of charleston. authorities shut it down after too many drivers tried to go through it. flood waters submerged homes. in myrtle beach, some rip currents had vacationers concerned to go in the water. >> i get nervous when my kids get further than their knees. >> reporter: rescuers are still searching for a 21-year-old man who went missing in north carolina late saturday after swimming in rough water. in texas, it was another round of flash flooding. several communities calling mandatory evacuations. >> we knew it was coming, but at the same time, i mean, you don't prepare for something like this, to pack up your whole house. >> reporter: among the deaths in texas, a national guardsman, who posted this haunting image on facebook, as flood waters overcame his truck. writing, all i wanteto do was go home. in houston, the river is filling

over its banks. more than 2,000 inmates from several prisons moved to higher ground. an astronaut tweeting what the texas rivers looked like from the air. >> and the death toll in texas is now up to six, as some rivers are still over their banks. back here in myrtle beach, it looks like it's going to be a beautiful day on the beach. but there is still the concern up and down the coast here, north carolina, south carolina, about the possible impact of those rip currents. tamron and carson, back to you. >> thank you very much, janet. severe weather is far from over. dylan is in for al. what can we expect today? >> there's so much going on. we're going to start with a tropical depression now. these are the remnants of bonnie. it's going to continue to move up the coast. as it does, we have the moisture streaming in off the atlantic here. we're going to continue to see pockets of heavier rain this morning. a cold front will slide this all to the east. we'll see improvements later this afternoon. then as you get daytime heating

and an approaching cold front, we're going to see pop-up showers and storms. rain this morning, then a break, then more storms developing later on today, as this cold front continues to move. tuesday, this will push most of the rain through the carolinas. spotty showers and storms but enough to produce two to three inches of rain. in the new york area, we could see an inch of rain. most is already on the ground. parts of texas, where we are going to see another round of storms develop this week. today's main focus is going to be across the northern plains. the cold front combining with the warm, humid air mass will trigger storms today across the northern plains. stormy down through texas. today, we're looking at the best chance of storms through north dakota and nebraska, where we could see large hail as the biggest threat. >> ruin some barbecues today. >> dylan, thank you very much. to the presidential race now. donald trump is making headlines over controversial comments at an annual event for veterans in washington, d.c. while a top supporter of hillary clinton is calling on bernie sanders to end his white house

run. kristen welker is in new york. good morning. >> good morning to you. weather permitting, hillary clinton is expected to march in the annual memorial day parade, right here in chappaqua where she has a home. donald trump is off the campaign trail, but he spent part of the holiday weekend courting veterans. all this as speculation swirls about a possible third-party candidate entering the race. >> reporter: donald trump rolled into the annual rolling thunder event, honoring prisoners of war. >> look, memorial day, so important. it's our day, and we have to be very proud of it. we are very proud of it. >> reporter: trump, who did not serve in the military, arguing he'd be better for veterans than hillary clinton. making this claim about undocumented immigrants. >> legal immigrants are taken

much better care by this country. taken care of than the veterans. >> reporter: the reality, congress and many states have enacted laws aimed at restricting government services to those living in the country illegally. trump raising eyebrows by drawing a contrast to the 1963 march on washington. >> i'll tell you what amazes me. i thought this would be like dr. martin luther king, where the people would be lined up from here all the way to the washington monument, right? >> reporter: this morning, could a third-party candidate will set to join the race? conservative commentator bill kristol dropping this hint. there will be an impressive, independent candidate with a strong team and a real chance. trump calling krtol an embarrassed loser. arguing the third-party candidate would be a spoiler. this weekend, trump went on a 12-minute tirade over the federal judge overseeing the lawsuit against trump university, who ordered the unsealing of hundreds of

documents related to the case. >> the judge, which we believe to be mexican, which is great. it's fine. >> reporter: in fact, the judge was born in indiana. meanwhile, over the weekend, hillary clinton was off the trail. the top surrogate turned up the heat on bernie sanders. >> he ought to be able to read the si post. if hdid that, he would know that it's all but over. >> reporter: on "meet the press," sanders saying he's in the race till the end. when asked about party unity? >> if secretary clinton is the nominee, it is her job to reach out to millions of people and make the case as to why she is going to defend working families. that is the candidate's job to do. >> now, sanders also didn't rule out running as secretary clinton's vp nominee, but stressed he is focused on winning the nomination. for donald trump, he has said he'd going to release details about money he's raised for

veterans charities tomorrow. tamron and carson, back to you. >> thank you so much. let's bring in steve kornacki. good morning. >> morning, steve. >> if i had a dollar for every time you and i talked about a third-party run, independent candidate. now bill kristol says there is someone. >> names include mitt romney, >> names include mitt romney, ben sasse and tom coburn, former senator from oklahoma. all three indicated the answer is no, consistently. it'd be a surprise if they got in. the big irproblem is this. the ballot deadline has passed in texas. it'll pass a few days from now in north carolina. a few days after that in indiana. you're getting into big states. if you're a third-party candidate, you won't be on the ballot if you got in now. >> if somebody does get in there, what does it do to trump's candidacy? >> if it's coming from the right, there is a threat to donald trump. that's why he reacted aggressively as he did yesterday. the other thing that happened over the weekend that he has to

worry about, i think, is the libertarian party, which has ballot access in all 50 states. they nominated their ticket over the weekend. you have two former republican governors. gary johnson, new mexico. bill weld, massachusetts. this is the most credible this is the most credible third party libertarian ticket we've seen. there is a bit of a threat there. >> speaking of something else trump may be worried about this judge deciding documents related to this lawsuit against trump university will be released, that tirade from trump, he's run as a business man of great success. could this be a bad week? >> that's the thing. always have to say every new revelation, new statement boy, never seems to stop them. however, this one, this trump university thing, i do think there's an aspect of this that is more understandable to people, more relatable to people. what he's accused of here, it really looks like at least what he's accused of could be seen as a con job against ordinary people. it's more understandable than some of the other things democrats have gone after, some of the other business vulnerabilities.

is quiet, a far cry from a terrifying scene that unfolded on sunday. bullets flying, this gas station catching fire. residents diving for cover. this upscale houston neighborhood is reelg this morning as investigators try to find out what led to a deadly shooting rampage. >> we don't know if he was out to target law enforcement f he was going to shoot people randomly. i would say atook on both is probably fair to say. >> the chaos broke out sunday morning. >> we have shooter situation. >> reporter: as a man with an ar-15 style assault rifle and handgun opened fire. >> we barricaded in a back bedroom, even in a closet for a while. all we could hear is helicopters and rapid gun fire. >> reporter: stray bullets likely setting off a blaze at this gas station. one man was killed. >> i seen a white guy hunched over with the car running and

what looked to be a gunshot wound to the neck. >> reporter: police met with heavy gun fire as they raced to the the scene. one deputy took several rounds in his bullet proof vest. another shot in the hand. >> one of mif classmate's mom got shot in the leg. >> reporter: four others wounded. >> this is not what we expect to see on a memorial day weekend in any community in the united states. but it's what we've had here. >> reporter: investigators are now interviewing one of the wounded as a possible second suspect though it's unclear what role if any he played in the shooting. as to the two deputies wounded they have been treated and releas released. so far no word on motive for the shooting. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you. >> rain isn't the only concern for beachgoer. two apparent shark attacks investigated, one in florida,

the other in southern california where a two-mile stretch of beach is closed. steve paterson is there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it is the unofficial start to summer so the beach behind me should be packed. yet it's going to be shut down for at least 24 hours after a possible shark attack and this one follows confirmation of a shark bite all the way across the country. fear on a florida beach. a boy just 13 years old bitten by a shark. his father kneeling by his side as life guards treat the wound on his right leg. a woman cradles the boy, you can hear him cry in pain. this is the devastation left behind, splotches of blood dotting the daytona beach. police say the shark was between 5 and 6 feet long, and not the only shark scare this memorial day weekend. >> happened so fast.

i don't know what happened. >> the kids had to get out of the water and sit on blankets. >> reporter: in california life guards rescued a woman, she had large bite marks on her torso and shoulderment she was taken to a hospital. two mile stretch of the state beach now evacuated and shut down for 24 hours as police search the waters for the shark behind the bite. >> obviously if there's aggressive behavior by a marine animal, then we take precaution. >> reporter: last year 59 shark attacks in the u.s., the highest on record. one of them fatal. and more than half of them happened in florida. a grim reminder for the millions of americans at the beach on this holiday. >> reporter: reminder, shark attacks are considered very rare. to give you context, you would much more likely to get struck by lightning but they still happen. >> steve, thank you. now a developing story, iraqi ground forces backed by

u.s.-led military aircraft launched an operation to retake the city of fallujah. it's the latest of attempts to dislodge i militants who controlled fallujah more than two years. officials say it's unclear how long it wilt take to liberate the city. >> here at home a computer glitch at jfk led to massive lines and long delays at check-ins. started about 4:00 sunday afternoon in terminal 7 operated by british air ways, a server wasn't working properly so the airlines had to check in travelers manually. at one point more than 1,000 passengers were waiting in line, but early this morning the glitch was fixed and the system is up and running again. >> and it was a dramatic and improbable finish at the indy-500. 24-year-old alexander rossi shocked the field on sunday becoming the first rookie in 15 years to win race. rossi didn't go to pit row, so

we're back at 7:30 now with a look at arlington national cemetery on this memorial day, may 30th, 2016. a day to honor servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country. inside studio , let's take a look at today's headlines. it is the weather. bonnie is hovering over the carolinas this morning. a day after making landfall as a tropical depression near charleston. the system stretched all the way to the northeast. in texas, heavy rain and major flooding there blamed in the deaths of at least six people. donald trump was in washington, d.c. on sunday, addressing a large crowd at the annual rolling thunder motorcycle rally. he's also labeling conservative commentator bill kristol an embarrassed loser, after kristol

tweeted an independent third-party candidate would join the presidential race. a boy is recovering after being bitten by a shark on a florida beach. another possible shark attack in southern california led officials to close a two-mile stretch of beach there. now to a story that's got a lot of people talking. the controversial decision by zookeepers in cincinnati to use lethal force against a gorilla to save a 3-year-old boy who slipped into the animal's exhibit. nbc's blake mccoy has the latest. good morning. >> good morning to you. this morning here in cincinnati, zookeepers are defending their decision to kill the animal. there are growing calls for the parents to face neglect charges. the boy was injured but is okay. we do want to warn you, some may find this video hard to watch. >> reporter: cell phone video capturing the horrifying moment a 3-year-old boy came face-to-face with a 400-pound

gorilla, after falling into the enclosure at the cincinnati zoo. >> mommy loves you. i'm right here. >> reporter: visitors watched the gorilla pick the boy up and drag him through the water. >> oh, my gosh. >> you heard the splash, and people were yelling, "this is a boy in the water, a boy in the water." >> reporter: witness kim o'connor said the boy had been talking about wanting to go in the water. his mother was watching several other children when the boy slipped through the railing and wires to enter the enclosure. ten agonizing minutes go by before zookeepers made the difficult decision to shoot the endangered western lowland gorilla with a long rifle. >> great, big animal. it seemed very much, by our professional team, our dangerous animal response team, to be a life-threatening situation. so the choice was made to put down or shoot harambe. he's gone. >> reporter: they say a tranquilizer would have taken too long. on social media, people blamed

the child's mother. one writing, while i'm sorry a child was hurt, i'm angry that parental negligence called the death of this animal. protesters calling for justice. >> we don't have a voice. they gunned him down, so we have to be the voice. >> the mother should be held accountable. >> reporter: the family issued a statement saying we are so thankful to the lord that our child is safe. he is home and doing just fine. we extend our heartfelt thanks for the quick action by the cincinnati zoo staff. we know that this was a very difficult decision for them, and they are grieving the loss of their gorilla. the incident comes a week after zookeepers in santiago, chile, shot and killed two lions after mauling a man who jumped into their den, took off his clothes and taunted the animals. in cincinnati, the gorilla exhibit is temporarily closed. a memorial grows for harambe,

who just celebrated his 17th birthday. >> gorillas can live up to be 50 years old until the wild and in captivity. this morning, there is a charge.org petition circulating online, to hold the parents responsible. so far, the petition has 85,000 signatures. police have not indicated any plans to charge those parents. carson and tamron? >> blake mccoy, thanks for that. a lot of questions about how the 3-year-old could possibly have gotten into the exhibit. >> over 30 years, it never happened. one of the things regarding how the gorilla was taken down. you visualize the animal falling over. in fact, an animal that size would have gone in rage and likely endangered the child. we'll see what happens in the investigation. let's turn to the presidential race and the history that will be made, no matter who wins in november. here's nbc's andrea mitchell. >> reporter: america will most likely be electing either the

first woman president, accompanied by a first gentleman who, himself, is a former president, or the first political outsider, a businessman and reality tv star with a former model and entrepreneur as his first lady. even as a historic number of voters are unhappy about either choice. >> in the history of polling, we have never seen two candidates this unpopular. >> reporter: 34% of registered voters have a positive opinion of hillary clinton according to our new nbc news/wall street journal poll, and donald trump's rating is worse. 29% viewing him favorably. >> fascinating thing about donald trump is we've never seen a candidate with this high a negative, and he is the only person since bill clinton who rides to the nomination with more negative than a positive. >> reporter: when he swept into office eight years ago, barack obama was wildly popular. now, voters face two historic and very different choices.

>> whoever is elected president is going to be a very big first. either if trump is elected, the first president without any government experience at all in history, or if hillary clinton is elected, obviously, the first woman. >> reporter: a clinton win would also be the third consecutive white house victory for democrats. that hasn't happened since fdr and harry truman. that doesn't mean it's a de facto third obama term. >> it's not going to happen, as far as history is concerned. many voted for george h.w. bush, expecting the reagan policies to continue. in many ways, that did not happen. >> we'll have little interruptions. >> reporter: meanwhile, a trump victory would be unprecedented. running as a washington outsider, trump's dominance in the primaries have been compared with the reagan revolution. >> there you see, the new first family of the united states. >> reporter: when reagan won the white house, he'd already served two terms as governor of california. a state with an economy larger

we have rain and storms moving through southeastern oklahoma and stretching down through austin. nothing see vevere right now, b the rain is reinforcing the flooding we've seen across most of texas. we are still seeing the rivers above flood stage. any additional rain will make matters worse. we have this cold front that'll move east. most of the storms today will be across the northern plains, up through the dakotas. on tuesday, it starts to shift farther into the southern plains. then we're going to see another round of storms through oklahoma and texas by the middle and end of the week. this is our zone to watch out for later this afternoon. they will not be widespread, but we could see isolated storms that produce large hail and damaging winds. those will be the biggest threats. we can't rule out a tornado. on tuesday, we're not looking at any widespread, severe storms, but we have a marginal risk of isolated, stronger storms from wisconsin, stretching to southwestern texas, and lightning will be the major concern with that one. something we'll
