pivotal role on tuesday. there is a lot on the line. ted cruz stumped in indiana on friday trying to stop trump on tuesday. protesters in california tried to stop the billionaire in his tracks, clashing with police and breaking down barricades. the most violent since chicago last month. and they tried to get to the conference near san francisco. >> that was not the easiest entrance i ever made. my wife called. she said there are helicopters following you. we went under a fence and through a fence. oh, boy. i felt like i was crossing the board actually. i was crossing the border, but i got here. >> reporter: cruz and running mate, former candidate carly fiorina, appeared in the hoosier state. >> i am proud to stand next to this man.

the man i believe must be our nominee. a great leader and fight for the soul of our party. >> reporter: the stop trump movement could grind to a halt if he nabs the winner take all primary and establishment republicans like mike pence seemed resigned to the looming prospects of a nominee trump. >> i want to commend trump. i'm not against anybody, but i will vote for ted cruz. >> reporter: at the plant in indiana, jobs have surged since the great recession. doubling to 4,000. and the purchase manager believes that a trump presidency will keep his plant going. >> i like he is not afraid to stand up for what is right. i feel he is a good businessman. >> reporter: both trump and cruz have scheduled events in indiana between today and tuesday to try to get the voters on the fence

over to their yards. >> thank you, ron. >> we have elise jordan here with us this morning. nice to have yo >> hi. >> this is winner take all on tuesday in indiana. is this cruz's last stand? do we wake up on wednesday to the notion that donald trump is the nominee? >> it is not over until the june 7th primary. there are still over 300 delegates left until june 7th f out of 500. i believe it is california or bust. if ted cruz loses in indiana, it will be really hard for him to win in california. i believe it is much better for him to have a strong showing in indiana. >> what is the play for the republican party here on two levels? one, do they start telling ted cruz maybe you should drop out and make way for donald trump

and do they rally behind donald trump? >> i think you will see fragmentation among republicans as they come to grips with donald trump. there will be opposition from him who are ideological opposed to trump's versus of democrat light. he has been a democrat most of his life. there are plenty of conservatives who will never accept that. there will be those republicans who see principles for power and follow trump as he comes closer to the nomination. >> how concerned are you as a republican strategist what this is doing to the party? you see the scenes like yesterday in california. violent protests. blood, bloody faces, protesters knocking down barricades. what does this do to the party long term? >> i think it is horrible for the party, but a microcosm for the party as a whole.

this is more than partisan division. the country needs a leader to draw them together, not push them apart. that's what i worry about instead of bringing people together, trump is galvanizing people to bully other americans. >> if you were ted cruz's top strategist, what would you say to him? >> stay in. stay in. >> elise jordan. >> thanks for having me. to the severe storms slamming the south. from texas to indiana. today, tens of millions of people are facing the threat of more wild weather. nbc's jay gray is in dallas this morning. >> good morning, sheinelle. we are between storms here this morning. cities have taken a beating over the last several days.

the area this morning is bracing for what could be more severe weather. >> reporter: the assault by mother nature began late yesterday and continued overnight. violent winds, heavy rain. >> tornado on the ground. >> reporter: tornadoes and hail across the midwest and plains. 25 million in the potential strike zone. including the family that lived in this southwest oklahoma home. >> we had no idea. we were inside the storm shelter at the school. never would have thought that we would not have a house. >> reporter: everything in sight scattered for miles. some of the worst damage in oklahoma where a large tornado tore through a barn downing trees and power lines. the funnel caught on camera in dorchester, texas, where residents were told to take shelter. in lindale, texas, storm waters washed away the road. hail battered texas. golf ball-sized ice downed

affiliate's truck kxas. hours were delayed at international airport. flood waters are already rising across the south, including gulfport, mississippi, again under water with the potential of more severe weather in the forecast across the region through the weekend. >> that includes the possibility of more flooding, tornadoes and hail in an area where so many are still picking up from the string of violent weather through the week. sheinelle. >> jay gray, thank you. >> dylan is here with more. how bad will it be? >> today it will move east. we could see severe storms, but the threat is for flooding rain. the ground is saturated. we had several tornadoes reported yesterday across texas and oklahoma. we had 3 to 5 inches of rainfall in the midwest. this is part of the bigger

system. snow on the northwest side of the system. severe storms on the southeast si side. it is rainy and wet in the ohio valley and great lakes. we had flash flood watches and the red boxes indicate flood warnings. any additional rain will make the situation worse. and that is what we will see. as we put on the radar here, we have cloud-to-ground lightning and torrential rain. these indicate where we have heavy rain. as we go through the day, this moves into southeastern louisiana. as it does, it will produce pockets of heavy rain. we get a bit of a break on saturday. as we go into monday, more wet weather into southeastern texas and louisiana. that could exacerbate the flooding. we have potential of severe storms in st. louis today. today's threat is large hail, isolated tornadoes. the rain and flooding is going to be the biggest concern with

another 2 to 4 inches possible. >> dylan, thanks. investigators looking for clues in the untimely death of prince. that's not the only mystery swirling this morning. did the rock icon leave behind a treasure trove of music that could be worth millions. nbc's stephanie gosk is digging into the story for us. >> reporter: what has become clear in the days since prince's death, even for the loyal fans, the pop icon, despite his fame, kept much of his life private. including most of his music. a secret archives so big, it eclipses the work everyone knows well. this music reporter interviewed him. >> i asked prince because he hasn't had time to go through archives if he intended these songs to come out after he was gone. he said i don't think about

the iphone discovered in the boat near bermuda. stepanos father will ship the iphone to apple. any data will be reviewed by the court and released to perry cohen's family if the judge deems is relevant. >> we are pleased that the judge ordered that the phone be sent some place for a thorough, transparent and truthful investigation. >> reporter: florida investigators had the iphone in rice to dry it out before returning it to austin's father. lawyers for perry's mother said it should be analyzed and preserved as material evidence in a possible crime. amid her concerns, the boat may have been tampered with. >> no one wants another party filtering what in their view is relevant. especially a mom who is searching for answers for her son. >> >> reporter: in r 128-page law

enforcement report, this revelation, a volunteer search pilot spotted someone clinging to debris, but lost sight of them after he radioed it in. >> three times long enough to clearly see a person laying on this debris and the person was moving their arms. >> reporter: this morning, it's unclear how long it will take engineers at apple to see if the iphone holds any secrets. for "today" carrie sanders, nbc news miami. church carnival in el paso, texas. 16-year-old girl killed and a friend was injured when they were thrown off of a sitting ride. the victim hit a barricade. police are checking to see if the ride was properly inspected. >> a funeral is planned for one of the eight people massacred in ohio. she was shot to death last week along with seven members of her family. mourners gathered last night to remember the victims.

police discovered a marijuana-growing operation on the family's property. they made no arrests. meanwhile, $25,000 reward for information has been withdrawn as details of the investigation come to light. a narrow escape for a truck driver in a furniture delivery gone horribly wrong. the delivery truck was stopped on a street in worchester, massachusetts, when it began to roll. look at this, the worker unloading a couch had just enough time to jump off. surveillance cameras captured the whole mess. the truck smashed into a wall and took out a porch and street sign before coming to a stop. no one was seriously hurt. a drag racer is recovering from a horrific crash. sidney frigo lost control of his car at a racetrack last night in texas. look at that. his car sliding into the wall, as you can see, flipping over and over and over again before landing upside down. a report described frigo as, quote, responsive to medical personnel when he was pulled

from the wreck. luckily he survived. >> dylan is back with the rest of the forecast. >> i mentioned the snow on the northwest side of it. we have heavy snow falling in north plat, nebraska right now. we'll see some rainy snow sho r showery type of mix going on in denver. up near casper more snow. the moisture is there and the cold air is certainly in place, too, sagging down from the north. but it's springtime in the rockies. this isn't totally unusual. last spring we didn't have much snow to talk about. cheyenne, 6 to 8 inches. zrern not so much because it's more of a mix. you go into the higher elevations, we could end up with a foot of snow. the stronger storms that we're going to see today exist from the midwest right down into the gulf coast. they will be exiting the houston area, but we're not in the clear this week yet because while we will get a break tomorrow, more severe weather is possible as we go into monday. within this little zone here, we could end up seeing those

court yesterday. his 17-year-old brother was arraigned in the hallway and will be tried as an adult. they both admit to being home during the killings but the 17-year-old says his older brother 22-year-old hasib killed both parents. court documents claimed hasib admitted to killing his father but not mother. the district attorney's office says the father was shot more than 12 times. the mother once in the head. >> they point to mental illness or will the prosecution say that they point to some type of a staging of the crime scene, portraying it more like a manson style killing as opposed to a family killing. >> investigators are working to determine the motive. police found writings on the walls of the family home presumed written by the suspect. one says, quote, sorry my first kill was clumsy. if convicted they face life in prison. both pleaded not guilty. new this morning a homicide

older brother hasib killed both parents. court documents claim hasib admitted to killing his father but not mother. the district attorney's office says the father was shot more than 12 times, the mother once in the head. >> they point to mental illness or will the prosecution say they point to some type of staging of the crime scene, portraying it more like a manson-style killing as opposed to a family killing. >> investigators are still working to determine the motive. if convicted of the double homicide, they face life in prison. both pleaded not guilty. new this morning, a homicide investigation in the south bay. officers tell us a woman was shot at a home on indigo oak lane not far from highway 101 in san jose. it happened shortly before 1:00 this morning. well that victim was taken to the hospital where she died. police say they have one man in custody. and it's just shy of 6:29.
