some peaks of sunshine and rain moving in tomorrow. not as cool as the last few mornings. you feel it's milder. it's 60 in san francisco with high of the 67. breezy winds. mostly cloudy and peeks of sunshine. we'll talk about those showers and what else to expect in the microclimate forecast. another rough day. >> we did have the earlier car fire. for the carquinez bridge we had a couple of crashes. i want to let you know how traffic has impacted. there is a current crash closing eastbound 80. chp lets you get off the freeway and back on. you can access the carquinez bridge from crockett.

your option to avoid it is the longer way 680, take 780 back. you don't want to do that. exercise extreme caution. it's been a busy and tragic morning. we are covering it as breaking news overnight. those two separate crashes plaguing an east bay highway. more pictures to show you. first an ambulance slammed into the back of a construction truck on interstate 80. hours later, a four-car pile-up leaving at least one person dead. >> bob joining us live from the scene. >> about a minute ago all four lanes of eastbound 80 before were shut down. in the past few moments, chp opened up the number four lane. this is because of this accident

involving a big rig and four other vehicles. this happened around 3:20 this morning. chp is not sure if this was related to the backup of that ambulance accident you were mentioning. what happened was this involved a big rig and it ran over a small mazda car killing the driver inside that car. there were three other vehicles involved in this accident. the people in those vehicles were treated and released. chp not sure if this is related to the video you are seeing right now of the accident that took place at 1:30. an ambulance with two people inside ran into the back of a construction vehicle just before the carquinez bridge. there is a lot of construction going on there slammed into the back of that. there were no patients inside but the two people in the ambulance, a nurse and driver were both taken to the hospital with major injuries, considered life-threatening at the time.

the fire captain does expect them to pull through. given how severe this accident was, it took 45 minutes to remove them from that ambulance. they were on their way to houston davis to pick up a neo natal patient to bring him back to the city. two accidents, one at the carquinez has been cleared. one going to wait for a coroner to remove the body stuck underneath the big rig to get all three lanes opened here. three lanes shut down eastbound 80. bob redell for "today in the bay." >> very tragic news. new this morning, police investigating how a car overturned and ended up in a south bay creek. this happened in mountain view in the area of san antonio road and terminal boulevard. the car had been pulled out but there was no sign of a driver. police are saying nothing about what might have happened or if anyone was injured. 5:03.

another homicide investigation under way in san jose. this is a third one in the matter of days. officers say a father was stabbed to death by his own son. it happened at the milton mobile home park at 9:00. the son was taken into custody. we'll stay on top of this story throughout the morning. kris sanchez will join us at 5:30. frustrated by no leads in an old murder case, police released this video of a group of eight men on surveillance video. investigators suspect they may have stabbed michael maynard to death. an arrest in a double shooting case out of berkeley. a license plate reader tracked the suspect's car to a denny's parking lot in sacramento. they found anthony burton sleeping inside wanted for the

march 16th shooting of two people. both victims survived. police have not given a motive for the shooting, but burton will be in court today. the trial begins monday for the man accused of killing sierra lamar, four years after the teenager's disappearance. police arrested garcia shortly after lamar went missing while heading to school in 2012. prosecutors say physical evidence proves torres kidnapped and killed lamar. her body still has not been found. those who spent years searching for lamar are looking for closure. >> we are eager for justice. we are eager for closure for the family. >> the murder trial will take place at the santa clara hall of justice in san jose. the defense may try to move the case. new details on the so-called drifters accused of killing a hiker and canadian tourist. their lawyers are trying to lock

the media out of preliminary hearings. attorneys claim the news coverage is threatening to taint the jury pool. judge will make a ruling may 9 when the hearings begin. all three suspects are accused of robbing and killing andre kerry and steve carter last year. it is 5:06. a concord dental assistant facing child molestation charges. investigators say he molested a sedated 8-year-old girl at the dental office where he worked. more victims have come forward. he remains in jail in martinez on $8 million bail. a san jose high school track coach andy garcia will be in court accused of having sexual relationships with two students at mt. pleasant high school. garcia will be in court for a plea hearing. after the smoke clears, mostly good vibes at yesterday's 420 celebration in san francisco, but one man who

briefly triggered panic may not face charges. close to 10,000 people turning out for yesterday's celebration of all things marijuana in golden gate park. that momentary scare happened about 6:00 last night. park workers say a man pulled out a gun briefly sending people running. we are told shots were never fired and police took the man and the gun into custody. other concerns had to do mostly with lots of litter left behind. >> the city could come in here and do something, you know, get things cleaned up. >> trash is everywhere i really don't like it. >> workers are expected to finish cleanup this morning. we'll bring you a live report in our next half hour. sunny vibes and solar-powered plane will be arriving in mountain view in the future. >> it's been traveling since march of last year but has been stranded in hawaii because of a fried battery. it's been fix and the swiss

the freeway opened one lane in crockett toward the carquinez bridge. you are seeing the aftermath of the deadly crash. the second of two crashes in the area we'll give you the update coming up. we'll keep checking back with you. what happens today in the south bay may change the direction of the high speed rail project. they'll adopt a new business man and consider the buildout plan. instead of building the first leg south, the line might be stretched north initially to san jose. rail leaders believe a northbound system would be more viable and can easily be built. a settlement is near between uber and passengers who rely on guide dogs. >> advocates for the blind have accused uber driver discriminating against blind passengers and their four-legged helpers.

they filed suit in 2014. uber denied those claims. the chronicle talked with an aattorney who said an agreement will be reached before the trial gets started. the scandal offer volkswagen's diesel cars moving to a san francisco courtroom today. volkswagen expected to announce an agreement with the u.s. government. the a.p. is reporting the german car maker would pay over $1 billion. the money would be used to compensate owners, about 600,000 diesel cars. volkswagen admits it cheated on an emission test. we have known it pays to work in silicon valley. >> new numbers show the highest paying companies in the country are here. >> tech pays well. that's why we push that education and costs a lot. juniper networks tops the list of tech companies when it comes to median pay. these guys pay $17:00,000 in total compensation each year,

we are going to go from the 70s for inland temperatures to the 60s along the coast. the 60s shift inland tomorrow as that rain moves in. it will be cooler and start to rebound just a bit as we head into the weekend. also as we have mild weather we have the risk of rip currents today. make sure you're careful. we could have sneaker waves and large storm breaks. we'll have snow in the sierra. winter storm watch in effect for tomorrow and also high winds. winter weather watch as we are looking at four to eight inches of snow above 6,000 feet. there may be higher at the peaks. the snowfall totals for this weekend give us about 4-5 inches. south lake tahoe could measure close to a foot of snow by this time next week. a lot of snow in the forecast. scattered showers here. it clears out in time for

and starting to bring in the story of our country's history. harriet tubman who fought for fee freedom, she fought for the right for women to vote. she will be featured on the $20 bill. it was originally the $10 the treasury department was looking to change. that was a lot of backlash about alexander hamilton. groups wanted him to stay. now hamilton stays on the $10. on the back of the $10 will be a group of women suffrageates. it's not going to happen soon. it's going to take until 2020 just to get the design on these bills. they have a lot of technology

two crashes in a matter of hours on interstate 80 one involving a children's hospital ambulance.. breaking overnight two crashes in a mile. one involved a children's hospital ambulance. we are live with the very latest. good morning. thank you for joining us on this thursday morning. >> let's get a check of our weather this morning, fair weather maybe? >> more clouds this morning. it's now in the mid 50s. even some of those 60s starting out the day. as we go in the rest of the day, temperatures will hold steady and slowly rising into the

afternoon. not a major swing. more clouds mixing in with the sun. breezy winds. also looking out for the chance of spotty light rain in north bay before the whole bay area gets covered with the rain into the day tomorrow. i'll talk about that rain and what it looks like for the weekend. >> the bay bridge is the biggest civil backup we have now. metering lights on. let's show you the map. you'll see there are no other major issues south of the bay bridge. there is your morning commute. this is atypical, the amount of slowing south of the carquinez bridge. as far as interstate 80, this is westbound. spectators going by the crash there. that is unusual when the event started early.

bob redell is out there. a few minutes ago you said one lane is open but sounds like we have changes. >> right. within the past few moments, chp opened up the second lane. right now you have the two far right lanes opened here. this is just before the coming skyway. the two left lanes remain closed. it could be a few hours before those two lanes are opened. the coroner needs to examine and remove the body of a driver still underneath that big rig. the big rig itself has to be removed. this happened around 3:20 this morning. the big rig and mazda were caught up in the backup caused by on original accident involving an accident. traffic was trying to merge into the far right lane. that's when the big rig ran over the mazda and crushed the

driver. not clear how fast the big rig was going at the time. three other cars completely unrelated crashed into each other on the shoulder of the road at roughly the same spot. they were treated and released. >> in situations like this, we ask all drivers to pay attention to the road, slow down. make sure you are focused on what is in front of you compared to what is on the side of you. once you are distracted, something like this can happen. >> around 1:30 there was an ambulance who slammed into the back of a construction vehicle doing work at the base of the carquinez on eastbound 80. it took firefighters 40 minutes to extricate both people from the wrecked ambulance. both were taken to the hospital with major injuries. the ambulance was not transporting patients at the time. they were on the way to uc davis to pick up a neonatal patient.

you have the original ambulance accident earlier this morning that chp believe led to the two accidents behind me. the one fatal involving the big rig. it could be a couple of hours before the two left lanes of eastbound 80 çreopen here. live in crockett, bob redell "today in the bay." >> new this morning, a four-on-twosome discovery after an early morning fire in the east bay. investigators tell us one person is dead after a fire broke out at a two-story warehouse after 3:00. this happened on 66th avenue in oakland right near oracle arena. the identity of the victims has not been released. a developing story in the south bay and string of violence in san jose. the third homicide in just the last week. the most recent leaving a man stabbed to death off vael spring

drive. >> kris sanchez is live at the police department. >> we know in this particular act of violence there is no imminent danger to the public because police were able to arrest the suspect and that happened between a father and son. it was reported around 9:07 last night. san jose police responding to a mobile home park. what they found was a father allegedly stabbed by his own adult son. that son whose name is not released yet was arrested at the scene. no danger to the public. that is not necessarily the case in the last two homicides in san jose. the gunman who shot a 21-year-old meeting someone about a puppy for sale monday night, that gunman is still at large. so is the gunman who killed

antonio castro on lyndale avenue saturday night. witnesses said he was shot at least four times. san jose police have not revealed a motive in either case. the public cannot deduce the risk of having those two gunmen free in their community. 14 people have been killed on the streets of san jose this year. that outpaces the number last year. this time last year the number was eight. if anyone has any information, call it anonymously through crime stoppers. >> kris thank you so much. the man accused of running over and killing a pittsburgh mother expected to be arraigned today. chavez hit that woman on tuesday. the suspect was trying to outrun police officers. after he hit the woman, chavez drove his car through a golf course and then took off on foot. officers were able to track him down. the victim was a 65-year-old

mother out for a morning walk. she along with her husband were full time care takers of their disabled son. we spoke to a neighbor who says the family is struggling to cope. >> the con same this morning and knocked on my front door in tears. i said josh, man, i can't even imagine what you are going through right now. >> police say chavez was driving with a suspended license and is on probation from a prior dui arrest. 5:37. a concord man behind bars accused of burning a gay pride flag belonging to a church. the church says their rainbow flag has been taken down three times since monday and eight times in the past six months. according to the pastor, a note was left. >> the note was written in

we continue to follow breaking news this morning where several people were hurt in a crash involving an ambulance i-80. you see a big rig was involved as well as a mazda that was trapped underneath that. this breaking news affecting your morning commute. in less than an hour, a cleanup at golden gate park where thousands were celebrating 420 yesterday. >> today in the bay, stephanie chuang at hippie hill. how about the damage out there? it looks clean behind you. >> it does. park and rec have been out here and crews will be back at 6:30. they have to get the small stuff you can't see. cigarette butts, wrappers and papers to make sure everything is clean. they rushed to clean up last

san francisco making history. parents taking notice. >> the mayor will sign into law the landmark paid parental leave ordinance. that requires fully paid parental leave for working families. the new rules roll out gradually. it only applies to companies with more than 50 employees. by 2018 businesses with more than 20 workers are going to have to comply. san francisco becomes the first city in the country to require full benefits. >> we knew uber was disrupting the taxi cab industry. a report said in l.a. uber is relatively new in that city. replaced 30% of all taxi rides. and now another industry under pressure. >> rental cars. why rent a car when you can get around by uber? they know where they are going and you don't have to park the car. a company that processes expense reports says business people use uber more often than rental cars. certify says its clients used
