>> we have a local news update in a half hour. good morning. breaking news. officials confirming to nbc news that possible debris has been found from a passenger plane that crashed over the mediterranean sea. 66 people on board egyptair flight 804 flying from paris to cairo when it aprently made several abrupt turns, dropped thousands of feet and suddenly disappeared from radar. and the question everyone is asking this morning, has terror struck yet again today, thursday, may 19th, 2016. from nbc news, this is a special edition of "today," the disappearance of flight ms-804 with matt lauer and savannah

guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, everybody. it's 7:00 a.m. on the west coast. we're waking up to terrible news. a passenger plane crashed and there's fears it could be terrorists. >> there is more we don't know than we do know. here is what we do know. this was a relatively new plane. an airbus a320 about seven or eight years old or delivered to egyptair about seven or eight years ago. both the pilot and co-pilot have thousands of hours of experience. the plane disappearing about 30 minutes before it was scheduled to land in cairo. most of the 66 people on board were egyptian, although passengers from many other countries were on the manifest. at this time we don't think there were any americans on that plane. >> debris believed to be from that plane has just been found within the last hour. we've got complete coverage. we'll start with keir simmons. he is at charles de gaulle airport outside paris. that's where the flight

originated late last night. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. the relatives of many on board hearing that news that perhaps debris has been found. this flight was traveling through greek air space. it had just left greek air space and the greek defense minister saying that the plane made some dramatic shifts, that it fell very fast and at one point turned 360 degrees in the air. what we don't know yet is why. family members of passengers have been gathering at charles de gaulle airport and at the crisis center in cairo hoping for the best, fearing the worst. a frantic search for the plane is under way in the southern mediterranean. greek authorities now reporting that debris has been found near the island of karpathos. egyptair 804 took off from paris at 5:09 last night heading to

cairo when it went missing. suddenly lost from radar at 8:45, near the border of greek and egyptian air space. it was to have arrived in cairo at 9:15 p.m. the airbus 320 flying at nearly 37,000 feet when it went missing. on board, 56 passengers, including one child and two infants. in addition, three egyptair security personnel and seven cabin crew. airbus issued a statement confirming the loss of the flight and stating our concerns go to all those affected. passengers, mostly egyptian and french, along with ten other nationalities. no americans were on board. egyptian aviation security has been under scrutiny since the metrojet passenger plane crashed after taking off from the sharm el sheikh airport in october in what isis claimed responsibility for downing that plane, the official investigation has not yet confirmed it was a bomb on board. today, six months and seven days since the paris terror attacks,

what happens to a plane that took off from the french capital this morning is a mystery. and u.s. defense officials telling nbc news when the plane disappeared, there was no sign on u.s. satellite pictures of any kind of explosion, unlike in the case of the metrojet flight over egypt or in the case of the mh-17 flight over ukraine. still, though, one egyptian official, matt and savannah, saying that they believe that the probability of a terror attack is higher than a technical fault. >> these are early hours in that investigation. keir simmons, thank you. let's bring in tom costello. he covers aviation for nbc news. he's been tracking the visitigation all morning. tom, as we get to you, before we get to terrorism, let's cover our steps in that direction. first, when there's a crash, we always talk about the plane, the crew and the weather. when it comes to the plane, this is a very safe aircraft. >> very safe. a320, one of the safest planes

out there. it's a workhorse and compooeete with the boeing 737. there are more than 6,000 in use and the safety and track record are exceptional. as for the weather, clear skies over the mediterranean at that hour. really no concerns at all as it relates to weather. >> and the crew, this was a very experienced crew. >> yeah, that's right. we had 6,700 flight hours for the pilot. about 2,700 for the first officer. those are very respectable numbers. that then leads you to, okay, if something catastrophic happened in flight, what could that have been? they were at 37,000 feet traveling at 519 miles per hour. that's cruising altitude, cruising speed. the talk is that something came up -- the plane came apart at altitude. that normally doesn't just happen. if it happens, it has never before happened to an airbus a320. it's extremely rare it would happen. you have to look at what kind of catastrophic fuselage crack or mechanical error could have

occurred or an explosive device, similar to what happen with metrojet over the sinai back in october. did an explosive device bring down this plane? at the moment, those are the leading theories. >> tom costello, thank you very much. let's turn to greg feith, a former investigator with the ntsb. good morning. and let's talk about what we've heard so far from, in this case, a greek defense minister who describes kind of an abrupt turn by this plane and then a rapid descent. what do you make of a report like that? >> well, good morning, savannah. one of the key issues here is caution. while the defense -- the greek defense minister provided that information, we don't know what context it's in. we don't actually know what that information looks like. of course, the defense radar, if this is where they're getting that information, it has more fidelity than the civilian radar. if the airplane did turn, then that tells us that the aircraft

was out of control and probably rendered incapacitated so the pilots could not regain control. but why that airplane was incapacitated, whether it was due to a mechanical issue with the airplane or an explosive device, that's yet to be determined. >> we have to talk, there is an advantage to investigators here. and it's this part of the world, when you're talking about southern european, into the mediterranean, into the middle east and even northern africa, there is intense radar scrutiny of that area. >> absolutely, matt. the big thing here is you can actually put together a mosaic of the flight path and what one radar may not see, another radar will. of course, with defense radar, having a little better fidelity and being in that geographic area, they may be able to put together a very good picture of what was -- what this airplane was doing moments before the loss of control if that's what it was, and then the

destruction, if, again, that's what it was. an in-flight breakup. they could put together a lot of information and, of course, we have satellite information. so while they don't see an explosion, that doesn't mean it didn't happen because you could have an internal fault in the aircraft that may not have been seen on a satellite. >> and related to that issue, this is such a heavily trafficked area, in particular by military vessels, navy vessels already there. we've reported some debris has been found. just a few more hours of daylight. are these tremendously deep waters? is there hope at this point that that black box, the cockpit voice recorder, that they could be recovered? >> we're not talking 22,000 feet like mh-370 in the indian ocean. you're talking 1,000 to 3,000 feet. the airplane is recoverable. the black boxes will definitely be recoverable. we were able to do that with air france 447 because that wreckage and those boxes were at about 13,000 feet.

so in relative terms, this is shallow. once they find that main debris field and then they'll have to map it to see where the big pieces of the aircraft are. if this is spread out over a large area, it could take a long time. >> greg feith, former ntsb investigator. always good to have you information. christopher dickey is an nbc analyst. we don't want to jump to conclusions here, but if we're even going to investigate the idea this might have been terrorism, we need to look at the two cities on the flight plan. paris and cairo. talk about the significance. >> look, paris and cairo would be at the top of the list for isis, for al qaeda, for any number of jihadist organizations, domestic terrorists. they are very high on the list. france is fighting jihadists all over the world, all over africa and the middle east. cairo has been the secene of a

huge crackdown from the muslim brotherhood. there's an insurgency raging in the sinai peninsula. all kinds of things going on. for isis or al qaeda or any of these groups to hit a plane that is flying from paris to cairo, it's a two for and almost irresistible if they can figure out how to do it. >> this was the last leg of this plane's journey over the course of a day. had made several other stops in developing countries. that expands the trail for investigators. >> it does. it does. we can go back to pan-am 103 where the bomb was put on in one airport and the plane stopped in london n then took off from london and blew up over scotland. these things can happen. every time these things happen we say, we've taken the measures, it's not going to happen again. but something does happen again and we find out about it. >> and they'll be looking at every person who came in contact with that aircraft over the course of the day before, ground personnel, crew members, and then they'll look at that passenger list as well. >> absolutely. it's going to be, in a sense, it's harder for the terrorists

to be a passenger than to be a member of the crew. while there is surveillance, there is efforts to undercover efforts to discover anybody in the airport or in the airplane who may be a problem, look, charles de gaulle airport. 86,000 employees. badges to move around that airport. doesn't mean there are no security precautions taken about them. there are a lot. . but how your going to keep track of 86,000 people. >> there's some precedent here. the mess trojet blowing up last year. isis claiming responsibility and it's believed a bomb brought that plane down. >> definitely believed that a bomb brought that plane down, but also the possibility of pilot suicide. we saw it with a german pilot last year. we saw -- american investigators think we saw it in 1999 with an egyptair flight. lots of possibilities, all of them very bad possibilities. >> christopher dickey of the daily beast. always good to see you. >> as we mentioned, there were no americans on this flight.

we know the president has been briefed on this situation all morning. nbc's ron allen is at the white house for us. good morning. what can you tell us? >> reporter: no americans. the plane was not on its way to or from america but obviously a lot of concern from the obama administration because of the possibility of terrorism. while there's a lot of talk about that, there's no firm indication that's what happened. the president has been briefed by his homeland security and counterterrorism chief, lisa monaco. also about a week or so back from another trip to belgium to maintain the pressure on the european allies to continue to cooperate on the intelligence front. this is one of the main concerns the united states has about our allies in europe sharing intelligence about matters like airport security, about the movement of foreign fighters back and forth from the isis battlefield to europe. so, obviously, that's one big concern. the united states has been

stepping up its efforts against isis in recent weeks and months and isis has been lashing out. there's been a series of bombings in baghdad that have been horrific and deadly. all of that happening at the same time this is happening. but no direct connection to terrorism. we've heard from defense officials, for example, that there is no intelligence or no satellite imagery that suggests the plane was targeted. we've also heard from intelligence officials there's, quote, no finite or specific chatter out there amongst jihadists or in the world about the possibility or the run-up to an attack on aviation. we also know the united states is sending assets, military assets to help in the search and rescue operation. there's a p-3 surveillance aircraft dispatched from a u.s. naval base in sicily, italy. that's about 20 or 25 minutes from helping out in the rescue operations. and the president, we know, has said he wants to be briefed throughout the day and the united states will continue to assist in any way that it can.

the next briefing here is in a couple of hours or so. we hope to have more then. matt, savannah, back to you. >> ron allen for us at the white house, thank you. this crash the latest in a string of incidents that have put egyptair and security officials in egypt as a whole under scrutiny. kelly cobiella joins us with that part of the story. good morning to you. >> matt, the egyptian civil aviation minister not even wanting to admit that this is a crash. insisting on calling this plane missing until debris is officially found. there was a hijacking back in march of an egypt airplane. the crash of that metrojet plane over the sinai back in aucts of last year and now this, over the mediterranean. this morning as the search for egyptair flight 804 intensifies, the disappearance of the aircraft with 66 people on board marks the latest in a string of

recent fatal and nonfatal incidents surrounding egyptian aviation security. just two months ooh an egyptair flight from alzand ria to cairo was hijacked making an emergency landing in cyprus. the hijacker thought to be armed with an explosive belt. that belt turned out to be fake. while everyone on board escaped unharmed, egyptian officials were left scrambling to explain their security policies. in october 2015, an airbus 321 was likely brought down by a bomb killing 224 people. that plane operated by metrojet lost contact with air traffic control just 23 minutes after departing sharm el sheikh enroute to st. petersburg, russia. isis claimed responsibility, releasing video showing crude homemade explosives made from a soda can. investigators say it was smuggled on board.

egyptian civil aviation officials insist there was no evidence of terrorist action. >> we shouldn't rule that out. the hints we're getting from french and egyptian security officials are that they are certainly considering it. >> reporter: the incident parking several countries, including russia and britain to suspend flights to sharm el sheikh, a popular red sea resort, hurting egypt's already ailing tourism industry. a critical source of income. and now the disappearance of egyptair flight 804, sure to impact the airline and the country yet again. both egyptian and french prosecutors have opened investigations into this latest incident. the egyptian civil aviation minister when pressed finally conceded le this morning, matt and savannah, that terrorism was most likely the cause than, say, a technical fault. >> kelly cobiella, thank you. let's recap the plane went down 66 people on board. 30 minutes before it was

we're back now 7:30 out on the west coast on this thursday morning. we're learning a little more about the crash of egyptair flight 804. that plane took off from paris heading to cairo. >> the plane was carrying 66 people. it suddenly disappeared from radar over the mediterranean sea. a massive search immediately launch. greek officials tell nbc news this morning what could be the first debris has been located south of the greek island of karpathos. let's get more now. we'll go back to keir simmons at charles de gaulle airport. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. that debris found 130 nautical miles from the island of karpathos according to greek officials. one on greek television

suggesting it may look as if it is part of an aircraft. whether it is the aircraft that disappeared after it flew from charles de gaulle airport here, of course, that's will take them more time to establish. but relatives who are here at this hotel, relatives of those on board waiting for news have been updated. we've been watching. french officials arriving and telling them what they are finding out. they'll be keen to ensure those relatives hear first before any of us exactly what they are discovering there in the mediterranean. another greek official, the greek defense minister saying that the plane made a series of very dramatic shifts shortly before it disappeared. that it dropped very quickly and at one point turned 360 degrees. an egyptian official saying on the other hand that they believe this is more likely to be terrorism than a technical fault. guys? >> but we do not know that. we'll still wait to get more information.

keir, thank you. nbc's tom costello covers aviation. he's been on the phone all night. what can you add? >> the challenge is now going to be finding all the wreckage. and we have a very interesting map to show you. this is radar imagery from the marine vessels out in the mediterranean converging on the search area, on that area where they believed earlier this morning that, in fact, this plane had gone down. you'll see numerous ships kind of moving towards that primary search zone. the challenge now is going to be to actually listen for and then pick up the pingers, those underwater devices that are emitting sounds that hopefully would lead the search teams to the black boxes. the pinger is attached to the flight data recorder. and it is good for 30 days, a 30-day battery, and also good down to 20,000 feet. it should be operating normally in that space, and the sooner they can get those black boxes, the sooner they'll have clues to what happened to this plane.

the news was not good. snow pack only 86% of normal. san francisco with a little more rain than normal but los angeles ended up with a deficit. so we're going to go with a "c" for that as far as the el nino report card. the rest of the country, we'll look for more strong storms down through southern texas. wet weather making its way into the mid-mississippi river valley. more showers and storms through the southeast. gorgeous day in the northeast. looking for great weather. we're looking for windy conditions down through the southwest. in fact, more fog continuing we are seeing a lot of sunshine across the bay area and much cooler temperatures. it will be very comfortable today. gilroy, expect a high of 73 and 69 in burlingame. mission district at 65. low 70s in parts of the north bay. a couple of spots hitting low 80s like fairfield. 71 and we'll have 76 in dublin. looking forward to rn in the forecast.

it is prolonging survival which is huge. that has vastly changed the outlook for patients who are diagnosed with advanced melanoma which is challenging to treat. if we think about the stats from this study, prior to 2011 the median survival was 11 months. what they found in this study was the median survival increased to 24 months and patients were still alive after three years. which are really astonishing numbers. the take home here for people is rather than thinking about cancer or advanced melanoma as that dreaded death sentence, hate to use that word, but rather researchers are saying can we swich our thinking about this that it's perhaps a chronic disease and that people can actually have a good quality of life and extend their survival which is what the study showed. >> and this uses immunotherapy. so it's different. >> and overall and generally it's considered to be much

sturgis gets out of prison, and we decide to follow that dream of opening a restaurant in the bronx together. >> you think no, no, no, this is not a good partnership. these two have so many issues they're dealing with. except in a strange way they both need each other to get their lives back on track. >> that's exactly right. they're both broken people and struggling and they really are the only family they have left to each other. they've been childhood friends. they have to borrow a lot of money from some very bad people. >> i was going to say, i haven't even gotten to the mob part yet. >> right. >> it's complicated. one thing that struck me as i was watching this, it is dark t does deal with serious issues, but there's also humor in it. i've always found that kind of dark humor is harder to pull off than sitcom humor. >> yeah. the tone of the show is tricky. because you've got to create characters that people feel are credible and believable.

and so because these characters are coming from a place of tragedy, the humor -- you know, some of the greatest jokes come from the darkest times we're in. i think it's a defense mechanism mainly that survival -- we have to make fun of our situation because it's so, so ridiculously tragic. >> last few times you've been here, you have been talking about dramas. i'm curious, is this something you're consciously deciding to do or are these just the roles that seem to be presenting themselves to you? >> yeah. it's not any kind of conscious decision. i was offered the car dakardash role on the o.j. thing. i always wanted to work with ryan murphy. that just seemed like, yeah, let's do that. this came up right after that. i was like, wow, this is another great character. and i thought the show, which is created by clyde phillips, of "dexter" and "nurse jackie," i thought this is a great show. >> when you decided to play rob kardashian on the o.j. series,

did you think it would reopen so many intense conversations, or did you just see it as a role? >> no. that was my hope, actually, that it would somehow contribute to the conversations we're having in the country, over the last two years at least and, hopefully, frame the conversation in a way to look at these events 20 years later and for us to ask ourselves, has anything changed in 20 years in terms of the prejudice in this country and how tough it is for -- in terms of the legal system if you're of a certain class. it's much harder to get the verdict you deserve, perhaps. >> so nice for me to see about you, you told me you took some time off, got married, had a child, who is now 5. when you decided to get back to work, work found you in a big hurry. that's a good thing. >> it was a nice coincidence.

musical chemistry, chemistry chemistry. it's exciting. is it weird, though, that everybody feels like they're in on it and rooting for your romance and all that? >> it's a little weird. but i get it. it's such a -- look, i mean, we could not be on paper any more different. i mean, i'm a country singer and she's a skull, rock, pop, whatever it is. you know, it's just an odd idea. but, man, it's a lot of fun. i've got to be honest about that. >> you have a lot going on. you have a song on the new "angry bird" sound track and have a part. >> yeah. >> would you become an actor? this is so exciting. >> you would be good at that. have you ever done -- >> no. go ahead, tell me more. >> you would be good, because your personality comes out. i got this offer to write the song for the "angry birds" movie and sing it. and in the meeting, the original meeting we had with john cohen had drawn this character, a pig that i would be playing and they had drawn my tattoo on the pig's arm.

officials say it disappeared suddenly from radar while cruising at 37,000 feet. let's get the very latest right now. >> reporter: hey, willie, good morning. let hee just bring you up-to-date with the latest that we have heard in the past hour or so. a greek army commander, telling nbc news that two objects that have been found in the area of the mediterranean do appear to be a metallic object and an orange life jacket from an airplane. meanwhile two u.s. intelligence officials have told nbc news there was nothing finite, nothing specific in the chatter about upcoming attack on aviation. there is nothing out there, this official says, to confirm foul play, the officials say. now, this aircraft -- i can't hear you guys any longer, but i'll just keep telling you, this aircraft was flying from here across the mediterranean through

greek air space and was half an hour away from landing in cairo when it simply disappeared. what we know so far, 56 passengers, 10 crew members on board. it lost contact at 2:45 am cairo time. it disappeared 10 miles inside egyptian air space. the altitude was last measured at 37,000 feet. now, as i mentioned, there are families inside this hotel here at charles de gaulle airport who are waiting for news. we've been watching french officials arrive and debrief them because, plainly, they will want to be sure they have information before anybody else, before that information is released. that is the crucial thing. while we, everywhere, want to know what happened, what caused this, whether it was some kind of mechanical failure, whether

taking a look at the headlines and breaking news now on egypt air flight 804 which disappeared early today on a flight from paris to cairo, a greek military official says an egyptian search plane has located two orange items believed to be debris from the missing egypt air flight. the official says the items were found 230 miles south-southeast of the island of crete. but it is still within the egyptian air traffic control area. there were 66 people on board. a new drug is showing remarkable results in the fight against the deadliest form of skin cancer. the drug keytruda was used to treat former president jimmy carter after doctors found that melanoma spread to his brain. researchers say about 40% of

advanced melanoma patients who have been taking the drug were still alive three years later. the study's lead author calls the results incredible. a new study suggests taking aspirin within minutes of a mini stroke can dramatically reduce the risk of a subsequent major stroke by 70% to 80%. mini strokes or tias can be a warning sign of a bigger stroke later on. experts say anyone who has a stroke symptom should immediately take 300 milligrams of aspirin before help arrives. symptoms for a mini stroke include numbness or muscle weakness usually on one side of the body. difficulty speaking, dizziness or loss of balance. being busy may be good for the brain. researchers at the university of texas at dallas studied men and women who are at least 50 years old, asking about their daily schedules and then putting them through a series of mental tests. they found busy people tend to have sharper minds and better memories. researchers say it's not clear if there was a direct cause and effect, but they do say that busy people have more

opportunities to learn. auto loans in the u.s. have hit a milestone. data from experian shows in the first three months of this year, overall amount borrowed for car loans topped $1 trillion for the first time. now that does not include money borrowed for leased vehicles. the auto borrowing binge is being driven by low interest rates, longer loans and consumers waiting for more options on new cars. take a look at this. the most expensive diamond ever sold at auction. it's that beautiful blue diamond known as the oppenheimer diamond. it went for $57.5 million at christy's in geneva, switzerland. not only the most expensive but the largest vivid blue diamond ever put up for auction. christy's did not immediately identify the buyer. somebody's getting engaged in a big way. let's get a check of the weather now from al. >> i love those blue diamond smoked almonds. those are awfully tasty, but that's another thing, i think, they're talking about.
