nbc bay area news begins with breaking news. good morning thanks so much for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. breaking news out of the east bay. a busy freeway shut down because of a big rig crash. >> bob redell live on the scene on 880 in hayward. it's a mess out there, bob. >> it is. good morning to you, sam and laura. southbound 880 where you can see a big rig that overturned. it shut down four lanes of southbound 880. within the past few moments chp was able to open the far right lane and that is the number five lane, your slow lanes. you'll still have a backup and on the northbound direction two left lanes shut down because of

this. this accident happened around 3:00 this morning. according to the fire department, the big rig was traveling southbound when it tried to avoid hitting an aabandoned car and then there is another car that is behind the big rig that ended up colliding with the big rig. the driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and the driver of the other car treated and releas. we do not have an estimated time for when they're going to be able to clear this. according to chp they have to figure out how to off load the wine on board. half a load of wine. if you look at the big rig to the right, there is a highway sign. there are live wires in that sign. so, you have the issues of live wires, getting this big rig off loaded if it needs to be off loaded, and also a minor diesel spill. you're looking at something that could be here for quite some time that could impact the morning commute. for how you want to get around this, i want to send it over to

our traffic anchor, mike. >> he is out there where that overhead sign has taken down with the wires. here's the coliseum and south of there through here. the backup has been going on. this happened just after 3:00 a.m. and they quickly formed a backup from his peperian all th way down. and then we'll continue down to winten where you jump back on to the nimitz freeway. only one southbound lane is open. the northbound side, although traffic flows smoothly, you saw in bob's live shot there, the big rig up to the center divide and the sign down to the middle of the roadway and two fast lanes are closed and traffic so far holds up, but this is going to last for hours and this will be a problem for your morning commute. we're following hayward because of that big crash. back to you. >> updates on this developing

situation. for instant coverage head to our website, as well. nbcbayarea.com or download our free app for alerts. a violent robbery suspect on the loose. police say he preyed on a 70-year-old woman walking down a quiet berkeley street in the middle of the day. >> it happened monday afternoon in the north berkeley hills. now, fliers are posted along the streetern waing neighbors to be on the look out for this man. a home surrailance camera caught this photo. the robber actually said hello as she walked past. then she was knocked down so hard she needed stitches on her face. >> i really can't believe that. i can't believe it would happen around here, especially. >> i have a lot of friends from berkeley. it's new news to me and fairly shocking. >> police say the suspect jumped into a dark four-door ford f-150 pickup with a shell on the back. the suspect was able to steal the victim's black canvas bag.

two cruisers rammed during a car chase that ended in pleasant hill late last night. they initially tried to pull the suspect over for tailgating on highway 24. the suspect sped off and crashed his mercedes-benz suv into the patrol cars. the suspect then ran off. a police dog eventually caught up with him and the man was arrested. no officers were hurt in that chase. only on nbc bay area, a video of a wanted man captured by police. you can see him in handcuffs. officers say the man is one of four suspects wanted for armd purse snatching in millbrae. this morning all four men are in custody. police say the suspects led them on a high-speed chase before crashing on i-80 in fremont yesterday afternoon. police had to shut down the freeway for about ten minutes while they made the arrest. the task force is working to stop the east bay free way shootings. since november, there have been 17 shootings in alameda and contra costa counties.

last night we went on a ride along with richmond police. they're working with the safe streets task force to crack down on gang violence. police believe that these shootings are not random. >> we know which gang are dealing with who and which gangs are responsible for the violence. but, as far as the specific person, that's what the task force is working on clarifying. >> one person connected to a freeway shooting in pittsburg was arrested two weeks ago. since january for context, 30 guns have been taken off of the street. but no arrests have been made in the rash of shootings along interstate 80. 4:35. friday morning. want to get a look at the forecast with kari. >> good morning, sam and laura. mostly clear starts and chilly temperatures especially in the north bay now. where it is starting out at 46 degrees. beautiful afternoon. a little bit warmer than yesterday. with just a few clouds to start

and we'll see those clouds mixing in with the sun with some breezy winds all throughout the afternoon. in the north bay expect a high of 75 degrees and 71 in the south bay and the peninsula. san francisco up to 68 degrees. so, we'll be a touch warmer than yesterday and that trend continues into the weekend with a big ramp up in temperatures tomorrow and sunday. i'll detail that and we'll look ahead to early next week. that's coming up in the microclimate forecast. let's head back over to mike to get an update on what's happening with that slow down. >> that big issue is over in hayward. i want to show everybody their view and only drivers 880 right there. again, southbound 880. we just have the slow lane open, but this will remain in place for quite some time because the big rig went up in the center divide. a live wire across the roadway and partially blocking and southbound side one lane open and four lanes closed and your alternate is hisperian and enter

unit exclusive. parents are demanding change. they are accusing one of the largest school districts in the bay area of unfairly criminalizing kids for what they describe as childish behavior. >> for months investigative reporter has been looking into how schools in our area discipline students. this morning, he explains how some kids are leaving class with a criminal record. >> guys, good morning. our investigation last year revealed that certain schools across the bay area call police on their students a lot more than you might think. and the reasons they're being called now have some parents furious. like 15-year-old kai decided to go sliding in the mud, he called it just innocent prank but his school called police. he was technically arrested. his school district, san jose unified pays police officer os to patrol some of their campuschise is common. we discovered there is no written policy detailing when or

beautiful weather today and it starts out at 51 degrees now in san francisco and the peninsula. and 50 degrees now in the south bay. as we get a closer look at the south bay now from weather underground sites and 48 degrees in morgan hill and 47 and campbell at 50 degrees. winds still breezy today. at least to start. coming in from the north and northwest at about 20 miles an hour. little bit higher at half moon bay. at 31 miles an hour. and then it starts to calm just a bit as we go into the afternoon, but, still, overall, a breezy day and staying breezy into tonight. because we dahave some high winds, it's going to cause the swells to build up and we will have dangerous surf today. windy conditions. the high surf advisory will expire at 8:00 this morning, but it will take a while before those waves really start to come down. so, today, at about 12 to 18 feet waves and some very strong rip currents. also some long duration in between those waves. and today up to 71 degrees so

nice and comfortable in los gatos and tenderloin will be at 66 degrees and fairfield 76 and 75 today in brentwood. pleasanton a high of 74 degrees. now, that we've gotten rid of the rain that was here yesterday, that weather system has now moved over to the rockies and we'll have more of this dry weather and warming temperatures into the next couple of days reaching into the upper 70s to low 80s for saturday and then look at that some spots inland will be up to 85 degrees in the south bay and the north bay with mostly sunny skies. let's check in now with mike to see how the roads are moving. >> all right, kari. got a little anxious there because i wanted tohow you first of all the bay bridge toll plaza. that's just fine right now. we'll look at most of the bay. we're focusing on hayward. most of your commuters are going to be just fine. but hayward is where we're concentrating this morning and have been since just after 3:00 this morning.

this crash as we have things blocked up. all the way down past the scene of the crash and down before you get to lincoln avenue. your alternate because only one of your southbound lanes is open. northbound has three lanes open but, of course, for the very latest we do have our own bob redell out there and a big rig and a sign. bob, you're out there on the nimitz freeway. what is the latest you've learned? >> as you mentioned, the two left lanes only one lane of southbound 880 is open because of this overturned big rig and within the past few moments actually chp has stopped traffic. within the past few moments they dragged the big rig over closer to the shoulder so they can open more lanes. at least get one more lane open and we're not clear how many more lanes they'll get open the one and then possibly two and we did talk to alameda county fire and it is going to be quite some

has april 15th as one boston day. changes on san francisco streets have some drivers seeing red. the mta is now finishing up the process of painting red lanes in san francisco's mission district. it's part of the 14th mission rapid project which dessinginates lanes for only buses and taxies on mission street between 11th and randall. tweaking some of the changes but long-time residents say it has created too much confusion. >> children are getting late to school and late to work and this is a family neighborhood. >> we look at signal, timing and we've given some better signage and better striping in the street. >> the mata is just completing the project. crews will still need to paint two blocks. bay area ferry service getting a big boost courtesy of millions of dollars in new funding. "the chronicle" reporting the department of transportation has authorized $4 million to build

that lane over there, that's the far right lane heading southbound. the only lane that is reopened. you can see you have these wreckers right here. they're trying to take the white big rig and the trailer and drag it over to the center divide so they can open up one more lane to ease the traffic flow as we get into the friday morning commute. that big rig was traveling southbound around 3:00 this morning when it was trying to avoid an abandoned vehicle that was left on the side of the road. unfortunately, the driver could not avoid it and crashed into it d turned over. another car came and hit the big rig. see how the driver of the big rig taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the driver of the car that hit the big rig was treated and released. one reason why this is going to take so long to get the big rig overturned is because it's full of, about half a load of wine onboard that is heavy and needs to be off loaded. if you come back out here wide the freeway sign that was knocked down. when it knocked down it exposed
