bay. two deadly crime scenes from los gatos to campbell. it started inside the home of the redwood estates area. >> kris sanchez live with more on how the two seasons are connected. >> reporter: good morning. the road leading to that home where neighbors say they heard gun shots around 11:00 yesterday morning still closed at this hour today. usually quiet neighborhood is back to its quiet self though we do know investigators are still in the neighborhood above us. santa clara sheriff investigators were here at the scene late into the night last night. it appears they are here this morning gathering evidence at the home where a young father was shot dead and two others were injured. investigators headed into the neighborhood here yesterday, another crime scene was developing on highway 17 near

hamilton avenue exit in campbell. officers spotted a prius described as having left the scene. the driver was apprehended. sheriff investigators have not revealed how the two men who died are connected. here is how the two described by a neighbor and sheriff's spokesman. >> nice guy. he had nice kids. he was active in their lives. he played sports with them and stuff. it's sad. >> the driver fled on foot. he was later detained. the passenger was transported to valley medical center where he was later pronounced dead. >> reporter: investigators aren't naming the driver of the prius nor are they calling him a suspect, but we know that he is with the investigators. we are trying to find out more information for you here this morning. kris sanchez, "today in the

bay." >> puzzling for that community. 5:03 on your thursday. case against the undocumented immigrant charged with killing kate steinly could be moving forward today. juan francisco lopez saufrnnche facing second degree murder charges in the shooting death of steinle. he had been previously deported five times. the shooting sparked a debate over san francisco's sanctuary city policy. a live look at the new bay bridge span and a concerning problem that is starting to emerge from the water. transportation leaders plan to meet to discuss the eastern span's iconic to you ir. flooding left suspension rods vulnerable to corrosion. nbc bay area first reported yesterday an additional $10 to $20 million needed to fix that problem but the bridge's bunt is

$90 million in the red. >> it's been a lot of work and a long hard road. everybody had a good sense of this is important to do. >> to improve the strength of the suspension rods, caltrans crews have to remove old grout and replace it with a waterproof seal. that process is expected to take at least two years. steph chuang is following this story closely and will bring us a live report in the next 30 minutes. 5:05. two earthquakes struck the north bay within 45 minutes of each other. 3.5 magnitude quake hit three miles from the geysers. a 2.6 quake hit the area 11:15. firefighters gained control of these flames eastbound i-80. it started as a car fire but the flames jumped to a neighboring

hillside. our shopper was over the scene yesterday afternoon. firefighters stopped the flames from spreading. 20 acres managed to burn but no one was hurt. crews are working through the weekend to fix this sinkhole. they already stabilized the area, but now they need to install a temporary pipe to replace a broken sewer line that dates back to 1875. it was the collapse of that sewer line that caused the sinkhole which opened up tuesday, trapping an suv with a family inside. fortunately, no one was hurt. a down has come up with a temporary solution to get around its sinkhole in moraga. the boulevard is back open and cruise infalled a four-way stop where the sinkhole is. the town is spending more than $3 million for repairs which could last three more months.

patchy fog that started to roll in. we've seen that all week. it's 51 in concord and napa. 54 in oakland and palo alto 56. let's break it down. our temperatures go from 56 to 60 by 9:00 this morning. mostly sunny skies by lunchtime. 66 into the low 70s today as you get ready to head home from work. a look at all the microclimate today. 80s for the south bay and peninsula at 73. we'll have cool temperatures along the coast and still heating up in spots like brentwood up to 76. low 80s for parts of the tri-valley. looking at that seven-day forecast, you see our temperatures will be coming down as we go into the weekend. all because of a stronger onshore flow. we haven't seen much of that as of yet. we will see clouds by tonight into the start of the day tomorrow. we'll do it all over on saturday with nice comfortable weather.

health. the stigma disappearing but people with severe mental illnesses are facing road blocks to critical treatment. a south bay family reached out to the investigative unit after their health plan denied coverage of their daughter's eating disorder treatment. doctors and psychiatrists recommended intensive therapy but the health plan's medical team determined care was, quote, not medically necessary. the family paid more than $100,000 to get their daughter the help they believe she needs. >> besides being hurt and frustrated and angry, i wonder if my daughter had a medical illness would it have been different? >> why are health plans continuing to deny coverage for critical mental health treatment? >> that is a really good question. each plan has its own process for how they determine whether or not they think a service is medically necessary. >> tonight at 11:00, the investigative unit takes the family struggle to the regulator in charge of protecting health care rights. we'll reveal how often the state

sunny in the east bay and 72. i'll talk more about that weekend forecast looking pretty nice, but let's head over to mike to get an update on that crash. >> it's highway 17. there is nothing unexpected at the bay bridge. easy build. no other dramatic changes around most of your bay's commute. santa cruz mountains. northbound 17 around the summit. chp has a report that a deer was hit. they have to take care of that situation. sounds like one lane is blocked by the activity. no slowing shows up on the sensors. looking towards san jose and the rest of the south that has build for the volume. this is the most severe backup just at the 681 interchange. that will clear up over the next ten minutes. >> thank you so much. we move to a developing story in the south bay. two people are dead at two different crime scenes spanning

several miles. this morning investigators are expected to continue looking for clues in the los gatos mountains. santa chara sheriff's deputies spent hours at a home after neighbors heard gun shots. >> they found a man shot to death inside a home on two other people injured. witnesses reported a silver prius leaving the scene. deputies chased down the driver. the driver crashed at the hamilton avenue exit. the passengers in the car was did he claired dead at the hospital. neighbors say they believe the shooting william was the father of a two who moved into the community a year ago. >> nice guy, nice kids. he was active in their lives. he played sports with them and stuff. it's sad. >> investigators aren't revealing who the victims are or what led up to the violence. >> all new this morning, firefighters springing into action to save a person whose car crashed overnight right

outside of their station. this happened a little bit after 1:00 this morning in san jose at the intersection of hillsdale and ross. firefighters from station 9 just returned from another scene when they heard a car roll over multiple times. the driver was trapped in the wreckage. firefighters say it took almost a half hour to remove the person from the vehicle. >> the crew just returned from a call and was getting back and heard another call. >> so far there's been no update on the condition of the driver or what might have led up to that crash. 5:32. an investigation is under way after another shooting on highway 4. this time a pregnant woman is dead. rob redell live in pittsburgh with details on this very latest shooting. investigators think it's connected to the previous one.

>> they do not think that yesterday's shooting on westbound highway 4 was connected to the nearly 20 other shootings that have taken place on east bay freeways and highways. investigators believe in yesterday's instance, the pregnant woman's car was targeted. this happening around 10:45 in the morning. the 25-year-old woman whose family identified as chanique marie was driving with a man heading westbound on highway 4 when someone in a white mercedes opened fire. the man is expected to survive. but chanique marie pregnant with her fifth child died. >> someone on that highway seen something. please come forward. she has four kids. >> we are definitely concerned about the shootings that have

stephanie chuang is live in san francisco with the plans caltrans is expected to unveil. what are we looking at? >> good morning, sam. it's not an easy fix. you can see the eastern span beautiful behind me. the foundation of this 525 foot tower waterlogged during construction letting bay water in creating concern over corrosion. cal strans caltrans discovered this problem in 2014. they drained the rods and then discovered water had gotten in. there is a price tag for the plan, $10 mchlt plus another $1 million to protect the

foundation from corrosion on top of the budget already $90 million in the red. the grout fix would be a milestone fixing the water problem. >> i'm excited about that. that wraps up the construction of the self-anchored suspension bridge. >> the process could take two more years. the engineer says it will mean the rods would be dryer and better in terms of an earthquake. rods were stewing in rain water five years. this afternoon, a three-member bridge oversight committee will make a determination. we'll see what happens then. stephanie chunk, today in the bay. >> thank you very much. 5:37, a world war ii era cannon taken from outside of the

richmond city veterans home. you're looking at surveillance video. thieves managed to drive away with the cannon in a manner of seconds. the community, especially the veterans are disappointed by this step. >> people died for this community. you don't steal from them. that's not right. >> the cannon is made of brass and iron. police suspect thieves are going to melt that cannon down and sell it for cash. a heroic act for a bus driver who helped reunite a missing boy with his family. >> he was honored at the ac transit board meeting in oakland. april 30th he was driving his bus when he saw a boy riding a scooter on the sidewalk. he said the 7-year-old looked too young to be riding along. >> got him in the bus, started talking to him. i realized he was lost and he didn't realize he was lost. >> he says after talking to the

in san jose. >> as we look at the fremont camera we see folks headed to the south bay 880. we see there is not a lot of slowing that builds up. we are seeing that volume starts to build. north bound 280, transition ramp on 880 right there. we are looking at a crash blocking one lane. this may cause more slowing as the commute is just about to build there. i'll track those details closely. bay bridge shows a backup. metering lights are on. almost ten minutes backup forming. lanes to the left are slower. gradual build and no problems. little recovery coming out of the maze. trying to bring unity to the republican party. meeting scheduled to happen in a matter of minutes now on capitol hill between donald trump and gop leaders. could videotaping police officers cause crime? the strange theory from an important person.

maname b.a.r.t. directors are set to vote on ratifying the recent contract extension agreed to by b.a.r.t.'s management and its unions. last month b.a.r.t.'s three major unions agreed to full-year contract extensions. the peaceful negotiations differed from bitter talks in 2014 that led to shutdowns. 5:44. next month voters in san jose will decide whether or not to loosen the rules for medical marijuana clubs. today they have a chance to become more educated about the initiative. measure c grew out of response by leaders to the explosion of pot clubs across the city. the city created strict zoning rules and sparked a backlash. tonight san jose's vice mayor will host a forum to answer questions about measure c's potential impact. this is happening while we speak.

voters in california last night. it's all part of a new weekly phone banking campaign called women's wednesdays. taking place in 34 locations including this one in san francisco. >> they are talking about the issues that matter to them and issues that matter to secretary clinton. issues like equal pay, paid family leave. >> california senator barbara boxer joined in on the campaign via a statewide conference call. one ripple effect is a smaller middle class. that is what a new pew report finds. they are no longer the majority. in about 25% of all u.s. metro areas. since 2000, the pool of middle class residents has shrunk in 9-10 u.s. cities. middle class adults make up about 51% of the population down from 55% previously.

the head of the fbi says people videotaping police officers causes crime. >> james comey, the fbi director says videos make police officers less aggressive and that somehow leads to more crime. >> it's a tough logic to follow. the latest fbi statistics show there has been a jump in violent crime, murder in particular in some american cities. comey has said several times he worries about the so-called ferguson effect. an unproven phenomenon where officers worries about ending up on the internet of a police officer who cuffed a man in a shopping mall for riding a hoverboard while onlookers ask why he's being arrested. comey says that fear of ending up as a viral video makes police officers less aggressive and that might cause violent criminals to get away. even the head of the national police union disagrees, telling "the new york times" this morning, director comey has no proof that is the case. director comey said something

in the sand box. more sunshine and warmer temperatures today. especially inland. as we get a look at san jose, we start out with clouds. no difference today. a nice cool start and we also have those clouds hovering over san francisco as we look at this shot. you see the city line is all lit up. we have clouds that are low in the atmosphere. now it's in the low 50s in san francisco in the east bay and south bay 7:00. as we drop in on the east bay to get a closer look, walnut creek at 49 degrees, dublin 52. walnut creek 50 sunol 53. 50 in the north bay. as we get a look at the hour by hour forecast for san francisco, more clouds. 10:00 we start to see the sun coming out. 11:00 more of an appearance of the sunshine. as we go into the rest of the day, bright beautiful sunshine and temperatures reaching into the low 60s today. more clouds right along the

coast. the forecast shows that the clouds will whoever there throughout most of the day. then it rolls back inland as we go into tomorrow morning and do it all over saturday. morning clouds, afternoon sunshine. that seems to be the trend with no major changes except a stronger onshore flow. temperatures will drop more each day. today one of the warmer days of this week up to 81. down to 74 on saturday. a very nice comfortable weekend ahead in the peninsula as well as san francisco into the mid 60s there. 72 for the tri-valley after hitting 82 today. for cooler temperatures, i'll be talking more about that. >> in san jose we have a major freeway connection closed. this is not a major backup. there is the live look. let's take you to the maps and talk about the rest of your commute. most of your bay area seeing a

==sam/ots== malaysian officials say two more pieces of debris found in the indian ocean are quote "almost certainly" from that m two more pieces of debris found in the indian ocean are almost certainly from that missing passenger jet. the debris was found back in march. one piece is part of an engine. the other is part of an interior panel. so far, search crews found a total of five pieces of debris believed to belong to malaysian airlines flight yies believed i into the indian ocean. an nbc bay area investigation that uncovered the california inhome support services system fails the very people it's supposed to help. >> the team spent a year interviewing recipients and providers digging through data asking how the system got this way. >> good morning, guys. california's department of social services oversees this system of inhome support

services. it was designed to save taxpayer money having approved care delivered by qualified providers in recipient's homes. people in need don't have to be institutionalized. or put in a long-term hospital or nursing home. they then get paid by the state of california to take care of those people where they live. our investigation found the system of antiquated rules, paper time sheets and frustrated participants, often left in limbo with no money and many times no recourse. the state's own data shows hundreds of people working under the ihss system are paid late or not at all. one woman had to supervise and sign official time sheets for her caregivers even though she was heavily medicated and barely conscious at times. a spokesperson for dss would not answer our questions on camera
