outbreak quite like this. >> reporter: it is a rare, intense glimpse at nature's fury. a deadly, monster tornado, almost a mile wide, captured up close on camera, chewing through everything in its path. this morning, wynnewood, oklahoma, is assessing the damage. no structure spared. brick homes, mobile homes, wood-framed barns, ripped apart. >> it blew off of its foundation and is pretty much parked in the driveway. >> reporter: at least half a dozen twisters. >> there's a car right there. you need to back up. >> reporter: hammered the state all evening. >> hit another barn or another structure. >> reporter: across the country, at least 19 reported tornadoes, including touchdowns in nebraska and iowa. >> dangerous, dangerous situation here. >> reporter: while some storm-tested oklahomans didn't let hail stop their round of golf. other seasoned weather watchers were amazed at what they saw. >> look at the motion.

knife. the munich prosecutor says it is too soon to know whether the attack was motivated by islamic extremism. train personnel are being praised for being courageous and stepping in and preventing further attacks. >> keir simmons, thank you. we are getting our first look this morning at the canadian city ravaged by a massive wildfire. the flames moved far enough away from ft. mcmurray to give them a chance to see the area. 80% of homes in one neighborhood burned to the ground, and the wreckage of blackened and melted cars remains on the road. fire officials say almost 90% of the buildings in ft. mcmurray survived. justin trudeau vowed a multi-year commitment to rebuild the city. now to the troubling accusation leveled against facebook. a former worker is claiming it censored politically sensitive content from its popular

trending news side bar. this morning, facebook a scrambling to respond to accusations of political bias. after a report released monday by the website gizmodo, that says a team of facebook employees had intentionally suppressed news articles from conservative news sources. these news curators coming forward to say they were also instructed to artificially inject certain stories into the trending news module. in interviews, the curators describing grueling work conditions and humiliating treatment. according to a former journalist who worked on the project, workers prevented stories about mitt romney, rand paul and other conservative topics from appearing in the trending section, even though they were organically trending among the site's users. facebook boasts hundreds of millions of monthly active users. this story itself a trending

topic all night long. during facebook's april keynote address, mark zuckerberg touched on politics. >> we stand for connecting every person. for a global community. for bringing people together. >> reporter: in response to the allegations, a spokesman for facebook says it follows rigorous guidelines to ensure consistency and neutrality, and it works to be inclusive of all perspectives. we take allegations of bias very seriously. facebook is a platform for people and perspectives from across the political spectrum. the republican national committee released a statement on its website saying, in part, it is beyond disturbing to learn that this power is being used to silence viewpoints and stories that don't fit someone else's agenda. and other former curators they interviewed denied consciously suppressing conservative news. the outlet says it was unable to determine if left-wing news topics or others were suppressed. a lot of people will see if

there is truth to it. >> already trending on facebook. also one of the nation's top traffic safety organizations is issuing an urgent warning about a growing danger on the roads. driving while high. aaa says in some states that legalized marijuana, fatal accidents involving drivers who consumed pot are on the rise. nbc's tom costello is in washington, d.c., where pot has been legalized. tom, good morning. >> good morning. 13 more states considering whether to legalize marijuana. washington state was among the very first, and now aaa research suggests that people high on pot there were seen -- let me start that again. people are seeing a double in percentage in the number of people high on pot who then were involved in fatal accidents. driving under the influence isn't just about drinking and driving. >> so you smoked 30 minute ago, and you're saying that i'm not going to find any weed in this

horrific death. >> reporter: washington state legalized marijuana in 2012. this morning, aaa reports the percentage of drivers who had smoked pot and were then involved in fatal crashes in washington state more than doubled between 2013 and 2014 from 40 to 85. with his trademark smile, blake gaston was a brother, son, musician, student, computer wiz and so much more. >> even at 23 years, he had lived a hell of a life that was way, way too short, but he'd lived a hell of a life. >> some states set legal limits of exactly how much thc, the marijuana chemical, can be in your blood for you to be considered legally impaired. the new aaa research suggests those are meaningless. it doesn't accurately reflect real impairment. they think it's better for police to be able to be empowered to determine whether somebody is impaired. back to you. >> tom costello, thanks so much. let's go back to al, who is in new mexico with the forecast. >> that's right. a little brisk right now.

2011 killed five family members. joe fryer has the latest on this. good morning. >> when madonna badger lost her three children and both parents in the fire, it was her boyfriend who took blame for leaving ashes in the mudroom. according to a new report, he said he misled investigators and is now pointing a finger at madonna badger. this morning, she is responding. >> reporter: newly revealed court papers show the battles are still smoldering from a christmas fire. >> cause of a deadly christmas morning fire. >> the emotional funeral for three young sisters. >> it is impossible to describe how it is, you can't go in and save your own children. but i couldn't. >> reporter: that morning, madonna badger lost her three children and both parents. >> tragedy. horrific. >> reporter: investigators said the most likely cause was fireplace ashes left in a bag in the house's mudroom. badger's boyfriend had always

taken the blame. according to partial court documents obtained, he said during a recent lawsuit deposition, it was badger who left the bag of ashes in the room. he said he lied to protect madonna and to spare her from carrying the burden that maybe she had done something to hurt her family. now, madonna badger is responding to the allegation in an exclusive statement to nbc news. she said, i feel sorry for him. i feel incredibly sad for him. badger did not want to say any more because there is so much pending litigation. in 2012, she acknowledged but downplayed his initial claims about what he did with the ashes. >> i don't believe that the ashes caused the fire. so i don't believe that mike is responsible for starting the fire. >> reporter: she told matt she believes the flames were sparked by an electrical problem at the home, which was being renovated. >> so how is it that you have a little bit of ashes cause this

>> i'm so excited. we're going into the caverns. let's do it! the first thing you notice down here, the temperature drops up. up there, it's 100 degrees. here, it's in the 50s, humidity is higher and cave swallow droppings. it's like ambrosia. >> reporter: your eyes soon adapt to the dimness. the first people to explore the caves marvelled at structures that towered above their heads. they gave them names like fairy land, witch's finger and rock of ages. this is the whale's mouth. you can see pinocchio if you look close enough. >> reporter: and the impressiveness of the size of these caves heeded equally impressive names. like king's palace and the queen's chamber. >> what is this? >> this is the queen's chamber. known for its spectacular

draperies. look to the right. >> wow. >> reporter: a cave specialist here in carlsbad caverns. >> so many other places, everything is known about the caves. there are still a lot of unknowns here. >> absolutely. caves are one of the few places in the world we can actually go and be the first human to go there. to make the first footsteps in its passage. it's an exhilarating feeling, when you walk into a room that's never been explored before. don't know what you'll find around the next corner. just always a wonderful mystery. >> reporter: and wonderful mysteries abound at the caverns. around every corner in carlsbad cavern, there is a surprise. for example, 750 feet down indoor plumbing. that's what i call the wonder down under. while humans are visitors here at carlsbad cavern, many animals call this place home. in the late spring and summer, swarms of brazilian free tailed

bats emerge from the depths of the cave, in search of a meal. and every night, park visitors are invited to watch. the largest chamber in the caverns is called, appropriately enough, the big room. it is large enough to house six football fields. >> wow, we made it to the big room. this is truly amazing. wow. >> reporter: it's all amazing here in carlsbad caverns. everywhere you turn, a different picture-perfect painting by mother nature. a cave worth the climb. a park worth the trip. >> it really is awe-inspiring. also awe-inspiring, the elevator is broken. >> right. >> you have to walk down and up. our crew of abe and dave brought all their equipment back up. and our producer, jen long. they made the trip three times,

>> my mom loves the outdoors. she loves being around her friends. she still spends time with all her childhood friends and they go hiking in national parks every summer together. she loves nature, and we love, as a family, spending time together at our ranch, being in nature. >> one of my favorite memories with my mom was travels we took together. once, she took me rafting down the grand canyon. for six nights, we shared a tent. that shows you how much we love each other, that she'd share a tent with me for six days. >> i would describe my mom as lovely and kind and graceful. she has a calmness about her that's very refreshing and makes you feel calm, also. >> i am always astonished when i think back to the way that she raised us, which was, she never really pushed us. i think she wanted us to be curious and outspoken. i look at her quiet grace and

how she led us to be ourselves. and totally accepted us as who we are. i hope i can make mila and poppy feel the same way. >> i hope our mom knows we're so grateful that we have such a smart, funny, loving mom. >> i hope my mom knows how much she's impacted us. how much she showed us every single day, even when she was the first lady, that we were her top priority. and that she taught us the love of being outdoors, the love of reading, the love of really everything that i love comes from my mom. >> so sweet. >> cue the waterworks. >> made myself cry. >> you two, we have to pull it together. you've written this great book, "our great big backyard." how did this come about? >> i guess we both thought of it. we wrote another book together,

"read all about it," and we wanted to do another book. the centennial of the national parks was the perfect time to write a story about a little girl who was always taking selfies or looking at her tablet or playing video games. >> i was going to say, your protagonist, jane. there is an evil villain, the screen in this case. >> technology doesn't have to be used for bad things. i wrote the book when i was on maternity leave. we'd be in the car driving, new york city, seeing all these funny, fun things out the window, and all mila wanted to do was watch shows on the ipad. i want to live in a world where my girls look up. my mom -- what is wrong with me? my mom taught me and barbara to look up because our world has all of this magic in it. if you're constantly looking down at things, you'll miss out on the beauty of life. >> you probably remember when jenna and barbara were little. were they looking down or

looking out the windows? >> they didn't have the screens to look at. we tried to show them places we thought were beautiful. jenna and i got to go on the grand canyon colorado river trip and hike out of the south rim, ten mile hike. >> my mom goes with her best friends every year. they took daughters one year and never again. >> they got to go with us once but that was it. >> too much mother-daughter drama. >> the guys are definitely not invited. >> just my friends that i grew up with in midland, texas. we hike every year in the national park. we have 30 years. the first year we hiked together, we did the same colorado river trip. then hiking out of the south rim of the grand canyon. we did that for a second time with the girls. >> the first night, there was a crazy sandstorm and my mom wears 1980s hard contacts. she had to wear goggles. i remember dust and me leading my mother along and an opioid l

speaking of national parks. first, see what you think about this story. could you, should you be liable for texting someone if it causes that driver to get into a car accident? there is a court case in pennsylvania testing this idea. pennsylvania driver is being sued for wrongful death and negligence by the state of a motorcycle rider killed by a woman distracted by incoming texts. the judge was asked to determine if the men sending the texts to the woman who got in the wreck could be liable. texting and driving is a huge problem. each day, eight people in the u.s. are killed. 860 injured in crashes involving a distracted driver. no question, it is a huge problem and we have to do something about it. i don't see this one though. if i'm an attorney, i'd love that as a client. you're going to slam the guy who sent the text? you don't know they're driving. >> how do you know where they are when they're receiving it? the only way i know sometimes, my friend has -- and it's

brilliant -- when she is driving, the -- her text messages are disabled. i get a message that says, i'm driving right now. please text me later. >> there's an app for that. >> a lot of bartenders, there were different lawsuits in the past where they were sued for overser serving someone. they'd say, how did i know this man or woman was intoxicated? when i was a reporter in texas, one of the first big lawsuits of its kind was filed after there was a fatal accident. the bartender was sued for allegedly over serving that person. >> there, you have the person in front of you and you can see their behavior. >> but you can't gauge who is over the limit. >> right. >> i mean, that was why the bartender won. you can't prove that. >> there's no way. first of all, if you're driving, put the phone in the glove box or somewhere you can't reach it. this is on the person driving

the vehicle. i'm from florida. a lot of the roads are flat and long. it's really easy to do this. i see people swerving all the time. huge, huge problem. it is the person driving the vehicle, their responsibility. hey, it can wait. i'm only in the car 15, 30 minutes. do you need the information that fast? no, you don't. whatever it is. if you know you're going to be talking to someone urgently, pull over. if not, text them when you get to the destination so you get there safe. no way the person on the other end with the liable. >> it's a reflex to reach for the phones. >> it's social media notifications and all that. no way for your phone not to go off all the time. know that, put it away from you or where you can't get it and just drive. you're in a vehicle that can get you where you need to go, but can also cause harm if you operate it in the wrong way. >> honest conversation. i was in a car and someone answered their phone. >> while driving? >> mm-hmm.
