i did my homework. all eyes on the building right there. rnc headquarters on capitol hill inside donald trump and house speaker paul ryan are holding their big meeting. the presumptive republican nominee arrived just an hour ago. gave the cameras a wave before he headed inside. we'll talk about that meeting and more with former vice president dan quayle. let's start with peter alexander on the hill for us. good morning. >> good morning. the next several hours will be pivotal for the future of the republican party. we've just learned that meeting behind us between donald trump and paul ryan wrapped up just moments ago. this is quite a scene here. you can see a circus-like atmosphere with protesters. some blowing rams horns, others playing bagpipes and these oppose trump's position on immigration. trump has won nearly 11 million votes but there's one person's support he's yet to secure. one of the most powerful voices

in the republican party. after donald trump's takeover of the republican party, this morning perhaps his toughest audience yet, paul ryan. trump deferential when asked who is the leader of the gop. >> i would say paul ryan. i'd say paul for the time being and maybe for a long time. >> reporter: the meeting hosted by reince priebus, ryan and priebus notably from wisconsin. the last state to reject trump at the voting booths. >> we need a real unification of our party. after a tough primary that's going to take some effort. >> reporter: and perhaps some time. ryan involved in a tense meeting with trump's congressional supporters. sources telling nbc news the longer ryan waits to endorse the more divided the party gets. also on trump's plate a visit with senate republican leaders, not among them, ted cruz. >> there are no plans for us to meet. i have not heard from donald trump. >> reporter: nor has john mccain after calling for trump to take

back this controversial comment. >> he's a war hero because he was captured. i like people that weren't captured. >> reporter: trump acknowledging mccain is a hero but dhfgefendi his words. >> many people like what i said. my poll numbers went up seven points. >> reporter: mitt romney is blasting trump for refusing to release his tax returns until an irs audit is over which may not be until after the election. romney calling it disqualifying, suggesting there's a bombshell in them. trump could become the first major party nominee in 40 years not to make his returns public. >> a tax return you learn very little. >> reporter: he demanded the same transparency of romney four years ago. trump's likely democratic rival hillary clinton looking to capitalize. >> my husband and i have released 33 years of tax returns. so you have to ask yourself, why doesn't he want to release them? yeah, well, we're going to find out.

that group that it would end up with donald trump capturing the republican nomination? >> no. and i don't think very many people did except himself, his family. there's a few people who said watch donald trump, but i don't think anybody expected him to win the nomination. and quite frankly, i'm not sure he really thought he could win, but he's a winner. he knocked off 16 republican candidates. he is going to be the nominee, the presumptive nominee, and now the party is going to have to unify around someone that they did not expect to be their nominee. >> obviously this candidacy of donald trump has exposed some fault lines in the republican party, and there are some people who call themselves never trumpers, and then there are some on the trump train. which category do you fall into? >> look, i was the republican vice president and i've been a republican all my life. i'm going to support the nominee. and i predict that most people in my position or people that have been in the republican party for a long time will rally around the nominee.

i fully expect that paul ryan will eventually support donald trump publicly. i hope that happens because we do have to be unified. if we're not unified, then we have a real lot of trouble. >> let me ask you about qualifications and your qualifications were questioned when you became vice president. people worried whether you had the experience to be vice president or president if that were to happen. do you think donald trump has the experience, the knowledge and the temperament to be president? >> we're going to found out. >> right now do you think, though? >> right now he's the nominee. there's -- not a majority but a plurality in the republican party that clearly believes that. i believe he has the capability to be president of the united states, and he's into a new phase now. he's gotten through the nomination. quite frankly the nomination is a much lower bar than being the nominee. now he's got to show the american people not that he can

beat other republicans but he's got to build on his base, move forward and articulate a vision that the american people say, yes, he is qualified. i don't know what the answer to that is for most of the people but he's got good political instincts, a good business background, he's a winner, and he's unusual. he's obviously very different, he's not going to play by the rules. it's a different situation but i think that he can win. >> is there anything about how he conducted the race so far in terms of tone or temperament that gives you pause or concern or if you had him sitting across from you, you'd say, you know what, maybe not do it that way. >> here's what i think he will do or needs to do. he really needs to get more involved in the policy. he made a speech on foreign policy. he's got to make another speech on foreign policy. he's got to make speeches on the economy. he's got to show that he's presidential. he's not running in a primary anymore.

he's won that. now he has to figure out how to win the general election. >> he spoke out yesterday and sad doesn't expect me to become a different person. he said he has a mandate from his followers to run a fiery, outsiders campaign. doesn't sound like he's going to do what you're suggesting he do. >> he can run that fiery outsiders campaign but he has to realize, and i'm sure he does. he's been around a long time. he thought about being and suggested he should be the vice president back in 1988 when george bush selected me. so he's followed politics and he knows full well it's a different campaign once you're the nominee. i fully expect fiery, yes, unconventional, yes, but it's going to be different. it has to be. it's a different kind of campaign. he's running in the general election probably against hillary clinton, although there's the news story. we know who our nom linee is gog to be before the democrats know

who their nominee is going to be. >> is he as qualified as she is? >> on paper you'd say she's more qualified but he's more qualified in the sense that the american people i think want an outsider. they want an outsider this time. she is not an outsider. if you're looking for an outsider, she's not qualified and he is. >> simple question, should he turn over his tax returns? >> he's not going to do that. >> i know, but should he? every presidential candidate going back decades has done so. >> he's different. it's going to be a different campaign. stay tuned. just remember this, expect the unexpected. >> his vice presidential candidate be? >> rob portman, senator from ohio. a great choice. man of stature, substance. pick him, he'll say that's the way he's going to govern. rob portman. >> you should come back more often. vice president quayle, good to see you. two more pieces of debris recently discovered are almost certainly from malaysia airlines

flight 370 according to australian officials. it disappeared with 239 people on board while en route from kuala lumpur to beijing. the latest fragments were found on the beaches of south africa and mauritius. a total five pieces of debris from mh-370 has been discovered in various places around the indian ocean. an investigation being launched into the violent arrest of a suspect following a high-speed chase through two states. tamron joins us with more on that. >> the chase started in massachusetts and ended in neighboring new hampshire. when the driver finally gave up, officers pounced. dramatic aerial footage captured it all. police officers repeatedly punching a suspect who appeared to be surrendering after a high-speed chase. the man was wanted on multiple warrants, including assault and battery. when officers in massachusetts tried to pull over his pickup truck wednesday afternoon,

police say he refused to stop, igniting a high-speed chase. starting in holden, massachusetts, the chase ended nearly 50 miles in nashua, new hampshire, when two of his tires were blown out. it's what happened after the chase that is raising concern. simone exits the truck and appears to give himself up. as he lies face down on the pavement, officers start throwing punches. simone's sister is furious. >> it was very shocking, to say the least, disturbing to see when someone willingly gets out of the vehicle, goes to their knees, goes flat out on their stomach. it doesn't seem like there was anything apparent in his hands or anything like that. it was shocking. >> reporter: in a statement, the massachusetts state police said, quote, the pursuit like all pursuits that involve massachusetts state police will be reviewed by the department's pursuit committee. they'll also investigate whether the level of force used to

apprehend simone is appropriate. this is another example of cameras changing the dynamic. this is under investigation. we'll continue to follow it. >> not the last we'll hear from it. and now to the latest on the death of music icon prince. a memorial was held for him last night in beverly hills. we're also hearing more about the doctor who treated prince in his final days. stephanie gosk is following the story for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're being told that last night's event was an emotional one. prince's nearest and dearest gathering as privately as a group like that could to pay tribute to his life. law enforcement officials are telling nbc news that the dea was here earlier this week executing a search warrant. they are trying to determine how he obtained prescription painkillers. wednesday night in l.a. stars like gwen stefani, spike lee and others turned out for what was called a celebration of life.

the secret tribute for prince was a private gathering. it comes as we're learning more details about the local doctor who treated prince and came to paisley park with test results hours after the superstar's death. according to a police search warrant, licensed since 1997, dr. michael schulenberg has a clean medical practice record in minnesota. two local health care facilities say the doctor no longer works for them. the north memorial medical center where the doctor told investigators he worked says he no longer is employed there. and an assisted living home said it was surprised to hear prince was schullenberg's patient. at first golden living told nbc news, we've begun the process to replace this physician on our team in light of this development. hours later it revised the statement and said that dr. schullenberg was already being replaced for unreleased reasons. a process that began april 5th,

weeks before prince's death. attempts to reach dr. schullenberg were unsuccessful. the search warrant issues to obtain prince's medical records also reveals one of the pop star's closest associates, kirk johnson, said that he went to a local hospital some time in the last two years and received fluid during his visit. johnson, an occasional drummer in prince's rock brand, worked for the superstarr since the early '90s and helped manage paisley park. johnson was a part-time trainer at this local gym. mult pell employees say he is on leave because he was so close to prince. nbc news has learned that's kirk johnson is now being represented by attorney f. clayton tyler in minneapolis who specializes in criminal defense. tyler declined to comment on the case. a minnesota court is saying the release of the search warrant with details about dr. schullenberg was a mistake. it should have been sealed with

federal officials say that the fire that sparked a deadly explosion at a texas fertilizer plant was intentionally set. it killed 15 people, injured hundreds and leveled nearby homes, businesses and schools. federal investigators announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in that case. take a look at this. a california man lucky to be alive. police say he was street racing when his car flipped and burst into flames. the manager of a nearby store saw the fire, ran in and pulled the unconscious man to safety. >> lucky he did. the cannes film festival under way this morning. this year the glamour of that event is being overshadowed by controversy. woody allen's new movie "open can" and his son is using that opportunity to blast his father, hollywood and the media. nbc's joe fryer is here with more on that. good morning.

>> ronan farrow contributes on "today." the timing was intentional and followed a controversial q&a allen did with the same publication one week ago. >> overnight woody allen on the red carpet at cannes. his new movie opening the glitzy fefts val in france. this morning his son ronan farrow speaking out against his famous father. farrow targets his father and the media. specifically how the media covers sexual assault. allen was accused in 1992 of sexually assaulting farror's sister dylan when she was a little girl. i believe my sister. this is always true as a brother who trusted her and even at 5 years old was bothered by our father's strange behavior around her. climbing into her bed in the middle of the night forcing her to suck his thumb.

he's vehemently denied the allegations since they surfaced years ago. last week before cannes, the hollywood reporter's q&a with allen did not include questions about the allegations. now farrow is slamming that article in his own. to me, it is a sterling example of how not to talk about sexual assault. the old-school media's slow evolution has created a culture of impunity and silence. >> he's not been rejected by the hollywood community and is largely embraced as an artist. it's an annual cannes issue we do. for him to front that issue was not strange or out of character. >> reporter: in 1993 a connecticut prosecutor said probable cause exists to prosecute allen but said together with the child's mother mia farrow he chose not to prosecute because of the risk of future traumatization of the fragile child witness. the controversy also following the stars of allen's films like diane keaton who talked to matt

in 2014 after she accepted a golden globe for lifetime achievement on allen's behalf. >> a lot of people didn't think he deserved the award and shouldn't get it because of accusations. did you have any trepidations? >> no, of course not. you have to look at my life this way. he gave me my opportunity to be here and talk to you. it's all because of woody allen. >> reporter: kristen stewart told "variety" she had a conversation with one of her co-stars about the allegations. if we were persecuted for the amount of expletive that's been said about us that's not true, our lives would be over. farrow writes it hurts my sister every time one of our heroes like louis c.k. or a star her age like miley cyrus works with woody allen. at the cannes film festival wednesday night, reporters say no one asked allen about his son's blistering essay at a news conference. but the audience gasped when the master of ceremonies attempted a joke telling allen you have shot

rain to clear out of the east coast, but we could still see a few spotty showers, especially across northern new england. temperatures will start to drop, especially as we go into sunday with them running about 15 to 25 degrees below average. that's a look at the country. here's a peek out your window. cooler temperatures in the next three days. in the south bay we go from 81 degrees today to 74 degrees on saturday and with this cooling trend it's a much more comfortable weather, but we still keep it dry. peninsula and san francisco will stay in the mid-60s. the north bay will have more of dramatic dip in those temperatures. 79 today and 70 on saturday. the east bay also looking at some upper 60s for the weekend and 70s for the trivalley. and i'm joined now by will schafroz, the president of the national parks foundation, a non-profit partner of the national park service. it is nice to have you. >> it is good to be here. >> as we wrap up this week of national parks, what do you hope

welcome back, everyone. we're wrapping up our design your life series this morning, so after tackling the outside of your home over the last couple of days, now we're sprucing up the inside. abby larson, the creator of style meets pretty living, is here with some inexpensive ideas. abby, it's good to see you. >> you, too. >> inexpensive, they're not going to take a lot of time and they'll make a big difference especially as the warm weather hits. >> they are, and some of these trends are very expensive in the stores. we're doing these same trends for a lot less money, starting with metallic and gold. >> marble and metallic. >> you normally see these with coffee tables and great lamps. we're going to try to make these right here. you need two different supplies, gold leaf paper and marble contact paper. >> you've already done the gold leaf. how hard is that? >> all you need is some adhesive, gold leaf and then you

seal it. >> and it doesn't have to look perfect. >> no, no, messy is fine. now we're going to add our contact paper. if you flip it over, you see we started it for you right here at the end. you're going to lay that right on top of your vase. you kind of hug it next to the gold leaf. here's the tricky part. you want to leave that paper intact on the back, and you're going to take your credit card beside you and we're going to put it to good use. this is just getting all the bubbles out. you're going to rub it as you pull the paper off. that makes sure it gets a nice, even, clean look. as you work your way around, the end result looks like this. >> how long should this take, start to finish? >> no more than an hour. >> do the comparison for me. if i went out and bought this vase in the store, what would it cost versus what we've spent here? >> it's going to start at $100, maybe 200, but the best thing is if you invest in the supplies, the projects are endless. you have that great bar cart, same set of supplies. you can even do a mouse pad right here so you get that trend in a very small way.

>> bringing blooms into a room. >> yeah! flower power is everywhere right now. it's really versatile. you see it on your artwork, you see it on your upholstery. we're making a fun accent pillow. you need stressful fabric. this is perfect. work your way in concentric circles around the pillow. once you have your glue down, you can lay the edge of your fabric right on top so it sits up nice and high, and you just start building your flower out. as you work your way around and around and around, you can go as big as you want, you'll see the end result will look like a big, beautiful flower. >> how much fabric do you need to make something like this? >> you need a couple yards. a twin bed smeet heet is actual perfect amount. >> it will cost us what? >> $30 in the store, about $15.

bit of cream, and the magic ingredients, chocolate and and oreos. we're going to start with a little bit of butter. do you want to add in the chocolate? >> dump the whole thing in? >> dump the whole thing in, unless you want to snag one for yourself. >> i do, and actually, i already have. you don't need a double boiler? >> no, but at this point you can turn off the heat because the heat is going to be enough for the chocolate to melt nicely. >> and you don't want it to burn. >> exactly. while that's doing its thing, we're going to add sugar and eggs. you want to beat that until it doubles in size, like five minutes, six minutes. >> you have the whisk attachment on there. >> exactly, the magic of television. i think we might have one double in size, though. >> that's what that should look like. >> exactly. it should look light and fluffy

and airy. we'll get that while it does its own thing. we have all the eggs here. do you want to do a little figure 8 action in there? >> i don't know that i can. >> you slowly pour it and i'll stir it. you pour, and as you're pouring, i don't want to lose any air that's in that delicious mix, and this is a great thing to get the kids in the kitchen and get them into the mixing a bit. >> by the way, we have our taste testers downstairs. are you guys loving it or what? >> this is amazing. >> this is memorial day weekend right here. >> they're in their happy place. what does the figure 8 thing do? >> it just makes it so you incorporate all the ingredients without knocking all the air out of it. leave a little in there because someone will wl want to lick th bowl. keep the air in there. we have it already sifted. keep the egg in that and lightly

place it on. it's a beautiful, beautiful light batter. there are a couple stages to bake this. it's not hard, there's just a little cook time involved. you're going to spread this into a brownie pan. you want to make sure you have a nice, even layer. and then once you have got that on the pan, you parbake it like 15 minutes in the oven. >> meanwhile -- >> meanwhile -- >> -- in the cheesecake department. >> pop that in with that cream cheese. this is an incredibly versatile cheesecake mix. we're going to use it with ours, but you can make it seasonal, you can switch oreos out with peanut butter cups, or with junior minutts and really make this your own. once you've beaten it, you can add eggs and cream, add a little vanilla, and you'll end up with this creamy mix.

i'll add some oreos with that creamy mix. >> then you put the cheesecake layer on top of the layer we've already baked? >> right on top. >> is there anything better than this? you can see it's nice and delicious and you want to pour it over your cheesecake. this is kind of an anything goes recipe. over it goes, and we spread it out. now, that one needs to bake for like 20 minutes. >> so you're not overbaking because now the brownie layer is getting another baking? >> we're only going to partially bake the brownies. what you end up with is a spongy texture so you have a line of brownie on the bottom and a line of chocolate on top. the brownie mixture is getting a little firm, so you pop it in the microwave for about 20 seconds. do you want to do the honors? >> sure. it doesn't have to be a figure 8, though? >> no. >> guys, would you like to try

the oreos or other candy? >> there's cheesecake, oreos and brownies. >> once you spread that in, you take tons of oreos and tons of candy and it goes back in the oven for 15 minutes and you let it cool, preferably overnight. then slice it into amazingly small pieces. >> and you're in heaven. i'm going for it. you are the best. if you want more of this recipe head to today.com/food. we'll be back with "today" on

we totally crashed. so we went on a lobster boat and went lobstering. we did catch some lobsters and then we also feasted on lobsters and mussels and steamers and corn and biscuits and everything else you can imagine. we also had a chance for some popovers, which are huge here. they've been making these since 1895. this one is a little cold, but you see how there is a little hole in here. the secret is to put butter in a warm popover and shake it up so it melts all around >> we are still seeing clouds in parts of the bay area with breaks from the clouds as we take a look at the north bay. 51 degrees and upper 50s for the rest of us. into the day, mostly sunny skies and 72 in the east bay and also in the peninsula. san francisco will be in the mid 60s while we had 80s for the inland temperatures for the south bay and trivalley. looking at the cooler
