6:00 am
let's get to our team coverage of the breaking news we have been following. mike will join us with more on the backup and a look at the alternate routes we can take this morning. let's start out with bob redell been on the scene all morning long right next to that big rig. any progress so far, bob? >> well, we have a better idea of when we'll have southbound 880 reopened. right now five lanes here. one of those lanes is opened. that is the far right lane. the chp is about to reopen two more lanes. you have three lanes open. and then as you can see the big rig here still occupying the two other lanes. they expect to have that cleared between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning. one reason why it's taking so long this big rig you can see it's overturned and have half a load of wine. it's our understanding they have to off load each box of wine by hand and that will take time. i don't know if you it see it. if you walk around here through the left. behind the cab right in front of us a highway sign that was knocked down. that highway sign exposed some
6:01 am
hot wires. you have electroified lines there. this big overturned around 3:00 this morning. we are here at a street at hayward and a stalled vehicle on the road. chp is not clear on what happened first. but either the big rig or another car hit that stalled vehicle. so you have these two vehicles in an accident. another car that came and hit the big rig. have a total of four vehicles involved. the krirdriver of the big rig w taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the driver of the car that hit the big rig and the other car are fine. still the driver of the stalled vehicle that chp says is accounted for. >> there's a possibility that somebody did flee the scene. the driver of one of the involved vehicles. as i said, everything is going under investigation and we don't have any suspects names or anything right now. >> now, i want you to get a look at the mess here from above from our helicopter.
6:02 am
you can see that traffic is backed in both directions. again, you're looking at 880 in hayward where this big rig overturned. only one lane opened right now in the southbound direction. they are expected to open two more lanes shortly. two lanes in the northbound direction that are shut down for vehicles to have access and, of course, because of that sign that is electroified. the eta on getting this mess completely cleared up is between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning. unfortunately, this is going on throughout the entire commute and that's why we have our traffic anchor mike inouye to tell us how taget around this mess. >> thanks for being out there and give us the latest information. the chopper shot i want to show you, again. we are in progress. hoping to open a few more lanes and we may have that. there we go. southbound side one lane open. southbound and going that way. top of your screen. one lane open right now. there's the overturned trailer. once they get that cleared sufficiently over to the shoulder, they're going to open
6:03 am
two, possibly three lanes of the southbound side. northbound side already three lanes open but quite the spectacle there in the middle of the roadway. because of that, look at the jam on your map. it is jammed up and this is very unusual for this friday through the spring break week and jammed up towards a street north 92 all the way up to the scene. southbound because one lane is open and jammed to that scene, as well. with three lanes open hopefully over the next couple of minutes we should see some recovery because of lighter flow on friday and that's all relative because look at all these folks coming off of 238. you still have to travel through a majority of that. 580 eastbound out of oakland and then taking mission boulevard over down towards jackson that is a much better route and starting to get crowded as folks head over to the san mateo bridge, as well. less traffic because folks are having trouble getting over there from oakland and the rest of the east bay and those folks may head over towards the bay bridge and seeing more traffic for the toll plaza the metering lights are on and past west
6:04 am
grand and making your way back towards 580 and 24. 580 out of the altamont and you expect that every day and couple crashes around capital and 101. minor slowing. back to you. >> from mike's maps now back to our chopper shot, as you see traffic still there backed up for miles on 880. again, just kind of touch upon the points that bob was making a second ago. four lanes are still closed southbound, but a couple of them could be opening soon. but the eta that bob provided for when all of this mess will get cleared up this morning could be 9:00 or 10:00. we'll check back with him with more updates and mike will continue to monitor the situation, as well. in the meantime, 6:04. we do have developing news out of japan this morning. where rescuers managed to save 8-month-old baby girl who was trapped inside a home that collapsed during yesterday's strong earthquake. miraculously she was not hurt. the 6.5 quake struck near the

but the suspect sped off and crashed his mercedes-benz suv into the patrol cars and then according to chp just kept running. a police dog eventually caught up with him and the man was arrested. no officers were injured. ly on nbc bay area, video of a wanted man captured by police. you see him there in handcuffs. officers say the man is one of four suspects wanted for armed purse snatching in millbrae. this morning all four men are in custody. police say the suspects led them on a high-speed chase before eventually crashing on 880 in fremont yesterday afternoon. police had to shut down the freeway for ten minutes while they made those arrests. the recent glitch that slowed down trains is now almost entirely gone. that glitch knocked out the bay point and concord stations for twost weeks last month. caused by some sort of power surge. b.a.r.t.'s is assistant general manager said while the surge is not a problem any more, the source remains a mystery.
6:08 am
early la nina forecast come true. the water crisis won't get any better. noaa is forecasting conditions by next winter. for the bay area t could mean a drier than normal winter. not always the case. which this year didn't feel the impact that we did from el nino. >> we will be feeling the impact from nice weather, warm weather this weekend but might want to stay away from the local beaches. large waves are pounding the coastline right now and the coast guard is warning people to stay out of the water. >> it's going to be tempting for people to head to bay area beaches this weekend because the weather is going to warm up. let's check the forecast now with kari. >> very warm this weekend but today as waves are very choppy, our temperatures are about average and as we start out this morning, it's cool. but still some very high waves and that surf advisory will expire in about two hours. still some dangerous surf conditions with gusty winds.
6:09 am
waves will be up to 12 to 18 feet and some strong rip currents. and now as we take a look outside at all our microclimates, it's 48 degrees now in the peninsula and 50 degrees in the east bay. and expect highs in the low 70s today for many inland areas. up to 75 in the north bay and 68 degrees today in san francisco. we'll look ahead to that warmer weekend. some spots will be warming up another ten degrees. that's coming up in less than ten minutes. let's head back over to mike giving us an update on the east bay crash. >> better news now and more traffic to show you and the good news is more traffic lanes are open. that's southbound. we have three lanes that top of your screen hoping you see that cal trans truck moving from right to left and going southbound and two fast lanes on both sides of the freeway are closed. you see that overturned big rig on the bottom of your screen. i'm sorry the bottom of your screen is southbound and the top northbound. both sides have three lanes open. have all this activity in the center divide and that's causing

the distraction. the map will show you how big the distraction and the slowing are. friday light for the majority of the bay and hayward and look at that tough drive southbound. jammed up for four miles coming out of san leandro towards the scene. marina boulevard you see the overhead signs and here on the northbound side and 92 heading up past the over towards a street, as well. both directions have these two fast lanes blocked by the overturned rig. that will last until 9:00 or 10:00 this morning. a lot of folks heading up to the bay bridge and getting an alternate because the bay bridge is lighter as is the rest of the bay for this friday. a couple crashes and no real slowing aside from that hayward section north of 92. back to you. >> those two lanes reopening now. thank you, mike. 6:10. one of the most notorious followers of charles manson could be out of prison and the

that is down across the center divide that is causing a huge jam through hayward and tracking a horrible interruption to your friday morning commute. >> bob redell will have an update in it the next ten minutes. a charles manson follower could soon be out of prison. a state review panel says leslie should be released on probation. once a homecoming princess, she was the yungest of the so-called manson family. she went to prison for seven murders in the l.a. area in 1969. prison administrators must still review this request but governor brown has the final say. it is 6:14 right now. microsoft is suing the u.s. government over privacy issues. the lawsuit is over a federal law that lets authorities examine customers e-mails or online files without a person's knowledge. the company says the government is abusing the law and that it has the right to tell microsoft customers when a federal agency is looking at their e-mails. delta airlines kind of a

6:19 am
in the upper 40s. a little bit cool in a few spots. morgan hill is at 47 degrees and also 47 downtown. and campbell is at 48 degrees as we take a look at those weather underground sites. and let's break it down now for palo alto. heading over to the peninsula. 58 degrees at 10:00 and then warming up into the mid-60s by 1:00. so, beautiful lunchtime weather. and then into the low 70s some more sunshine. but it will be breezy, though. and our highs will be slightly above average for this time of year into the low 70s for the south bay. seven-day forecast also at the bottom of the screen. we will be heating up this weekend as we keep this sunny weather. so that weather system that moved through yesterday, that brought us some rain is now producing some no over the rockies and continuing to move off to the east. we still do have a very weak ocean breeze today that keeps it mild, but then high pressure continues to build and fights back that ocean breeze. in fact, we'll have more of an off shore flow and that allows
6:20 am
those temperatures to really start to rise between tomorrow, as well as sunday. it continues into monday. our temperatures will be in the upper 70s right along the coast. and the inland areas right into the 80s. feeling like summertime. not only this weekend, but also to start out the next week. in the north bay. for tomorrow, 7 degrees. in the sunday up to 85 degrees. it continues to warm up, once again, on monday and then starts to come back down. but a look at all the microclimates definitely some beach weather. and you'll want to make some plans to get outside and soak up that sun after last weekend's rain. let's go back to now mike to get an update on the morning commute. >> yeah, kari. first of all, a look at the bay. overall it's friday, as you would expect. hayward, hayward, hayward. we have our chopper. just a second. the extent of the backup on the maps. jammed southbound 880 from marina boulevard and about four miles until you can finally reach the crash and the
6:21 am
northbound side a couple miles from 92. this is your typical zone for the backup but much, much more extensive on a friday. look at the scene. three lanes on your southbound side has opened. one, two, three or actually three, four, five. those are the lanes southbound. same thing for the northbound side. three lanes open. two lanes the center divide are closed because of that rig and that sign is down and cleanup and minor spill, as well. this will probably last until 9:0010:00. bob redell is out there and continuing to give us the update on the situation. as the sun comes up we can see the accident and clean-up activity. san mateo the bridge just south of that crash. folks getting over here and south of san mateo and hay ward. if you're south of hayward fine getting over towards san mateo. look how light the traffic is here with the big jam both directions of 880 in hayward because two lanes in both directions are closed. back to you. >> mike, thank you very much. coming up next, the debate

6:30 am
==laura/live pix/vo== if you're just heading ohe breaking news right now at 6:30. if you're just heading out the door, the morning commute will be an issue. a major traffic backup on 880 through the east bay after a big rig overturned taking out an overhead freeway sign along the way. happened on southbound 880 near the but it is expanding for miles. >> mike inouye will give us ways to get around that mess. bob redell live at the scene all morning long and recently crews were able to open a couple of the southbound lanes. >> correct. so, you've got three lanes southbound 880 at hayward where we're standing right now and the two other lanes are shut down and you can see why the estimate is not going to be until 9:00 to 10:00 this morning that they remove the cab and the trailer
6:31 am
this big rig that is behind the cab. one reason it could take a while to remove the trailers. a half a load of wine and still going to figure out off load all or some of that wine by hand. the northbound direction when this accident happened it took out a traffic sign that was initially electroified. they are right now just got to get that of the way. want to show you a live view frommer so you can get a sense of what kind of impact this is having on the morning commute. southbound 80, two lanes shut down. three open. and northbound 880 again here at eighth street in hayward. as you can see, the backup extends for quite a while. the accident happened around 3:00 this morning. a big rig and a car. one vehicle collided with the stalled vehicle. and the driver of the big rig was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
6:32 am
the driver other two cars were treated and released. the chp still trying to find the driver of the stalled vehicle. they are looking at the possibility that that person might have fled the scene. so, again, as far as the reopening, complete reopening of 880 the estimated time is some time between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning. unfortunately, that is going to be going throughout most of the morning commute. we've got mike inouye are traffic guru to get around this mess in the meantime. mike? >> i wish there were more options, i wish, bob. looking over towards the overturned rig. bob is right there at the scene. two lanes in each direction of 880 are closed and southbound side where the rig is overturned. that sign look over there on the nor northbound side. look like they're thinking about loading it up to the flat bed. wale track the continuing situation here. here's the big backup we'll show you on the map. the effect southbound where the majority of traffic was held up this morning was jammed from marina and continues down am to
6:33 am
and three lanes open that's much better than just one. that distraction also paying an impact for the northbound side where we also have just three lanes opened and two are blocked. we have two, maybe three miles now as far as that backup goes. as an option if you're heading south, take east 580 and mission over towards jackson and that is getting more congestion and moves better than hesperian. and northbound the opposite direction will take you out of the area, as well. meanwhile, the rest of the bay shows a smoother floo eer frida and the bay bridge might see more traffic as folks are avoiding hayward. back to you. >> all right, good thing the rest of the bay area is seeing a pretty smooth commute. certainly not the case as we mentioned all morning long. this is a live overhead look of the backup we're talking about. not expected to be clean until 9:00 or 10:00 this morning. if any changes, we'll update you. bob will join us, again, in just moments.
6:34 am
and a developing story right now out of japan where rescuers managed to save an eight--month-old baby girl that was trapped inside a home that collapsed during yesterday's strong earthquake. miraculously she was not injured. the 6.5 quake toppled buildings and buckling roads. nine people confirmed dead and 750 others injured. >> nice to see that little miracle at least there. today marks three years since bombs went off at the boston marathon. three people were killed and another 260 hurt. one of the bomber was killeds later during a shootout with police. his brother tsarnaev was convicted of bombing and sentenced to death. today officials will hold a wreath laying ceremony in honor of the victims. boston mayor martin walsh has permanently designated april 15th as one boston day. a big legal day on monday and a south bay immigrants rights group is sending supporters to washington for what could be a make or break

counties. the latest one happening on sunday. last night we went on a ride along with richmond police. they're working with the safe streets task force to crack down on gang violence. police believe that these shootings are not random. >> we know which gangs are feuding with who and which gangs are responsible for the violence. as far as the specific person, that's what the task force is working with on clarifying. >> one person connected to a freeway shooting in pittsburg was arrested a couple weeks ago. since january, 30 guns have been taken off the street, but no arrests have been made in the rash of shootings along interstate 80. it is 36 right now. san francisco public defending is recommending an investigation after deputy's gun went off at the hall of justice. the sheriff posted this bulletin yesterday reminding deputies for the rules of handling a gun. the deputy's personal handgun went off accidentally, almost hitting another deputy and putting a hole in the filing

6:39 am
watching this situation all morning long with a big rig that overturned. what is the latest. >> down to two lanes on the southbound side. more activity and moving around these tow trucks and getting ready to reposition or possibly start to right this rig in a bit. they have to off load all the wine and meanwhile the southbound side jammed up and so does the northbound side. look at the map. this is north and southbound as we're looking at the jam. about four miles to the scene and the northbound side which also has two lanes blocked we are jammed as you're approaching 92 and extended backup may be four miles, as well as the morning commute builds right through the area. the san mateo bridge bears much
6:40 am
of the benefit. they may be taking the dumbarton bridge to the south. another crash in the south bay this is southbound 87 at kurtner and moving to the shoulder, but i do see slowing there which is unusual for folks through the area. meanwhile, the rest of the traffic flow throughout the south bay and the rest of the bay, though, look really good. aside from hayward no major problems but that is a major problem in hayward at a street in both directions of 880 have both lanes blocked. three actually in the southbound. back to you. >> thank you so much, mike. nothing can get in the way of true love, right? this couple caught smooching as three suspects stormed the bar they're in. and are you ready because i'm pretty sure w is ready for game number one. but more crowd than usual. why you probably need to come earlier than normal tomorrow.

6:44 am
up hayward. we'll continue to follow this and the progress they're making minute by minute. >> mike, thank you very much. meantime, playoff fever still spreading. the warriors officially kick off their run for another championship. they're looking to go back-to-back. all of this starts tomorrow afternoon at oracle arena, but that's not it locally. there's also an a's game at the coliseum at the exact same time. >> "today in the bay" stephanie chuang inside oracle arena. another big weekend for bay area sports fans. >> huge weekend. one of history record making. here's what the fans are going to be getting. strength in numbers. strive for five. they're hoping for the fifth championship for the ws. that's the same campaign from last season. little look back on history and my favorite at the very end, we believe. that was a huge one. game one tip off is set for 12:30 tomorrow afternoon here at oracle. starting at 9:00 tomorrow morning, fans are going to be
6:45 am
