came into our newsroom. these are again two vehicles involved along with this crane. the two right lanes are closed. we don't know when the lanes will reopen. chp is working on the investigation. the coroner was there quite some time, as well. no slowing except at the scene when the commute starts to build. much more pleasant news on the weather front. >> looking very nice starting out this morning. cool temperatures and mostly partly cloudy skies. we do have mostly cloudy skies near the coast. 49 in the north bay at san francisco. looking at highs today up to 76. it will be cooler in spots like san francisco where we will only top out at 62. 73 in the south bay. wide ranging temperatures thanks to clouds and gusty winds. i'll show you a warm-up for the weekend in a few minutes. >> thank you. we are following breaking news

in the south bay this morning. officers opening fire on a suspect in milpitas. police blocked off the area right near interstate 680 as this investigation continues. >> active scene where stephanie chuang with more on how this all unfolded. >> good morning. i understand from a milpitas police lieutenant how this happened. around 1:00 this morning, the officer made a traffic stop across the street at the executive inn where a car is still parked there. a man takes off running across the boulevard here. an officer opened fire, shoots the man who ends up on the northbound 680 on ramp here off. he was arrested there. the man was taken away in an ambulance to a local hospital where he is getting treatment under the supervision of officers. police do not know his condition but say he likely did not suffer

life-threatening injuries. more an dozen police officers as well as chp officers have been on scene. the investigation could take a couple more hours. >> it's important to get all the facts. we are going to collect all the evidence and review all possible witnesses in the area. it's a slow process to make sure we do a good job. >> a thorough investigation. back here live you can see some of the lights on a couple of the patrol cars here. northbound 680 still closed until at least 6:00 this morning. this is westbound. this is the first officer-involved shooting here in milpitas this year. that officer was not hurt. stephanie chuang "today in the bay." >> 5:02. san francisco police chief is expected to announce new training for officers today. all in an effort to combat bias

in that department. comes a day after mayor ed lee sends this letter to the department saying he will not tolerate acts of bigotry or intolerance. earlier they found 11 officers engaged in offensive behavior and have been fired for it. pretty bold protesting outside donald trump's rally last night in orange county. a few people taking out their political frustrations on that police cruiser. there were several hundred protesters. about 20 of whom were arrested. no one was seriously hurt. the hope is we don't see a repeat here. protests are expected in the bay area as well, as the california republican convention kicks off in bowling game. >> security for the three-day

event will be tight. hundreds, possibly thousands of demonstrators are expected to protest. >> we talked with everybody. we are confident we have a good system in place and that everybody is going to be ordinarily. if not, we do have a system to handle that. >> all three republican presidential candidates will attend the convention. trump is expected to kick off the convention with a speech at lunch. john kasich will speak tonight and ted cruz will attend tomorrow. hillary clinton's oakland headquarters opened to plenty of cheering. more than 100 people showed up for this opening rally yesterday. it's filled with signs and people pledging their support. that office is going to serve as a phone bank for volunteers. local politicians like oakland's mayor were on hand to officially introduce clinton staff in california. >> stay with nbc bay area for all your decision 2016 coverage. head to nbcbayarea.com where we

have a section on our website dedicated just to elections. the couple will have their funeral today. their oldest son was arrested wednesday in tracy and yesterday his 17-year-old brother was arrested in san jose. we are hoping everybody's prayers are with us. we are praying for the closer family who are facing more than you and i are facing. >> sources tell us the parents did not approve of their older son's sexual orientation. family members and investigators are not commenting about the suspect's lifestyle. a man was shot and killed at a gas station in richmond.

this happened yesterday about 5:00. the victim, 26-year-old reginald atkinson is from richmond. that shooting happened at the vallero gas station. police to this point have not released a motive or description of the shooter. police are hunting this man who is considered a person of interest for burglary and sexual assault in chinatown. the suspect broke into the victim's apartment. a high school coach has been fired in the south bay. she is accused of molesting a 15-year-old boy. the 20-year-old was arrested op the san jose high school campus this week. she is facing annoying and molestation charges. investigators are not saying how long her alleged relationship with the student lasted, but the charges were enough for the school district to fire their coach. >> we are very aggressive.

the safety and security of our students is paramount when we suspect someone is not doing ouç standards, we will leave that relationship. >> wynn was only coaching since february. she did pass a full background check. they are prestigious but dealing with crime. stand ford and uc berkeley campuses. those two universities had the most on campus crime per capita in the state. ucla and santa cruz followed. the most common crime was burglary. 18 were sexually related and the third stolen cars. it's been a wacky week from start to finish, we had cold weather, rainy weather, now we have tropical weather. break out the hawaiian shirts. >> it won't be that humid but will be much warmer. feeling more like summer time in the bay area rather than spring. we do start out with low clouds

and fog this morning as we get a look at the shades of gray there. we can see where the clouds rolled back from the coast this evening. into the day tomorrow, starting out all clear. we'll be getting ready for that sunshine and much warmer air rolling. in look at the microclimate today. feeling nice with highs in low 70s in the south bay. palo alto 69. san francisco, a few clouds. north bay up to 76. we'll look to that warm-up this weekend. mike, are you still looking at those issues on the roadways? >> we are. two incidents, but not a lot of slowing. overall speed sensors show green down here in milpitas. it does involve the closure of the on ramp getting over toward 237. light traffic there. not a big deal.

slowing over to southbound 680. at the scene of the deadly crash blocking two lanes. this will build as more traffic comes down off the interchange. the bay bridge toll plaza. this is a friday. overall we have light flowing traffic. and we expect later more gentle build at the toll plaza itself. no problems for east bay or north bay. back to you. up next, is b.a.r.t. policing or big brothering? the question surrounding b.a.r.t.'s new plan to install license plate readers as that plan will move forward.

==laura//ots== privacy advocates are questioning the new plan by police to install license plate readers at all bart stations. ==vo== the bart board has agreed to first create a surveillance policy. privacy advocates are questioning a plan to put in a license reader at all b.a.r.t. stations. they have concerns what police will do with the data it collects. police say it will better collect commuters in cars they park at b.a.r.t. >> the intention on our part is to have a tool that helps us to reduce those types of crimes in our parking lot. >> b.a.r.t. police installed license plate readers at one station. the cameras have not been turned on yet. >> right now an investigative unit exclusive. the average person in the bay

jeff bezos not poor to begin with is moving up in the world. he is now the fourth riches person across the globe. >> the amazon founder made $8 billion overnight? >> overnight, laughing his way to the bank. i don't know if you ever heard him laugh. it is one of the loudest things you heard. he is a happy man this morning. amazon stock jumps overnight on the news. the company made its biggest profit ever that translates into instant billions for bezos. "the new york times" calculates this morning it's $8 billion overnight. amazon and facebook have done well lately. both in business and on the stock market. the rest of the stock market pretty rough. let's check in with landon dowdy. >> wall street will try to end the week on a positive note after the dow suffered its worse day more than two months on

thursday. the markets have a disappointing economic data and earnings. apple falling for a second straight day. look for reports on personal income and spending and consumer sentiment. earnings from chevron and exxon mobil. >> have a good weekend. pay pal's instant payment system may be in some trouble with the federal government. we are trying to figure out what. the federal trade commission was investigating it for "deceptive practices." it allows you to instantly send a friend money. they pay each other for rent and beer. lower fuel costs helped it post a $17 million profit over the last three months. virgin still acts as an independent company. it's been purchased by alaska airlines. i made no secret how much i like to fly virgin. this week we sit down with a

million mile travel expert saying what airline should we fly now? >> if you love the cool hip factor of virgin america, you can fly it for the next two years. i would probably switch to jetblue. they were second runner-up when it came to airline beauty queens. they have nice planes. they have innovative service. they've got mint in their first class sections. it's outstanding. it's a wide flat seat. a lot of people are very happy with that now. >> chris mcginnis says alaska airline is an okay airline. if you're looking for the same experience, especially flying to new york, jetblue. >> i wonder how many people look for an experience when they are flying or just a good deal. >> they look for a good deal when booking it, then about an hour into the flight they are saying, should have gone for that. >> i need more leg room.

>> you make an interesting point. alaska airlines may not necessarily get rid of the virgin brand. we are waiting to see how that plays out. >> i think they will. they fly two different types of airplanes. if they get rid of the airplane, they will get rid of the brand. where are we going, right? we'll live to fly another day. the solar plane was scheduled to take off tay but because of the weather it will stick around for a few more days. there is windy weather in phoenix, its next destination. the solar plane will rest and recharge inside an inflatable hangar. the crew members get to check out the bay area. >> i have some days off because we are staying here. so i can discover the san francisco area, which is great. >> we think you are going to love it. the plane will stay grounded until it leaves monday. the solar impulse 2 is on an historic tour of the world that

toward the tri-valley for tomorrow. up to 80, mid 80s for those inland area. 70s along the coast. 70s do stay in san francisco this weekend. even upper 70s, but we'll have more widespread 80s on sunday. a lot going on this weekend. let's start it out tonight at the sap center. 68 by the time the playoffs get under way once again. looking good there. a la carte and art spring fair in mountain view, it will be beautiful for that. have water and sun block as temperatures reach the low 80s on sunday. how weird street faire in san francisco. once you get out in that full sunshine, it will feel warm. later this evening at 67. looking at a few more clouds in the mix.

we also see temperatures that will be going down just a few more degrees into the start of next week. despite a few incidents on the roadways, looks like a smooth flow. the first one in milpitas. this is where steph chuang covers the investigation of an officer-involved shooting. steph will bring you the latest on the situation. the situation here coming down into the tri-valley southbound 680. an overnight crash before midnight. there are the two vehicles that got into a crash along with this crane blocking your two right lanes. a deadly crash and the investigation continues now. we have no update on when they hope to open the lanes. we've seen this slowing over the last few minutes and will likely build over the next half hour. we'll track that.

fans. a live look at the coliseum this morning-- the team's current home. but that could soon change if team owner mark davis gets his way. he wants the raer a new threat for raiders' fans. if team owner mark davis gets his way, he wants the raiders to move to sin city. he met with las vegas officials in nevada. he said he would be willing to pay $500 million personally if las vegas were to cover the rest of the cost for a brand-new dome stadium near the strip. oakland's mayor is saying hold on a second. >> the raiders are a national brand. it is not surprising other cities are courting them and trying to get them interested. >> it could take months or a year before we know if they are

we didn't know if we were going to start here in san jose or in anaheim if the ducks had won. there are a lot of tickets that need to be moved. our tickets are selling well. we should have a full house tonight. >> sharks nearly swept the l.a. kings. now they take on the predators, fans are happy the series is starting at home, but they are feeling nervous. >> it's going to be a great series. we went 1-2 against them in the regular season. last time we played them, we didn't win. it's going to be a great series and going to be physical and defensive. both teams are playing great hockey again. it's going to be fun. >> sharks are known for playing great road hockey and sometimes leaving the fans crying at home. >> i think that changed a lot.

this weekend, right? >> yes. it is 49 and a few clouds along the coast. those clouds will clear out today with gusty winds kicking up this evening. we'll have a wide range of temperatures to 76 in the north bay. mike are you tracking those incidents out there? >> yes. they are continuing to change. overall the bay looks good. steph chuang will tell you about the issues on 680. we have closures since before midnight. two lanes are blocked by a deadly crash. i'll show you how severe this

will be. breaking news we've been following. milpitas police officers opened fire on a suspect sending that person to the hospital. right now there is heavy police presence near interstate 680. >> stephanie chuang joining us live with what we know. this all started with a traffic stop. >> it did. the update now for people is your morning commute may be impacted because this is a popular connector between 880 and 680 and now this entire stretch is closed as traffic investigators continue their work here. at first it was just this northbound 680 on ramp that was closed. police say an officer pulled over a driver we just learned is a 27-year-old man with three no bill warrants out. they saw him at the executive inn across the street. he takes off and running when the officer opened fire, hitting the man who ends up on the 680

on ramp. the investigation is focused there. that's why it's still closed. the man was taken away in an ambulance and is expected to survive. more than a dozen police officers have been on scene all morning long. this investigation could take a couple more hours still. >> any time somebody shoots somebody, it's important to get all the facts. we are going to try to collect all the evidence we can, interview all possible witnesses in the area. it's just a slow process to make sure we do a good job. >> back here live, you can see the traffic investigators specialize in the traffic investigations to take measurements and see what happened here. the northbound ramps are shut down. there is no connection for people here. there is no specific time for when it will reopen.

enforcement here are seeing on social media, they are expecting hundreds, if not thousands of protesters outside the hyatt regency here in burlingame where donald trump will be speaking at noon at the california gop convention. every law enforcement agency will have officers and deputies deployed here in an attempt to keep the peace. >> one of our focuses is to make sure that these protests and demonstrations do so unimpeded. individuals' rights of free speech. >> traffic could be impacted.

be mindful driving through this area. we are expecting a large crowd. inside the stage is set for trump's noontime speech to many people who are considered gop insiders, the kind of people trump railed against as he tried to establish himself as an anti-establishment political outsider. how he performs here today, and how he is received could give us an indication how well he might do in the june 7 california primary. that's the last primary that could give him enough delegates to secure the republican nomination. his opponent john kasich will speak tonight and ted cruz with his running mate carly fiorina tomorrow. >> bob, thank you very much. it's not just picking presidential candidates that's on the minds of california voters. this fall they could decide whether to tighten the state's gun control laws. supporters have collected more than enough signatures for a ballot measure in november.

that ballot measure would beef up background checks on guns and ammunition sales. lieutenant governor gavin newsom is intending to join advocates today when they turn in signatures. police looking for three armed men wanted in a robbery and stabbing. if you recognize any of the suspects, san jose police ask that you give them a call. arme earmed, masked and dan. men are under arrest. >> berkeley police say since the beginning of march the three armed robbers struck business necessary six bay area cities. they also struck the bar in san francisco two times. police working with the fbi staked out that bar.

hospital in syria. the u-s state department says there are indications that the syrian regime was an update on the air strike that struck a hospital in syria that was there to help people gain medical access in the middle of a war zone. the u.s. state department say there are indications the syrian regime was behind that attack. the white house is condemning the attacks in aleppo yesterday. at least 27 people died. that included children and a pediatrician, the only one in the city. north korean supreme court sentenced a man to hard labor today. he was born in korea but later gained u.s. citizenship. he was found guilty of stealing state secrets. people with a criminal past or bad credit could get help

from presidenthobama. the administration is proposing a law that would ban federal agencies from asking questions from job applicants about their criminal or credit history until a job offer is made. the president says too many people are rejected from the get-go before they have a fair chance to pete for that job. >> 5:44. faster tests for the zika virus getting approval from the fda. the zika test is made by new jersey-based quest diagnostic. the cdc recommends testing for pregnant women who may have traveled to affected areas and are showing symptoms. another confirmed zika virus case here in the bay area. sonoma valley confirmed its first case after someone got sick after a trip to central america. there are now 12 cases in seven bay area counties. we mentioned yesterday the

dea was brought in to investigate prince's death. now investigators are looking into whether prince died from a prescription drug overdose. they say opiods were found in his paisley park home outside indianapolis and whether a doctor was prescribing those narcotics to prince before his death. autopsy results are pending. there won't be a john wayne day in california after some heated debate, state law makers rejected a resolution to honor the late actor. a gop law maker want odd to declare may 26th john wayne day marking the legendary actor's birth. opponents say his decades-old racially charged comments disqualify him from the honor. to tip or not to tip continuing to be a debate. >> as part of a settlement, uber hinted it would allow drivers to solicit tips. >> good morning.

the head of operations for uber new york says don't tip. specifically, he says it is not expected and is not required. riders tell us the thing they like about uber is it's hassle-free and that's the way we intend to keep it. high-tech firms often release reports showing their gender balance. apple says it hired 11,000 women this past year. intel says 43% of its new hires are women. etsy is going one step further and consider gender on a sliding scale. people are as male and female as they think they are. gender is a spectrum. it says 53% of its employees identify as female. amazon jumped into the food delivery business in san francisco. works pretty much the same way the other food deliveries do. i asked amazon's biggest competitor what that means for his business. he claims there are so many

restaurants out there, so many hungry people, there is room for everybody. >> annie's barbecue after working two months with door dash decided to give everyone in their store a raise. those stories along the tens of thousands of other stories that door dash that allowed us to serve the communities we have impacted. >> 85% of restaurants don't deliver yet. >> he is anticipating not losing business when amazon comes in and offers the same service for free? >> he knows amazon won't last forever for free. door dash just got $175 million in funding. they have time while amazon messes around in the market. >> amazon is only doing it in san francisco and it is free, but only temporary. door dash has a name behind

it, too. talk about how much time to wait. someone may have had a little too much time on their hands designing one new environmentally friendly way to deliver pizza. >> who needs car board when you can use a pizza box pie? vinny's in brooklyn is introducing a pizza box made out of pizza. this shows the crust. the designer admits things got slow wednesday and he started experimenting. it can be yours for about $40. it's delivered in a bag that is hopefully biodegradable. my concern is wheres that that crust been on the bottom? >> a lot of dirt and stuff on it. >> i'll have the center pie. >> has to be preserved carefully. >> never too early for pizza? what do you think? >> that's disgusting. put your hands underneath it? i don't know.

>> it's a whole hunk of pizza. it's a good thing, if you're hungry. >> for you, sam. let's take a look outside. we will have low clouds this morning. look at the low clouds and fog forecast. it starts to roll away from those inland areas, but along the coast part of the day. later tonight, all clear skies. those winds start to pick up, we will have changes in our forecast. let's look at the wind forecast. it starts out nice and calm coming in from the northwest into the rest of the day. it starts to get gusty by this evening. winds 20 to 25 miles per hour. higher along the coast. that's when wind advisories will kick in starting 11:00 tonight. with the high wind, we will also have high waves for tomorrow and sunday. of course, that's when temperatures will be heating up. so many people heading to the beach.

be mindful we could have rip currents and swells from 9-12 feet. major warming into the weekend. look at south bay numbers. the average high is 72. we'll be there today. then it jumps up to 82 tomorrow. 85 sunday. that will be the peak of the warmth as we get a summer-like spike in the temperatures. a lot going on this weekend. some of those pregame festivities will be warm. it starts to feel more comfortable in time for the game to start. in mountain view, we've got a spring art fair going on. temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s. tomorrow for the a's game will be 67 at first pitch. fifth inning. will be 64. let's head over to mike for a look at that morning commute. >> it's friday. we have a lighter commute but two very serious scenes.
