are following from overseas. the french president confirms and egyptair flight carrying 56 people crashed. it's too early to know why. the flight was traveling from paris to cairo when it disappeared from radar over the mediterranean sea. we are seeing the plane made sudden swerves. >> it was behaving erratically as it was coming down. we can confirm that the u.s. navy is sending a pt aircraft to help in a search and rescue operation at this point. the u.s. not saying they believe it is a crash just they are going to help. the french president confirmed that the egyptair jet crashed after disappearing, but that it is too soon to speculate why. that is at odds with what the egyptian civil aviation minister is saying this morning.

at his press conference that ended a few moments ago, he was refusing to call the disappearance of egyptair flight 804 a crash, but not ruling out a terror attack. here is a look at flight tracker of that flight. the airbus made a 90 degree turn to the left and full 360 as it drops from a cruising altitude of 37,000 feet to 1,500 feet. you can imagine how the families are feeling this morning. there were 66 people onboard that plane. 56 are passengers. three of them are marshals we are told is routine on a plane of this size. one child, two babies, all of these folks from 12 different nations. none appears to be american at this point. the greek civil aviation authority banned flights 44 miles around the last point of contact with flight 804. they are searching by air and in

the water about 170 miles off the egyptian coast. security analysts say that the current indications are leaning towards someç abrupt incident opposed to some gradual malfunction as that plane, airbus 320, is a safe aircraft. one of the safest in the world. everything is on the table, including the possibility this may have been a terror attack. we'll continue monitoring this for you here. you can find this on our social media platform. kris sanchez, today in the bay. >> thank you, kris. she'll join us in our next half hour. kris is posting updates on twitter. you can follow her @kris nbc.

the bomber aborted take-off but all seven people were able to get out safely and unhurt. check out this bmw in the garage of a santa rosa home. it looks like it belongs there. that's not the story. the driver was traveling 100 miles per hour through city streets, losing control at franklin avenue and wright street. the car went through the yard of a home and kept going into the yard of another home. it was a close call for a man inside that garage. >> i see the wall coming to me. i'm thinking it's an airplane or something. then i see the car and it smells like gas or something burning. really i was scared. >> no one was hurt. the crash is under investigation. >> on a crash course with a

corps. a man in a shootout with antioch police will be arraigned later today. 25-year-old serrano is facing charges for shooting an officer in the head earlier this month. that officer was not seriously hurt. serrano allegedly attacked several police officers who were responding after serrano crashed a reported stolen vehicle in pittsburgh. >> first put on leave and no longer on the force. that is the latest fallout from the sexual misconduct scandal. opd confirmed two of the four police officers have resigned. investigators are not releasing the officers' names or details about the allegations. sources told nbc bay area multiple officers had sex with a minor last year. later today, california law makers will consider sweeping new changes to limit the sale of guns in the state. senators are set to vote on several gun control bills. one would outlaw sale of certain

assault rifles. they are trying to stave off a november ballot measure being pushed by lieutenant governor gavin newsom. that would push tighter restrictions. bernie sanders making his rounds in the bay area. his campaign started in the south bay, ended in vallejo with a surprise stop in san francisco. each stop drew an excited crowd of supporters. hundreds of people showed up to support sanders who says he stands for the working people of this country. >> working families of this country should not be subsidizing the wealthiest families in this country. >> despite trailing in the delegate count, sanders told us that he believes he can still be the democratic nominee. he plans to continue his campaign here in california. very serious allegations this morning. the gop presumptive nominee

donald trump is accusing former president bill clinton of rape. trump making those comments during a fox interview. >> it's about exposure and another case about groping and fondling and touching against a woman's will. >> and rape. >> the woman in question juanita broderick initially said there was no assault, then she recanted. bill clinton denied it and was never charged. hillary clinton campaign spokesperson says trump is feeling attacked and licking his wounds. >> trump is making local headlines. he took a swipe at oakland and the mayor sounding off. in an interview with the "new york times," trump called oakland one of the most dangerous places in the world. the mayor responded by saying there is another place much worse. she wrote on twitter, "the most dangerous place in america is donald trump's mouth." the crime rate in oakland is

it is one of the worse stock market implosions in stock market history. a special treat this morning. the pets.com puppet. you remember the dot-com bubble. $1.3 trillion loss. apple's value loss since february is 20% of that. is it a fair comparison? probably not but i'm trying to give you a sense of scale. microsoft would sell its low cost phone division to a chinese company effectively ending its lumina phone lines. microsoft got it into the phone business by buying nokia for $7 billion. it is slowly exiting the phone business.

the blood testing company theranos sent notifications to doctors that blood tests run on the edison blood testing machines are invalid. this recall covers two years worth of tests. doctors depended on those tests. theranos issued a statement to the "wall street journal" that read in part, "excellence in quality and patient safety is our top priority." i think it would be very hard to find anybody outside theranos who agrees with that statement. the governor told theranos to stop using those machines. we are expecting a report soon. the ceo elizabeth holmes may be banned from entering her own labs. we'll continue to watch this. two years worth of blood tests on their super secret marvelous machine have been declared invalid. >> what a complete turnaround for a company that once had high hopes. >> i mentioned pets.com and you

widespread 70s across the bay area. looking at the next several days, it will actually be cooler than average today. we should be at 76 today. high 75. then check out tomorrow as well as saturday. upper 60s to low 70s. we stay there into the start of next week. as high pressure moves away, we'll have an approaching low pressure system. widespread 70s for inland areas. then 60s tomorrow. it will continue to cool off heading into the weekend thanks to this low, bringing us scattered showers starting in the north bay late tomorrow afternoon into the evening. the rest of the bay area will see scattered rain saturday with below normal temperatures. we could see rain popping up here and there hard to give you timing and exact placement. this will be scattered rain. the rainfall totals will vary. anywhere from barely measuring

so far 169 students at gunn high in palo alto have been told they have to retake either the biology or calculus exam because of mistakes made by the people at school who administered these tests. the school sat some students too close together without giving them different versions of the exam. the college board which creates the exams realized the error when the school submitted the seating chart. this is for the exam administered earlier this month. the students took the same version of the test which violates college board rules. board found the same mistake was for other exams that will need to be taken. board is looking into six other tests. the school district says gunn high had been using a similar protocol and seating arrangement for years. for the students, however, the thought of having to retake an exam they spent so many hours studying for is stressful, i

the sale of assault weapons with bullet buttons. >> good morning to you both. the bullet buttons are part of a loophole that allow shooters to use guns that have this sort of rapid replacement of high capacity ammunition magazines used by the two terrorists who shot and killed 14 people in san bernardino last december. under the ban here in california, most rifles have to require tools that attach the magazine. the bullet button allows the shooter to replace the magazine quickly. people who own these guns would be required to register with the state as assault rifles. there was an attempt back in 20 13 to ban bullet buttons. governor brown vetoed it. and they warned limiting access to firearms criminalizes

law-abiding people. also ten other gun control bills that include background checks for anyone buying ammo, a ban on magazines holding more than ten rounds, regulations for homemade firearms, a ban on loaning firearms to friends and mandate reporting lost or stolen guns. there is a concurrent debate who should decide on these gun control measures. lot governor gavin newsom pushed his safety for all act 2016 to put the same issues in front of voters in december. law makers are concerned this would push more conservative voters out in november. they asked lieutenant governor gavin newsom to hold off on his initiative but he has declined. live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, today in the bay. it is 6:34. renewed push to find a missing toddler. it's been over a month since the young girl's mother was found dead in san francisco. the family is not giving up hope.

>> we absolutely are optimistic that she is alive and well. >> the aunt of arianna joined san francisco police saying a $10,000 reward is being offered for information in the disappearance of the 2-year-old. people are focusing on the people caring for the girl the day her mother disappeared. police say they initially gave conflicting statements and are refusing to cooperate further. >> case surrounding a missing millbrae father turned into a homicide investigation. keith green, a father of two disappeared last month leaving his car and wallet at his house. his control phone was in golden gate park the next day. deputies found his body in a field off highway 101. detectives are not saying how he was killed. >> it is determined as a homicide by evidence found at the scene. i can't go into further detail. >> investigators say green's body was identified through

california is now trying to change the face of history - at least when it comes to the textbooks. california right now trying to change the face of history, at least when it comes to our text books. state education panel is going to meet today to consider changes amidst changing demographics in california. 2/3 of students are now either latino or asian. critics say most school curriculums don't account for that diversity. the goal is to create a new framework for history and social studies classes. >> a new federal grant should clear the way to keep california's high-speed rail program on track. they signed an updated grant agreement in california.

he acknowledged ed amazon off toch his top of his speech. thousands braved the i am theater for the first day of the conference. tesla will sell more stock what we call a secondary offering in order to raise money for its new model 3. we said several times in the past, tesla did not have the funds to ramp up production. it would have to offer more stock. investors say the secondary offerings. it dlurts the existing stock. if i sell you a slice of pizza for $2 and you and i understand by a slice i mean we are going to cut that pizza up into six slices and you get one but i keep cutting that into smaller slices, you are not going to get much pizza. you will be mad you paid $2 for your tiny slice. that is what happens when you offer more stock. this is not the first time tesla

that was yesterday. >> things change. this weekend you'll need a whole different wardrobe while we are dealing with all these changes in the bay area just within a few days. here is a live look at the golden gate bridge getting the day started with a beautiful sun rides and nice way to start out the end of the week. we are heading into thursday now. it's 56 in the east bay and 54 in san francisco. the peninsula at 57. let's drop in on the north bay now. 49 in santa rosa. we have low 50s in novato and san rafael. vallejo at 57. a look at all the microclimates. highs dropping back to the 60s and 70s. yesterday we had widespread 90s. it will not be that hot. our temperatures will be cooler for the weekend. even cooler than this. there will be a couple of spots hitting low 80s like fairfield and concord at 76.

it's all thanks to this, this area of low pressure approaching from the west. that brings in stronger onshore flow and a few more scattered showers, especially for the north bay starting late tomorrow evening. the rest of the bay area may not see that rain until saturday afternoon. the times rain will be hit or miss, below average temperatures as well. breezy winds and it wraps up late saturday night. during that time once again, the rainfall totals will be hit or miss. looking in some spots, barely measuring anything. other areas could get 1/4 to over 1/2 inch of rain. something we'll be watching. that same system brings snow to the sierra looking how much snow we could see between saturday and sunday. four inches in homewood. ten inches at bear valley. very late season snowfalls for the sierra. our temperatures will be staying below average. only in the mid 60s to low 70s

==laura/boxes== let's get right to today in the welcome back. here are the top stories. >> breaking news overseas. let's get to kris sanchez and an update on the passenger plane that crashed in the mediterranean sea. >> greek officials said they found what appeared to be debris floating in the mediterranean sea. those items spotted about 230 nautical miles from the island of crete. the plane made a swift 90 degree turn then a full 360 as it dropped from a cruising altitude of 37,000 feet to 15,000 feet. there were 66 people onboard from 12 nations, none is american. a u.s. navy p-3 did deploy to that area to help in that search. terrorism has not been ruled out. terror is considered a stronger possibility than mechanical failure, according to the egyptian defense ministry. that statement coming out in the
