laura//cont. vo nbc bay area news begins with breaking news. a house with a suspected police shooter inside is on fire this morning. >> let's get right to that breaking news that's been unfolding since yesterday afternoon. the suspect is still barricaded inside the home. what's happening? >> it might be hard to see the home. the home is about 1 1/2 blocks away. that house front porch has been on fire the past 1:45 after the alameda county sheriff's office was running the tactical

barricade situation and launched tear gas in there. they believe the suspect is inside. this is the sergeant doing an impromptu news conference. we'll get more information. around 2:15 they put that tear gas. in the house caught fire. they were in touch with the suspect via phone until around 3:30. while the house was still burning. the phone line went dead. it's a small home. they have the home surrounded and trying to figure out how to flush him out. they believe he is alive inside. >> we are not talking about the man. we are trying to get him to come out and surrender. we haven't talked to him in about 45 minutes. >> you believe it's possible he is alive inside. >> it's possible if he is in a room and encapsulated himself and sealed off the room he could still be alive. i talked to the fire folks. they tell me that's very possible. >> you have armored cars around

the house? >> we are shielding the firefighters in case, in the event of gun fire. they have water that they are putting on the house to make sure the fire doesn't get out of control and he can come out at that point. >> the phone line went dead around 3:30 about an hour ago. is that right? >> we are going on 45 minutes with our last contact with him. at this point, daylight will be our friend. we are going to use robots and other technology to go in there. >> you were negotiating about 3 1/2 hours. did he give you any sense why he didn't come out? >> no. there was communication. we are not going to get into those details right now. strictly our job and focus is the tactical operation. we'll turn that over to the oakland police çdepartment. >> he's local?

standoff that's going on more than four hours now connected to a man police believe was involved in officer-involved shootings. this all started at about 1:30 yesterday afternoon during a traffic stop and has been going on for the better part of a day. police officers managed to trap that man inside a house on fremont on washington and robert. they were using tear gas to flush him out. they are not sure if he is or is not still alive. authorities telling us it's possible that man is still alive, maybe encapsulated inside a room. rob redell is out there live and will give us developments as he gets them. jumping ahead to what will be hopping at oracle.
