blocking off several streets in san francisco as police look for evidence in early morning homicide. a voracious fire in the attic of a sports institution destroys the restaurant here. what about all the memorabilia on the walls. he slipped, he fell, he got hurt again. a fresh injury for mvp steph curry has warriors' fans holding their collective breaths. reaction from the team right now on "today in the bay." >> a very good monday morning to you. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. we need sunlight to perk up fans. the reality is it's chilly. >> good morning. that sunshine does not come along with warmth. chilly temperatures starting out

the day. look how cool it is in the north bay as it drops down to 43. 47 in san francisco, the peninsula and south bay. warming up nicely into the upper 60s. mostly sunny skies. it will still be a windy day with winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour. by the middle of the week, we'll have rain moving in. i'll detail that. let's head over to mike tracking a tough drive for the san jose area. two spots. we typically have them from north 101. earlier crash from oakland road looks cleared. the build is on. north 87 slows for about a half hour. a road crew is supposed to clear. still very chloe. alphabet expressway a better drive. 87 northbound, the worst for the

south bay. a live look at the bay bridge. metering lights are on but most of our bay bridges, watch for gusts of wind. >> new this morning, just hours ago flames ripping through a very popular south bay restaurant and grill. this happening at double d sports grill in the heart of downtown los gatos. >> kris sanchez live in los gatos this morning. so many of us know that restaurant well. how bad is the damage? >> we all had eggs and maybe a bloody mary here on game day. this is what happened yesterday as warriors were on. it was a huge for the great race. the inside is damaged by smoke and water. all of that memorabilia that's on the walls, probably worth thousands of dollars, that was

saved. owners were here on the scene. before the flames overtook the attic, owners and firefighters were able to get a lot of that memorabilia out. that is the one bright spot this morning. it went to three alarms calling for mutual aid. it burned fast and furious. there was a lot of room in the attic for that fire to grow. the firefighters here can't say yet where the fire started. it's safe to say you have to watch your favorite bay area teams elsewhere. >> the lone fire engine here moved into the alley. the roadway is once again opened. no major disruption to traffic because of the fire engine, but a lot of folks have been coming around tapping on the brakes to see what happens here. 6:03.

we are following breaking news in san francisco. police are investigating an apparent homicide that happened three hours ago at tenderloin. a short time ago we spoke to police. they won't say much about how the person died. they are not indicating if it was male or female. police do say they have no one in custody. in san jose, lots of questions this morning after a man and woman are found dead inside of a home. police are investigating a double homicide. the victims' bodies were discovered yesterday in the evergreen neighborhood. family members tell us the victims her a married couple. police are not releasing their names or explaining how the victims died. damian is gathering more information. >> 6:04. the long-awaited sierra lamar murder trial is expected to be delayed again. torres is accused of murdering the teenager back in 2012.

his trial was scheduled to start today but defense lawyers are asking for more time. on friday torres told the judge he wanted to stand trial within 60 days. he is exercising his constitutional right for a speedy trial. many sierra lamar's body has never been found but dna evidence linked torres to the murder. a woman killed by a hit-and-run driver. police are asking for the public's help to find that driver. that crash happened saturday night at 11:00 right near fremont boulevard and thornton avenue. witnesses tell investigators that woman was walking in the street on fremont boulevard when struck. police arrived to find people performing cpr on the victim. she was pronounced dead at the hospital. police looking for a light colored two-door jeep wrangler with a black top. there is damage to the front fender of the car.

>>. >> video from a firefighter el met cam shows what they were up against. it started in the attic. the building was built back in the 1850s. there are several businesses in that complex. many of them with fireç and war damage. no one was hurt and the cause of that fire is under investigation. it looked like a great win, a commanding win for the warriors but it was clouded by yet another injury. this one looked a whole lot worse than the ankle sprain that kept him out against the rockets. in the second quarter yesterday, curry slipping on a wet spot on the court. his knee lands awkwardly there. he sprained it.

he was very emotional on the sidelines. first he is walking with a noticeable limp. then he shared a prayer with friends and family. they are all huddled around there. curry is going to undergo an mri later today. head coach steve kerr feels bad for steph. >> he was very upset. i feel awful for him. hopefully, he is going to be okay before too long. we don't know. i feel bad for him. he had been healthy all year long. all of a sudden the playoffs start. a couple of fluke things. feel bad for steph. we've got to move on. >> while his teammates did pick him up, doves exploded in the third quarter yesterday without their mvp.

of a crowd of about 300 cheering people last night. the solar impulse 2 made a quiet and graceful landing around 11:30 last night. 2 1/2 days after it left hawaii. it's the first fixed wing solar plane to fly over the pacific ocean. the pilot emerged all smiles and full of energy despite spending 62 hours in the plane's tiny cockpit. he says this is the beginning of a much-needed shift to clean technologies. >> renewable energy. you can live better with no fossil fuel, with less pollution, less waste of natural resources and the clean technologies that allow this is allowing us to produce clean energy. >> he almost didn't sleep for three full days. the solar impulse remains inside of a giant hangar. tuesday the plane will head off

pressure approaches by wednesday bringing us showers, starting out in time for the morning commute. we'll see shades of yellow. that shows where there could be heavier rain. it starts out in the north bay. then we'll have a chance of heavy rain by early afternoon. by the evening, it all gets out of here and winds start kicking up behind that system. about 1/4 inch of rain in san francisco, half moon bay. go down to san jose, there may be more, closer to 1/2 inch, up to 3/4 in santa rosa. good soaking in the middle of the week. our temperatures start to rebound. pofrg la loosh be al are . >> 70s in the tri-valley. ahead to the weekend, seems like we'll have a summer feel for the weekend with our temperatures warming up quickly into the 70s, even low 80s. 83 in the north bay on sunday.

a big debate takes place tonight at stockton's university of pacific - airing here on nbc bay area. the 5 candidates now vying to replace u-s senator barbara debate taking place tonight at stockton university. this has nothing to do with the presidential races. the five candidates vying to replace u.s. senator barbara boxer are going to take the stage for what might be the only time. students over the weekend helped prepare for tonight's debate. all five candidates are going to take the stage tonight. it maybe the only time they are in the same room at the same time before the june 7th primary. >> having the candidates on campus is an exceptional opportunity for students. they can hear what a younger generation wants out of their senator.

the three republicans. that debate starts at 6:00 p.m. here on nbc bay area. back to the presidential race for the white house. ted cruz and john kasich hoping two is better than one. in a major move, republicans are announcing they are teaming up in the hopes of keeping front-runner donald trump from winning the party's nomination. >> good morning. interesting. we've got ted cruz and john kasich agreeing. they sent these announcements out late yesterday evening agreeing they are going to back off each other in certain states divvying up the primaries left to defeat donald trump. a horrible act of desperation, donald trump calls it overnight. his two rivals coordinating to prevent trump from reaching the

we saw slowing right there. paving crew there. haven't heard of disruption. right now i can tell you the monterey road routes are the better routes for now as the surface starts to get crowded and the freeways build. slower drive west across the san mateo bridge. some degree around the high rise. 8800 and 101 hadn't seen a problem yet. a smooth drive out there northbound. all the way to the bay bridge where you have metering lights on. back to you. >> we are following breaking news into our newsroom. an active scene happening at the california grand casino. police have that casino surrounded light now. very active police presence. we are still gathering details

about the situation. bob redell headed to the scene right now. our chopper also headed there. we'll give you an update soon as we have more information to report. >> a popular south bay restaurant up in flames. firefighters spending early morning hours battling this fire at double d's sports grill in los gatos. the fire started before midnight. crews needed to call for extra backup. a bit of good news. much of the sports memorabilia on the walls of the restaurant was set to be saved. kris sanchez has been at the scene all morning long. she will join us with a live report at 6:56. a developing story in san jose where police are trying to put together a possible motive in a double homicide. a man and woman found dead inside of a home on lucas court in the normally quiet evergreen neighborhood.

damian with what police are telling us about the progress of this investigation. >> the lights were still on upstairs at police headquarters when we arrived after 4:00 this morning. they stay up 24 to 48 hours after a homicide to catch the suspects or put a good case together for prosecutors. this morning they have yet to identify a suspect in this case. a family member called police 2:00 yesterday after finding a man and woman dead inside their home. the family tells nbc bay area they are husband and wife. it happens on lucas court in the evergreen community. police do not have a motive for the shootings. the double homicide shocked this community. lucas court is a quiet cul de sac nestled in the evergreen foot hills. >> hard to believe we have two

small children in our home. to know something like that is so close to home. >> police hope to interview more witnesses and family members about the shooting. the coroner has yet to identify the victims in this case. the chief told me in the past he will continue the tradition of his predecessor. that means visiting family members of homicide victims to offer his full support. yesterday's double homicide marks five in roughly a week in san jose. according to the mercury news, statistics show about a 6% spike in violent crimes this year. police caution about making dramatic conclusions based on this recent spike in violence. >> grief counselors will be at a recent high school after a student died over the weekend.

the freshman died. this is a photo of him from his twitter account. the fire department says it responded to reports of an unresponsive male at a home around 4:00 sunday morning in martinez. it's still unclear how he died. there has been an outpouring of support from his family on social media. pictures showed he played football. a couple of san francisco police officers recovering this morning after a crash. they suffered minor injuries when an suv hit their patrol car. that crash happened at evans avenue and phelps street in the bayview yesterday. officers were taken to the hospital and the driver of the suv stayed on scene and cooperated with police. no word if that driver will face any charges. >> three people injured after a collision sent a car crashing into a san francisco restaurant. this happened about 2:00 yesterday afternoon at the sutter pub and restaurant on the corner of sutter and taylor street in downtown san

francisco. at least two cars were involved in that crash. one person reportedly suffered serious injuries, two others have minor injuries. no word on the cause of the crash. a hunger strike in san francisco still going strong. a handful of people on the mission district police station calling for mayor ed lee to step down or fire the police chief. they are upset over recent police shootings. the group have been consumer only water, ginger tea and vitamins. it will be weeks before we find out how prince died. the 7:00-year-old music legend remains have been cremated in a private ceremony. fans still in mourning. charities prince worked with closely are feeling his loss. yes we code was an initiative the star helped to teach coding to underprivileged kids. >> he was so incredibly kind and generous and listening and

nobody was injured. bob redell is headed to the scene to get us more information. it is 6:44. teens who are exposed to e-cigarette ads are more likely to use those devices according to a new government study. researchers found about 4% of middle schoolers and 13% high school students use e-cigarettes which is a huge increase from just three years ago. during that same time period, e-cigarette advertisement spending rose from $6 million to $115 million. while talking about big numbers, a hefty price for overdue library books. san jose patrons facing stiff fines. seven people racked up fines totalling more than $5,000. 130 people face fines of at least $1,000.

some say the problem is that san jose allows people to check out 100 items at once. double what is allowed in san francisco and oakland. there are more than $6 million in unpaid fines for lost or overdue library books. could the raiders soon move to las vegas? mark davis is expected to be in sin city this week to talk about that pocket. las vegas sands corporation wants to build a $1.3 billion stadium in the city. mark davis is scheduled to attend that meeting. davis is considering having the team play in las vegas if the stadium actually gets built. a nearly $1 billion takeover, a hostile takeover in the works in the newspaper world this morning. >> this could affect several californian newspapers. >> the tribune company owns "the l.a. times" and other newspapers around the country.

gannett is best known for "usa today" but also owns papers like the "detroit free press." it's 63% more than wall street is worth and that is brand-new this morning. we'll continue to watch it. >> a new study says if department stores are going to survive, they need to have fewer stores. green street advisors says macy's needs to close 70 more stores. jcpenney. advisors said it feeds to close 320 stores. the store chains respond they are still profitable even if not making as much money per store. that report says obviously online buying is one of the causes of department store problems but not the only one. brands like apple and nike and levi's created their own stores. apple, facebook and twitter reveal earnings and the fed meet

it starts in by wednesday morning with bright yellow shades here showing there could be heavy rain. that moves through fairly quickly, but still some afternoon showers lingering into the day before all this clears out wednesday evening. during the meantime, we could have up to 1/2 inch of rain for parts of the bay area. walnut creek, fremont, santa rosa, 3/4 inch. the weather dried out once again and then starts to warm up. it starts out thursday with sunshine. 73 in the south bay. 63 in san francisco. some low to mid 70s for the rest of the bay area. heading into the weekend. it's only monday. you may be making some plans. you can make beach plans. we are talking mid 80s for south bay and tri-valley and mid 70s for san francisco. mike is keeping an eye on san francisco. >> full disclosure.
