it's friday, june 3, coming up on "early today," the protesters were out in force as donald trump hit back hard against hillary clinton's no holds barred speech, often mocking the donald. two of the u.s. military's elite fighter jets, showpieces, a thunderbird and blue angel crash on the same day. dangerous flooding continues to inundate the south with record heat expected out west. how serious is muhammed ali's latest hospitalization. plus a distraught man attacks the man charged in his daughter's death. and we know what caused legend prince. breaking developments overnight in the ongoing flood emergency in texas.

12 soldiers from fort hood were swept away in surging floods when their two and a half-ton army truck overturned in high water at least five died, three were rescued. and hospitalized. four remain unaccounted for as the search continues by air and foot for the missing. the army division's commander said in a statement the first cavalry division is grieving. texas governor greg abbott released a statement saying texas stands ready to provide assistance to fort hood as they deal with this tragedy. the brave men and women stationed across fort hood and across our country put their lives on the line every day. rain storms across texas dropped six inches in three hours causing the floods. the soldiers unit had returned from a rotation in south korea earlier this year. a 9:00 a.m. eastern press conference has been scheduled for an update. violent protests overshadowed another trump event last night. this time in san jose.

hundreds of anti-trump protesters took to the streets as trump held a rally. trump supporters were yelled at, shoved and egged by protesters. in one case, even badly beaten. clinton campaign chair took to twitter saying attacking supporters over political disagreements has no place in the the election. san jose police say one officer was assaulted. while the violence happened outside, trump was railing against hillary clinton inside. >> the only reason she's behaving like this, and the only reason she's been dragged so far left, believe me, is she doesn't want to go to jail over the emails, okay? believe me. that's the only reason. >> his comments were in response to clinton's so-called foreign policy speech and andrea mitchell has the details. >> it was a 33-minute takedown of donald trump. >> donald trump's ideas aren't just different, they are

she was doing the party a disservice as governor. trump now tells the hometown paper, he would like to have her endorsement saying i respect her, i have always liked her. trump took to twitter saying he plans to open the now-defunct trump university. it's the center of a lawsuit. it came on the same day that house speaker paul ryan threw his support behind trump. saying he would be voting for him in the fall. >> it's very clear to me that hillary clinton is in no certain way going to be advancing our principles and policies, she's promising another obama term. and it's also become clear to me through my conversations that donald trump is somebody i know is comfortable with these principles and these general policies. >> the "washington post" responded to ryan's endorsement calling it a sad day for the gop and america. boxing legend muhammed ali has been hospitalized with a respiratory issue. a spokesman says 74-year-old, who suffers from parkingson's

disease is in fair condition. he is expected to stay in the hospital for only a brief time. however, the "associated press" cites two people familiar with his condition as saying it may be more serious than his previous hospital stays. they decline to be identified. ali has been hospitalized twice in the past years with severe urinariy tract infection. ali's friend, boxing great himself, sugar ray leonard tweeted prayers and blessings to my idol, my friend and without question, the greatest of all time. military officials are investigating jet crashes involving elite pilots in two different states. one, a thunderbird that had just flown over a graduation attended by president obama. the other, one of the navy's blue angels. nbc's miguel almaguer has details. >> the thunderbirds had just soared over the u.s. air force academy's graduation. president obama among the

dignitaries. watching as the cadets tossed their caps. but then, one of the six jets goes down. dropping out of the clear blue sky in colorado springs. >> numerous callers reporting the aircraft is down. pilot ejected. >> the highly trained pilot in the f-16 fighting falcon like this one safely ejecting. his plane appearing largely intact. spotted in an open field, no serious injuries. before heading back to air force one, the president stopped to meet with the pilot. thanking him for his service, and first responders for rushing to the scene. >> we've got a fireball at the rec park. >> another crash -- a fireball in tennessee. a blue angel's jet going down during a practice run. the navy plane, an fa-18 hornet, crashed near a golf course in smyrna. an elite squad like this one was prepping for an air show this weekend. the navy confirms no parachute

deployed. the pilot feared dead. two military planes going down in the same day. as authorities begin their investigation. miguel almaguer, nbc news. >> we have confirmation from the minnesota examiner's report that prince died from an overdose of the powerful painkiller fentanyl. it is unclear where the musician got the drug, nor how long he was taking it. a source tells nbc news at the time of his death, prince was being treated for opioid withdrawal, anemia and fatigue. fentanyl is a synthetic opioid, 100 times more powerful than morphine. it's generally used to treat severe pain such as advanced cancerer. the dea says it's more dangerous than heroin. some 700 deaths were tied to fentanyl, as little as a quarter milligram of the drug can be fatal. as we've mentioned, severe flooding continues to plague southeast texas after a new round of thunderstorms thursday.
