is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. seems like too often we have to start with show with sad news about the death of a musical icon. this again is one of those things, one of the most innovative, creative, stylish artists we've seen. >> any word you can think of, icon, genius, they all apply. what a shock at 57 he passed away. there are two sides to it. there is an investigation into what caused prince's death. and the outpouring, the worldwide celebration of his life and his music. natalie is outside his home in suburban minneapolis. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt and savannah. prince's paisley park recording studio has become this memorial site since the news broke said hundreds of fans have been coming here, leaving flowers and memorabilia.

the sheriff's office is investigating prince's death and an autopsy is scheduled for later today. as the world once again is asking why another music icon is gone too soon. news of the music legend's death sending shock waves around the country. in new york, fans gathered at apollo theater. in brooklyn, nearly 1,000 people swayed and hugged during a block party organized by spike lee. and on broadway, oscar winner jennifer hudson and the cast of the color purple honors the music legend with an emotional rendition of his iconic "purple rain." while the cast of the mega hit hamilton use their happy feet dancing to the upbeat "let's go crazy." the city of minneapolis awash in purple in honor of music royalty. here outside the first avenue

at first unsure of the address, describing people inside as distraught. when asked how prince died the caller says i don't know, i don't know. just last week the pop music icon greeted fans in atlanta for what would be his final public performance. one day later his plane forced to make an emergency landing in illinois. at the time he was hospitalized for what was described as the flu. ♪ purple rain >> reporter: the purple rain star trying true reassure fans held a dance party. according to attendees he referenced hiss health saying quote wait a few days before you waste any prayers. a legend who revolutionized music, gone too soon. and whose death is raising more questions than answers. among those devastated by

the lord's prayer, while he's talking about am i black or white, straight or gay. i have never seen anybody put so much together. he was incredible in that way. >> he has this incredible persona. so mysterious. matt would at mitt being in his presence intimidating. >> always nervous interviewing him. >> what was he luke in person? >> same. i'm in the room with prince and i'm nervous. i'm in the room with prince and looking at me like pipe down, we got to talk here. i was always in awe of him. it was something special. i didn't get -- i didn't get shyness, what i got was theater and mystery. you know. like he didn't love talking to the media, i know he lovinged talking to you but he wasn't a big fan of talking to the media but in private, he could go. >> he cared about issues. wasn't all about music. well music issues he broke from a company, said this is about ownership and rights. he changed his name to a symbol, he wrote the word slave on his

face during a concert. where did that come from? >> you know, he was a business genius, as much as he was a musical genius. sort of like a steve jobs in a way you know. but i don't know, man. it was -- he talked about everything from compulsory license to breaking contracts to ownership of publishing. created ways of selling music. i think he was the first, i'm sure, that would sell cd's with his tickets and because his tickets would go crazy and cause his records to go up on the charts. he played at the show his album would go to number one. a genius. >> you touched on it. i by the way, always considered you to be an incredibly fashionable guy. but this guy could dress. >> my god. it was incredible. it was a feminine fashion thing with a guy like -- something.

you don't want to bring your girl around prince. >> we talk about him and what a musical prodigy he was. it's one thing to be a virtuoso in any instrument yet he self-taught as i understand, never read music. and in his early albums played every instrument, wrote every lyric, produced the song. give us a sense of what that means. how hard that is. >> that's the most difficult thing. first, when you play every instrument that means you're playing them one at a time. so that means you're performing put his drum track down and play the entire song while he is hearing it in his head. lay the bass, then the piano and the guitar and then lay all of the background vocals and strings. it's impossible. no one can do this. >> something else that is unusual, most of the time you become a musical sensation. you go to l.a., or you come to new york or you're a motown guy or way back you're the sound of philadelphia. he stayed in minneapolis, minnesota.

>> yeah, he did. he spent a lot of time in l.a., did his first album i believe at the record plant in l.a. and he told me a story about it once. he said he was -- the phone rang and he wasn't going to answer the phone. it was chaka khan. that's how he met her doing a phone prank. he didn't move. he never left minneapolis. but he was always -- he was in new york a lot. >> and still doing tons of live shows. >> always. listen. he would do a lish show for three hours, and then leave and go to a club that night. same night. right. i mean, so you've never seen any one like this. >> did you have a clue things were wrong? >> no. the thing that bothers me about it is, the prince i know was like super healthy, vegan, wasn't an abuser of drugs, wasn't abuser of alcohol. you know, he lived right you know. he was clean and he looked young and really healthy and vibrant. so the whole thing is like very

>> let us bring in our music resident here carson daly. he is out in los angeles working on "the voice" this morning. good to see you. >> good morning, guys. >> let's go back to the '80s. there are a lot of artists, but three names stand out. prince, michael jackson and madonna. why was he different than the other two? >> wow. well, you start with his musical output, matt. prince was somebody that -- i mean, he did it all himself. if you look at "purple rain" or "1999." in the '80s, you wouldn't see this. he wrote the records. he played every instrument on the records. he was a one-man show. michael jackson had quincey jones. certainly there would be no michael without quincey. madonna was breaking grounds for female artists in the '80s, predominantly in the dance scene of new york. prince was just a step ahead. the record deal he got in the '80s speaks to this. $100 million with warner.

it was a bigger deal than both madonna and michael. >> one of the things i keep thinking about is how young he was when he had these first breaks and how much courage and confidence in himself he had, to be just totally original. >> yeah. i think he thrived on that. i think that's what was -- even at the end of the day with this lawsuit with warner bros, him fighting for his autonomy musically, you know, he wrote for so many other people. he wrote, as you said in the piece, "manic monday" for the bangels. it was important for him to produce music for himself, for others. he was going to do it on his own terms. he was fearless. my theory is him staying in the twin cities allowed him to stay at arm's length, to do things his own way. >> it's amazing in the last 24 hours, carson, so many other artists are talking about the

influence of prince had on them. as the host of trl all those years, you must have seen a ton of artists come through who had taken some little piece of prince and tried to work it into their own persona. >> matt, i think it's safe to say everybody who came through. i got to mtv in the late '90s. i was there because they played music videos. i left because they stopped playing music videos. every artist who came through on my watch, including prince, highly influenced by prince. cross genres. jazz, funk, soul, rock 'n' roll, everybody wanted to be like prince. justin timberlake you saw the other day, there was a little of prince in every song i wrote. prince wrote for alicia keys, jay-z and beyonce. he literally, you can't say this about a lot of people, he literally touched everybody. i think that's what the last 24 hours has really been about. his reach was so far, so wide. he'll be so sorely missed. >> we just have a few seconds left, carson. there has always been this rumor

for somebody who is so ageless, i couldn't believe he was 57 years old. >> i had the same reaction. >> he would have been 58 in a couple months. i thought, i'm three years older than prince? how is that possible? >> i did the math backwards. 57, that means he was only 22, 23 years old when he was putting out these revolutionary, iconic records in the early '80s, "1999" and "purple rain." natalie is outside his paisley park home and studio in suburban minneso minneapolis. >> you can see people continue to come here. they are paying tribute, leaving along memorabilia to honor prince. there are still more questions than answers this morning as to the cause of his death. he was found dead inside of his paisley park estate. the recording studio. it was about 9:43 a.m. when he was found unresponsive. a short time later, he was pronounced dead at the age of 8

57. there is an autopsy schedule d d for later today. could take weeks before the results are back. his rep is claiming prince was battling the flu for weeks. he had cancelled concerts a few weeks ago. last week, he performed what would be his last concert in atlanta. then on his return flight home from that concert, his plane was forced to make an emergency landing in illinois. he was hospitalized briefly, then he was released. a couple of hours later. the circumstances of his death, still very unclear. what is certain, as you all have been talking about all morning long, is a profound impact he has had on his fans. i was able to speak to some outside of the first avenue nightclub in minneapolis, where he filmed "purple rain," and where they're celebrating his life and legacy all weekend long. >> i've been here my whole life. i was raised on prince, my

parents. we lived down the street where where he got married. it was exciting to be here and be part of the history. >> i used to play in a funk band. we did prince covers. i have a special place in my heart for prince. had to make it out. >> maybe not ours as much as he is the generation that came before us, but any of us who can appreciate good music can understand how good prince is. >> how good he was, indeed. we talk about his musical genius. if you think about it, at the age of 12, prince had taught himself how to play 20 instruments. he, of course, would then go on to win seven grammys, sell over 100 million records worldwide. he never really stopped working. you know, or performing in the last 18 months, he released four albums and was said to be writing his memoir, "the beautiful ones," scheduled to be released in 2017. i think this morning, a photo that is resonating, and certainly touching people everywhere, was taken a few

>> to understand his impact and legacy, you have to think about all the different things he did well. let me put it this way, imagine michael jackson as a jimmy page guitar hero. put those two things together and you have a sense of what was so remarkable about prince on stage. he laid claim to music history. he was in the middle of the 1980s, broke through as a major star. had a little richard mustache, james brown's dance moves and put it in the middle of the pop charts in the 1980s. >> in looking at him and you look at social media, and the outpouring from all strata of folks, all around the world. >> right. >> why did he touch so many people? >> that's exactly what he did though. that's what his music was about. that's what he was about. it was about uniting people, crossing boundaries. crossing musical boundaries, gender boundaries, racial boundaries. if you were a megastar in the

chewy delights. only from tums. this morning on today food we're wrapping up a week of 20-minute meals. i made this supper for my family this past sunday night and put it on instagram. i got 3,000 likes. i'll try to do it for you, as well. it's pork chops, quinoa, a salad and roast eed cauliflower. takes more than 20 minutes but i'll show you. i like 2-inch thick pork chops but that's another story. take a couple of -- like three cups of water and a cup of

quinoa. pour it on in there. you're going to bring it in a simmer. just under a little bit of a boil. then take it to a simmer. put the pot on and it'll take 15 minutes to cook. it absorbs all the water. once it happens, you can throw in butter, clives and a little salt and a pepper and let it sit. fluff it with a fork and it's great. you go to the pork chops. again, a little olive oil, little salt, little pepper on each side. you're going to put these in a hot skillet. if you have a cast iron skillet, it's the greatest invention. >> i don't have one. it's the one thing i don't have. >> these are going to cook quickly. you only want them to cook two minutes per side. these have been in. you flip them over. as that -- once you flip it over, throw in a little ro rosemarrrosema rosemary. flash the garlic. >> the amount of flavor coming

out of the pork chops right now -- >> i'll tell you about the cauliflower. it's one of the great vegetables. this will take about an hour. you start it early and go do something else. basically, core it from the bottom, brush it with olive oil, salt and pepper. put it in the oven. >> what pan do you put it in? >> a cast iron skillet, a baking pan, whatever. put it in the oven at 375 for an hour. it comes browned out like that. >> it's all you have to do? >> that's it. >> real flavor to it. >> roasting a cauliflower is one of the great things that most people don't realize how good it tastes. especially when you roast it. take these out. then you've got this leftover -- some olive oil and the garlic and the rosemary. >> bring it over. >> spoon it over the top. then you have your quinoa. you've got your cauliflower. i'll flip this over. >> al, pork chops are pretty much my favorite meal on the planet. >> love them. >> that's saying something.
