weeks before a cause of death is determined. but authorities are saying they do not suspect foul play nor suicide. amc theaters showing the film "purple rain" at select theaters around the country including here in the bay area. the mercado in santa clara and the metrian in san francisco are showing the film today through thursday. the tributes to the purple one keep pouring in. this is what it sounds like when 1,000 high school choir students honor prince. ♪ purple rain purple rain snuptss from 31 schools in los angeles sent kills through the walt disney concert hall as they performed "purple rain" yesterday. this is an annual choir event in l.a. but this tribute was added to the program last minute. the students only started rehearsing this song early yesterday morning. and tonight, right here on nbc bay area there will be a special episode of "saturday night live" highlighting prince's appearances on the show over the years.

one clip of his recent appearance back in 2014. "snl's" tribute begins at 11:30. now to decision 2016, the california republican convention is just one week away and the presidential candidates are making fierce moves to take the lead. as you may know in california, you can only vote if the republican primary if you're registered as a republican. the gop candidates are targeting independents. frontrunner donald trump launched a phone call campaign to get votes here in the golden state. >> this is donald trump and i need your help to make america great again. california has a closed presidential primary. in order for your vote to count, you must be registered to vote as a republican. visit donaldjtrump.com for information on changing your party affiliation so you can vote in the republican primary. >> some republicans and super pac supporters say trump's efforts to win california may not be enough and some do not

support him. >> he is not consistent with the values of republicans, the republican party platform, or in general the republican agenda and i think that in the long run, he's going to have a difficult time in california. >> trump is scheduled to give the keynote address at the republican convention kickoff banquet next friday at the hyatt regency at sfo. all three republican candidates seeking the party's nomination will be in attendance. next week a big week for bay area republicans. ted cruz and john kasich will be in burlingame. kasich is currently campaigning in pennsylvania and the "l.a. times" is reporting he will hold a town hall in san francisco next friday. cruz also is making his way across pennsylvania where he -- which he considers a key battleground state in the 2016 race. voters there and in four other states head to the polls this tuesday. in other news, new this morning, there may be a break in the case of a string of freeway

shootings in the east bay. this comes after months of gunfire that have caused accidents and deaths. the california highway patrol tells us multiple arrests are expected soon. since january, the chp has recorded 18 shootings on bay area highways. the majority of them in the east bay along interstate 80. the recent happened earlier this week on highway 4 near pittsburgh. >> after you've lived in this area for 50 years, this is nothing abnormal. >> nothing you can do to keep yourself safe. you hope you're -- it doesn't happen to you. >> in the meeting yesterday, investigators announced they have traced bullets from different shootings to the same weapon. they believe 99% of the shootings involved gangs from vallejo to oakland. scary sight for b.a.r.t. looked worse than it was. we've been telling you about the new b.a.r.t. trains. yesterday one of the trains derailed on a test track in the east bay. operators were testing the new

trains which travel between five and ten miles per hour on the testing tracks. no major damage is reported. one person was injured. one person was not injured i should say. the operator was the only person on board. b.a.r.t. hasn't said what caused that accident. a local minister behind bars this morning, 32-year-old fernando maldanado accused of sexually assaulting a child younger than 14 years old. police say it happened over a three-year period when he was a minister for more rello baptist church and he moved to grace baptist church in pleasant hill in 2014. police are now working to find out if there are any other victims. another claim of sexual misconduct at uc berkeley and against an internationally renowned coach. cal is investigating accusations a male rower sexually assaulted a female crew member at a party in 2013 and additionally the team's coach mike teti is being

accused of never reporting that assault. teti calls those allegations false. it's news that some students find appalling. >> a lot of the responsibility lies in the upper level administrative offices and such. i feel like this type of stuff should never happen in the first place. >> the university has hired an outside investigator to examine the complaint. it's been a troubling time for cal which is under the microscope for four other claims of sexual misconduct that have been made against the university faculty. a massive sinkhole continues to plague one of san francisco's nicest neighborhoods. it's 22 feet across and 10 feet deep. the sinkhole is on sacramento street between lion and baker street. that's between pacific heights and presidio heights. a sewer pipe broke thursday evening just swallowing that part of the street and that cause is still under investigation. >> we don't know the cause, but we do know that this particular pipe is actually quite older,

both of those patients became sick when they traveled outside of the u.s. the woman in san francisco is pregnant, but isn't showing any symptoms. she is, however, undergoing treatment because zika can cause birth defects. the patient in san mateo county we're told has fully recovered. an east bay high school trying to right a wrong after it had former 49er ray mcdonald give a motivational speech to at risk students and generated a lot of backlash. mcdonald is accused of raping a woman and faces an upcoming trial in santa clara county. that woman is being represented by well-known civil rights attorney gloria allred. allred offered to speaks to the students at hayward's high school saying she usually turns down tuneses to speak because she can't make time, but she thought this was an important one for her to do. >> i shared a little bit about myself, and how i came from a family that didn't have much

barry bonds was in the house, the home run king now the miami marlins hitting coach, showered with love despite sporting a different uniform. the scene in the third inning as he exited the dugout as you saw and it tipped his cap. we'll hear from bonds about 30 minutes from now. >> three on two. going to the net. the puck burns and they score! his second goal of the game. >> they have done it. the sharks beat the kings in l.a. to advance to round two of the playoffs. san jose won 6-3. the sharks win the series and advance to round two to face either nashville or anaheim beginning next week. a world record is on its way to the bay area. it combines solar, tech and aviation. and it's set to land tonight in mountainview. it's a solar powered airplane flying around the world.

the two pilots are documenting their journey live. see it here on their aircraft called solar impulse ii. "today in the bay's" ian cole tells us about the message the pilots are hoping to spread. >> reporter: they call it solar impulse ii, two men trying to become the first to fly a solar powered airplane around the world. >> what was seen by some people impossible is possible. andre and bertrand are the founders and pilots an alternate on different legs of the journey. piccard is flying on the two-day trip from hawaii to the bay area. s forberg waiting to take over. >> speed between 40 and 50 miles an hour. >> reporter: the wing span wider than a 747 and the plane weighs about as much as an suv. the pilots take 20 minute naps to rest and their mission control is in monaco. the entire trip, documented on their website. >> the first and only airplane in the world.

we can fly a week or month. >> the trip started a year ago in the middle east and stopped in hawaii last summer. technical problems grounded the aircraft until yesterday. and tonight, it will land at moffett field. the goal isn't just the historic flight, but to show how solar energy can be used to better transportation and the world. >> if you can use what we have, which we can on the ground, we can reduce the consumption by 50%. potentially enormous. >> two men chasing history fueled by excitement and the sun. ian cole, nbc bay area news. the plane will land around midnight tonight and leave for new york on tuesday. the pilots hope to complete their around the world journey by summer. let's check in with meteorologist rob mayeda with a look at our weekend forecast. this week has been all over the place in terms of the weather we've been seeing, rob. >> yeah. hot temperatures to pretty good rain showers that came through yesterday and snow at times in

the sierra right now. we're seeing some of the lingering moisture from yesterday still over san jose with dramatic flair. you see the sunny breaks there and the sun beams through the clouds east of san jose. 50 degrees. seeing mostly sunny skies, 52 in san francisco but afterwards north bay a chilly start, down to 45 degrees with patchy fog in parts of the north bay this morning. and if you're going to head out to the coast watch out for high surf. we've got a beach hazard statement up for rip currents and sneaker waves possible. you can see some of the wave heights off shore, 9, 10 feet at times. use caution with the sunshine perhaps luring you out to the coast. satellite radar view shows you the system that brought the rain is moving to the east. there is still a slight chance up here around the north bay, sonoma and napa county as we head toward the afternoon where we could see a stray shower popping up near the hilltops otherwise partly cloudy skies will carry us into tomorrow, at least the morning hours, and mostly clear skies for the bay area and the sierra, though, a little different story. we'll show you that coming up in

a moment. highs today upper 60s to near 70 for areas san jose south. mid 60s closer to san francisco. peninsula temperatures in the upper 60s. for the north bay highs in the 60s and low 70s. trivalley temperatures in the same range. petaluma, the butter and egg day festival around noon, we'll have the parade starting, at 66 degrees. temperatures climbing close to 70 as that event continues. head over to san francisco this evening we've got the giants and marlins once again, first pitch coming up at 6:05. temperatures around first pitch time close to 60 degrees. and then cooling into the upper 50s as the game goes on. but speaking of the sierra forecast, though, it's going to be a little different. late sunday into monday we'll see a system drop down that's going to make for breezy conditions around the bay area. but snow showers likely in the sierra by the end of the weekend into monday. check that out. we could see perhaps six to ten inches of snow, most of that coming down late sunday into monday. so cold air with that system as

it comes in. we could see snow levels dropping perhaps as low as 6,000 feet. if your travel plans include the sierra late sunday to monday you may be dealing with winter-like conditions early next week. for the bay area, next three days, the end of the weekend looks good. windy at times for your sunday, from the north bay into san jose. highs similar to what we saw today and then tuesday into wednesday, comes the next change in the weather. first that system will drop to the east of the sierra on monday and then for the middle part of the next week here comes our next best chance for seeing some rain right now as early projections as we move into tuesday and wednesday will bring perhaps a quarter inch of rain, so not quite done with the rain just yet as you can see here in the extended forecast, which takes us now into your wednesday. middle part of next week rain at times and then decreasing as we head towards the evening. so no real chances of rain this weekend for the bay area, but by the middle part of next week that roller coaster ride will continue from partly cloudy skies and a chance of seeing those rain showers. so we're expected to go through

good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm kira klapper. meteorologist rob mayeda joins us, special guest this morning. >> yes. >> microclimate forecast. >> in extra early seeing clearing skies, chilly temperatures in parts of the bay area this morning. right now san jose some pretty nice sun beams between the clouds there, east of downtown right now. 50 degrees, sunshine in san francisco, 52 and ocean beach looks nice, the sunny skies may tempt you to head to the coast but we have a beach hazard statement up today due to the large waves, 9 to 10 feets, so the sneaker waves and rip currents can be a problem. use caution between now and 8:00 tonight. temperatures today mostly in the 60s, close to 70 in the warmer spots inland, butter and egg days festival in petaluma should be nice, upper 60s, parade starting at noon and for the giants game coming up this evening on the cool side, a nice jacket should be fine, cool and breezy, temperatures close to 60 around first pitch time. by the end of the weekend, tracking this storm, an inside slider speaking of baseball,

that will drop in east of the sierra that could bring snow and more rain. we're not done with it yet. middle part of next week, the impact and how much rain and snow, which is a little surprising in the sierra for the next storm. we'll have a look at that coming up in a few minutes. >> wow. so surprising, thanks. speaking of, we have video from the sierra last night. not the most common sight in late april as rob was saying. snow on the side of i-80. yesterday's storm brought ice and white powder to the area and as always, that slippery slush meant long delays for drivers. take a look at how hard it was snowing earlier in the day. thousands of people were stuck in traffic at a chain control station at i-80 at kingvale. >> our chains are in the garage. we went all the way up to the checkpoint, turned around, went to cisco, bought the chains and we're back in line again. >> most skiers couldn't take advantage of this storm because resorts like donner ski ranch already are closed.

>> and after a healthy soaking from one storm after another, the change in landscape is dramatic here in california. take a look at this. this was lake orville last spring. you could see the exposed lakebed valleys and canyons and today, good news, it's approaching capacity with at least 100 feet of water, and rising higher as the snow pack continues to melt. in the southern end of the state, el nino was a bust. >> no time for complacency. that would be a big mistake. >> officials say to truly end this historic drought we need several years in a row of wet winters. new this morning, police are searching for a 14-year-old driver who led them on a high-speed chase that happened around 1:30 this morning in roneers park. officials say they saw a driver speeding through a stop sign and when they tried to pull him over he sped to more than 90 miles an hour to escape. the car eventually crashed at the intersection of southwest and commerce boulevard.

monday. defense lawyers are asking for more time. only this time, the man accused of killing the morgan hill team is opposing the delay. "today in the bay" has more on what happens next. >> reporter: defense attorneys asked the judge to grant a delay in the capital murder trial against antolin garcia-torres. torres objected and told the judge he's no longer waving his right to a speedy trial, that means the clock is ticking and the defense has 60 days from today to be ready for trial. >> it could be months before the first witness is called in this case. >> reporter: the trial against torres was set to begin monday but little was expected to happen, likely assigning the judge and courtroom. now the new judge will decide whether to grant a new tla or start the trial immediately. >> i think it's significant even if there is a short delay in the trial, that the case is getting ready for trial. the justice is starting to move forward for both sierra's family and for mr. garcia-torres.

>> reporter: convicted, torres could face the death penalty. prosecutors say he murdered teenager sierra lamar in 2012. the da says dna links torres to the murder. her body has not been found. damian tra he yo, nbc bay area news. we're told it's a new low point for the san jose police department, but there could soon be some relief. more than 2,000 people applied to the police academy, but only nine recruits graduated yesterday afternoon. it's one of the smallest classes the department has had. recruiting numbers dwindled after years of pension fights between the city and police. they reached a settlement last fall but it has yet to be approved. >> obviously want to see more recruits, but we recognize until we get a judge's signature on the settlement, it's going to be challenging for us. >> san jose's mayor says the courts could finalize the deal to improve police benefits within the next few weeks. stranded on this side of a

you're watching "today in the bay." >> welcome back at 7:41. the sun is shining outside over at&t park on this saturday morning. barry bonds returned as a hitting coach for the miami marlins last night. it was like he never left at&t park. a sold-out crowd cheered the all-time home run leader every chance they had. maybe bonds presence as the marlins hitting coach inspired the giants who entered this game having lost five straight. bonds was cheered when he took

out the lineup card before the game. the giants put up three runs in the first, brandon bell drives in here. in the fifth inning giants pitcher helped his cause singling in buster posy. did it again in the sixth hitting a two-run double to left field. san francisco snapped their five-game losing streak with an 8-1 win. great. back to bonds, before the game the home run king sat with local reporters for about ten minutes. he talked about his new relationship with the media and his new team and uniform. >> the colors are fairly similar. how long did it take for you to get used to the new uniform? >> day one. as long as it had orange in it i was okay. orange and black, i was good. miami has been great, the people have been great, fans have been great, medias has been great. i haven't had this much press, good press, in my entire lifetime. i'm liking it. i could have done this a long

we have much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up we're counting down to rio. we have a look at the bay area athlete who will soon be heading to the olympics. >> we're starting the morning with sunshine from san francisco to oakland. but a few extra clouds still hanging on to san jose. we're watching that and a good chance of snow returning to the sierra by the end of the weekend. what it means for the rest of the bay area forecast when we come right back.

very good saturday morning to you. back here showing you temperatures in the 40s and 50s outside. lot of sunshine north of oakland into san francisco and the trivalley, but san jose still a few patches of low clouds. 50 degrees right now. out towards the coast, west of san francisco out towards ocean beach, 52 degrees. looks pretty inviting with the sunshine but see the rough surf offshore. wave heights of 9 to 10 feet and a beach hazard statement up through about 8:00 tonight for the potential for sneaker waves and rough rip currents, especially around the tidal

changes of the day. so use caution if you're going to head out to the coast even if the sunshine and dangerous conditions there due to the rough surf at times this weekend. satellite radar view, rain producing clouds for the most part have moved on. there will be one exception to the rule today where that's concerned, and that will be parts of the north bay where you mitt see a stray shower trying to pop up mid afternoon around the hilltops north towards sonoma county, lake county and mend siena county to the north. partly cloudy skies and temperatures across the region mostly in the mid to upper 60s and few low 70s south of downtown san jose. highs today near 69 degrees in san jose. closer to 70 in loss guy toes and saratoga, and low 60s near san francisco where the onshore winds will keep things on the cool side. redwood city about 67 degrees and for the north bay, upper 60s and low 70s around napa and santa rosa and you see pleasonton and livermore highs upper 60s to low 70s. overall nice conditions outdoors

for the butter and egg days festival in petaluma. great time. at noon, temperatures climbing through the upper 60s are and later on tonight, towards the evening, patchy low clouds and that sea breeze keeping things cool out at the giants game, first pitch at 6:05, temperatures near 60 as the game starts and dropping to the upper 50s as the game goes on. so for the end of the weekend, we're going to see another storm system here but it's going to bypass the bay area for the most part. we think it's going to drop in east of the sierra which will take most of the moisture to the east along with it but which you'll notice the changes here on sunday into monday. the winds will begin to pick up out of the north so gusty conditions to wrap up the weekend. check out the sierra here sunday into monday we could see the snow come up, maybe 6 to 10 inches of snow possible for parts of the sierra. this is going to carry over into the monday morning forecast. so winter-like conditions will go from spring and temperatures in the 50s today, upper 40s on sunday, and watch out for the changing conditions in the high country to wrap up the weekend. for the bay area, breezy to start the new week into sunday

and monday, temperatures not changing a whole lot. tuesday we begin to see more clouds on the way. because that's the next change in our weather. and the better chance for seeing some rain for the bay area, a system that will track more west to east. so what you'll see during the day wednesday will be increasing clouds, similar day to what we saw yesterday, but the rain coming in, but probably lower rain totals than we just saw. again all of this coming in on wednesday. as you jump ahead in the seven-day forecast, at the bottom of the screen, this is your wednesday storm system. rain at times, decreasing by wednesday evening and next thursday we should see clearing skies once again. two systems we're watching, one a main impact for the sierra for the end of the weekend, and the other one arriving on wednesday with a chance of showers and very interesting as we look out to the ten day forecast for san jose, that next chance of rain on wednesday may be it for a while because next weekend's forecast should sew a warmup in the mid to upper 70s as we wrap into april and move into may. the time is really flying. kira, back to you. >> time is flying, indeed, rob.

lily zeng's second trip to the olympics and she's coming clean on how she discovered the sport. here's "today in the bay's" joe ris so theto jr. >> reporter: it's probably not typical for olympic dreams to get their start in a laundromat, but a faculty laundry room on the stanford campus equipped with table tennis is where lily zeng first tumbled into the sport. >> my dad was a professor there. every time we went to do laundry there was a table there and i would play with my parents for fun. >> reporter: somewhere between the spin cycle and the dryer, a future olympian was born. >> never began as a serious competitive thing. >> reporter: soon things did get serious. zang traded from a laundry room to a proper table tennis club. >> it was just so fast and so physical. >> reporter: and then at age 10 zang made the national table tennis team. >> that moment i was like, you know, maybe i can really do this as a serious sport and, you know, go to the olympics some

day. >> reporter: that some day was 2012 when zang represented the u.s. in the london olympics. >> we were walking, the open arena was mind blowing. >> reporter: though she didn't take home a medal she went home with more fire for the sport. >> just being able to go out there and represent my country, it was such an incredible and humbling experience. >> reporter: zang's path back to the olympic games winds through the india table community ken nis center in mill pe tas, long hours every day spent punishing a white ball. >> you have to. lily, likely, she has this gift. >> a lot of people don't really know the sport of table tennis. they think it's ping-pong. >> reporter: along with raising the visibility of table tennis in the u.s., zang is also inspiring younger players. >> how old will you be? >> they are trying to imitate lily. lily is a role model. >> reporter: for now zang is
