was clear he had the numbers to beat the nominee but ended on a losing streak. for hillary clinton, it is good news they won kentucky. you say, this probably should have been a sanders state. it was a closed primary with no independents. >> more than 30 points in 2008. >> she's certainly on course to hit the number, but probably going to suffer more losses along the way. >> for the talk of need for unity on the republican side, it seems the democrats could use a shot of unity themselves. we hear about what happened in nevada. sanders supporters getting very, very upset with the party apparatus there. how does this end, and is this all leading to a convention that could be contentious? >> when bernie sanders spoke, he was a defiant speaker. he called out the leadership of the democratic party. it raises the question, this happened in nevada at one state convention. do sanders supporters show up in philadelphia this summer? you can think back, go decades

back to '72, '68, chaotic scenes at democratic conventions. do sanders supporters show up at the convention, intent on cau causing trouble? that would be a nightmare for the party. >> i need you to get up and do walking here. when we look at donald trump and the general election, his strategy involves getting white, working class voters in the so-called rust belt. walk us through it. >> if you want to look at a rust belt, upper midwest strategy, basically here is the red-blue map. obama and romney, obama got 332. let's start clinton there. 206 for romney, start trump there. what are the blue states in the midwest, in the rust belt, that trump is targeting? ohio, pennsylvania. they're saying michigan. wisconsin, minnesota, iowa. these are sort of the targets. when you look closer here, it's sort of a mixed bag for trump. start in ohio. we always talk about ohio. this really is a right, natural,

obvious target for donald trump. it's been close every election the last three. there is basically no scenario you get donald trump to the white house where this is not part of the bedrock foundation. he has to flip ohio. that's one thing. it is doable but the numbers we've seen recently. one poll last week had him up there. pennsylvania is interesting. republicans make noise about pennsylvania all the time. they haven't carried it since 1988. in 2008, obama won it by double digits. it came down to five points in 2012. one of the reasons is when you look closely at pennsylvania, in the philly area, strongly democratic. the suburbs there. the rest of the state though is becoming more republican. the trend favors republicans. one of these years, this thing really could flip. that's a natural target for trump. the problem is, when you look at a michigan, a minnesota, when you look at a wisconsin, it's a steeper hill to climb. as trump, look at it this way. if you can take ohio, doable,

224, add in pennsylvania, now 244. now it gets tough. iowa, that's probablytarget. now you're at 250. you'd still need wisconsin plus michigan. more realistically if you're donald trump, this is a real stretch, this is a stretch. this would be doable to get you to 250. then what? >> florida. >> you have to get florida. if you do get florida, 279. now you're open it. florida plus in roads in the rust belt would do it. >> didn't someone once say florida, florida, florida? >> you crushed that board. fantastic. that was great. steve, thank you. >> thanks. also this morning, the tsa is apologizing and sending dozens of additional screeners to chicago's o'hare international airport where hundreds of passengers were stuck in lines over the weekend. what about other airports across the country? tom costello is at o'hare with the latest.

an apology. >> i tell people, i won't apologize for doing our job well, but i do apologize for the people stranded in chicago yesterday. >> reporter: the hours-long lines have gotten members of congress threatening the tsa. illinois senator calling on neffenger to resign. and the homeland security secretary says airlines have to play a role in moving things a i long. >> we asked airlines to possibly consider eliminating the checked baggage fee, to encourage people to check their baggage rather than carry-on. >> reporter: the airlines say they're not cutting baggage fees and believe a better focus is the tsa to have adequate staffing. >> my focus is getting as many people in checkpoint lanes as possible because i expect large travel volume over the summer. >> what we have here are the airlines helping to move people along in tsa lines. a woman in a red coat a moment

they're trying to help funnel people through. savannah, seconds ago, i got this e-mail. the airline industry is projecting a record 231 million people will travel this summer. 2.5 million people a day. that's up from 1.8 million on average last year. this is going to be a very rough summer. back to you. >> let's hope help is on the way in the form of more agents. tom, thank you. speaking of travel, it'll be a rough morning for hundreds of thousands of commuters here in the new york city area after a big track fire brought service to a halt tuesday night. it started underneath the metro north tracks in east harlem. officials say the flames were so intense, they may have blown bolts off of the track. the fire left thousands stranded at grand central terminal and other stations. riders are dealing with delays and crowded conditions this morning, with trains operating with limited service. more than 4 million u.s. workers will now become eligible for overtime pay under new rules

issued today by the obama administration. the annual salary threshold at which companies can deny overtime pay is now going to be doubled from $23,000 a year to more than $47,000. right now, some workers classified as managers work long hours but are barely paid more than the people they supervise. hourly workers would still, in most cases, be guaranteed overtime. want to talk about tense moments in our nation's capital on tuesday. a man drove a truck on to the national mall because he believed he had been exposed to anthrax and wanted to warn other people. the man told authorities he saw a farmer spreading a substance on a field in virginia, so he brought some of the unidentified substance with him to d.c. the man called police and was detained by officers a short time later. a robot was deployed to inspect the truck. the man was tested for anthrax. firefighters determined there was no hazardous material. now a major milestone for the u.s. military.

an openly gay man confirmed by the senate to be the next secretary of the army. willie is here with that story. good morning. >> good morning. eric fanning was first nominated by president obama eight months ago. late last night, the final opposition to his nomination was dropped. >> the ayes do have it. the nomination is confirmed. >> reporter: history on tuesday night when the senate confirmed eric fanning to be secretary of the army. historic because fanning will become the first openly gay civilian leader of any u.s. military service. >> mr. fanning is eminently qualified. eminently qualified to assume that role of secretary in the army. >> reporter: the vote to confirm fanning came after months of delay, held up by republican senator pat roberts from kansas who wanted assurances that prisoners from guantanamo bay would not be sent to his state. after dropping his opposition, roberts had nothing but praise for the nominee. >> he will be a tremendous leader.

as army secretary and will do great by our soldiers at fort leavenworth and fort riley and let me emphasize every soldier serving our nation today. >> reporter: fanning, who held military posts during the obama administration, including acting secretary of the air force, said in a statement, i'm honored by today's senate confirmation and thrilled to return to lead the total army team. the confirmation comes five years after the repeal of don't ask, don't tell, which prevented gays and lesbians in the military from being open about their sexuality. >> i think it demonstrates not only has the military moved on from this issue, but americans are increasingly accepting of their lgbt friends, neighbors, family, colleagues. this is an important step in that direction. >> reporter: it's a milestone also not lost on openly gay talk show host ellen degeneres, who tweeted, congratulations, eric fanning. the first openly gay leader of a u.s. military service. five years, and we're already

running the place. >> yes, this is a historic moment, guys. you saw senator after senator yesterday pointing out that this man is eminently qualified for the position, from liberal democrats to pat roberts, who said he was holding it up because of the guantanamo issue. >> willie, thank you. there is a dramatic rescue i want to show you about. it was caught on camera. this dash cam video from a police car in anchorage, alaska. you can see the suv overturned after an accident. smoke is billowing from under the engine. the officer and bystanders worked together to free the driver. >> up, up, up, out, left, right! >> together, they were able to rock that vehicle and free the man's arm, allowing him to escape. soon after, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. the driver credits that group's teamwork for saving his life.

years later, shapiro appears to have mixed feelings about the verdict. >> there's moral justice, and there's legal justice. when that not guilty verdict was rendered, i felt legal justice was done. as far as moral justice, i haven't discussed it with anyone, including my wife. >> reporter: as for the relationship between the former dream team lawyer and his client, shapiro said simpson never called him when he was arrested for armed robbery in 2007. if he did, he wouldn't have taken the case. >> he still owes me money from the first one. >> when asked if he thought about the fact that he was trying on the glove of a potential murderer during the trial, shapiro said, i didn't consider it but it is kind of an eerie thought. simpson is eligible for parole on the armed robbery sentence next year. we'll see what happens then. >> continues to fascinate, doesn't it? >> it does, doesn't it. >> 20 years later. also this morning, investigators in texas are taking a close look at a house fire that claimed the life of a prominent attorney. could there be a connection to a contentious case he was working on?

nbc's janet shamlian is in dallas with more on this. janet, good morning to you. >> matt, good morning. investigators say the fire that killed a prominent dallas attorney is definitely suspicious. what's not as clear, was it a tragic accident or used to cover up a murder? it may be telling that authorities are now concerned for the safety of a judge who was working on the very same case. >> my name is eric moye. >> reporter: this morning, civil court judge eric moye says he's been told to arm himself after authorities fear he may be a target. authorities are concerned after prominent attorney edwin tobolowsky was found dead in his garage from a fire authorities say was suspicious. >> this was a hit, no question in my mind. this was a hit. >> reporter: friends of tobolowsky are convinced his death was no accident. >> can you imagine a scenario in which this could have happened?

>> it just had to be criminal. it was disguised as a fire to cover a hit. >> reporter: the judge's office in a statement, saying he was made aware of this horrific crime and warned of a possible connection between it and litigation that has been handled by his court. police express concerns related to the safety of judge moye and his court staff. authorities gave moye around the clock protection last weekend, but won't discuss security in place now. >> everybody is close. >> reporter: as for tobolowsky's family, they're waiting to learn, was this an accident or something else? >> i can't speak in terms of the investigation except for he was a lawyer who loved the law. i know he would want justice, whatever justice is. >> reporter: the attorney was a father to three grown sons. a big wedding celebration planned for one of them in just a few weeks. >> there's so many things that we know are going to make us feel better.

genetically modified foods are safe for consumers, posing no additional risk to health or to the environment when compared to traditional crops. this after analyzing 20 years of data. >> if there was a real effect, increase in cancer rates or causing some kind of acute problem, it would have been found in the data. >> reporter: more than 90% of corn, soybeans and cotton grown in the u.s. is genetically modified. usually to make the crops resistant to herbicides or to deter harmful insects. these foods then make their way to almost every aisle of grocery store, from cereal to canned soups. critics long expressed the need for labeling. >> no more gmos. >> reporter: tuesday's report does little to cultivate a change of heart. >> people want to know everything aut their food. they want to know what's in it, where it was grown, how it was grown and who made it. the demand for greater gmo transparency is part of this larger trend.

>> reporter: the report found no significant difference in obesity, cancer or disease in regions where gmos have been widely consumed. compared to areas where they haven't. as evidence mounts in favor of the gmos, it's up to the consumer to decide what goes from farm to table. for "today", morgan radford, nbc news. >> dr. mehmet oz is with us now. he's host of the "dr. oz" show. over the years, you've been outspoken about this. you've been in favor of labeling. you've now read this report. it's extensive. does it change your mind at all? >> it validates what we've been saying. i think they put all the facts together in one place. in america we fight so much about stuff because we don't have the right facts. and this study helps us understand what the real facts are. >> the headlines. genetically engineered crops are safe for humans and animals to eat and have not caused increases in cancer, obesity, gastrointestinal illnesses, kidney disease, autism or allergies. there doesn't seem to be a gray

area in that. >> they were thoughtful about what they said. like most scientists, looking at the data on genetically modified foods, i said this on the show many times, they seem like they're pretty safe. they do acknowledge there are subtle elements, whenever a new food is introduced, that some people might suffer. they're willing to acknowledge though we think it's safe in general, we have to keep studying it. >> they go further and say the fact that previous ge crops haven't caused health or environmental problems doesn't mean all perspective ge plants should be presumed to be benign. >> big, big breakthrough. this basically says, we need to let people decide for themselves. listen, matt, what we're talking about is not genetically modified foods, where i think people are in agreement that they're okay. what does it do to the environment that me as a consumer, what shi should i buy

for my family? >> even with this information, let's say people would like to avoid genetically modified foods. how do they do that? >> buy organic. there's non-gmo project verified labels. organic is the best way to go. the breakthrough idea is the academies are acknowledging they value the mandatory food labeling. not because of the safety of the gmo foods, but they allow pesticides into the environment. other factors that might make you as a consumer uneasy about that. >> i read the report as saying the people behind it don't feel it's necessary labeling, but it's fine if it makes people more comfortable. is that right? >> that's absolutely right. it's a fair way of saying it. as a scientist or food manufacture, you may not feel you need to identify it. but if people in their own homes say, for whatever reason, because of effects on the environment, whatever reason, why not let me have a choice? it's the america thing to do, give me the choice. when they acknowledge because of that, not because of the science, we should allow mandatory food labeling. that's the breakthrough.

dance contest. we started shooting and i was like, what do i do? have a dance contest. >> i had a choreographer buddy of mine come out, and we spent an hour. he worked on "magic mike," so we did a terrible, poor man's impression of "magic mike" moves. >> you sold it and pulled it off, for sure. >> barely. >> the first "neighbors" was a huge success. comedy sequels. there can be good ones and bad ones. were you intimidated, seth? i mean, i know you wanted to make it great. by the way, success. i watched it last night, and it's hilarious. >> thank you. yeah, it was -- the answer is yes. we put a lot of thought into it. we wanted to make sure that we -- we really personally related to it a lot. as silly as it is, we put a lot of what we were experiencing as the producers and the writers and the actors into the movie. so we didn't want to make a movie that we didn't relate to. we had to come up with entirely

new emotional stories for the characters that really spoke to things that we had experienced or were experiencing, that weren't in the first one. things like quarter life crisises acrisis and reinventing yourself as you finish your teenage years. then starting to fear you'll never be able to communicate with young people again. something i'm currently experiencing this second. all those ideas were exciting to us. >> i love there is a message of female empowerment. sorority rising sounds like a horror movie. >> exactly. >> yes. >> it was to re-examine some of the ideas from the first movie, from the female perspective. we show a lot of frat parties and stuff like that, a lot of girls at the parties that are being objectified. he liked that part of it. it was fun to kind of relook at some of the same ideas, just from a female perspective. >> it was also really funny to watch them as the writers try and figure out the girl stuff.

we're back with "today" food. this week, we're cooking with some of the hottest social media stars on the culinary scene, like kevin curry. he's the founder of the blog fit men cook. he has more than 1 million instagram followers. kevin, great to have you here. >> thank you for having me. >> you're making one of my favorite dishes. i'm a lasagna fanatic. you're lightening it up. >> we are. getting ready for the summer. >> what do we have? >> marinara, italian seasoning, low-fat ricotta cheese, eggs, base i basil, lean ground beef. >> where's the pasta? >> sweet potatoes for pasta. >> convince me. >> we're going to cook this up. this is lean ground beef. if you want to use lean turkey, you can, as well. you can also use bison, which is

lean and high in protein. it's also high in iron, so it's great for women. >> all right. that's going to take a couple minutes to cook up, right? >> you can drain off the excess fat. >> important for this recipe. you want to get the fat out. >> shouldn't be too much fat because it's lean beef. cook up garlic for five minutes in the pan. then we are going to -- let's crank this a bit. we're going to add in marinara. we're going to keep this simple with the seasoning. we're going to put in basil and some italian seasoning. a little sea salt and pepper. sprinkle that in. then we're going to add in -- thank you, matt. >> sure. >> then we're going to add in our lean beef there. >> perfect. >> give it a good stir. cook this together for five or six minutes. then our sauce is, voila, finished. >> let's move on and start to build the lasagna. >> yeah. >> here's the sweet potato you showed us. it's raw?

>> it's raw sweet potato. it's good because it's gluten free. it's lower carb. also, it's a good complex carbohydrate to add into your diet. what we're going to do is -- >> be careful at home when you're using this thing. you have to be careful. >> this is not kid friendly. if you don't have one, use a sharp knife. cut this about the width of a nickel. simple to do. last thing we'll do is mix in an egg white to the low-fat ricotta cheese. if you don't like this, use cottage cheese. >> i'll accelerate the process. here'sricotta. how do you layer? >> add in the meat sauce. once i add this, i want you to layer in the cheese sauce. >> all right. >> lather it on there. >> spread that out. >> yes, sir. >> another layer of the potatoes. low-fat mozzarella. >> we're going to cover this up and bake this in the oven for 50 minutes. >> guys, how does it taste?
