nbc bay area political analyst larry gersten is here. he's making inflammatory comments on our home turf. is there any truth? >> he's right about a couple of things, that the employment and job security are always on the forefront of just about everyone's mind. we know that much. and in this election year, vicky, yeah, the discussion about jobs is even more important because, look, of the decisions that you and i and other voters are going to be making come november. but that's not withstanding. sometimes claims and reality are not necessarily in sync and that may be the case. >> okay, larry. help us find context. what do we know about political decisions on taxes and minimum wage causing the workforce to go elsewhere? >> the fact is there's virtually no connection here. although there are always cases of someone moving, making that announcement a couple days ago, last thursday, that it will relocate headquarters in texas,

but you have to get beyond the isolated case here and there, look beyond those cases and in 2010 the public policy of california released a 15-year study on employment just in california. what did they find? the study learned that corporate relocation accounts for less than, get this, vicky, less than 0.1% of the state's jobs in any given year. in fact, california ranks below the national average. >> we are not losing jobs and the economy is and has been growing since 2009. where does california stand in terms of gaining our share of those jobs? >> we're gain iing our share. we're gaining our share and more according to government figures over the past year california added 420,800 new jobs this past year while florida added 234,300 new jobs. now that's roughly half of the share. in silicon valley it's gangbusters. the gains here have been

astounding according to the business climate survey. in 2015, 62% of the valley's companies added jobs while only 7% subtracted jobs. that is amazinging. >> i was wondering how silicon valley jobs and the fuel here plays into that state number. so you answered that question. how does this all fit in with the economic discontent we are seeing throughout the nation this past year? isn't that what's been fueling the campaigns of donald trump and bernie sanders? >> and that gets interesting. there's no question. whatever our problems here, and we have many, californians have a much brighter view of the direction of this state than they do of the nation. check out the latest poll released just about three weeks ago. what do you see? californians feel a whole lot better about the state, 52%, than they do the nation, about 30%. it's quite a contrast when you're looking at how people feel about how we're doing here versus the nation as a whole.
