no major damage reported also no threat of a tsunami. we'll continue to track that information as it continues to come in. but things are looking a little bit better there compared to the initial reports of a 6.4. a look here now in the bay area. the rain is clearing out and that will the trend over the next several hours. still wet roads left behind after 0.25 fell in a few isolated areas and it continues to move through morgan hill and approaching gilroy and then will pretty much be done with gusty winds all the day as our skies clear. there may still be a few leftover sprinkles and far north bay and then into the rest of the forecast our winds turn breezy and cooler today, but warming up for the weekend. i'll detail all of that coming up in thet microclimate forecast. let's head over to mike nowing the roadways and some slick conditions for drivers. >> that's right, kari. spinouts the word of the morning. whatever the case, you watch out. looking towards 101 with the

most activity and the green shows you where things are wet all over the bay. off ramp and car spun out at the off ramp and we're watching that. no major injuries and no major slowing at that scene. couple crashes. southbound 101 through san mateo and the next one reported right around 92. same area and same details. i'm going to stay in this stretch. there is another spin out. a car did go into the center divide and now facing the wrong way. sounds like, again, another solo car spinout or at least perhaps resulted in a spinout for the crash. >> mike, thank you. the golden state warriors making more mystery last night. take a look at this. the cover of this morning's san francisco chronicle. simply put, best ever. that could be referring to the team, could be referring to steph. the ws now stand alone at the top of the nba record books for most wins in a single season. >> either way it is pretty exciting. stephanie chuang inside oracle

thursday and sunday in houston and if necessary game five would be back in oakland on april 27th. we're going to check back in with stefat 6:30 this morning. and we're going to stay with the warriors every step of the way on their road,fully to another championship for a slide show of the top warriors moments go to our website nbcbayarea.com. now to a story you'll only see on nbc bay area two deputies make a deadly mistake as a gunshot is fired inside hall of justice. >> they are lucky nobody was hit. bob redell joining us live from san francisco. one of the deputies fired the shot. what happened? >> sam and laura, spokeswoman confirms that a deputy accidentally fired a gun inside the hall of justice on the third floor. this was inside a bailiff's office. the round narrowly missed a fellow deputy. as you can see in this photo, that round went to an office cabinet and lodged itself into

a. this happened yesterday morning at 7:10. before court started and next to the chambers used by presiding judge terry jackson. the spokeswoman tells us that the gun was a .22 caliber baby glock. handed it to a fellow deputy for an explanation and was unaware it was loaded and pointed it at the deputy and inexplicably pulled the trigger. that person almost hit that person's colleague. the sheriff's office calls this accident accidental. the deputy who fired the gun is still on duty but for the time being not lowed to carry a firearm. bob redell "today in the bay." on the road to recovery. the dog who was thrown from a moving car in the north bay thankfully doing much better this morning. she's being taken care of at the petaluma animal services center. check out her little pink cast there. the shelter has dubbed her

martha. the sweet freeway girl. she was found weak and suffering from a broken leg and pelvis yesterday. someone found her on the side of highway 101 near the east washington street off ramp in petalu petaluma. martha is going to be just fine. hopefully one of her 12 million fans online may give her a loving, happy home. she deserves it. a south bay man waking up behind bars accused of running a counterfeit money operation that spanned more than two dozen states. santa clara county sheriff deputies say he made and distributed fake money to customers in 20 states, including california. they say he was tracked down with information provided by virginia authorities and the u.s. postal service. he is also allegedly tied to a mail fraud operation in virginia. if you live in foster city, you can expect a knock on your door today, don't be concerned about it. part of an emergency drill. response teams are going door to door doing welfare checks.

up another 20 degrees over what we will have today. i'll talk about that and we'll look ahead a slight chance of rain early next week. that's coming up a little bit later and now mike is tracking even more problems for drivers on the roads. >> that's right, kari. focus on san mateo. we have 101 and that spinout over there but really 101 up here as we talked about. southbound direction coming down towards me into san mateo. a crash reported at third. we thought maybe it was a duplicate and chp specifically entered not the same thing as the first one. right around hillsdale the scene of the second crash. we just got word of a crash involving two vehicles. so, two solo spinouts and one crash involving two vehicles through the same stretch. we're warning about slippery conditions out there from earlier rain. let's look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the traffic backing up here. now, this is not a surprise and no major problems for the maze or east shore freeway.

all the republican presidential nominees. >> i would say that trump has a slight edge. >> why? >> just because of the celebrity side to it. >> in a statement, trump said california has struggled to regain its full economic success. he promises to bring more jobs. now, news related to the trump team. and battery charges against trump staff er charges dropped today. florida palm beach attorney will make the announcement later this afternoon. he is accused of grabbing a reporter's arm during a trump rally in florida. our sources say that reporter agrees to drop the case if he appalls. meantime, marco rubio delegates up for grabs at the republican convention in july. rubio suspended his campaign after losing his home state of florida. he's still amazingly in third place in the overall delegate

head out this morning. time to wake up. shake off that late night fatigue from staying up and watching all that basketball and get ready for a beautiful day. now, as we take a live look now at san francisco, the bay bridge. all lit up with some cloudy skies tostart. it won't be like that all day. this rain is moving out and it continues to clear the bay area as we get a close look at the south bay now a couple of sprinkles moving through morgan hill. but some of those spots in the south bay and east bay where the rain most recently fell may still be slick. so, be mindful of that before you head out the door. and now as our temperatures cool down to the mid-40s in the north bay. we have low 50s in the south bay. ing back on how much rain we had from that system that moved through from our weather underground sites. up to 0.25 and in san francisco the prisido as well as bay view had 0.1 and then heading over to the east bay where a couple of cities didn't have any rain and then over towards danville and

0.25 and alameda had 0.1 there. into the south bay, most areas were about trace amounts up to 0.1 and then the same in the peninsula, as wem. so, looking at a nice little soaking to start out the day. this afternoon we dry out very quickly. and our temperatures will be a touch cooler than yesterday reaching ina the mid-60s. and wale also have a high surf advisory because the winds will be kicking up behind this system moving out. as high pressure moves in. so, our swells will be up to 16 to 22 feet today. and a period of about 16 seconds. so, a dangerous for surfers or anywhere near the water today and be mindful that we could have waves, as well. look at the weekend forecast as all of this moves out temperatures heating up. tomorrow will be beautiful. right at about 70 degrees. 75 in the north bay and then look at those temperatures jump between friday and saturday.

and into the mid-80s for the south bay. we'll definitely feel like summer and a big contrast from the weekend we just had with some rain and cooler temperatures. let's check in now with mike tracking quite a few problems on the roads this morning. >> kari, san mateo, specifically. the bay looks pretty good as far as the traffic flow, especially considering the fact that we have slick roadways and a lot of potential for spinouts, which we've seen around the bay. focusing on san mateo. three incidents southbound. fender bender reported there and no injuries as far as i know. slowing in both directions because this does affect the fast lane. the interchange is fine, but just past the interchange, there is one crash involving a single car spinout. so, the slicker roadways likely the cause of that or at least contributed. i'll just stay clear of the incident report as far as insurance is concerned. south of there, hillsdale another crash and another fender bender. that stretch has three crashes and slicker roadways just off the san mateo bridge.

our live camera as we look at the westbound commute. that picks up. nothing major and we see a smooth drive visible across the bay and dumbarton bridges pick up the volume. north bay, san rafael southbound. a smoother drive developing a little more traffic, a little mist in the air and, look, you can still see some puddling on the roads. >> good to watch out for. thank y thanks, mike. serious confirms that are now confirmed. proving the dangerous zika virus, in fact, cause serious birth defects.

new this morning, american troops will remain in the philippi philippines. it's part of the military build up that is sure to increase tensions with china. the u.s. will keep nearly 300 troops in the philippines through the end of the month. the pentagon says for the first time u.s. ships are patrolling the seas. tensions have been rising between china and other countries as china lays claims on small islands. unsafe and unprofessional. that is what the white house is saying after russia flying dangerously close to a u.s. navy destroyer. this happened on monday and tuesday in the baltic sea right near a russian-controlled region. the of the "uss donald cook" radioed that pilots but the pilots weren't responding. the jets did appear to be unarmed. russian warplanes have done this to nato and u.s. ships in the

past. the obama administration is expected to declare new regulations for off shore oil drilling. coming in response to the deep water horizon explosion which dumped millions of gallons of oil into the gulf of mexico. federal investigators blamed a faulty blow-out preventer for that spill. industry officials are arguing that proposed changes would cost billions of dollars. the zika virus causes birth defects. now without a doubt the contagious virus has severe effects on infants. >> very unsettling news confirmed yesterday. tracie potts joining us live from washington, d.c., with more on this growing push to contain the virus. good morning. >> yea, sam. good morning. containing it means making sure those mosquitos don't travel too far north into the united states. so far the nearly 350 people who have been diagnosed with zika here in the united states are all travel related. no one has been infected after being bitten by a mosquito in this country the cdc says.

as the weather gets warmer, that could change. that's what they're concerned about. asked congress for nearly $2 billion. not approved. some lawmakers saying it might not be approved september after summer is over and have to deal with the pot of money that is left over from ebola which is just over a fourth of what they think they need. now, even more urgent the cdc says after this definitive link between the zika virus and birth defects. it's something that scientists all over the world had suspected they had been operating as if that was the case. now, in the new england journal of medicine, the cdc is reporting that they've looked at all the studies and they found that there has actually been zika virus found in the brain tissue and other amniotic flood would of babies whose mother were infected by this. they want to act urgently, but not clear how soon the money will be there to prevent those

francisco. 62 degrees in the tri-valley. a mix of sun and clouds along with those strong winds and the afternoon slightly cooler temperatures up to 64 degrees in the south bay and the tri-valley. it does warm up as we go into the weekend. about 20 degrees warmer than what we'll feel today. i'll detail that today coming up the next microclimate forecast. mike is tracking spinouts and problems on the roadways due to that overnight rain. >> that's right, kari. even the slicker roadways and damp roadways contributing to the fact we've seen those all around the bay. look at the green highlighting still damp roadways around parts of the south bay and tri-valley. break down in san jose for 101. check in on that in a second. clus cluster of crashes. active scenes still reported there and not a lot of slowing except for the one at third. just north of 92 for both directs of the bay shore. we'll continue to track that, as well as the build.

swear, i'm not trying to rub this in. this is where i am sitting. how close i was to witnessing history. where henry the photographer is where steph and dramond were doing stretches. very amazing night. the game did start a little bit slow. the usual back and forth and the warriors were missing some baskets but time for chef cookie to cook up that heat and he did. six threes in the first quarter ending with ten in the game to make it to 402 threes for the season. nba record beating theprieve yos record set by steph himself at 286 last season. so much history was made with that and the 73-9 record the '95/'96 chicago bulls. 72-10. witness that was witnessed by lucky oakland high school students who got free seats because they're maintaining a

review. critics are also calling on attorney general car mela hairs to investigate the san francisco police department. in the meantime, the san francisco police chief greg sir said his officers shot and killed a homeless man in self-defense. the shooting happened a week ago in the mission district. the chief updated the crowd yesterday. the homeless man lunged at police officers forcing officers to open fire. they say he had a knife. the department, however, is facing heavy criticism. >> how can you say that you're having an independent investigation when you're already saying this is what we believed happened? >> i didn't say i believed happened. i given the facts that came from interviews. >> this is surveillance video of the shooting obtained by "the chronicle." the investigation continues and the chief says changes are coming to his department. the man accused of preying on children while working at a concord dental office will face

a judge this afternoon. we are learning disturbing new details about this case. detectives say another girl now has come forward saying that soro molested her during a procedure. he was arrested last week. detectives say that he filmed himself touching more than 50 young patients inappropriately. >> the videos are very clear of what happened. and i've had to view most of them and along with the primary detective, they're unpleasant. >> to this point, four girls have come forward to police. as a statewide search for arianna fitts continues those who work would her mother, nicole, came together to remember her last night. they held a vigil in the parking lot. fitts was found dead last friday. they have identified several people of inbut no dedirect suspects in the case. fairfield police spent much of the night looking for an armed and dangerous man.

steven and james street and at one point people living in the area were told to lock their windows and doors and remain inside. officers say they were looking for 28-year-old kyle amos beinged for a homicide earlier in the month. he is considered armed and dangerous. if you have any information about his whereabouts, fairfield police ask that you please give them a call. a story that "today in the bay" has been covering since last summer. truck loads of putashios, almonds are being stolen. they can carry up to $500,000 of crops. international crime rings are behind the thefts and hacking into trucking companies to steal driver's identities. last year the nut industry lost nearly $5 million to theft, an all-time high. the weather around hery not too tough of a nut to crack, but we actually are getting a bit of a change today. kari hall tracking some rain on your thursday. goodern moing, kari.

>> good morning, sam and laura. most of the rain fell early before most people got up and clearing the south bay and we will take a break. still a couple showers for the far north bay, but the rest of us will be drying out as our skies clear. a close look, we are seeing that raining on out, but not before it left about 0.1 up to 0.25 in a couple spots and breezy winds now and a look outside. you see all of our temperatures are still on the cool side. it's dropped down to 43 degrees in the north bay, but will rise up to 63 degrees later today. a mixture of sun and clouds and overall a beautiful day after getting nice little soaking for the morning start. but we do still have some slick conditions on the roadways. it's caused all kinds of problems. let's check in now with mike to see what's happening now in the south bay. >> yeah, kari. this disabled vehicle by the airport and the crash on the pips and san mateo. those don't cause any slowing and may be completely clear by now. north 87, we saw a little slow and a tad bit as you get over

towards 101 and sound like two vehicles that may be over on the shoulder as a result of mechanical problems. very close to our station. i can't check it because i can't get out there and back in time. we'll look over towards dublin and how the conditions are and we're still dealing with damp roadways. even though traffic is relatively light and moving well, look at this off ramp at and slicker conditions in many spots like this off ramp. we've seen a number of spinouts. back to you. instead of a breathalyzer how about a textalyzer. the new way police departments can soon crack down on distracted driving. i'm bob redell and take you live here to san francisco where a sheriff's deputy almost shoots one of his colleagues inside the hall of justice. we'll explain, coming up. a live look right now at the big board. the dow jones, the markets in general hitting their year highs yesterday trying to keep the momentum going. so, trading pretty flat in the first ten minutes or so this morning.

also from mt. hamilton. you can see the clouds that are sitting low across the south bay as that sun comes up. so, we are going to get some clearing. we are seeing that rain moving farther to the south. there is still a batch of rain to the north, but it looks to stay to the north. and then into the rest of the day, some sunshine as we see their temperatures starting out nice and cool. it's 53 degrees now in oakland and 45 degrees now in santa rosa. and let's get a closer look at some of the rainfall totals we had from those quick showers moving through. while you were sleeping up to 0.25 and napa had 08. in san francisco, about 0.1 or less. and then we head over to the east bay where there were a couple of cities that measured absolutely nothing like antioch and castro valley. and then danville had 0.25. so it was very hit or miss. in the south bay, mostly 0.1 or less and about the same in the peninsula. so, just looking at where you are and if you need to turn off those sprinklers, at least for

today. we will get the sun throughout the afternoon. gusty winds and it will be a touch cooler than it was yesterday. look at that seven-day forecast at the bottom of your screen. our temperatures will be heading up and really warming up for the weekend. high surf advisory heads up if you plan to go to the beach today. even though it will be cool, it will be windy and the swells up to 16 to 22 feet. very dangerous conditions with rip currents and sneaker waves and this as things calm down, our temperatures ramping up at least 20 days over today for parts of the south bay between now and saturday and sunday. up to 85 degrees in the south bay. in san francisco, up to 77 degrees. so, it will feel like summertime after some cooler temperatures today and the wind, once again, will cut right through you. make sure you have on some warm clothes. let's check in with mike tracking quite a few problems with the wet roadways.

the chest and seven times in the back. that according to the coroners report. that shooting happened over the weekend. surveillance video showing smith's suv rear ending a hummer which led to a chase and eventually the driver of that hummer shooting smith. the suspect's attorney claims that smith had a gun in his suv and that his client was acting in self-defense. smith's attorney said that gun left a compartment of the vehicle. the federal government wants to mark thes of sex offenders and the fight to stop it has stalled for now. "the chronicle" reports that a federal judge refused to block the new law. the judge says a legal challenge is premature because officials have not developed plans for the marking just yet. six unnamed sex offenders are challenging the new law saying it unfairly places them on an international black list. okay. move over and share your seat, why don't you. b.a.r.t. right now looking at a new anti-seat hogging policy.
