>> announcer: nbc bay area news starts now. right now in this special edition of nbc bay area news, the warriors win big but at what cost? steph curry suffers an injury as fans hold their breath. complete coverage is straight ahead. but first -- >> two of their friends just took them. >> a day at the beach turns into an all-out search for two teenagers swept into the ocean. good evening, everyone. >> we do start with that developing story in san francisco where the search for those teenagers is now entering its fourth hour and time is running out. tonight we have team coverage for you. rob mayeda is standing by at ocean beach. first christy smith has the

latest on the rescue mission. what do we know right now? >> reporter: we just got an update from the coast guard just a couple of minutes ago and san francisco fire department. what they're telltioning is us right now there are boats in the water and helicopters in the air. they have been searching for several hours for two 17-year-old young men. but it appears what they're saying is they will likely be suspending this search when it gets completely dark. you can see how dark it is now. they're thinking within the next 30 minutes or so. now, this started this afternoon at around 4:20. that's when distress calls started coming in requesting emergency help in the surf for five teenagers. what they're telling us is they friends locked arms and went in the water. and that's when they were swept out. they were about knee-deep or waist-deep. three of them made it out, 17-year-old and two 18-year-olds. they were taken to the hospital as a precaution. but then two 17-year-olds did

not make it out. so the coast guard and fire rescue were out here first responders in the water, in the air. they've been searching for this entire time, but no sign of them. we're told that the family has been notified of what's occurred. coast guard says that family actually describes them as not strong swimmers, the two 17-year-olds that they were still looking for. a very busy day here at the beach because of the warm weather, and of course ocean beach known for its represent curre rip currents. we're seeing the first responders driving away, but we're told they will be be suspending this search very soon. certainly not the ending anyone wanted. that's the latest reporting live at ocean beach, nbc bay area news. >> thanks very much. we continue our team coverage with meteorologist rob mayeda. rob, how are the conditions right now at ocean beach? >> well, we've been watching those temperatures during the day and also the sign behind advising rip currents being a

possibility on ocean beach. on days like this, warm temperatures around midday climb noog the 70s out there with mostly sunny skies, generally good visibility, the wave heights 6 to 10 feet and water temperatures in the low 50s. those are rough conditions, sometimes larger waves coming in, could easily get knocked down by sneaker waves at times. we're seeing wave heights holding steady 6 to 10 feet and during the day tomorrow we probably won't have issues with fog along the coast as the winds turn strongly offshore during the day tomorrow. so again, the ocean temperature is in the low 50s, but our daytime temperatures as early as noon tomorrow drawing more people out to the coast, 80 degrees as early as midday tomorrow. we'll talk more about some near records on the way for your sunday forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> rob, thanks very much. breaking news in the south bay right now. a standoff is under way in east san jose. >> police tell us a man has barricaded himself inside a restaurant.

chuck is live at the scene. what's going on there, chuck? >> reporter: well, this is happening at capital avenue across from the light rail station. behind me you can see some of the people who have been evacuated from the area and over there you can see a number of squad cars. this is all focusing in on the pandora cafe when about two hours ago a man came into the restaurant and then started acting very violently. about 12 squad cars are now out front. it is a standoff situation. they are calling him daniel. they're trying to get him to come out. i talked to one of the patrons inside the pandora cafe who said there were about a dozen people inside when aman came from back behind the kitchen door and started entering the restaurant area. he did not have a weapon so far as they knew at that time, but he was shirtless and he started ranti ranting and throw things. then he assaulted an employee

according to the witness inside the restaurant who i spoke with just a few moments ago. the fire department from san jose has been called as well. there is a possibility that there was a smell of gas in the cafe so the fire department was called. right now you can see here live there are a number of police officers still standing outside the nearby businesses, dollar tree, h&r block, et cetera, have been evacuated, their personnel. right now this is a standoff continuing in east san jose. reporting live, nbc bay area news. >> chuck, thanks very much. we're also following breaking news out of ecuador tonight. at least 28 people are dead after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook the area. the quake did major damage. these are some of the first images we're seeing from ecuador, video from inside a shopping mall showing people

hurrying to get outside as alarms go off. other photos appear to show an airport tower collapse. there are also reports of cracked buildings, destroyed roads. the government has declared a state of emergency in six provinc provinces. you can follow the breaking news across our digital platforms. download our nbc bay area app. after winning a record 73 games, the warriors now showed they are ready for the playoffs. the team simply clobbered the houston rockets but nearly 30 points tonight. while fans were thrilled with the win, there's some concern tonight because steph curry left the game with an injure a rnd did not plaplay in the second h. everyone will closely watch what happens when the warriors play again monday. tonight, we have team coverage for you. we start with allen smith from comcast sportsnet with more on steph's swrurry. >> it was hard to enjoy the win over the rockets after witnessing their mvp go down. the good news? nothing is broken.

but steph curry is listed as questionable for game two with an ankle injury. let's show you exactly what happened. second quarter, steph appears to tweak his right ankle here when he lands a bit awkwardly after a shot. he did return, however, very briefly at the beginning of the third quarter. but with about 9:00 left in the third, he left the game for good. for more on the injury, here's more. >> it's not right, and at risk of further injury or whatnot, that's the only thing that i think we have to worry about. pain tolerance and all that stuff is -- i kind of know what i can deal with on the court. but you don't want anything more serious to happen, you know, favoring an ankle or whatnot. that's what we're kind of paying attention to the next two days. >> now, there was a ton of physical play from both sides today. several technicals were handed out. but steph curry andray draymond

agreed that the rockets were not playing drty. they said it was the playoff, supposed to be physical. can't argue with that. guys, back to you. oracle arena is quiet now, but hours ago about 20,000 fans packed oracle to watch the warriors. as pete reports, they're setting their sights on another championship. >> reporter: the pregame shootaround at oracle arena drew a crowd for guess who? who's your favorite player? >> stephen curry. >> reporter: this 6-year-old is a big steph curry fan. today's game was her first ever basketball game. >> she's very excited. she's bragging. >> reporter: the warriors opened up the nba playoffs in blowout fashion, beating the houston rockets 104-78. >> warriors are playing good defense, good offense.

>> it was awesome. we really got into it. >> reporter: but some fans were a bit concerned afterwards, especially after curry left the game with an ankle yoinjury. >> i'm worried about that, a little bit. he never came back in. >> reporter: dow think was good they rested him? >> i don't know. if he was okay, he'd come back in. >> old school. that's what happened to my warriors throwback jersey. >> reporter: this is a lifetime fan who was here last year and she's cheered for this team through the thick and thin. >> in the baron davis days and don nelson. >> reporter: while last year's championship run was special, she expects the home crowd to bring that same type of energy this year. >> just the mere thought of winning back-to-back titles, man, that's electric. >> the next game of the playoffs monday night at oracle. there are still tickets left on the warriors' resale market, the cheapest seat about 140 bucks.

>> wow. in san francisco, a leap of faith or a leap of desperation? after a suspected burglar running from rooftop to rooftop tried to get away from police and made a wild leap off a rooftop but missed, he fell several stories onto a parked car below. he did survive with nonlife threatening injuries. this is the car he fell onto. you can see the damage. he actually fell through a tree. he was trying to grab onto it and to that back window. it all started about 9:00 this with two reports of burglaries in san francisco's knob hill neighborhood. in the second break-in, the burglar held his victim at gun point before fleeing. police caught up with the suspect and chased him on the rooftops. >> broken door. wept across the roof to the corner building. tried to jump in the tree and that's when he fell. i don't know what kind of damage he got but he was taken away on a stretcher. >> officers say when the suspect is released he will likely face multiple charges including burglary, false imprisonment,

assault and resisting arrest. a body found behind a building in downtown saratoga, tonight police are looking into how the man died. someone found the body today behind a pet salon on big basin way. homicide detectives and cs i-teams were on scene all day investigating. they're not saying exactly how the man died just yet, just that the death appears to be suspicious. the man had been dead for some time. people in the area actually reported a bad smell starting monday that only got worse. seven people are out of their homes tonight because of a fast moving house fire. it started just after 5:00 this morning in pittsburg. firefighters say a gas main caught fire at a home. the fire spread to a neighboring home. everyone in the house wrz able to get out safely. but both homes were engufled in flames. firefighters put out the fire. >> uc davis students are mad the school paid to try to hide a notorious pepper spray incident on the internet. coming up, the charngs they're

calling for and the vocal way they demanded them. bernie sanders and the pope. why the presidential hopeful is taking time away from the busy campaign trail to head to the vatican. and we're still seeing a pretty mild 71 degrees in san jose as many locations compare 24 hours ago running many degrees warmer, 10 degrees warmer than this time yesterday and we'll see similar warming for tomorrow that could put some places close to 90 degrees. we'll show you where in our forecast when we come right back.

>> announcer: uc davis leaders are under fire again for their handling of a student protest that turned into a national controversy. if you remember back in 2011, students demonstrating were pepper sprayed by campus police. turns out the administration paid consultants at least $175,000 to scrub the internet of the incident of the last night the university of california student association voted to call for the

chancellor's resignation or firing. and today students protested during the school's annual parade. >> our chancellor is heavily corrupt. we want to see her gone because she doesn't represent the students the staff or faculty. >> chancellor linda ka te'i here refused to comment other than saying a response would be maid public monday. turning now to decision 2016, democratic front-runner hillary clinton is at another high-priced fund raiser co-hosted by george clooney this time at his home in los angeles. earlier today, clinton addressed enthusiastic supporters at l.a.'s southwest college. she called the upcoming election the most consequential in quite some time because of the huge gap in democratic and republican thinking. >> everything i have fought for my entire life, everything i stand for in my public service, everything i will do as your president is exactly the opposite of what they say and

how they treat people and what they want to see happen in our country. >> meanwhile, sanders spent another day at the vatican which included a brief meeting with pope francis. >> today certainly was the highlight of the trip. i think he will go down in history as one of the great leaders of this moment in world history. >> yesterday bernie sanders delivered a version of his stump speech at a vatican conference. on the republican side of the race, ted cruz won 14 out of 14 delegates up for grabs at today's wyoming state convention. the texas senator was the only candidate who made the trip to casper ahead of the vote. it is another setback for donald trump who needs to capture 1237 delegates to clinch the republican nomination. so far, trump has 756. >> hundreds of california workers are going to be out of a job. sports chalet is closing all of its 51 stores. 40 of them are in california, 2 here in the bay area.

one is in san jose and the other in pleasanton. the sporting good company says the stores will only be open for a few more weeks. it has locations in california arizona nevada and utah. well, a beautiful night tonight, a lot of people outside having dinner maybe a little picnic. take a look from san francisco, the sunset tonight if you were out taking a look, oranges, pinks, reds. just a beautiful night. >> gorgeous down here in san jose, too. fantastic. meteorologist rob mayeda is here. >> we were tweeting some of those sunsets, and in fact we saw the sunny skies change over to high cloud thz evening which made for the beautiful pictures earlier. mild temperatures outside, upper 60s and low 70s despite the fact we had a pretty chilly start to the morning. ocean beach to one side, pleasanton on the right starting off in the 40s and 50s. as the day went on, notice the numbers going up into the 70s around midday and mid to upper 80s around pleasanton.

ocean beach 70, 87, a warm finish around the tri-valley and the wind is what we're watching for tomorrow. it will turn offshore again during the day, which means near the coast 70 degree temperatures are possible and inland especially across the tri-valley and south bay we will see numbers climbing into the midto upper 80s. high pressure now keeping our skies mostly clear, a few high clouds spilling over the ridge. with the offshore breezes in place through about monday we're going to see the warmest weather of the next seven days. for the end of the weekend and at least one more day into the workweek. so 50s to start tomorrow morning. then as early as lunchtime tomorrow upper 70s to low 80s. and eventually mid-80s expected around downtown san jose tomorrow, upper 80s around morgan hill and los gatos. a couple of spots close to 90 degrees, around 4:00 tomorrow. peninsula and san francisco temperatures in the 70s, perfect for the cherry blossom festival, maybe a little on the warm side. you'll hope for a sea breeze late in the day but the winds

offshore. for the east bay, tri-valley and north bay, highs mostly in the 80s, including oakland mid-80s, a's game weather looks great, warm temperatures mid-80s through the game with those winds out of the northeast. so the headline here, hot weather through about monday, cooling comes tuesday. then our best chance for seeing some rain, thursday into friday. so the next five days, san jose we will be seeing again those temperatures staying warm into monday and tuesday, then we'll add on five more days for you. notice friday the best chance for seeing some rain next weekend, skies begin to clear. north bay locations will have the best bet for seeing greater rain chances, wednesday, thursday into friday. and that thursday/friday event looks bay areawide as we get into friday morning, skies begin to clear as we head toward next weekend. this late-week system toward the end of the seven-day forecast has the chance to perhaps bring about a half inch of rain into the picture. if you're making plans for next

in a rematch, game one round one was a cakewalk for the warriors. they took the fuel out of the rockets early and never looked back. let's take you to oracle. game one warriors/rockets. steph curry pretty relaxed before the game. fourth quarter up 12, curry in transition pulls up, oh, yeah, money from trayville. curry off the screen, quick release, that's good. warriors up 20. later, curry shakes free. nothing but net. curry had 24 points in the first half. but some trouble for curry at the end of the half. after a shot, he lands awkwardly on his right ankle. medical staff checked out his ankle on the bench. curry would then go back into the locker room. but the good news, curry returned to the bench and appeared to be in good spirits late in the game. warriors go on to win big 104-78.

's a competitor. he wants to play. >> in the second half i felt like i could go out there and be somewhat effective on the court, you know. it was painful, but to me it wasn't anything that was going to keep me out. coach made a decision regardless of what i had to say to sit me out. obviously we had a nice lead to work with, which was helpful. but as a competitor i was ready to go back in and give them what i had. talking to the trainers, knowing that hopefully like i was talking about earlier put myself at risk of another injury or making it worse. but we were able to -- the other guys stepped up and we were able
