you might not believe how this ended. the warriors' first playoff game is in the books. fans celebrating that big win at oracle. when we say big win, we mean big win. >> very big. >> that's right, but they are also a little nervous after steph curry has a scary injury. good evening to you. thank you for joining us. i'm peggy bunker. >> and i'm terry mcsweeney. the golden state warriors cruise to an easy victory this afternoon at oracle arena, beating the houston rockets 104-78 to take a one-game lead in the series, but now everyone's holding their breath about steph curry. >> we have team coverage of today's game for you. we begin with fallon smith in our comcast sportsnet studio. all anyone's talking about is steph curry. we know he just talked to the press about his right ankle. >> yeah, and what we know is head coach steve kerr said curry is questionable with an ankle injury for monday's game two. let's show you exactly what happened. second quarter, steph appears to tweak his right ankle here, and he had to leave the game. however, he did return very briefly at the beginning of the

third quarter, but with about nine minutes left in the third, he left the game for good. for more on the injury, here's the mvp himself. >> it's not right, and at risk of further injury or what not, that's the only thing that i think we have to worry about. pain tolerance and all that stuff is -- i kind of know what i can deal with on the court, but you don't want anything more serious to happen, you know, favoring an ankle or what not. so, that's what we'll kind of pay attention to the next two days. >> now, head coach steve kerr said the reason he took steph out for good in the quarter was because "he didn't like the way steph was moving on his ankle." but something tells me, guys, even though he's questionable for monday's game, that unless his ankle is broken, he's playing, and right now his ankle isn't broken, so. >> all right. thanks very much. continuing our warriors playoff

coverage now, nbc bay area's pete cerritif vat seuratos live >> reporter: they were nervous but also happy with the big win, beating the rockets by nearly 30 points. but a lot of them have shown up early, kind of what you've seen all season. steph curry during shoot-around launching three-quarters from half court and kept the energy going, scoring 24 points in that first half. but yes, those fans were concerned when they saw him limping off the court. here's some instant reaction from those fans after the victory when it comes to the reigning mvp. >> i'm a little worried about that, i am, definitely. >> so, a little bit worried? >> he never came back in. >> do you think it's good that they rested him? >> i don't know. you know, if he was okay, he'd come back in. >> sit him down. we were at that point. sit him down. >> i just noticed that he was out for most of the time, second

half. >> yeah. >> this is good analysis right here. >> go warriors! >> reporter: some future sportscaster there at the end there. coming up at 5:00, we'll have more reaction from fans. they hope this is the beginning of another championship run. live in oakland, pete suratos. >> for more on the playoff run, head to our website, nbcbayarea.com. there you can find photos and videos of the team's historic season. and now to a developing story in a normally quiet south bay city. santa clara sheriff's deputies say they have discovered a body behind a business in saratoga. the body was found behind a pet salon downtown. they're calling it suspicious as they search for answers. nbc bay area's chuck coppola is live at the scene with what we're hearing about so far. sounds like neighbors are pretty stunned to hear about this. >> reporter: you nailed it, it's a quiet community in the south bay, but rarely do you see this many deputies here. we're next to the sar saratoga

village center and next to the chamber of commerce. behind it, down this driveway, along big basin way are a lot of sheriff's deputies who have been here all afternoon. it's behind the chamber where a passerby smelled a very strong odor coming from a storage area here. deputies were called at about 11:00 a.m., found the body of a man who had died. the customer of one nearby business who told me he knew the man says that he was about 50 to 55 years old, caucasian and is related or connected, rather, to one of the owners of one of the nearby businesses. we have so far not confirmed this. the sheriff's department has not confirmed this, either, nor whether the man had any wounds that may have been fatal. >> he has been deceased for some time now. out of abundance of caution, we called out our homicide detectives and csi team, but right now, we just consider it a suspicious death. >> reporter: one shopkeeper told me she noticed the smell monday. that grew stronger during the

week. i mentioned, sheriff's deputies have been here all afternoon, but so far not saying much. the body is still here. the medical examiner has been called. and so far, we have heard no reports of gunfire or of any emergency 911 calls prior to the deputies showing up. reporting live in saratoga, chuck coppola, "nbc bay area news." >> thank you, chuck. a fast-moving fire forced seven people out of two homes in pittsburg. firefighters say a gas main caught fire in one house. the flames spread to the neighboring one. it happened shortly after 5:00 this morning on raindrop circle just off willow pass road. firefighters say when crews arrived, both homes were engulfed in flames. the homeowners all managed to get out safely. nobody injured. the damage estimate right around 400,000. and in the south bay, firefighters quickly put out a brush fire burning near the mountain of loma prieta in santa clara county. our camera showing thick smoke from the fire that broke out

before 9:00 this morning. cal fire say the fire destroyed an out building and burned about a half acre of brush. a man suspected of burglarizing two apartments in san francisco's in the hospital tonight after a rooftop chase ended with a dramatic fall. the chase from the rooftop to rooftop happened around 9:00 this morning after several burglaries in the knob hill neighborhood. it ended when the suspect made a wild leap on to a parked car. christie smith is live in san francisco with this story. this is where former secretary of state clinton was, in knob hill last night. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, and we're talking about quite a distance here, from the roof of this building behind me. and neighbors say the man tried to go towards the tree, fell and hit the car, the parked audi across the street. now, believe it or not, police are saying this man suffered nonlife-threatening injuries, and this all started when they got a burglary call this morning before 9:00 this morning in the neighborhood on pacific street and located some stolen luggage

on t roof. then they got a second burglary call nearby, someone saying he was held at gunpoint and he fled. the man pointed the gun at officers. they ordered him to drop it but he didn't. no shots were fired. he ran on to a roof, police say, there was a foot chase roof to roof. he dropped the gun on the roof and police say he kept trying to get away. neighbors say they woke up to police activity and a man who police say tried to jump. >> broke in the door, went across a couple of roofs to the corner building, tried to jump in the tree, and that's when he fell, and i don't know what kind of damage he got, but he was taken away on a stretcher. >> reporter: that man ended up where we are, here at pacific and hyde. again, three stories down. neighbors say he tried to grab a branch, that's what they think, and that it snaps on his way down. police were able to flag down firefighters if the area. the man taken to sf general, again, expected to revive. police say when he's released, he'll likely face multiple

charges, including burglary, false imprisonment, assault and resisting arrest. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "nbc bay area news." >> what a story. christie, thank you very much. let's turn to the weather and a beautiful day across the bay area today. take a look at the golden gate bridge. not only does it look beautiful, probably feels darn good. probably some wind blowing there. >> i would say so, considering we've got it down here. >> it's been blowing around the bay area. rob mayeta has the latest on the warm-up we're experiencing. >> the warm-up is thanks to winds blowing offshore. micro climate's in the north bay showing you 80s and upper 80s. look at that view from belvedere, 79 degrees. looking back to san francisco where we're seeing temperatures around downtown in the upper 70s right now and clear skies out to the coast, ocean beach popular place today. temperatures in the mid-70s. over towards the east bay, walnut creek right now 80 degrees. and you can see no matter where you are in the bay area, you're really seeing the same temperatures. upper 70s to mid-80s around the

east bay right now and similar temperatures around the south bay, right into san jose, 80 degrees. mid-80s around santa clara. there's the view of the hazy skies right now. so, the weekend starting off with these temperatures in the upper 70s to mid-80s. overall 8 to 14 degrees warmer than the same time yesterday. so, it's the wind direction that's important here as we head through the next 12 hours or so. we're going to see the winds turn strongly offshore again during the day tomorrow, which means even though the day will begin with temperatures in the 50s, by around lunchtime tomorrow, we'll see numbers approaching 80. so, warming up more quickly for your sunday forecast, and we could be closing in on close to 90-degree temperatures tomorrow afternoon. we'll show you where and how long the heat will stick around in your forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> all right, looking forward to that. i love this, the whole crew back together. >> yeah. >> where have you been, terry? it's been a long time. >> backpacking. i'll tell you about it during the break. >> okay, looking forward to that. next, bernie sanders meets with the pope. what the democratic presidential candidate is saying about that meeting. also, hillary clinton continuing her visit to

(inhales cigarette) well, fresh off a visit here to san francisco, democratic front-runner hillary clinton continued her fund-raising trip to los angeles today. mrs. clinton met cheering crowds both inside and outside at southwest college, a two-year school that awards associate degrees. she told her supporters she thinks the upcoming presidential election is the most consequential one in quite some time. she also called upon the crowd to help her win california's june primary. >> but here's what we need to do, we need to get all this energy -- if we could bottle it, we would be really fortunate, because there's so much here, so much of it outside. we need to get all this energy and get to work for a big victory in california. >> last night, clinton was in

san francisco's knob hill for a pricey fund-raiser co-hosted by george and amal clooney. bernie supporters protested the event. tonight clinton will appear at another fund-raiser hosted by the clooneys at their studio city home. meantime, her competitor, bernie sanders, spent the day at the vatican. the democratic presidential candidate briefly met with pope francis. the pope was quick to point out that the meeting did not involve politics, but he was being courteous meeting with senator sanders. later, senator sanders said it was an honor. >> told him that i was very appreciative of the incredible role that he is playing in this planet, in discussing issues about the need for an economy based on morality, not on greed. >> sanders was in rome to attend the vatican conference on economic inequality and climate change. well, pope francis made a dramatic visit today to a refugee center on the greek

island of lesbos and returned to rome with 12 syrian refugees. nbc's bill neely reports that the pope's humanitarian gesture had political overtones. >> reporter: this was a short but dramatic visit by pope francis to the very front line of the migrant crisis here on the greek island of lesbos, and it ended in dramatic fashion with the pope taking back with him on the plane to rome 12 syrian muslim migrants. earlier, extraordinary scenes as the pope went inside the razor wire and the high walls and sensors of a detention camp in lesbos, temporary home to 3,500 migrants who are not allowed to leave. they are held there against their will, and many of them are likely to be deported. the pope met hundreds of them. >> thank you, god, thank you! >> reporter: quite dramatic scenes. he has said that he is there to

wasn't beautiful enough, this weekend there is extra incentive to grab the kids, head over to a national park. starting today, admission will be free through next sunday, the 24th. this is all part of the celebration of national parks week. there are more than 400 parks across the country. 27 of them are in beautiful california. nine of them are in the bay area, including near woods, which is a must-stop-in. the national parks service, by the way, celebrates its 100th birthday this august. i love the whole national parks story and history. it's really remarkable. >> yeah. and are you talking about the great weather in addition to the free admission? let's check in with meteorologist rob mayeda right now and see how gorgeous it's going to be. >> and the warmest weather we'll see over the next seven days happening right now as we wrap up the weekend and still close to 80 degrees around the peninsula. there you see the sunshine. a few high clouds approaching from the west. 82 degrees still around the north bay, san jose 79 degrees. looking pretty nice with hazy sunshine looking to the south. around dublin, 78 degrees. what's pretty interesting here

is you're not seeing much of a difference from san francisco to dublin. sometimes that can be as much as 20 degrees, but with the winds turning offshore, still 77 in san francisco. look at the sunshine atop mt. tam. heading out, the coast is still clear. wave heights are 10 to 12 feet, but clear skies as the winds have picked up for you out of the northwest. but during the day tomorrow, we'll see that shifting again offshore. so, it's helped to really clear out our skies, and if high pressure is anchored in just to our north, we have this weather pattern now as winds are turning offshore, sinking, warming air aloft underneath that ridge of high pressure, keeping it toasty to wrap up the weekend. meantime, the rockies a mess with heavy snow and severe weather on the outer fringe of that system moving into texas and the southern plains tomorrow. for the bay to tomorrow morning, mostly clear skies, 50s to start and then quickly transitioning to t-shirt weather. 80s as we approach noon tomorrow. eventually, mid-to-upper 80s in san jose. in fact, near saratoga and los

gateos, we may get close to 90 tomorrow. i'll be watching that towards late tomorrow afternoon and evening. 86 in san jose, mid-80s around the peninsula, san francisco upper 70s. of course, we have got the cherry blossom festival under way as conditions are in the upper 70s. robert and mike out there with nbc bay area, 1:00 sunday. might want to check that out in japantown in san francisco for your sunday. as we show you temperatures around the north bay and east bay, mid-80s around the north bay and santa rosa, oakland 75 degrees, mid-to-upper 80s around the tri-valley. speaking of oakland, the a's game looking kind of warm, too. first pitch at 1:05, temperatures running into the mid-80s as that game wraps up. so, into monday we'll see one more warm day around the bay area. sunday dropping -- sunday in the 80s around san francisco, mid-70s by monday. and then notice wednesday beginning to see at least a slight chance of showers there. cooler temperatures as we begin to see the pattern change once we get out of the weekend. so, the warmest days of the next seven, as you can see on the bottom of the screen of the seven-day forecast, hanging on

into monday. then this relatively weak system dropping by tuesday will pump up the sea breeze and cool us off. then the best system in the series coming in thursday night and friday to remind us that, yes, it is still spring around the bay area. we'll see our best chance for rain coming up out of the system here thursday night into friday. we should also be cold enough for a little more sierra snow. that's going to be friday into early saturday. right now as you make plans for the end of the week, there's the best chance for seeing rain totals, which we're hoping that is right, about a half inch or more possible during the day friday. just in case you're making outdoor plans for next weekend, right now we'll see the rain showers come back friday. saturday and sunday, clearing skies once again, 60s to 70s. so, next weekend's forecast looks pretty good, 60s and 70s, but not as warm as the one we're seeing right now. those are the changes over the next seven days. tomorrow's highs, could be closing in on some records in the south bay as temperatures climb into the upper 80s to near 90 downtown san jose to wrap up the weekend. >> how about that? >> looking good.

rescue efforts still under way after two powerful earthquakes struck southwestern japan. rescue crews are dealing with aftershocks and the threat of heavy rain as they race to find survivors. at least 41 people were killed, some 1,500 injured in two earthquakes that struck kumamoto prefecture late thursday and another one early saturday. the quakes flattened houses and triggered major landslides in the region. the earthquake registered a magnitude 7.0. thursday's quake, 6.2. some 20,000 troops have been deployed to try to rescue people trapped under collapsed buildings. a florida zoo is closed for the weekend after a tiger killed a zookeeper there. stacey konwiser was the lead

tigerkeeper at the palm beach zoo. police say the attack happened on friday when she was doing her daily tasks in the tiger night house. that's where the animals sleep and also feed. zoo officials are still unclear as to what triggered the attack. >> this involved a male ma lane tiger here at palm beach zoo. we have four of them. there are less than 250 in the wild. this is an endangered species that stacey dedicated her life to. >> an investigation into konwiser's death is now under way. the tiger involved was tranquilized and is now recovering at the zoo. zoo officials say the animal was never on the loose and that no visitors could see what happened. new recommendations tonight for college athletic programs in order to reduce the number of sudden cardiac deaths. a study published in "the journal of the american college of cardiology" recommends referral centers be established for colleges without cardiology experts on hand. it also calls for each school to have an emergency action plan in case an athlete suffers cardiac arrest. this includes training first

responders and making sure there's proper access to defibrillators. the ncaa currently does not require ekg screenings for athletes. well, prince william and kate wrapped up their week-long royal tour of india today. the duke and duchess of cambridge visited the taj mahal. they sat and smiled for photos on the same marble bench where the late prince william's mother, princess diana, of course, posed for a memorable photo in 1992. she looked rather sad and lonely during that photo. not the case today with this couple. william told photographers that the moment was stunning and the monument also stunning. the british royals are scheduled to fly back to london tonight. a strong smell from a storage area, and now a lot more deputies than they usually see in the south bay community not known for violent crime. i'm chuck coppola. the story and the place, coming up. the warriors beat the rockets in game one of the opening round of the nba playoffs right here at oracle arena. live reaction from the fans, coming up.
