if your kids are in college or just recently graduated you may have had a lot of discussions about their careers and finding a j-o-b. >> but the reality is that conversation needs to happen as early as middle school according to career expert susie welch who's here with lots of good advice. >> who's always right. >> tell my kids that. we'll get to that advice in a minutes but let's look at why it's so important to help your children figure out their strengths and prepare them for their future sooner rather than later. >> class of 2016, it is your turn now to shape our nation's destiny as well as your own. so get to work.

because of these reasons and more, it's never too early to start talking with your kids about how they will find and build viable careers. >> wow. the idea of starting early, when you're talking about early, how early? >> by middle school for sure be starting to talk about the real world of work with your kids. >> what difference can you make when it comes to middle school? >> start thinking about life skills. you talk about what do we know about the future? you're going to have to pivot without panic, as i say. and you have to learn how to change jobs quickly, learn new skills, learn new technologies so you need to move your kids into activities where there's unfamiliar things they're doing and up familiar people. if they love sports try them in art class but make sure they're exposed to quick changes and becoming comfortable with that. >> what if a kid already knows exactly what they want to do. >> you are so lucky. if that's the case in middle school, encourage them and build their self-confidence. even if they know what they want, say they want to be a

doctor or nurse, you still have to teach them to deal with unfamiliar situations and people because that's the real world. >> they always talk about young kids learning languages. is that a top priority? >> not because the world needs you to speak a different language than english because the language of the world is english but because of the discipline it teaches you. >> let's go to high school. what do you want kids to learn? >> skills like carpentry and electronics? >> those are great skills and vocational training is fantastic and start doing that if that's for your kid but the numbers are staggering in terms of employment levels, salary level, job satisfaction, almost two to three times higher when you have a college degree. so if you have the ability to send your kid to college or know scholarships, college should not be an optional do we go, don't we go? that will change the trajectory of your kids' life so talk about college as if it will happen,

start looking at slcholarship options and accept the fact that college will change their life. >> and they might have to be paying for it for the rest of their life. >> that's why you want them to get a good job. >> sometimes there are sciences, technologies, there are different things. >> this is stem. the world of stem. that stands for science, technology, engineering and math and for some of us like myself where this was not a natural thing you have to force yo urs to expose your kid to stem. suggest the activity and the class in coding. that's where the job growth is for future. >> you have area of destiny. >> this was by pastor terry smith that talks about thinking about your kids' future in terms of three superhighways, what you're good at, what you love to do and what the world needs. that intersection, start thinking about that in high school. start thinking about those three superhighways. >> and we have a few second left for college but what are the things people should know. >> it used to be you could find
