and the police. nbc's goddy schwartz is there. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. boarded up windows after a chaotic night. police say they were trying to take a hands off approach but when people started throwing things at them they had to go from crowd control into riot mode. the violence started with clashes throughout the city, some demonstrators armed for a fight. quickly the mayday protest in seattle escalated. into flash bangs and pepper spray. >> we do not want to get hurt. we don't want to hurt anybody. >> reporter: protesters sprinting for cover, seattle police saying they were attacked about rocks and bottles. >> the seattle police department works hard to protect the first amendment rights of those of our city. the demonstrators put innocent people in jeopardy so we had to take action. >> reporter: earlier many focused anger on what they call a capitalist system.

>> i'm sick and tired capitalism destroying this country. >> reporter: some bystanders criticized the crowd. >> do something positive. >> reporter: as darkness began to fall smirmish lines continue toed to push. armored officers formed a moving wall. making multiple arrests as the crowd thins and while most demonstrations across the country were peaceful, once again for the fifth year in a row, seattle is cleaning up after another riot on the first day of may. >> reporter: all told, 9 protesters were arrested. four officers were injured. two of those officers from thingsing thrown at them, one of those officers was actually bitten by a protester, all of them expected to be okay. matt and savannah, back to you. >> gadi, thanks very much. >> tomorrow's potentially

supportive in a second ballot. now we're reading in the paper it today some of those are softening and maybe thinking i don't know if i'm a cruz person after all. >> yeah. i think that you can describe it as losing by winning. he was sort of winning some of these back room deals and the opaque side of presidential politics, but all along the way trump was gaining on him by cementing his message that someone is trying to take something from him. so i think cruz made -- i don't think cruz is going to be the republican nominee but he made some damaging missteps, the kasich-cruz alliance was a bust. this game looked like shenanigans. and i think at the end of the day the republican party is going to have to come to terms with trump as the nominee. >> the democratic side, pretty close between hillary clinton and bernie sanders in indiana according to the polls. if bernie sanders loses, indiana, i think then he has to win something like 95% of all remaining delegates before the convention.

what is he say to his supporters when he gets on the stage tomorrow to justify going forward? >> what's weird about this is if you look at the map between now and the end for democrats he coulcould win tomorrow. looks like it will be close. even if he loses tomorrow he is likely to keep winning states until the end. there are a few left like west virginia, a week later that are probably going to be bernie sanders states. what this reminds me of you go back eight years, clinton versus obama in the primaries, hillary clinton was winning through the end. it was the math wasn't working and the key difference was at the end of that process, as soon as it ended she said that's it i'm not fighting, the question is when we get to june 7 will sanders make the same. >> sanders is talking about a contested convention as recently as this weekend. >> eight years ago it was how hillary clinton being a good girl, get behind obama and help him win. i don't see the same pressure applied to sanders. at a point where trump is telegraphing everything that sanders says about clinton

calling her unethible. he made a bit of a mess for the democratic party. >> sanders opening the wounds and the republican nominee is going to pour salt in those. all right. thank you very much. >> we'll be watching. millions across the south are facing another severe weather threat after a weekend of heavy rain and flash floods. miguel almaguer is in louisiana west of baton rouge this morning. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. this area has been hit hard by a deluge, many homes in this area have flood damage. now comes insult to injury, this region under a flash flood watch. the one thing this area does not need more of is water. the deadly storms pounding the south have shown no mercy. rain, hail, lightning, and tornados. crippling communities in at least four states. while in kentucky, flash flooding swept away one person who this morning has been

confirmed dead. today, 4 million under flash flood watches. >> you got in your boat. >> reporter: in lake charles where streets and homes inundated, they are bracing for more swift water rescues today after ten inches of rain. >> all the rooms are flooded. my floors are gone. >> reporter: the storm system that flooded louisiana killed six in texas over the weekend. among those unable to escape the fast-rising flood waters, four children, 6 through 9 years old, along with their great-grandmother. it wasn't the only community in the bull's eye. >> that is crazy. thank you lord i got off of this. >> reporter: in lynndale, floods washed away roads and cars. at least 37 twisters touched down last week, now today the threat of more severe weather is here again. while they are keeping a close

eye on flash flooding another major concern is local rivers, if they go over flood stage they could burst their banks and threaten communities downstream. it's beginning to rain another dangerous and dicey day. >> miguel, thank you. new developments this morning in the investigation into the untimely death of prince. the battle over his estate heading to court as the superstar's long time chef speaks out about changes and problems he noticed. stephanie gosk has the latest on that. good morning. >> reporter: matt, good morning. prince's siblings and attorneys are here to begin only just begin the process of dividing his estate. the mystery of his death continues to deepen, that cook worked for prince for three years. he says he noticed prince's health start to slip. this morning new details about the final days of prince's life. his special chef ray roberts

reveals rare insight telling the associated press, it felt like he wasn't himself, probably the last month or two. i think he was struggling with being sick a lot. roberts tells the ap the music icon was suffering from sore throats and a stomach illness. his final show on april 14th in atlanta was plagued by cancellations, though what was said to be the flu. when asked about reports of prescription painkillers and addiction roberts said not even a hint. not at all. echoing what others close to prince who want to remain private have told nbc news. but law enforcement sources say prescription painkillers were found on his body and in paisley park. finding out what role they may have played and who prescribed them is at the heart of an investigation. while mystery surrounds the days leading up the family has begun the legal process to divide the estate. there appears to be no will, and his assets complicated including a mountain of unreleased music

that is nearly impossible to put a price tag on. the estate is estimated to be worth up to $300 million now. the music could potentially make it worth much more. >> for a man so fsophisticated, no road map, chaos is bound to ensue. ♪ >> reporter: the conservative guess is legal wrangling will take years. a source connected to the family tells me that these negotiations have already become contentious and only just begun. matt and savannah, back to you. >> thank you very much. puerto rico's detective crisis, the government will default today on $422 million in debt payments. its governor announced on sunday what he called the painful decision saying they can't pay the bonds without cutting essential services. officials spent the weekend trying to negotiate a settlement

that would have avoided the default, the territory can't declare bankruptcy. and a rescue bill has stalled in the u.s. congress. things could get worse this summer when another payment of more than $700 million is due in july. tens of thousands of public school students in detroit have an unexpected day off. detroit public schools made the decision to close after the teachers union urged members to call in sick in a protest over funding issues. the district says unless it gets more funding from the state it will have no money to pay teachers after june 30. teachers sick-out in january caused tens of thousands of students to miss class. speaking of schools, the major milestone for the first family. the white house announced that the obamas eldest daughter will attend harvard university. first a year after after graduating high school. kristen welker has more on that. good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah, good morning. i'm of course out on the trail covering the race for the white

house but it's the current residents of 1600 pennsylvania avenue who are also making big news today. malia obama has been visiting colleges, speculation about her future. he made her decision. it's harvard. she's the oldest daughter of the nation's first african-american president, but now malia obama is preparing to make a mark of her own. after graduating this spring the 17-year-old will take a so-called gap year and then attend harvard university in the fall of 2017. the president joking this weekend there are still rules as long as malia is under his roof. >> a young person said she was sick of politicians standing in the way of her dreams. as if we were going to let malia go to bernie man this year. >> he has talked candidly how much he will miss her. >> i'm not ready for her to leave, and that was -- i was asked if i would speak at her graduation. i said absolutely not.

good morning, everybody. 7:30. it's may 2nd, 2016. sunny skies and happy crowd. we're starting off the new work week. glad to have you along. we'll be outside in a bit. let's take a look at the headlines this monday morning. another day of flooding for parts of the south. nearly a foot after rain has already fallen in southern louisiana, leading to dozens of swift water rescues there. at least six people died when severe weather hit texas over the weekend. >> reporte . firefighters still putting out hot spots from a fire that gutted a historic church here in manhattan. flames were shooting out through the window and roof of the serbian orthodox cathedral. it was built in the early 1850s

and luckily empty at the time. hours earlier, it was packed for orthodox easter celebration. sunday marks the end of an era for the ringling brothers and barnum and bailey circus. the elephants staged their final performance during a show in rhode island. they'll be moved to florida where they'll live out their retireme retirement. a new rossen reports highlighting more trouble for starbucks. after slapped with a lawsuit over its hot drinks, now another lawsuit is claiming issues with the coffee company's giant iced drinks. today, national investigative correspondent jeff rossen has been following the developments. >> good morning to you. first, as you mentioned, the lawsuit against starbucks claiming they underfill hot lattes. we told you about that weeks ago. measured for ourselves. now, a starbucks customer in chicago is filing this new class action, saying starbucks is underfilling the cold drinks, too.

adding enou ining too much ice. this morning, she's demanding $5 million from starbucks to pay back all of you who buy these drinks. >> reporter: when you order an iced drink at starbucks, the a barista fills it up and then adds the ice. they're saying starbucks is misrepresenting the cold drinks. the customer often getting much less than advertised. nearly half as many fluid ounces. in a vende, starbucks advertises 24 fluid ounces. according to the lawsuit, you get 14 ounces of liquid. >> it's an interesting case. >> reporter: legal analyst karen de soto reviewed the case. >> they include this photo of the cup. the claim is the black lines are fill lines, and saying, only fill the liquid up to the black lines and fill up the rest of the cup with ice.

what do you make of this? >> it could be a valid argument. the plaintiff clearly believes this is an admission that starbucks knew they were doing something wrong. the ultimate question is going to be, is ice a fluid, or is it going to be considered a solid? >> reporter: starbucks telling nbc news the suit is without merit. our customers understand and expect that ice is an essential component of any iced beverage. but this isn't the first time starbucks has been accused of underfilling. just weeks ago, another lawsuit claiming its hot lattes are approximately 25% underfilled. >> can i have a grande latte? >> reporter: i went undercover to test it out. >> grande latte. >> thank you. >> reporter: while the website says nutritional information may vary, in stores, a grande latte is listed at 16 fluid ounces. the first came up short. >> this is the 12 ounce mark,

and the 16 ounce mark is all the way here. >> close but not 16. >> reporter: they all missed the mark. >> that's really low. >> reporter: at the time, starbucks told nbc news the lawsuit and our experiment were unscientific and without merit. because lattes are hand crafted and customers want the foam on top. foam and now ice. starbucks defending its multi-billion dollar empire. >> we should mention both the lawsuits are in the early stages. we'll have to see what happens. this latest one covers everything from iced coffee to iced tea and their hand crafted sodas. starbucks telling us, if you don't think you got the full among, ask to have them make it again. i've gotten tweets this morning from baristas this morning. when somebody says, no ice or half ice, we're happy to help. >> on the side. >> how many cups do you want? >> and avoid filing a lawsuit. >> there's that.

we're back at 7:41 with a special series, where are they now? case closed. this week, we're looking closer at the biggest crimes in history. starting with the murder case against o.j. simpson. in a moment, we'll have an exclusive, live interview with former prosecutor christopher darden. first, the attention being given to the so-called trial of the centu century. >> reporter: the crime, the case, the glove, the verdict. >> find the defendant not guilty of the crime of murder. >> reporter: more than 20 years after the trial of the century, the o.j. simpson saga is captivating the nation once again. >> not guilty. >> reporter: adapted for tv, as "the people versus oj simpson," the mini series played up the racial tension. and its ties to reality tv. >> stop running.

>> reporter: but that show is only the start. at least two more tv specials are in the works, including one titled "hard evidence: o.j. is innocent," produced by martin sheen. saying marscia clark and christopher darden -- >> this is a simple case. >> -- how they presented to a jury. >> reporter: and there was a different tension outside of the courtroom. with the show's popularity, simpson's guilt or innocence is taking a backseat to his celebrity, and it's coming as he may be a free man. he is 8 years into a 33-year sentence for a kidnapping and armed robbery. he's up for patrol next year. chris darden wrote a book called "in contempt" and has been reissued as an ebook. nice to meet you. >> nice to meet you.

>> you have not attempted to watch the series? >> i lived through it and knew the series would not be accurate. i couldn't see any reason why i should watch it. >> what's it like now? it's been 20 years and, suddenly, everyone is talking about the o.j. simpson case. you turn on your tv and see the images. >> it's the trial that never dies. it just goes on and on into perpetui perpetuity. i'm amazed 20 years later, people are still talking about the verdict. >> is it painful to relive it in this way? is it cathartic? >> neither. by not paying a whole lot of attention to it, that's the healthiest thing for me to do. then i go on social media sometimes and see what people say. i'm going to ignore this. >> keep out of it. >> yeah. >> let's talk about the trial itself. you came in rather late, after the jury had been picked. what was your first thought when you walked into the courtroom. >> i looked at the jury, and george looked at me, and i looked at the body language.

i could tell, you know, from the very first moment, that there were jurors who did not like me and did not appreciate me being on the panel. i wondered why the jury wasn't more diverse. i was surprised. >> you feel the case was almost won or lost in jury selection? >> i think cases are won and lost in jury selection all the time. i think that this one is probably one of them. >> let's talk about the racial tensions that were just shot through the case. you mentioned the jury. there was the back drop of lapd and its history in the black community. this was mark ferman. the allegations that o.j. was framed because he was black. and here you are, the african-american prosecutor. what was it like, to be in that role? >> i didn't think i was there because i was african-american. a lot of people said that and wrote that and published that. i thought i was there because i was a good lawyer, a good prosecutor. that's what i tried to focus on. i didn't pay a lot of attention to the media at first, until the

media started paying attention to me. then we had an argument one day, before martin luther king's birthday about race, and the "n" word and it was then an issue for me. >> johnny cochran got really heated. >> i was offended then and offended now. it was an outrageous thing for one lawyer to say about another in a public courtroom. >> did you patch things up with johnny cochran. >> yeah. johnny and i were fine. i wish he were here so we could argue about this some more. continue my closing statement in the simpson case. >> the other thing the series gets into is the suggestion that perhaps you and marcia clark had a romantic relationship during the trial. care to confirm or deny? >> well, i'll tell you what,

i'll wait until marcia is sitting next to me. >> to talk about it? >> in greater detail. you know, people want that. they want a happy ending to what was otherwise a happy ending. >> would be understandable. >> look at it from my position as a lawyer. people looking back at the trial. if i would have said i had a relationship with marcia clark, people would say, we lost the case because we were more interested in intimacy than in the law and the facts. that'd be an even worse position to be? >> i have to ask you about the moment o.j. simpson tried on the glove. for those who think the trial was lost in that moment, what do you say? >> you have to look at the chronology of events in the case. number one, i think the trial was lost before then. i think the glove thing was the most brilliant move in any criminal courtroom in the history of -- >> you do not regret it? >> i can't regret it. it's the past.

i think that desperate times call for desperate measures. you know, for me as a lawyer, i'm always one to try and win. always going to try and save my case. if it's a little unorthodox, the approach i take, because i don't have a whole lot of other approaches. >> as we sit here today, are you glad you served on the simpson case. >> no. no. >> really? >> the first day i was supposed to appear, i was having back spasms, at home, couldn't get off the floor. i thought i was having a heart attack. i should have stayed on the floor. >> changed your life? >> changed my life. changed me. >> christopher darden, good to catch up with you. thank you for being here. >> my pleasure. >> the book is called "in contem contempt" and you can find it as an ebook. marcia clark will be here later. she'll sit down with kathie lee and hoda. also ahead, history in the making. we'll check in with kerry sanders, aboard the

just one day until the indiana primary. our latest poll shows republican donald trump surging to a 15-point lead there over ted cruz. a trump victory could be decisive. on "meet the press" cruz refused to say if he would support trump as the nominee and insisted it will come down to a convention fight. on the democratic side, bernie sanders is now predicting that his party's convention will also be contested. hillary clinton is looking beyond indiana. although, her lead in the state is only by ten points. ten years -- 16 years, rather, after they were buried by an avalanche, two bodies have been found. they had set out to film a documentary series for nbc sports. lowe was one of the best climbers of his generation. the remains were found last week by two european climbers. lowe's family will make a pilgrimage to the site.

now a "today" exclusive. after more than five decades, a u.s. cruise ship is heading into port in havana, cuba. it's one of the biggest commercial steps since last summer when the u.s. and communist cuba re-established diplomatic relations. the only television journalist reporting on live on the ship is nbc's kerry sanders. he has more on this historic journey. >> reporter: this morning, history is being made as this cruise ship becomes the first it in more than a half century to sail from miami to havana. until now, it might as well have been light years. it's the maiden voyage for this ship. >> we will be right at the heart of the city. just a few minutes walk from downtown. >> reporter: american passengers about to set on cuban soil, a country most u.s. citizens have been forbidden to visit since 1963.

>> we wanted to be part of history. it's exciting. it's an honor. >> reporter: the cuba they will see has many americans anxious to get here. before it all changes. >> i want to get there before burger king shows up. >> reporter: the voyage almost didn't happen. an old cuban law bans anyone born on the island from coming in by sea. cuban americans in miami protested. and the law changed. which is why anna garcia, who left havana when she was 6 is today among a dozen cuban born americans able to take this trip. >> i've been waiting 48 years, eight days and eight hours. i left on april 24, 1968. i've been waiting for a long time. it still seems absolutely surreal. excuse me. >> reporter: cruising to cuba comes with restrictions. passengers can't go to the beach and drink with the embargo still in effect. passengers technically are not tourists.

they are on an educational or cultural visit. >> it's very knew. it's happening so quickly. it's cool to see. >> reporter: one ship, 700 passengers, but a sign, perhaps, of more to come. >> i've met few americans who aren't curious about and really want to go and visit cuba and experience the culture and the people there. so we see lots of demand. >> reporter: we're almost there. i can't believe this. let's check. how close are we? >> two miles out. we're two miles out. >> reporter: two miles out. this is a history making moment. consider this, when you think about the history of these two countries, so far apart, finally coming together. americans getting ready to step off board the ship and step on to cuban soil, a country that in many ways is frozen in time. they will go to three ports in cuba every other week. it's about $1800. that's where it starts. there are other fees because of taxes.

these two sides of her world. when we watch this and see her doing what most people find distasteful, we still end uprootiuproot i uprouproot -- up rooting for her. >> that's why i liked the script. i was reading it and she was doing what one might consider bad or terrible things, and i still wanted her to win and was on her side. i thought if we could accomplish that with a tv show, it'd be an interesting thing to do. >> there are scenes in the show that are graphic is maybe not the right word, but they're intense sexually. it's not a first date show, i don't think, or a show you'd sit down and watch with mom. have you tried that? >> i have sat down with mom. >> how did that go? >> i fast forwarded some parts. my parents are both -- i haven't shown my dad -- but my mom is very, i guess, young for a mother and progressive. understands -- you know, i don't have conservative parents.

by the age of 60, melanoma rates are twice as high in men as they are in women. >> with that in mind, the american academy of dermatology created a new psa to encourage men to check themselves. take a look. >> take a good look at yourself. oh, yeah. and turn. oh, very nice. check yourself out. and find someone else to help. >> dermatologist deborah is here to give us the once over. good to see you. good morning. >> morning. >> the incidents in men, on the rise. is that because more men are getting themselves checked, or it's simply happening more often? >> it's happening more often. men are not as knowledgeable about skin cancer as women tend to be, and there have been surveys that have shown that they are not as likely to look at the way their skin is

changing. they're not as aware of the fact that, you know -- there's no such thing as a healthy tanner or a base tan that's good for you. >> is there a difference in the incidents between, say, men of color, and caucasian? >> skin cancer can occur in any skin type and any ethnicity. unfortunately, in men of skin of color, it's diagnosed later and when it's much more difficult to treat. for example, if you develop a malignant melanoma, your chance of survival for five years is around 70% and yours is around 93%. >> we talk about self-examination. there are simply places on your body you cannot look at yourself. you get somebody to help you. how often do you suggest you go to a trained professional? >> it depends on your family history, skin type and risk of skin cancer. have you had multiple burns over the past? do you frequent a suntanning salon? all those things add to it.

it's important to get a baseline skin test from your dermatologist to determine what's best for you. >> there is one spot our makeup artist always told me i should have checked. you look a picture of it earlier. we're going to look at it up close. anything i should be worried about. >> i like to use magnification to look at moles. it looks okay. what i'm seeing under the microscope, looking for asymmetry, the abcs. a border that's irregular color, multiple colors. anything bigger than the size of a pencil eraser or what's evolving. that looks okay for me. >> men to do a self-check, what do you look for? >> moles that are changing or evolving. something that a non-healing wound or growth. look for a crusty area that repetitively doesn't heal properly. or anything that is new. for you, for example, if you were to see a new spot on your

arm or something growing, you might be concerned. you want to be able to look at the head. have somebody look behind your ears. it's difficult for you, for example, to see the side burns or the back of your legs. on your buttock and the private areas. doing a skin exam, it's best to be in a well-lit area, mirrors. if you can engage with a partner, it would be helpful. >> you touched a second ago, moles evolving. can a mole like this, which is fine, turn into something that's not fine? >> yes. be aware of that mole. if your makeup artist or partner or someone in your family says, that's changing, betting bigger or darker, have that looked at. >> sunscreen, sunscreen, sunveresun j sunscre sunscreen. >> absolutely. protective clothing, seeking shade, avoiding the salons, your best bet. >> thank you, doctor. appreciate it. >> thank you.

we are back with today food and all this week, we are celebrating, who else, moms. donatella is a celebrity chef and mom. she has a sweet treat you can make for mother's day on sunday. i love the name and the sound of it. >> triple chocolate cheesecake. three types of chocolate. it looks complicated, but it's a great recipe and kind of easy. >> actually, i read it and i was not intimidated, which is saying something. >> eggs, graham crackers, butter, softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, sweet chocolate. >> let's start with the crust. >> you can use a food processor or just use a rolling pin and make a fine ground. can you pour it in? >> i can. what do we have in there? >> melted butter and sugar. >> try not to make a mess. >> stir this up. when it's well incorporated, you

pour it into a buttered spring form pan. with a glass, you smash it down. >> i was going to use my fingers. >> cook it for 5 to 7 minutes at 350. cook it and that's the first layer. here's the crust. >> just the bottom. >> now the cheesecake part. this is softened cheesecake. >> room temp. >> all the ingredients should be at room temperature so there are no lumps. pour in the sugar. >> as i do, i should mention the chom -- chocolate lovers are downstairs. >> forget mom, i'm making this for myself. >> incorporate the ingredients slowly. one at a time. >> is this melted chocolate? >> melted chocolate and eggs. >> should i not pour the entire thing of sugar in at once? >> you kind of -- it was okay. the idea is, if we had more time, each ingredient, one at a time arks l

time, allow it to mix before you add the next one. pour it on to here. >> fluffy. >> pour it on. >> you really do trust me. >> i do. bake it at 350 for 60 minutes. let it cool for at least four hours, or do it the night before and have it cool overnight. then the fourth and final element. >> the triple chocolate glaze. >> sugar, chocolate and cream. we melted it on a soft pan. create the glaze. >> we're calling that a ganache? >> yeah, a ganache, a glaze. >> if you're not a die-hard chocolate fan, which i don't understand but some people aren't, you could probably skip one of the chocolate steps, i suppose. >> but why would you? now, if we come over here -- and this is a great time for moms to be with their kids and decorate cakes. >> we have a celebrity guest. we have her little boy. >> you have flowers? >> hi, kiddo.

raleigh, just outside of it. 20 million people at risk. hail, damaging wind gusts and heavy rain. as the system pushes through, we still have flood watches in effect for parts of louisiana. this all moves east. during the day today, we could see travel problems from new orleans to atlanta, and more heavy showers and thunderstorms as waves of low pressure move up the eastern seaboard. look for, again, 1 to 3 inches of rain. concentrated down in southern louisiana, we could see 3 to 4 inches. that's where we're worried about flooding, south of i-10.
