7:08 am
please stay with us. we want to bring in steve kornacki. good morning to you. let's talk about the polls in this race because it still shows clinton with a wide lead although it has been tightening if you look at the trend but new york is a closed primary, does that hurt sanders? >> yeah, i mean, there's closed primaries and then really closed primaries. this is the kind of state where you had to switch your party registration months ago, really last year if you wanted to participate in the democratic primary coming up next week. the problem for sanders he has made progress in the polls they seem to have stabilized around a ten point lead for hillary clinton. you basically need to run the stable from here on out, moral victories count count anymore for bernie sanders. >> let me ask you about this trip for bernie sanders to the vatican. a lot of his allies are saying how can you up and leave in the middle of a primary that he needs to at least keep close? >> this is really personal. i know -- i know myself i interviewed bernie sanders moments after pope francis finished his speech to congress, he was so caught up in it.
7:09 am
he really relates to this, to pope francis' social values. so he is insisting on doing it and they think that he will be back on the campaign trail by saturday. so he won't have missed so much. >> and no guarantee by the way of meeting the pope yet. >> not at all. it's in fact not confirmed, it's still possible, it would be after the conference, they're still talking about it with people in the vatican but not at all confirmed. >> are you surprised in this pitched battle that he is taking just a couple days off the trail. >> especially given the stakes of new york to him. this is dpo or die for bernie sanders. >> steve hang in with us we want to get your take on the republican race as well. donald trump ramping up his attacks on the system. peter alexander has more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. never a dull moment. donald trump now beefing up his campaign leadership as well adding vet can operatives to try to catch up to ted cruz who has

7:11 am
>> rnc chairman reince priebus responding. >> i think when people are frustrated and upset they say things that they regret. the rules are not being changed in order to injure or benefit anybody, they are what they are. >> the back and forthcoming amid what some are calling an awkward moment at that pittsburgh rally when trump invoked the late penn state football coach joe paterno. >> how is joe paterno, are we going to bring that back? right? how about that whole -- how about that whole deal? >> paterno died in 2012 shortly after retiring in the wake of a child sex abuse scandal that rocked penn state. a trump spokesperson later clarifying trump was referring to a statue of paterno removed from outside the stadium amid the controversy four years ago. wednesday night cruz and his wife found themselves on stage and upstaged by daughters caroline and catherine. >> they both had matching karaoke machines and it is a little frightening with the two of them singing taylor swift together. >> we don't sing together.

7:13 am
number in politics right now 1,237 the number of dell a gats that have to be won to get the republican nomination. >> every state has a different number of delegates it's based on the population of the state, two, how republican the state is, is it vote for republicans, elect a lot of republicans. you add them all together you divide it in half and add one, that's a majority, 50% plus one and you come up with 1,237. >> simple majority is what we need. voters actually now are picking delegates to go to the convention to represent them. voters noft directly voting for the canned at that time. so who are these delegates. >> this is a state by state thing. in some states you do a winner take all if you win the state you get all the delegates, in some states it's proportionately divided. it really varies. in some states people actually run with their names on the ballot next to the candidates to be delegates to the convention, in other states candidate wins the primary and the state party decides, okay, you got 25 delegates from this state, here are the 25 people who will be your delegates. it's across the board, it varies. >> republican convention
7:14 am
mid-july in cleveland, last primary early june. what are the key stas as we approach early june that are going to break or break this race? >> the question here is can trump hit 1,237. pennsylvania is the first big wild card. trump looks like he is going to win it but we talk about the different kinds of delegates, they have this thing called unbound delegates, they have 54 of them, they're technically free agents but a lot of them are saying they will honor the statewide winner. if trump gets a big win there he could get a lot more delegates than people are thinking. indiana may 3rd looms as the ultimate wild card in all of this right now. you could make a strong can a case it's a cruz or trump state, the swing in delegates based on a few points difference is huge. in terms of trump getting to 1,237 that's the biggest single wild card. >> conventional wisdom after wisconsin was that donald trump perhaps could not get to 1,237. you still believe that this morning? >> i think he can get to 1,237. if i were in vegas i might even bet on it right now. it has a lot to do with what i
7:15 am
just said in pennsylvania but again tell me who wins indiana and i will tell you if he gets there. >> steve kornacki, thanks. one other note on politics, we should mention one week from today donald trump will join us live for an exclusive town hall on our plaza, we will talk to him and he will answer questions from our crowd next thursday april 21st. now to extremely close encounters that are raising concerns with u.s. officials. russian fighter jets buzzed an american navy destroyer in the baltic sea. at one point the planes came within 30 feet of that ship. this morning both sides are weighing in. kelly cobiella has the latest on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the russians are shrugging this off this morning, even questioning the u.s. reaction to it saying russian pilots did nothing wrong when their jets flew straight for a destroyer in the sea on attack mode. >> below the bridge wing. >> reporter: the two russian jets buzzed the uss donald cook
