"early today" starts right now. good morning, i'm dara brown. new york belongs to donald trump and hillary clinton. trump dominated the republican primary winning 61% of the vote. john kasich was in second.

and no surprise, voters sent new york values ted cruz a clear message. clinton won handedly. she defeated sanders 52 to 42%. she thanked her adopted home state while pivoting to the general election. >> today, you proved once again there is no place like home. to all the people who supported senator sanders, i believe there is much more that unites us than divides us. tonight, a little less than a year later, the race for the democratic nomination is in the homestretch, and victory is in sight. >> clinton picked up 136 delegates in new york to sanders 105, edging her closer to the nomination. six delegates remain

unallocated. clinton also picked up a super delegate in illinois. sanders returned home to vermont but says he isn't going any where. >> over the last 11 and a half months, this campaign has come a very, very long way. so we lost tonight. there are five primaries next week. we think we're going to do well. and we have a path toward this victory, which we are going to fight to maintain. >> sanders campaign manager, jeff we'aver outlined it with steve kornacki. >> obviously the big state here is california. i mean, big win there, get you delegates, oregon is a state that should be good for the senator. these states, we have a won all the states around these states, so it would be prime territory for the senator.

he has doing increasingly well with latinos. new next mexico, indiana, it's possible to run these states. new jersey had a lot of delegates. >> if june 7th comes and goes and she has won the delegates and popular votes, there will be calls from her campaign for the sanders campaign to unite around her. you're saying instead of that, you'll spend those weeks in the summer trying to flip super delegates to bernie sanders before the convention? >> at this point, yes, absolutely. >> on the republican side, trump said it was vital he win big in new york, and he did. >> i have to say to the people that know me the best, the people of new york, when they give us this kind of a vote, and it's just incredible. i really want to thank my team. my team has been amazing, and you know, it's actually a team of unity. it's evolving, but people don't

understand that. we don't have much of a race any more, based on what i'm seeing on television. senator cruz is just about mathematically eliminated. we're really, really rocking. we expect we're going to have an amazing number of weeks. we're going to go into the convention, i think as the winner. >> trump picked up 88 delegates in new york, as he expands his lead on the field and marches closer to the 1,237 needed for the nomination. kasich picked up three, while cruz was shut out. the race pivots to next tuesday's contest, connecticut, maryland, pennsylvania, and rhode island up for grabs. let's bring in best selling author. >> good morning. >> a big new york morning here. what did these decisive wins for

trump and clinton. >> their opponents hit the wall. wisconsin represented wisconsin, and not much else. it means that both of them are romping on. >> can he get enough delegates? >> it seems a whole more likely this morning than it did 24 hours ago, doesn't it? the math is kind of on the line. it could go either way. it is -- momentum is heading in his direction. it's more possible now. >> if current polling holds, cruz is eliminated from a first ballot. can he on a second ballot win at a contested convention? >> math or politics? the math is possible, the politics are less and less likely. but you know what, you get all those republicans in a big room in cleveland, anything is possible. >> well, let's turn to the democrats now, because bernie sanders says that he is pushing forward, claiming he can take the pledged delegate lead on

june 7th. how does that math work? >> again, have to go back to maybe junior year in high school. it's getting harder and harder for bernie. you know, hillary i think really is uniting the democratic party. now, if only she could get the bernie supporters to come around. it's just looking like a tough argument for bernie at this point. >> well, will we see sanders camp shift tactics? he said he will not run a negative campaign, but he could resort to mud slinging in the final push. >> the last week or so has been pretty rough between them. he is headed back to vermont last night. i'm sure he is doing a lot of soul searching there in burlington. he has to figure out what kind of tone does he want to maintain over the next few weeks. pretty much in his hands, i think. >> very interesting. not over until it's over. thank you so much for your input. >> great to see you.
