one. i was alone for that trip. look at all the people joining us this morning here on the plaza as cycling center, soul cycle centers all over the country. we'll have a good time. our whole 8:00 half hour, we'll be on the bikes. >> that's right. so stand by for panting. >> exactly right. in the meantime, president obama really did have strong words for donald trump. you just heard a small portion. he went on from there. we'll show you more of that coming up. first, let's get to our top story. severe weather and tornadoes ravaging parts of the midwest overnight. let's go to nbc's gabe gutierrez in abilene, kansas, very hard hit. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. slow-moving storm barreling down on the small town of chapman, devastated by another tornado in 2008. thankfully, this tornado swirled to the south, barely missing the town. it left behind debris throughout this county.

now, residents are describing terrifying moments. this morning, more communities are assessing the damage after a monster tornado. >> big, big tornado. big tornado. >> reporter: the national weather service calling this a potentially catastrophic twister, half a mile wide, chewing through dickinson county, kansas, barely missing the small town of chapman but leaving a trail of destruction. the tornado on the ground more than an hour, damaging at least 15 homes. >> that's a barn sitting in the road, folks. >> reporter: sheer power lifting entire structures. there have been 55 reported tornadoes spanning six states over the past 48 hours. near dodge city, kansas, tuesday, this twister tossed cars and obliterated home. >> it seems surreal. >> reporter: today families in bristow, oklahoma, are also picking up the pieces. beth roberts rushed into her cellar with only moments to spare. if you had waited a few more minutes -- >> we would have been sucked out that window.

it was just like a loud, rumble, roaring, humming noise, something i've never heard in my entire life. >> reporter: the severe weather blamed for at least one death in oklahoma. leslie kemp barely survived with her 2-year-old. >> trees were falling around the house. i grabbed my son and we got in the inner part of the house and we rode out the tornado. >> reporter: today, the heartland bracing for the potential of severe weather again. remarkably, this tornado claimed no lives. the threat isn't over yet. the potential for tornadoes later today here in kansas and nebraska. guys, back to you. >> gabe, thank you. >> what are they facing? >> the problem is, yesterday we had really a slight risk. today we have an enhanced risk. there is the potential for much more severe weather today. and it's going to last into tonight. and that's when we really get concerned. overnight storms are the worst because you can't see them coming. from minneapolis all the way down to st. louis, strong storms

firing up. for today, from sioux falls to del rio, a risk of severe weather. enhanced risk, great bend. 20 million people under risk. greatest threats from southern nebraska to kansas. tomorrow, oklahoma city to corpus christi, another severe storm risk. 17 million people at risk. we're talking not only damaging winds, isolated tornados. we're going to watch this fire up. watch what happens around 11:00 between san angelo and dallas. strong storms. that's what we're really worried about. it continues into friday. dallas and houston in the storm threat there, and all the way up to oklahoma city. rainfall is also going to be a problem from minneapolis, kansas city, all the way down into central texas. some areas could be picking up six to eight inches of rain. so, flash flooding will be a threat as well. >> keep an eye on that. >> you bet. >> thank you very much. now to the search for solutions to those long tsa lines at airports nationwide as

the busy summer travel season is about to really get under way. the man who runs the agency, vice admiral peter neffenger, was on capitol hill answering questions. this morning he is with us for an exclusive live interview. first, tom costello is at reagan national airport with the very latest. tom, good morning. >> reporter: hi, savannah. good morning. american airlines will tell congress today that 70,000 of its customers have missed their flights so far this year. that's just american. 40,000 bags have not made their connections. tsa says it's making big progress, but it's still 4,000 to 5,000 officers short. facing fed-up members of congress, tsa chief peter neffenger on the hot seat wednesday. >> i think you're a good man, competent man who has been given an impossible task. >> i think most of the american people view it as an historic critical failure. >> reporter: wait times have stretched to two hours, three in chicago last week. >> chicago was a preventable

incident in my opinion. >> reporter: anger that a now demoted assistant administrator was paid $90,000 and merit bonuses even as screeners were failing undercover audits. >> i can't justify the level of bonuses provided in the past. i can tell you i stopped that. >> reporter: anger that tsa officers are leaving airports to help the secret service screen audience at political events. >> where is the priority of supporting these events that have nothing to do with the core mission? >> i would like to be fully focused on my core mission. >> reporter: tsa staffing problems are serious, 2,500 fewer screeners than in 2011, even though passenger volume has surged by more than 100 million. they are hiring more officers, converting part-timers to full-time and adding more dog teams and relying on airline staffers to move lines along. those long lines may only get worse over the summer. and there are many reasons for this. among them, tsa failed to staff up appropriately when they have

record volumes of people coming. they expected more people to sign up for tsa precheck than actually signed up. they had a big problem with part-timers quitting because they're frustrated with the job, monotony and also not getting full-time work. >> thank you, tom. vice admiral peter neffenger is the chief of tsa. good morning. >> good morning. >> tom set it up well. these lines didn't develop overnight. somebody had to see this coming with low fares attracting more travelers, with people taking things through screening sites that they weren't taking through in years past and with staffing problems. did you do enough to avoid the problems when you first saw them coming? >> when i came in last summer we were on the heels of -- we were in a real crisis, generated by the inspector general. so we had to get better on our mission and really focused on that. in doing that, i knew it was going to cause the lines to back

up. why is that? because we had to slow down a bit. we weren't paying close enough attention. and i shifted a lot of people back into the standard lines following an unsafe practice of moving people in. >> i think that's the other big part of this. people might not mind waiting in a line if they didn't also read that when federal inspectors went in there, those screening tests failed 95% of the time. just kind of adds insult to injury, doesn't it? >> as i said, we had to get better at our mission. it's a critically important mission, and we're in a pretty high threat environment. you have to make sure you're able to do the thing you're hired to do, which is protect the aviation system. >> it's life and death. one thing, admiral neffenger, that worried me, there were reports within your agency that when employees of yours talk about security breaches or report security breaches that in some ways they're punished for it. they're reassigned or

transferred. that can't happen if you're asking the general public if you see something, say something. >> uh-huh. >> you can't have tsa employees afraid to see something and say something. >> i agree completely. one of the things i've been trying to do over the past year that i've been here is a fundamental transformation of the way we think internally, the way we treat our people and the way we encourage people to come forward. it's unacceptable to take action against people who are just trying to bring forward good ideas. >> will you guarantee that will not happen in the future? >> it will not happen. i've made a lot of changes to our personnel policies and practices and spent a lot of time reaching out to people to understand what's going on. >> a lot of people go to the airport. they see your agency -- i mean it's a federal agency that everybody sees. and a lot of times they wonder, would it just be easier if a private company came in here and did this work? what's your argument to that? >> let me start by saying the security of this nation is a national responsibility, federal responsibility. no matter how you do it, you need federal oversight of the system to ensure consistency and

high standards. we currently have a system that allows an airport to request a private contractor. it's important to remember that contractor is still contracted to the tsa, to the federal government. and that goes back to that need to have federal oversight. >> you need to be able to pay people more, don't you? the average tsa worker makes about $30,000 a year. that's about the same as a manager at mcdonald's. nothing against the people at mcdonald's, but shouldn't a guy or a woman responsible for keeping a bomb, a gun or knife off a plane be paid more? and does congress need to loosen up the purse strings so you can pay these people more? >> well, first, thank you for recognizing the front line of some of the most dedicated people i've seen. they deserve our thanks every time we see them. >> and they deserve more money? >> i would like to see pay and benefits reform across the system. >> are the airlines doing enough? dhs secretary asked the airlines to wave those baggage fees, if people check more bags, lines will go faster and essentially they said no, thanks. do they need to step up?

>> i've been working closely with all the major u.s. airlines and they've done a tremendous amount to help us in recent weeks, hiring contract staff to carry out nonsecurity related duties, running the bins back and forth and helping people remember to take the right things off as they move through the line. >> if they dropped those fees, would lines get shorter? >> what i'm focused on is getting people moving efficiently through. if they could help us enforce the one plus one rule, that's very important. if you can reduce checkpoints -- >> with all due respect, if they dropped those first checked bagged fees, would the lines get shorter? >> i don't know that there's a direct correlation between that. there is a direct correlation between people carrying prohibited items through the checkpoint and long lines at the checkpoint. >> the flying public is watching. should they expect long lines to continue? this summer, should they come two to three hours early?

>> we're going to see record travel volume again. we're on track to screen more people this year than we did in 2013. that said, we put a lot of measures in place and really focusing on -- most airports are really good. it's the top 20 airports where you're seeing the biggest challenge. we're putting a lot of resource in those airports, and i hope you'll see -- you'll see long lines but move efficiently through the system. >> you're good to join us this morning. >> thank you. >> a lot of people counting on you and your employees. >> thank you. president obama is weighing in on the presidential race in a big way, speaking at a summit in japan. the president is hammering donald trump and his policies and weighing in on the democratic side of things as well. here at home, a trump rally has led to clashes between protesters and police for a second straight day. our decision 2016 team is on the story again. let's start with nbc's hallie jackson. hallie, good morning. >> reporter: hi, savannah. good morning. as people line up for donald trump's rally here in montana, the candidate is going after

primary, guys. by the way, #bernie/trump debate trending online overnight. >> hallie jackson, thank you. now to hillary clinton, an e-mail scandal that just won't go away. a blistering new review of her use of a private server. nbc's andrea mitchell has that part of the story. andrea, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the state department report undercuts key arguments that hillary clinton has been making for more than a year, just as clinton is trying to persuade voters she is not untrustworthy. hillary clinton, grappling with the growing political fallout over her e-mails from her rival, donald trump. >> crooked hillary. inspector general's report, not good. >> reporter: to bernie sanders, who once defended clinton over the e-mail controversy. >> the american people are sick and fired of hearing about your damn e-mails. >> reporter: sanders' campaign now refusing to throw clinton a

lifeline saying "the ig report speaks for itself." the scathing report taking aim at clinton for only using a private home e-mail server as secretary of state. the key findings, no evidence clinton requested or obtained permission to use a private server. and the report says clinton violated federal rules by not turning over all official e-mails before she left office, concluding sending e-mails from a personal account to other employees is not an appropriate method of preserving e-mails. despite clinton telling nbc news her system was fully above board. >> people knew i was using a personal e-mail. i did it for convenience. i sent e-mails that i thought were work related to people's dotgov accounts. >> reporter: her clintons were not all saved for the record. a report also reveals a new e-mail exchange between clinton n her top aide huma abedin over whether clinton should get an official state department address or provide her private address to the department.

abedin, we should talk about putting you on state e-mail or releasing your e-mail address to the department so you are not going to spam. clinton's response? let's get separate address or device but i don't want any risk of the personal being accessible. the report also called the private server security into question. noting it was shut down twice on one day in 2011 after the clinton's computer security adviser feared it had been hacked. though he said they did not get in, later warning abedin not to e-mail clinton anything sensitive. house speaker paul ryan arguing the report underscores what we already know about hillary clinton. she simply can't be trusted. clinton responded telling univision, i have turned over all my e-mails. no one else can say that. i have been incredibly open about doing that. i will continue to be open, and it's not an issue that will affect either the campaign or my presidency. clinton was the only former secretary of state refusing to

==topvo== are canceled today -gh school to you. 7:26. classes at novato high school are canceled today after a deadly shooting off campus yesterday that involved at least one student. authorities are looking for three people in connection with the shooting at the end of fairway drive near the marin country club. deputies found one man shot and stabbed. that person is expected to survive. the second victim was later found shot to death. authorities have not indicated how the student or students are tied to the case. the school says grief counselors will be on hand when students return to class next tuesday. a warming trend on the way. >> today will be that last day of comfortable weather across the bay area. we start out with clouds in spots, it will be a touch warmer

and damaged or destroyed at least two dozen homes. so far no injuries have been reported. police in new york are investigating a late-night shooting at a concert venue where rapper t.i. was set to perform. one person was killed, three others wounded. video from inside that venue shows the chaotic scene that followed as concert goers ran for cover. no arrests have been made in that case. check out this spectacular site, italy's mt. etna erupting once again. it was short, but the volcano erupts several times a year but the last major eruption was 1992. unusual development tied to last month's murder of a popular fitness instructor at a church in north texas. the woman's friends and family saying they were recently sent friend requests from her facebook account. here is nbc's kerry sanders.

>> reporter: when texas fitness instructor missy bevers was murdered in april, detectives from the midlothian police department began comparing this security camera video to photos and videos on missy's facebook page. they hoped to match the murderer's unusual duck-like walk to someone who missy was friends with on facebook. but now an unexpected facebook twist in the case. lead investigators tell nbc news, someone created another facebook page in missy bevers' name, a fake. and then systematically started making friend requests, targeting missy's students, from the camp gladiator workout classes she led. missy's step mother-in-law, vickie bevers also got a bogus request. when those who received the friend requests clicked on them, the page disappeared. but detectives confirm to nbc news at least one person got a screen grab before it vanished. was it the murderer, playing an

ugly game of catch me if you can? or could it have been a sick joke? a scammer, or some type of social media glitch? >> this investigation involves both cutting-edge technology and old-fashioned gum shoe detective work. >> reporter: telling nbc news they have little to go on, no i.p. address. best we can tell so far, he says, the profile is gone, which means a dead end for us. which brings the investigation back to that video of the suspect. a police analysis has determined the murderer is between 5'2" and 5'7", but it is still unclear if it's a woman or a man. >> in a strange way, i'm thankful for the attention that this is receiving. >> reporter: missy's husband spoke to fox 4, kdfw, in dallas this week, begging the murderer to step forward. >> i truly want to just reach out to this individual myself. as odd as it may sound, i can

truly forgive you for what you've done but only if you come forward, turn yourself in. >> reporter: 38 days into this case, police have a fuzzy shot of an altima in a parking lot at a nearby gun store the morning of missy's murder. that video and now a fake facebook page that's vanished and still unknown, why missy bevers was targeted for murder. for "today," kerry sanders, nbc news. now we turn to the legal drama surrounding the highly celebrated u.s. women's soccer team. defending world champs are set to make a run for the gold again at the rio olympics. there's a possibility that the players could go on strike over pay and other issues. natalie has been following this for us. hey, natalie. >> that's right. not great timing but the team and federation that governs them will face off in a federal court in chicago. the two sides are at odds over a collective bargaining agreement which prevents the team from going on strike. players association said they can strike if they choose to.

they say the agreement is no longer valid. now the legal fight could have big consequences, both on and off the field. in chicago this morning, high stakes for the u.s. women's soccer team. a federal judge will hear arguments over a contract dispute between the u.s. soccer federation and the players union. the major issue? the team's collective bargaining agreement and whether or not the union can call for a strike before the summer olympics in rio. >> the olympics are at hand. the women are set to play. if they win this lawsuit, they may have the right -- they may not use it, but they may have the right to strike before we see them at the olympics. >> in a statement, the federation says they stand by their collective bargaining agreement, calling it valid and binding. telling nbc news they, quote, remain committed to negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement with the players association to take effect when the current one expires at the end of the year. today's hearing comes as the two

sides clash over the issue of equal pay. >> this lawsuit and the women's demand for equal pay are really intertwined. if a court finds that the women are bound by a collective bargaining agreement, they may have little room to ask for more money. >> it's about equality. it's about equal rights. >> speaking here on "today," top players explained why they filed a separate lawsuit, accusing the federation of wage discrimination. >> we have sacrificed so much. every single day we sacrifice just as much as the men. we work just as much. we endure just as much physically and emotionally. >> the team's success is hard to argue. winning three world cup titles and three consecutive olympic gold medals. after winning the world cup, the women's complaint says they earned a $2 million bonus, but they say the men's team earned $9 million, and they lost in the round of 16. the fight over the collective bargaining agreement would give the women leverage in the fight for equal pay.

depending where you are, it's going to be very summer like. in the east, we're looking at temperatures today, by the end of the week they'll be in the 80s from indiana, indianapolis, all the way up into burlington and into raleigh. head into the midsection of the country. again, those temperatures in the 80s for the most part, even 90s. then you head out west. look what happens. temperatures way below average and it's going to stay that way . of the bay area. it will all clear out this afternoon. you'll notice our temperatures will be a touch warmer than the past few days. still feeling nice. at lunch time, 68 in the peninsula. 73 in the north bay with highs today reaching 78 in the tri valley. upper 70s for the south bay and north bay. san francisco looking at a high of 66 degrees. we will continue to have more of this warm weather heading into the weekend.
