embarcadero off ramp cleared 15 minutes. full recovery there. that friday commute, a lighter commute and allowed things to improve through that area. there is a wind advisory from chp. gusty across the brinl. hold on. an update to breaking news within the last few hours. egypt's military has confirmed it found debris and passenger belongings in the mediterranean sea believed to have come from flight 804. kris sanchez joining us with new information. things seem to be evolving by the minute. >> right. in addition to what you just mentioned that now we have just in the last few minutes confirmed that the european says agency spotted what appeared to be an oil slick in the same area where 804 is believed to have crashed, that is the same area where egyptian military report finding suitcases and perhaps the first of the 66 people

onboard. u.s. navy is lending air and intelligence support to dig into the background of each passenger to determine possible ties to terror groups. a search area is in the mediterranean. a different area than what is initially reported this time yesterday. airbus 320 fromç headed to cai when it is believed to have crashed. there has been no claim of responbility from terror groups, the egyptian president is not ruling out that possibility. if it was terror, the search for physical evidence may be difficult. >> you don't need a lot of explosive if the airline is at full altitude to compromise a structure that high up. you can force a plane to break up. >> if you are flying out of bay area airports today, you may notice increased security where you land. l.a.x., counterterrorism security measure so there is no specified threat. at cairo, that's where investigators are doling out

information where the families of those victims are gathered. they are gathered at a mosque in cairo praying for the best. >> we do as well. thank you, kris. here is a local story making national headlines. front page reads "no suhr." the embattled police chief resigned yesterday after another fatal officer-involved shooting. reaction from not just detractors but people who support him as well. >> good morning. you've got people on both sides. he served in the department 30 plus years. protesters say they are not done yet. they want mayor ed lee also to resign. looking for more changes here at city hall. the mayor has not responded to those demands, but he was the one who announced suhr's resignation late yesterday afternoon after police shot and

killed an unarmed woman. the mayor announcing suhr's replacement, veteran of the department and deputy chief of the department. that focuses on accountability and transparency. protesters are more hopeful after learning he is a man of color. >> he recently established our new professional standards and principles in policing bureau. the arm of the department that foc focuses on accountability and transparency. >> the frisco 5 say mayor lee must resign. supervisor say it doesn't make sense he chooses a police chief and overseas the office of citizen complaints. he plans to introduce legislation to removes the office of citizen complaints from the mayor's power. supervisors are focused on the

search for a permanent replacement. we'll hear from them in the next half hour. >> politics aside, this is a blow for the sfpd. the entire department has been instructed not to speak publically. a high-ranking officer tells us chief suhr poured his life and soul into his job. "having worked with or for chief suhr when he was a sergeant, lieutenant, captain and command staff member, i can personally vouch for his integrity, his morals and his deep commitment to the mission of public safety. his retirement under pressure is an extreme loss to the department and the city." our coverage will continue online at nbc bay.com where you can watch and read his full statement. new this morning, lanes back open on the bay bridge after a deadly crash between a motorcyclist and a car.

happened 2:30 this morning on the western portion of the bridge. three lanes were closed but reopened an hour ago. a man who broke into a fremont apartment being fumigated died. police think he may have been trying to burglarize the building. police say the man was having trouble breathing and died at the hospital. officers determined that he spent several minutes inside that apartment that was marked "do not enter." it was being fumigated with hazardous chemicals. this man allegedly attacked his teenage girlfriend in stockton and forced her into his car. he is still on the run. police believe he may be in the fresno or san jose area. three people recovering after a crash involving several cars in san francisco's sunnydale neighborhood.

this happened on geneva and calgary before 4:00 yesterday. police are not releasing any more details how it happened and whether anyone was arrested. a letter filled with suspicious powder delivered to kaiser medical offices in antioch. the letter arrived and was opened yesterday afternoon. health officials did test the substance. results are not conclusive but one of the tests came back positive for corn starch and flour. putting a hurting on the st. louis blues. hertl scored twice last night. two goals pushed the sharks to a 3-0 shutout. that gives them a 2-1 lead in the western conference finals and the sharks have never before played in a stanley cup final series which would be where they

market. san jose came in second after jumping 17% to 43%. oakland is third on the national list with 20% of all homes listed at six figures, seven figures or more. golfer phil mickelson had to write a check for about $1 million. >> we told you about this as it happened yesterday on "today in the bay." phil mickelson accused of making a nearly million dollar profit on a stock tip he should not have gotten. this morning securities and exchange commission says it is dropping its investigation as mickelson gives his profits to the s.e.c. dean foods own berkeley farms here in the bay.

this guy from horm he'll is really going to close that bell. uber's eventual plan is to replace drivers with robots. we talked in the past about automation replacing lots of jobs. technology costs are coming down at the same time labor costs are going up. you're starting to see self-serve technology. chili's uses a self-ordering kiosk. they don't replace the waiter, but they serve more tables. we are getting so used to this

other spots are completely clear. looking at some of our temperatures out there now, it's starting to dip here as the sunrises. it's 49 in livermore and 5 3 in san jose and palo alto. high temperatures reaching the mid to upper 60s. lower 60s along the coast. in san francisco, upper 60s for santa rosa and oakland. 66. seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen shows temperatures will stay cool a few more days. it will feel chilly for the a's game later this evening. 64 at first pitch. it will be windy. bundle up. for the giants game will be cooler at 59. dropping back to 58 with gusty winds continuing. this is part of the reason why. we had this area of low pressure that is giving us the strong onshore flow. it's also going against the high pressure we had just a couple of days ago. we have high and low pressure close together. makes that air get really dusty.

we'll start to see spotty showers moving in late tonight. mainly for parts of the south bay. we could see them in the north bay. we'll start to see more coverage into the day tomorrow. it won't rain all day. don't expect it to be very widespread. while we get spotty showers here, snow will be coming down for the higher elevations in the sierra. it starts today and continues into the day tomorrow. in the meantime, you're looking at the potential of over a foot of snow in twin bridges and ten inches. we'll have some spots that will get quite a bit of snow for this weekend. have those tire chains. temperaturewise looking at low 60s for tomorrow. spotty showers once again. a mix of sun and clouds. gusty winds. it will be a little bit better on sunday. at least we don't have to worry about the rain and temperatures will come up a couple more degrees. i'll have another update in a

before professional sporting events? turns out teams often take at 6:24, those patriotic displays before professional sporting events, the teams are taking taxpayer money to put them on. arizona senators, that includes john mccain, are saying pro and college sports teams received close to $7 million in so-called paid patriotism. that's for color guard displays and video tributes. mccain has been calling foul for months. the nfl is coming clean. commissioner roger goodell said a league audit found teams took more than $700,000. that money will be reimbursed.

irresponsible and dangerous. we'll hear more from trump today. he spokes to the nra for the second year in a row, trying to shore up his credentials with the conservative base. we are told in a preview he may or may not be using a teleprompter and with him will be jeff sessions and kentucky governor matt bevin. hillary clinton has new ads talking about trump and foreign policy, things like nato, north korea, areas where she thinks his decision would put the u.s. in jeopardy. by the way, don't forget about bernie sanders banking on california to say in this race. but the democratic party are trying to get some of his peefrm on a platform committee to have more influence on what issues the democrats will focus on. they are hoping he will drop out early.

suitcases and sadly human remains. the discovery was made from about five miles where investigators believe the plane went down into the mediterranean sea. the egyptian president says there is a possibility the crash was an act of terror. kris sanchez is tracking the latest on the crash in our newsroom. her live report is coming at 6:56. as we embark on a new chapter for the police, we aim to restore this trust. >> a community that's been on edge and now there is a new leader in charge. the san francisco police department. >> chief greg suhr officially resigned in the wake of yet another deadly shooting at the hands of his officers. stephy chuang live in san francisco with reaction from suhr's supporters and detractors. >> good morning. >> you can see the barricades still here behind me where the protesters actually turned into

a celebration of his resignation. now they are focused on the top of the chain mayor ed lee. protesters like the frisco 5 say lee must immediately resign following the death of people of color killed in police shootings. the breaking point ahead of suhr's resignation was yesterday. police shot and killed a black woman suspected of stealing a car in the neighborhood. tony chaplain is the acting chief. >> the police department is now on notice. we have a black man who is filling that role now. and they all know that they will not be able to continue with their racist pedagoguey. supervisors raid in on

suhr's regular nation. thanking him for his 30 plus years of service and calling for unity. another supervisor has turned his eyes on something else, removing the office of citizen complaints from mayor lee's hour. he says it doesn't make sense he oversees the office and chooses the police chief. he will introduce legislation in the coming days on that issue. stephanie chuang, today in the bay. 6:34 on your friday. california law makers have now taken the first step in allowing police departments to fight or delay the release of internal video footage. los angeles assemblyman is calling for at least three days notice to allow police departments the chance to delay or possibly even keep secrets the release of body camera footage. protect it without requiring departments to seek illegal injunction. they are calling this idea outright suppression. the assembly approved that unanimously. new stricter gun laws are

making it through the california legislature. a package of bills from the san bernardino attacks last year. two guns belonged to the neighbor of the shooters. the law if approved would limit the lending of firearms to family members. sellers would need to be licensed and background checks on ammo buyers. opponents say existing gun laws are good enough. the bills will go to the state assembly. more shootings at celebrations. san francisco pride celebration is next month. some are fighting hard to stop this year's celebration at the civic center. san francisco chronicle reports two lawsuits have been filed citing shootings that happened in 2012, 2013 and 2014. the lawsuits claimed that the pride committee has not taken action to make that event safer. the lawsuits affect only the

civic center celebration and not the parade. >> 6:35. a san jose community is in the pits after learning the city plans to remove 200 olive trees. the 35-year-old trees line monterey road in south san jose. they are getting complaints the fruit is getting in the way of cyclists and walkers. the plan is to replace the olive trees with other greenery. neighbors have signed a petition to save the trees. they will make a final decision next friday. >> this is a green trail going up. the san francisco bay trail which willing all nine bay area counties is one step closer to being done. golden gate field is donating almost five acres to this project. the land is water front property that runs through berkeley and albany. amazing views of the bay, golden gate bridge. >> a salute from the sharks to their devoted fans in the

november's paris attacks faces his first hearing since he was extradited to france from belgium. the leading suspect in last november's paris attack faces his first series since being extradited to paris. he is expected to be questioned by judges. an issue torn at parents' hearts in the bay area. the community of palo alto

grieving the loss of young lives. two suicide clusters over the past seven years have been found. now the father of a palo alto teen took his life last year is speaking out to other parents, urging them to take the issue of mental illness seriously. 17-year-old harry lee was a joke-telling, artistic student at gunn high school. he confessed to his parents he was depressed. just a month later, he committed suicide in his house in january 2015. now his father is speaking to peninsula parents telling them to keep their kids safe from academic and cultural pressures. >> i think more important thing to praise your kids is to assess who they are, not what they do. to accept them today, not what they are going to be in the future. >> lee says that speaking out is his way of honoring his son. he's considering more parents or

asking them to talk to their kids in the future. 6:44. severe pipeline corrosion has been ultimately been blamed for the oil spill in santa barbara county last year according to investigators. took about a year to come to this conclusion. the hazardous material safety administration released its final report on the spill. the investigation found that the operator failed to detect corrosion of that pipeline. more than 120,000 gallons of oil leaked into the ocean. that spill linked to the death of hundreds of sea birds and marine mammals forced closure of two state beaches and left oil slicks that stretched over nine miles of the pacific. operators of the pipeline says the spill was a crime but it was not an -- it was not a crime, it's an accident. a frozen food recall expands from 11 products to 400 products. it comes after two people died and several sickened with

lysteria linked illnesses. they are made out of washington state. the foot i'dems were sold under more than 40 different booby-trapped names dating back to last year. costco, target, trader joe's and safeway sold those recalled foods. six out of eight people that got sick were from california. business news the nation's top african-american nation ceo will not be a ceo much longer. just got off the phone with xerox. usually the ceo moves to lead one of those companies. the company announcing this morning ursula burns will remain ceo of xerox until the split is complete. she will no longer be ceo. taking a look at the markets, they are mildly higher this morning. not a whole lot of economic data

temperatures much cooler than the past couple of days. only reaching low to mid 60s. upper 60s. burlingame 65. embarcadero 60. throw in gusty winds, it will be a day to make sure you have on long sleeves. as our temperature trends stay below average in the south bay, we should be at 76, but we will be at 66 tomorrow. think back a couple of days ago when we had that hot weather. it topped out in the 90s in the south bay. big changes because of this area of low pressure moving in. we have a counterclockwise flow. that brings in a strong onshore flow. will bring in a chance of showers here. doesn't look like we'll have widespread rain. very hit or miss showers that could pop-up any time during the day. as you get out there, have the

heal the community. >> the police department is now on notice. we have a black man who is filling that role now and they all know that they will not be able to continue with their racist pedagogue. >> greg suhr will be replaced by tony chaplain. chaplain will serve as acting chief. for some people mourning the woman killed in yesterday's shooting, the problems facing the sfpd go far below the surface. >> this is an important and tragic part of the story of what is happening to black people and brown folks. >> during a vigil last night, people walked to the exact spot where that police shooting took place. there are reports officers were trying to pull the woman from a stolen car that was still moving. the police officers association says it is disappointed with suhr's resignation.
