new study. smokers who are unemployed are
