chuck todd is nbc's political director and moderator of "meet the press." >> morning. >> paul ryan, among the most respected republicans in the country. how big a deal is it that he won't endorse donald trump yet? >> i think it's a big deal but i think there is an actual reason he didn't do it. besides his own personal issues. this is providing cover to other republicans running for re-election in 2016, who are looking for a way to essentially dump trump or distance themselves from him. he has given them cover. he's basically saying, i'm not there yet. when others decide -- maybe some members running for congress may say, i'm not going to endorse him at all, ryan gives them the cover to do that. where he won't get party criticism. if you're doing that, you're criticizing paul ryan. >> how big a problem is it -- we heard peter talking about mitt romney saying, i'm not going to vote. you hear other elite republicans saying things along that line. will it really matter and cut into his support among republicans? >> it does matter. you can look back at the party

that's not united, always loses the white house. i'll start from 2000. gore distances from clinton. republicans united. they win. 2008, it was mccain distancing himself from bush. clinton and obama got together. what do you got in 2012. 1992. every time you have a party that's not united, they lose. you can't look at it any other way. trump has to get this party united around him or he's not going to win in november. >> ryan is waiting to see if trump can display conservative principles. he hasn't done that yet. what could he possibly do to prove to paul ryan he is a conservative? >> i don't know. paul ryan, when you look at what drives paul ryan on his economic and fiscal policies and you hear the rhetoric coming from donald trump. let's take trade. they couldn't be farther apart. they're never going to get together. if donald trump is president of the united states and paul ryan is speaker of the house, they're going to be at odds as much as

paterno may have known about the sexual abuse allegation against jerry sandusky as early as 1976. "today" national correspondent craig melvin is here with the story. >> good morning. another twist in the long and public scandal that brought down the penn state football program. according to a court order filed wednesday, legendary head coach joe paterno knew about an allegation against sandusky 40 years ago. >> reporter: new allegations against a once-beloved coach. the 19-page court order with the insurance company and penn state over accusers. the insurance company claims in 1976, a child allegedly reported to joseph paterno he was sexually molested by sandusky. a report in 2012 stated that a 20001 incident was reported to the officials. he later told the grand jury he didn't know of any other incidents involving sandusky. the allegation comes as

72-year-old sandusky is back in court this week, seeking a new trial. he's currently serving 30 to 60 years in prison for 45 counts of child sex abuse, dating back to the '90s. his lawyer reading a statement from sandusky on monday. >> i am an innocent man serving what amounts to a life sentence. people have betrayed, attacked and vilified family, supporters and me. >> one thing, thanks and pray a little bit for those victims. >> reporter: joe paterno was fired in the scandal that rocked the university over allegations that he didn't properly report concerns about sandusky to authorities. he was never charged with any crimes. >> coach! >> we are penn state. that's right. >> reporter: the former head coach, who was admired and cherished at penn state, told reporters days before he was fired that, in hindsight, i wish i had done more. his family releasing a statement

late thursday reading, in part, joe paterno's reputation has once again been smeared with an unsubstantiated 40-year-old allegation. in response to the allegation and the media hype, the paterno family is demanding a public review of the facts. >> a spokesperson for penn state told nbc news it was aware of the allegations but the legal case and confidentiality precludes us from discussing these matters at all. we are sensitive to the needs and to honor the privacy concerns of potential victims. >> craig, thank you very much. for the first time in nearly four decades, north korea is holding a meeting of congress. kim jong-un is mounting speculation about a new generation of leaders that soon could be put in place. nbc's chief global correspondent

my mind. >> reporter: text messages revealed in the document suggest evidence of trouble in the couple's private life. ongoing financial and marital struggle, as well as intimate personal relationships external to the marriage. police say missy beavers had an exchange with a man on linkedin that turned flirtatious and the messages were intimate in nature. the man is not considered a person of interest according to police. investigators say the killer may have used a cell phone to photograph, record and/or video the victim and the murderous act. brandon beavers not talking about specifics. >> they talked about extramarital affairs. >> that's a leading question, to get me to talk, isn't it? >> investigators want at&t to do a tower dump of all the information from cell tower sites within a five-mile radius of where missy beavers' body was found. they say the cell phone data is

the investigation but was cast aside after committing suicide months after the murder. the private investigator believes there is a taped confession from him. >> i don't think mike did all this by himself. >> the theory is controversial. the indictments were revealed, it was shown they'd both been accessories to the first murder but neither had been indicted. the question becomes, who? the only other person in the house that night that we know of was burke ramsey. >> reporter: burke is reportedly working in the technology field. the bolder police department issued a statement to nbc news saying, two detectives are assigned to the case. they receive information on a regular basis that is evaluated. the city's district attorney also declined to be interviewed. >> it's an interesting situation in which many key players in the drama are either no longer with

you're going to take half dozen eggs, pour in some whole milk, some flour, some lemon zest, some salt, and some vanilla. >> did you guys just name it disturb baby? >> no. this is the traditional thing. we actually saw this recipe in the "new york times" and kind of adapted it. you're just going to pulse this thing. very simple. then you're going to -- it really is pretty quick. you're going to pour this into your skillet. let it set. and then you are going to take it and put it into a 375-degree oven for about 15 to 20 minutes. the way you'll know it's ready is that it's going to puff up. all right? >> is there a baby in there?

>> it looks like it. what's going to happen -- don't be alarmed. it starts like this but eventually will deflate. it is a souffle that's supposed to drop. because this one is a sweet one, we're going to make a little blueberry sauce. blueberries are out there right now. take a pint or do of blueberries, water, lemon zest, salt and some lemon zest. you're going to cook this down and just keep cooking it, cooking it, cooking it. it will eventually resemble this syrup. then you've got a nice compote basically which is also great on pancakes as well. you put that on and you just drizzle it. then you cut it up. it is nice and warm. the great thing is, if you want to substitute some cheese, you cut back the sugar on it, and you make a savory and it is spectacular. what's great about it, it reheats really well.

>> well, i moved from silicon valley to utah and i was missing the ocean. i didn't know what to do at first. then i started climbing mountains just for fun. and then one mountain led to another and we got bigger. we climbed denali in alaska with my good climbing partner, steve gasser. and while we were stuck in a storm actually at 17,000 feet for six days. we talked about, hey, what do you think about maybe climbing the seven summits and could we do it? >> that's not the reaction most people would have. they'd say we're never doing this again, but you said let's go higher. was there something inside you that made you go higher around sail farther? >> even as a kid i liked hiking a little further or sailing on a challenge on a windy day. there i just felt like i had a little more gas in the tank so i just wanted to see how far my body would take me. >> you just finished this about three weeks ago. april 17th. how are you feeling physically?

>> i'm starting to recover. we were sailing across the north pacific and we were on watch four hours on, four hours off. it's taken a while to get back to a regular sleep cycle and everything else but i'm glad to be home. >> i think most people think of mountain everest. what is it like? >> it is an amazing feeling. the first thing you do is try to catch your breath. it is at 19,000 feet. that's where 747s fly. then you realize how cold it is but you are elated you ma i had made it there and you have a celebration with your friends. >> what was the most perilous moment? >> i always felt within the safety bounds of what i like to stay in control. it was a challenge and i didn't know if i could do it. it was an endurance pushing me to -- this extreme of what i
