i love the '90s concert. >> we'll throw it back big-time. first to our top stories. talking about violent protests outside a donald trump rally in california where nearly 20 people were arrested. this as trump's opponent, ted cruz, responds to those harsh words from former speaker of the house john boehner. we begin our coverage this morning with nbc national correspondent peter alexander. good morning. >> reporter: this was donald trump's first campaign rally in california, and a huge crowd of anti-trump demonstrators were there to greet him. it became an ugly night. producing the worst violence since the fights inside the canceled rally in chicago in march. this breaking out outside between trump opponents and his supporters. late thursday hundreds of anti-trump protesters in california spilling out into the streets. blocking traffic and attacking police cars. local affiliate knbc capturing this trump supporter bandaged

and talking to medical personnel after reporters witnessed a confrontation. police arriving in riot gear. nearly 20 arrested. inside donald trump cruising into the golden state with nearly 172 delegates, the granddaddy of them all and last stop on the road to the republican nomination. >> no state in america has suffered worse from open borders than the state of california. it's impact on jobs, wages, security, schools, hospitals, has been devastating. i love california! june 7th! >> for ted cruz, counting on a comeback, the devil is in the details. with former speaker of the house john boehner as a private event giving cruz hell. >> lucifer in the flesh. i have never worked with a more miserable son of a [ bleep ]. over my dead body he would be president. >> he allowed his inner trump to come out. when john boehner calls me lucifer, he is not directing that at me. he is directing that at you.

to trump's campaign office. his home is also in the building. the envelope was opened by a staff member. overnight police determined the powder was not a threat. not the first time, though. just last month authorities investigating a letter with white powder sent to the office of trump's son. later determined it too was not hazardous. >> peter, thanks. bringing in chuck "todatodd. good morning. no secret that there is not a lot of love lost between john boehner and ted cruz. in a certain way, do you think this helps ted cruz? he makes the argument that it's the establishment that doesn't like him. >> this could have helped ted cruz six months ago. it could have helped ted cruz if there was no such thing as donald trump. this hurts ted cruz now. it's emblematic of why the stop trump movement couldn't get people to rally around ted cruz. you know, there is 100%, nearly 100% conviction among republicans that donald trump will not be a good republican

nominee, but there is not a consensus that somehow ted cruz would be a better alternative. what you hear john boehner say is essentially what you hear behind the scenes here in washington with a lot of republicans. as much as they fear trump, they think cruz, the alternative in cruz is worse. this is why cruz is stuck where he's at right now. >> what you're saying, chuck, is the prospects for a republican -- a united republican party in this general election season are extremely dim. >> it's very dim. if the choices are trump and cruz, it's not going to be a party that's going to be able to unite with itself. and that's why, when paul ryan took himself out -- and i am convinced now the stop trump movement totally lost all of its steam when paul ryan said there is no way i -- don't expect me to be your savior at the convention. don't expect me to be somehow encouraging people to put me on the ballot. that's what we're staring at here and that's what the

republican party is staring at. one more point, matt. john boehner is not speaker of the house because of ted cruz, don't forget that. john boehner certainly hasn't forgotten that. >> a huge part of it. let's talk about indiana, it's supposed to be the alamo for the stop trump movement. does it still hold that potential? >> it really does. trump can lose indiana and still get to the magic number. it's a little harder. good news for trump. if he wins indiana by a point, what does ted cruz do from here? where does he go from here? what's his rationale after this. cruz has thrown it all out there. use every metaphor. throwing all the ships on the table. tried the alliance with kasich. if none of it works, where does he go? >> chuck todd, thank you. watch "meet the press" this sunday. the guest is senator ted cruz. >> convenient. there you go. breaking overnight. north korea sentences a u.s. citizen today to ten years in prison on espionage charges. soldiers led the south korean

>> reporter: this is a strange story. a calm security guard at the fox tv station kept the suspect distracted while employees got out. the suspect is now identified at 25-year-old alex breezy. he claimed he had a bomb and he was talking about a government conspiracy. social media video shot by a fox station employee of baltimore police confronting a suspect who claimed he had a bomb. >> get on the ground! >> reporter: at refusing to surrender police open fire. it all started when a man wearing an animal costume, surgical mask and what appeared to be explosives on his chest showed up at the tv station carrying a flash drive that he said he wanted the station to air. a man who identified himself as edward breezy later told our baltimore affiliate wbal the suspect was his son alex breezy. a station security guard kept him distracted, alerting employees to evacuate. >> he kept on saying, you know, i don't want to hurt anyone.

i don't want to hurt you. but i just really want my message to be heard. i said, okay, i hear you. >> reporter: in the parking lot police say breezy had lit his car on fire. as he walked out of the station, s.w.a.t. officers were awaiting, guns drawn. they ordered him on the ground. when he refused, they opened fire. police stayed back as a robot moved in to remove the suspect's vest. it turns out the vest wasn't made of explosives. >> those devices were actually chocolate candy bars wrapped in aluminum foil with wiring connecting each of them. there was also a small motherboard. >> reporter: officers cautiously moved in. the suspect, taken to a waiting armored vehicle. photos on facebook confirmed as the suspect by his father give a glimpse into breezy's life. his dad telling the fox station his son is not a threat and a recent breakup may be to blame. >> it looks like he has had a mental breakdown. he has no way of doing a bomb or

anything. >> reporter: edward breezy saying his son said a few weeks ago that he had had a revelation from god or from jesus that the world is going to come to some sort of a terrible adjaceevent e 3rd and he was trying to get the word out on the flash drive. >> thaufrn. the fbi arrested three more people in connection with the san bernardino shooting in december. three people related to the shooters were involved in a marriage scheme to allow one to remain in the united states fraudulently. investigators uncovered the sham marriage during their investigation into the december shootings that killed 14 people and wounded 22 others. this morning there is a new twist in the investigation into the death of pop superstar prince. law enforcement now reportedly looking into what role a doctor or doctors may have played in a possible drug overdose. nbc's stephanie gosk is in minnesota with the latest. hi, stephanie. >> reporter: good morning, matt. with no official cause of death,

details of the investigation into prince's final days continue to leak out. the associated press reporting that investigators are looking into whether a doctor prescribed drugs for him that led to an overdose and whether a doctor was on board that plane that made an emergency landing in the days before his death. meanwhile, his family has had their first meeting about the estate, and it could get complicated. no will, no spouse, and no children. prince's estate, which is estimated to be worth as much as $300 million, will be split among his surviving siblings. they met for the first time on thursday in minneapolis. including prince's half-brother alfred jackson who afterwards spoke with nbc news exclusively. how was it to see everybody? >> pretty good. it made me feel better. >> reporter: he admitted an estate like this is not easily divided. >> everything was everywhere. i have a theory that perhaps he

intended it this way so that he could in an unbiased way, share with all of his siblings. >> reporter: is this going to be tough? >> well, not from our end. >> reporter: jackson says it's been years he's been in contact with his brother. he saw paisley park for the first time this week. >> i knew he built it with his own hands. so i just wanted to see it. >> rep hands. >> reporter: as the family negotia negotia negotiates, the sheriff's office worries the intense scrutiny could jeopardize the investigation. the search warrant was filed the day prince died. the calls for service were revealed in the last five years. police requested for suspicious activity and alarms and fires. then last year, medical with no further details. ♪ purple rain, purple rain

morning. welcome to the new biloxi river. we are 100 yards away from the edge of the river typically is. this morning, it is cresting 4.5 feet above flood stage. this was caused by a massive storm yesterday. i want to show you what it looked like. more than 10 inches of rain fell in a couple of hours. it was a dramatic scene. mayor declared an emergency here. there were more than 200 911 calls. it is a wild week of weather across the country. more than 22 tornadoes touching down in seven different states. authorities from across the country have been most concerned about the tornado alley area in the midwest where they have seen a severe bout of severe weather. back here in mississippi, they are concerned that the water level will rise a couple more inches as we move forward. no homes are in the immediate threat danger, but the wild weather and heavy rain will continue throughout the weekend.

happening in los angeles. two nuns battle it out in court to determine if katy perry has a right to own their former convent. take it as an article of faith. real estate can be an unholy mess. who owns the right to sell the 22,000 square foot mansion that once housed the blessed virgin mary convent. none of the nuns live on the property but they still believe the right to sell is theirs and two of them struck a deal with the local developer to buy the property for $15.5 million in june of last year. >> i got very swept away by the sisters. >> the los angeles diocese claims the sell is invalid and the nuns gave control of the property to them in 1992. they entered into a similar deal with pop star katy perry. the dispute made it to the los angeles superior court and just over two weeks ago the judge

ruled in favor of the arch diocese referring from a decree from the vatican dismissing the sisters case. the sisters argue the decree was incorrectly translated and now filed a motion for reconsideration in order to save the decision. >> it clearly says matters are not concluded in the vatican. the judge should not have ruled that matters were concluded. >> first part the archdiocese stated their main concern is and have always been the care and wellbeing of all the heart of mary sisters and they stand with the court's ruling that protects all the sisters from an invalid transaction. though they pledged to look after the five remaining sisters until their death. what's at stake is who controls the money. >> the sisters have the ability to control their own affairs. >> she says this is not about her or katy perry saying it is

authorities say a man shot by a police sniper outside a baltimore police station is expected it survive. the 25-year-old man was wearing a panda costume, surgical mask and claimed to have a bomb. it turned out to be a flotation device with candy bars wrapped in foil connected with wires. police had to use a robot to disconnect the device. one of the mormons hurt in the terrorist bombings is now home. he was greeted by family, friends and lots of yellow ribbons. he spent a month recovering in the burn unit. a new twist this morning in the case of two florida teenagers who disappeared off the coast of florida during a fishing trip last year. the teens' families suspect that foul play may have been involved. their fishing boat was discovered off bermuda last month with an iphone and a tackle box on board. the family is now demanding that the phone, which was heavily damaged by salt water, be turned

over to third-party investigators so it can be examined. finally, what do you call 12 police officers who need help? if you are the firemen called to rescue them, a photo op. these officers got stuck in the elevator at the police academy in kansas city, missouri. before getting them out they documented the situation. the police department posted the photo on their facebook page saying, well, that was embarrassing. a little rivalry. they're like, oh, you need our help? okay. they took a picture of them. >> thank you. >> ignore him. when it comes to maternity leave there is plenty of controversy in the country over the lack of guaranteed paid time off. >> one woman is taking the fight a little bit further raising the question should all workers be entitled to the equivalent of a maternity leave even if they don't have children. nbc's morgan radford is here with more on that.

this is going to get interesting. >> a very hot debate. meghan floyd called her new novel meternity. it was based on her life as a career woman who saw colleagues leave for months on end after having a child. in general she thought some extended time away would be go for anyone. when she linked that to maternity leave she got a furious debate. >> what to expect when you're expecting. dirty diapers. not much sleep. that's why new parents take maternity leave. author meghan foy turned that idea on its head with her novel called "meternity." it's about a woman who fakes pregnancy to take paid time off to figure her life out. foy is quoted in the book as saying, i couldn't help but feel envious when parents on staff left at 6:00 p.m. to attend to their children while it was assumed co-workers without kids would stay behind to pick up the

slack. the back lash was swift. one tweeting it trivialized parenthood. one says it's only a good idea if the people on meternity leave can sleep four minutes every four hours for the next four years. she says her book was meant as a fun look as a personal journey. >> i actually think they're very different. i think a maternity leave is when you're fully focused on a new human being and a meternity leave is when it's really just for you, it's a time to take a step back. >> she took that step for herself a few years ago. >> i decided to save up money, quit my job and start to carve out a free-lance writing career and work on this book. >> she says she doesn't think companies should give every worker paid extended time off, and she also says she wasn't attacking mothers.
